An Art Nouveau ‘Four-Glass’ mantel clock, the eight day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a gong, with a visible escapement to the dial front and with the pendulum bob set with paste brilliants, the two-piece white enamel dial having stylised black Arabic numerals, blued steel hands and stamped with the maker’s name ‘New Haven Clock Co, New Haven, Elgin, USA’, the brass four-glass case having gilt spelter adornements in the Art Nouveau taste, height: 41cm. * The New Haven Clock Company was one of the most famous makers in the New England region of America having been formed in 1853 and at one point employing over 460 workers. Financial difficulties saw the company taken over in 1902 by Walter C. Camp, better known as the ‘Father of American Football’. It took over the English sales firm Jerome & Co. Ltd. before becoming bankrupt and ceasing operations in 1960.
