Military History - Local History - WW1, a George V silver rounded rectangular cigarette box, hinged cover inscribed Captain J.W. Newham, South Notts Hussars, From Lt. Colonel Bertram Abel-Smith, M.C., 1916 - 17, enclosing two cedar-lined divisions, green morocco base, baton thumbpiece, 4.5cm high, 13cm wide, rubbed maker's marks, London 1916Lieutenant Colonel Bertram Abel Smith was commissioned into the South Nottinghamshire Hussars. He proceeded with the Regiment and saw service in Gallipoli and Egypt. In 1915 he volunteered for special duties and was appointed Military Liason Officer at Suvla Bay, this appointment would earn him the Military Cross. He was promoted to Lt Colonel and given command of the 23rd(2nd Football) Battalion Middlesex Regiment and whilst leading his Battalion from the front he won the DSO. "As Battalion Commander at Haouthem on September 29th 1918 he showed great gallantry and power of command. Again near Gheluwe on October 1st 1918 he led his Battalion to the attack with great gallantry, through very heavy machine-gun and shell fire, though suffering from the effect of gas. His leadership and personal example maintained a fine fighting spirt in his Battalion." The Battalion had been rushed from Italy to the Western Front in March 1918 as part of the 41st Division. After the War Lt.Col Smith commanded the 8th Battalion Sherwood Forester and was ADC to the King 1926. He commanded the 139th Sherwood Forester Brigade 46th Division TA 1924 TO 1928 and was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 8th Sherwood Foresters in 1937.

ESCAPE TO VICTORY: An excellent black and white leather football individually signed by eleven footballers, all of whom appeared in the film Escape to Victory (1981) comprising Pele (Corporal Luis Fernandez; a good example, 'good luck, Edson Pele'), John Wark (Arthur Hayes), Osvaldo Ardiles (Carlos Rey), Paul Van Himst (Michel Fileu), Mike Summerbee (Sid 'Buzzer' Harmor), Halvar Thoresen (Gunnar Hilsson), Russell Osman (Doug Clure), Co Prins (Pieter van Beck), Robin Turner (German player), Kevin Beattie (stand in for Michael Caine), Paul Cooper (stand in for Sylvester Stallone). All have signed in bold black inks. Rare in this form. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Provenance: The signatures were all obtained in person by a crew member who worked within the Sound Department during the film's production.
