Saxon Infantry Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a beautiful condition all leather skull pickelhaube with the skull manufactured from five segments of leather and that is why it is known amongst collectors as the football helmet. The skull is excellent, complete with its leather front and back peaks, all brass fittings overall, Saxon front plate, a highly unusual double thickness leather chinstrap with brass fittings. The helmet is fitted with both its national and state cockades in the non serrated style. Inner leather lining all complete and supple with all tongues intact with its leather drawstring. The interior of the bowl is lined in canvas. The inner lining is stamped size ‘57’. As shown on page 114 of Feldzug 14.
Saxon Regiment 101 Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a very unusual pickelhaube being constructed in the football style and issued to an enlisted man in Saxon Infantry Regiment 101. Profusely illustrated and described on pages 166 and 167 of Feldzug 15. The leather body has never had a Saxon plate fitted and no other holes have been pierced to the skull, it is at present without a spike on the chemically coloured circular spike base with matching back strap, we may never know whether a chemically grey removable spike was ever fitted or whether it was used without a spike. Both peaks, which are leather and cloth covered, have been machine stitched to the body, with its original chinstrap, the national cockade being of the serrated style, the Saxon cockade being of the non serrated Saxon style. To the interior very little of the leather liner remains, only two tongues and other parts of the liner body, the liner was originally produced in a field grey green leather, the inner body is canvas lined as the other football style helmet illustrated in this catalogue, marked ‘101.R’ to the rear inner peak, in this catalogue and on line. Reading of Michael Baldwin’s description in the afore-mentioned book is advised where he explains in great detail the theory of lack of front helmet plates.
