A fascinating diary and accompanying photograph album of a voyage on the SS Cherry Branch to Chile during Oct 11th - Nov 17th 1924. Written by Essex Blomfield. The typed diary being neatly laid out, tells of daily life aboard the vessel. Such excerpts include; a detailed list of the crew (and their nationalities!), '...it is now 10pm and the ship is still rolling. The other two passengers have been green all day and succumbed after our meal at 5.30...', a list of meals, '...engines broke down this morning and we had to stop for an hour..', various accounts of Blomfield 'mucking in' with the crew and doing daily duties, accounts of an near-fatal accident involving loading coals, and various other accounts. Makes for some fascinating reading. Along with an accompanying photograph album which shows SS Cherry Branch setting sail, and likely some of the locations mentioned within the diary. Also included is a typed ' SS Cherry Branch Rangers Vs Club De Sporto Athletico De Salaverry ' football match report, which lists Essex Blomfield as a player for Rangers. Wonderful personal account of a voyage from a bygone era. Note: from the large Fisher / Blomfield family archive consigned to this sale. Wing 1243A et seq. for later editions of Wedderburn (1685 and after) and STC 10478 for the first edition thus of Erasmus (1580). Wedderburn's Vocabula is noted for containing early descriptions of football and golf. Most secondary sources describe the first edition as appearing in 1636, with some giving a date of 1633; ESTC records one copy of a 1673 edition at Edinburgh Central Library, possibly an erroneously dated copy of the 1685 edition, which is otherwise the earliest we trace in libraries. The Dicta sapientum e Graecis 'includes "Sayings of the Seven Sages of Greece" with commentary by Erasmus (usually found as part of his "Disticha de moribus"); and the "Carmen de moribus" (otherwise known as the "Qui mihi") excerpted from the Grammar of William Lily' (ESTC record for the first edition, S118123).
