SOUTHERN SCOTTISH LEAGUE EMERGENCY CUP 1940/41,awarded to James 'Scot' Symon of Rangers F.C., in sterling silver, hallmarked for Birmingham 1940, the cover with footballer finial, the twin handled cup inscribed 'SCOTTISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION WAR CHALLENGE CUP', on a circular socle base mounted with shield shaped plaque inscribed 'SOUTHERN SCOTTISH LEAGUE EMERGENCY CUP COMPETITION 1940-41 WON BY RANGERS F.C J.S. SYMON', 24cm highNote: This rare and important piece of Scottish footballing history comes from a period of turbulence for the country. Due to the outbreak of World War II, all normal competitions were suspended, with a number of regional tournaments having been set up in their place. Therefore, whilst both the Scottish Football League and Scottish League Cup were no longer contested, the Southern Football League and Southern Football League Cup were held in an unofficial capacity. These were played at a time of unrelenting dominance for Rangers Football Club, them not having gone more than a year without lifting a major trophy since 1917. Indeed, during the so-called 'unofficial' years, the team won all six Southern League titles, as well as four of the six Southern League Cups (losing the other two in the final - one of which was cruelly snatched from them when the game ended in a draw, the winner being decided on who had been awarded the most corners). The trophy offered at McTear's relates to the very first of those Southern League Cup tournaments, dating from 1940-41. The teams were divided into four groups of four, with Rangers topping their group after five wins out of six. They then went on to face St. Mirren in the semi-final, who were defeated in a resounding fashion by four goals to one, allowing Rangers to progress to their first Southern League Cup final. This final was played against Heart of Midlothian at Hampden on the 10th May 1941, with 69,000 fans turning out for the event. This was a more fraught affair than Rangers’ previous games, and, whilst Hearts went one goal up in the first half, a second half equaliser from the light blues pushed the game to a replay. This replay again took place at Hampden just seven days later, this time in front of 90,000 supporters. Whilst Rangers went two up before the thirty minute mark, a goal before the half time whistle put Hearts within distance. The Edinburgh side found themselves back in the game at 70 minutes, when an equaliser put the teams two a-piece. Rangers dug deep for the remaining twenty minutes however, with two lightning quick goals on the 86th and 90th minutes ensuring they lifted the first ever Scottish Southern League Cup.This rather humble looking silver trophy was awarded to James 'Scot' Symon for his role in that team. Symon's is a name that will need no introduction to many of the Rangers loyal, he having succeeded legendary manager Bill Struth in 1954, steering the club to six league Championships, five Scottish Cups, and four League Cups. He also took Rangers into European football for the first time ever, guiding them to two Cup Winners Cup finals in 1961 and 1967.Perhaps lesser known is Symon's playing career, which at first glance may be deceiving having only made 32 official appearances for Rangers. This, however, does not take into consideration his distinguished service during those 'unofficial' war years. Due to Symon's erstwhile career as an architect, he was to remain in Britain, putting his considerable skills towards the war effort whilst working in a reserved occupation, a draughtsman in the Linthouse shipyard on Govan Road of Alexander Stephen & Sons. During the war, the yard produced aircraft carriers, cruisers, mine-layers, destroyers, sloops, minesweepers and tank transport ferries. This allowed him to continue playing for the club, during which time he was a mainstay of Struth's squad. Symon racked up over 250 unofficial performances for the club and plenty of silverware along the way. This is the first time any such trophy has come to auction and presents itself as a unique opportunity to own a rare and important piece of Scottish footballing history.

This would be the first of what would eventually become 9 titles in a row and, furthermore, victory allowed for qualification into next year's European Cup which the team would go on to famously win 'in the heat of Lisbon'.Condition report: Condition good to fair. GLASGOW NORTH EASTERN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION GOLD MEDAL 1888/89,awarded to Mick McKeown of Celtic F.C., the obverse monogrammed 'J.W' to a shield shaped cartouche below a purple coloured stone, the reverse inscribed 'Won by Celtic F.C M. McKeown 1888-89', marked 'DO(?)', 4.3cm including bale, 11.8gNote: A scarce and important piece, this is one of the very earliest medals awarded to one of the very earliest Celtic players.Mick McKeon began his career at Celtic after he was lured from Hibernian in 1888.The Ayrshire-born left-back played his competitive debut for Celtic in the 5-1 Scottish Cup victory over Shettleston on September 1st 1888. He was also to play for the side in their first ever final, the Glasgow Exhibition Cup final, which Celtic lost 2-0 to Cowlairs, then regarded as a shock result.Capped by Scotland, McKeown was a fine and much sought after talent but he was also an outspoken and fiery character who was only too happy to offer his considerable skills to the highest bidder.During his stay at Parkhead he made it be known that if Celtic weren’t prepared to recognise his worth then he would be on the move. It was rumoured that during one such discussion McKeown was so incensed by the club’s offer to him he struck club secretary John O’Hara. In many ways, possibly the first true modern player by attitude alone. He had several fallouts with other key players and officials and at one time declared to the press he was leaving Celtic to play for the breakaway Glasgow Hibernian, and was even offered captaincy of the new club. The majority of those at Celtic thankfully were against any such idea of following the Edinburgh club’s policy and it has been a proud statement of Celtic’s to support or employ any man regardless of their creed, despite the actions of those who wanted to thwart it.Celtic refused to release his kit and he was to remain with the Bhoys after his issues were resolved. In August 1891 McKeown did finally depart Celtic Park when he moved to England and Blackburn Rovers. He was soon back at Celtic, but playing in a friendly v Celtic for Blackburn Rovers, with Celtic winning 3-2.That move proved to be the beginning of the end for the player. A heavy drinker, his problems with alcohol worsened and his stay in Lancashire lasted less than a year. He returned to Scotland and had brief and unsuccessful spells at a number of minor clubs. He had became a rather poor sight, living day to day dependent on charity & handouts. He was also a regular at court for various frequent drink related misdemeanours. A spell in the army lasted less than a year when he was dismissed and described as being “worthless”.Michael McKeown died on October 25th 1903 aged just 33. His body was found lying in a lime kiln just a short stroll away from Celtic Park in Camlachie. He had died from asphyxiation.A pauper’s grave awaited the former Scotland star but Celtic did not forget their former player despite past run-ins. Celtic did the decent thing and arranged the funeral and burial to give him at least an honourable send-off.It was a sad end for the player, and a bleak warning to others. Football may have given the opportunity to the few to escape the drudgery of other lines they may have been driven into (such as working down the pits) but some mishandled the chance or couldn’t live up to it. It was to be a story that would repeat itself too often in the history of football even to today.

Director MR. R. TAIT', 40mm including bale, maker JWB, in nine carat gold, approximately 6g, mounted on presentation plaqueNote: This rare medal comes from a spell of Scottish League Cup dominance for the Edinburgh side. This medal comes from the second time they lifted the cup, defeating Partick Thistle resoundingly by 5 goals to 1 in the final.
