Rotherham and spent £80,000 transforming the hall into a luxurious country club, epitomising this louche age. Membership fees ranged from three to seven guineas; and the members themselves were equally far-ranging, from the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VIII) to the ill-fated Amy Johnson. The BBC even transmitted its weekly show 'Late Night Dance Music' with Henry, Carroll Gibbons and Charlie Kunz. As with most things the Second World War brought the end to this decadence: the country club hosted the Sheffield Royal Infirmary and the Royal Air Force.
