AN HISTORIC ENGLAND RUGBY UNION INTERNATIONAL JERSEY WORN BY QUAKER FRANCIS HUGH FOX, CAPTAIN IN THEIR 1890 VICTORY OVER SCOTLAND Offered together with his cap for the match, original England team framed photo and five other caps, we believe that the jersey is the oldest England International Rugby Union jersey to be offered at auction. Francis Hugh Fox (1863-1952) played club rugby for Wellington RFC, the Marlborough Nomads and was one of the original members of the Barbarians Football Club. He lived in the Somerset country-house of Woolcombe, near Wellington (now a hotel) then later Tone Dale House which is still occupied by the Fox family - a family with Quaker heritage. He was educated at Marlborough College, a school which had a pedigree for producing England Rugby Internationals during the late nineteenth century as two 'Old Marlburians' appearing in the first England International match v Scotland in 1871. Fox's England experience was curtailed when sadly he declined the offer of a second International cap due to commitments with the family mill - a woollen and worsted clothing mill operating since 1772. As Quakers, the Fox family were pioneers of social progress introducing many benefits for the welfare of their employees including a nursery facility, a canteen, chapels, schools and sports pitches and halls. The Fox family ensured that employees were provided with leisure time for sporting matches and group outings. In 1873 a scheme was initiated to offer profit sharing, free medical attendance, compulsory insurance against sickness and company pensions. These social measures were put in place by Lloyd George forty years. The company employed about 5,000 people in the height of its output, in Wellington and at their subsidiary factories at Cullompton, Culmstock, Uffculme, Wiveliscombe, Weston super Mare and Chipping Norton.
