A group of 126 original b&w medium-format negatives relating to the 1966 World Cup by photo journalist Ian Wright of the Northern Echo, included in sixteen orig. negative packets with orig. ink captions including ten photos of Jack and Bobby Charlton returning to Ashington (six crowd scenes, one of Jack and Bobby at a window, one with their mum and two with the mayor drinking champagne and cutting a cake), two modern 10 x 8 inch prints and a contact sheet supplied (see illustration in catalogue), the other packets including Hungarian team training in Sunderland (9), civic reception for World Cup officials in Middlesbrough (2), Roke Park getting ready for the World Cup (4), measuring grass for Korean’s football pitch (5), North Koreans at Mayor’s Parlour (5), Ayresome Park development (4), Koreans training at Ayresome (2), Chile v North Korea at Middlesbrough (14), North Korea v Russia at Middlesbrough (19), Italy arriving at Newcastle Airport (2), Chile arrives at Newcastle (4), Russia arrives (5), Russians in training at Ayresome (13), and the North Korean World Cup Squad arrive (15), plus three modern contact sheets and a modern print from these negatives, plus a small quantity of Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Sunderland football team photo negatives from the 1960s. Ian Wright began working as a dark room boy at “The Northern Echo” at the age of 16, where Harold Evans was to become editor. Eventually he was given photography assignments, including covering emerging pop music groups for a new supplement to the paper called “The Teenage Special”. Throughout the 1960s Ian photographed such emerging icons as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendricks, Roy Oribson, et al. He followed Harold Evans to “The Sunday Times” in London and worked internationally thereafter. Last year he published “On the Brink of Fame, Pop Stars in the Swinging 60s” containing many of his historic and iconic photographs. He currently resides in Las Vegas with his wife and travels worldwide giving lectures about his career. He maintains a keen interest in cricket and President of the Las Vegas Cricket Club. Copyright for all the negatives included with this lot is transferred to the successful buyer. (approx. 170)
