EPHEMERA COLLECTED BY WELSH RUGBY UNION PLAYER JACK MATTHEWS (1920-2012) ON THE 1950 BRITISH LIONS TOUR OF AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALANDcomprising six gramophone 78rpm records of the British Lions Team choir singing various songs including 'Cwm Rhondda' 'Scotland For Ever', 'When Irish Eyes are Smiling', recorded in Sydney by Australian Broadcasting Commission on 23rd August 1950, four with paper sleeve (two records are duplicates). Together with two scrap-books; one book titled 'JACK MATTHEWS' containing excellent black and white photographs from moments of his playing career including All Black Ron Elvidge being helped off the pitch after a crunching Matthews tackle in the third test of the 1950 Lions tour, other tour scenes on the pitch and off, a view of Matthews being presented with a trophy by Field Marshall Montgomery, South Wales Argus Wales team photo, British Lions 1950 team photo signed by the players, Barbarians Football Club Easter Tour official photo 1953, Royal Army Medical Corps team photo and photograph of Matthews and his team meeting King George VI before a match. Original antique Spanish Fruit Crate Label by Norberto Ferrer - Carcagente Espana - The blue label with yellow lettering features a stadium full of spectators watching a Football game with two football players – One dressed in a red shirt and white shorts kicking the ball and the other dressed in striped shirt and blue shorts trying to tackle him. Excellent condition. Country of issue: Spain, designer: Norberto Ferrer, size (cm): 25x27, year of printing: 1920s
A cast iron and mahogany rectangular 'Pub' Table, the painted white trestle ends each with a central cast panel depicting a Penny Farthing, Cricket Bats, Football etc., the reverse marked 'Rd no. 171730 Sports Pattern', these being united by a geometrically designed pierced stretcher, 41in (104cm) long, 17½in (44cm) wide, 29in (73.5cm) high.
C. H. 'Charlie' Beer (Devon, Exeter, Honiton Rugby Football Club) interest: a 9ct gold medal for Devon Rugby Junior Cup 1927-28 inscribed to 'Honiton' and 'C. H. Beer', together with two Exeter Rugby Football Club 1st XV team photographs, 1930-31 and 1931-32, both featuring C. H. Beer, and a Honiton Rugby Football Club team photograph, 1935-36, featuring C. H. Beer (Captain) (4) Honiton beat Brixham Reserves 21-7 to win the Devon Rugby Junior Cup 1927-28. On the history of Rugby Football in Devon, S. F. Carnell wrote "The club (Honiton) had a long association with Allhallows School, which provided it with many good players. Most notable were ......W. E. Sprake who with C. H. Beer played for Exeter and Devon."
