A Japanese two-fold byōbu screen, Meiji/Taisho period, painted with three karasu in flight in ink against a silver ground, signed Keigetsu sha with an artist's seal, overall 170 x 189.5cm Provenance: Purchased from Gregg Baker in January 2017. A familiar sight throughout Japan, large, shiny and black karasu (crows) also feature heavily in both Japanese culture and mythology. They first appear in Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan, 720) in the form of the huge three-legged crow, Yatagarasu, who was sent to guide the legendary first emperor, Jimmu, on his journey to take control of the Yamato region, the kingdom that would later become Japan. Since then, the crow has been seen as evidence of divine intervention in human affairs and the Yatagarashu has become a symbol of the Japanese imperial institution, used on banners at the enthronement ceremonies of Japanese emperors and even seen in the logo of Japan's national football team. Condition ReportPainting with surface scratches and losses, creasing in places. Signs of holes with old repairs and retouches in various locations. Frame with surface scratches, knocks and chips. Loss to the paper of the back to the lower left corner.
