One of only 25 LG45s bodied as a Tourer and consequently much coveted and very rarely on the market.Having established its reputation by winning the Moscow - St Petersburg Reliability Trial of 1910 with a 30hp six, Lagonda concentrated mainly on the production of light cars before reverting to sporting and luxury models in the mid-1920s with the introduction of the 14/60. This four-cylinder, 2-litre model was joined in 1929 by the first of Lagonda's own sixes - the 3-Litre - but by the mid-1930s the Meadows-engined cars were seen as the way forward. Introduced at the 1933 Olympia Show and based on the preceding ZM 3-litre model, the M45 deployed Meadows' 4½-litre, twin-plug six to good effect, saloons being capable of reaching 90mph and tourers the 'ton' under favourable conditions.A team of three specially prepared short-chassis cars (effectively the soon-to-be-announced M45 Rapide) prepared by Lagonda main agents Fox & Nicholls performed creditably at the 1934 RAC Tourist Trophy at Ards, and the following year one of these TT cars driven by John Hindmarsh and Luis Fontes won the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance classic outright.Under W O Bentley's technical direction the big Lagonda became more refined: the M45's successor - the LG45 - gaining synchromesh gears, flexible engine mounts and centralised chassis lubrication among many other improvements. Endowed with such an impeccable pedigree, the 4½-litre Lagonda quickly established itself as a favourite among the wealthy sporting motorists of its day.  A mere 278 LG45s were produced between 1936 and 1937 and the model remains a much sought-after classic, however, of those 278 only 25 are believed to have been delivered as Tourers such as this offering and consequently these rare derivatives have always been coveted and rarely come to market, making this a wonderful opportunity. We understand that the first owner of this stunning LG45 was, Lord Burghley, the Olympic Athlete who became the 6th Marquess of Exeter in 1956. He inspired the scene in the film “Chariots of Fire “ when Harold Abrahams ran round the Great Court at Trinity College in the time it takes for the college clock to toll midnight!  Burghley actually accomplished this feat in his final year at Cambridge and was the first to do it taking 43.6 seconds to cover the 406 yards. Our vendor purchased the Lagonda a couple of years ago from Hyman Ltd., the well-respected US dealer in all things classic, and at that time it was finished in Old English White with dark red wire wheels, a tan leather interior and displaying an odometer reading of 98,161 miles. Surprisingly, in the photographs accompanying Hyman’s sales literature, the car is seen wearing its UK registration number, CLW 296, so presumably it had been part of a private collection and not used on US roads.Despite the fact that the car’s bodywork and trim appeared in good condition all round, our vendor decided that he wanted to totally repaint and retrim the Tourer and the result is truly spectacular. It’s now resplendent in Gloss Black with a depth of shine that is quite remarkable, the wire wheels are also in black (shod with new Dunlops all round) and the weather equipment is all new. The interior has been superbly retrimmed in a glorious Apple Green and displays a level of craftsmanship rarely seen with not a detail missed. The engine bay can only be described as immaculate and every other mechanical area that’s visible has been thoughtfully presented, not over-restored but just the way you would hope to find it. We could write further chapters about this impressive motor car but suggest that the best way to assess this beautiful and charismatic Lagonda is simply to come along and view it. With only 25 ever built and far fewer remaining, it may be your only chance to see one. With a Le Mans pedigree, dependable Meadows 4½-litre engine and smoothly operating transmission, the LG45 offers a great package of heritage, modern convenience and reliability and in this case, with its interesting provenance and amazing presentation, 12013 deserves your serious consideration.  SpecificationMake: LAGONDAModel: LG45Year: 1936Chassis Number: 12013Registration Number: CLW 296Engine Number: 12013Make: Interior Colour: Green LeatherClick here for more details and images

Black Adder, the ex-Brian Ditchman/Steve Dear supercharged special is a highly competitive pre-war car that enjoyed much success in MGCC and VSCC events in the 1990s and 2000s. Built to emulate the works 'Cream Cracker' cars, this is a seriously potent machine. This fantastic MG Special was built from the remains of two PA Midgets (0864 and 1665) between 1979 and 1982 by Roger Thomas on behalf of owner Bryan Ditchman. It was prepared with the MCC Trials in mind and featured cycle-type wings and a special heavy-duty differential reinforced by long through bolts. The car duly obliged with a Silver Medal in an Exeter Trial in the early 1980s, failing only one stage which was a good effort on standard carbs. It was subsequently purchased from Bryan Ditchman by the owner prior to our vendor, Steve Dear, in June 1992 and was developed by him as an all round competition car for sprints, driving tests, hill-climbs and trials. Steve was ‘Mr MG’ at the time and very knowledgeable about pre-war Midgets. For some reason that we haven’t established yet, the little MG became known as ‘Black Adder’ and the name seems to have stuck. In 1993, he fitted the car with a Marshall A 75 supercharger resulting in a string of problems, however, they were all eventually sorted out. The full story of the following years, the new parts that were fitted, the upgrades and modifications is contained in an information sheet in the car’s history file which can be inspected at our Documents Desk or could be emailed to interested parties.Over the years 'Black Adder' enjoyed numerous successes in a variety of events including the Exeter Trial, Exmoor Fringe, VSCC Driving Tests, Prescott, Brooklands and Malvern, all documented. As is often the way, another project came along and 'Black Adder' was retired to the shed and was last used in 2005. It was then purchased in 2021 by our vendor, a previous Touring Car Champion and vintage enthusiast, who set about recommissioning the car. This included removal of the sump to check the crankshaft - all was well - the radiator was re-cored, a new water pump fitted as the old one was blocked with solid antifreeze and, with a new battery fitted, 'Black Adder' sparked into life. The car was then tuned on the rolling road and the result is spectacular! The Phoenix crank and high compression pistons propel the lightweight MG at an alarming rate and the car could well be very effective in VSCC/MG Club competitions on road or track. It would also be great fun on rallies and it’s surprising just how much room there is for fuller-bodied pilots! Don’t believe us? Come along to the sale, jump in and try it.SpecificationMake: MGModel: PA/B SUPERCHARGEDYear: 1934Chassis Number: PA0864Registration Number: 304 GDATransmission: ManualEngine Number: 1927Drive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: Blue leatherClick here for more details and images

Offered from 35 years, long-term ownership, this fantastic, matching numbers, 8-litre WO was delivered new to the Duke of Leinster and has been extensively rallied by its late owner. The magnificent 8-litre Bentley (YF5005) on offer here began life as a Folding concealed head Coupé by Berkeley Street coach builders, Thrupp & Maberley. It graced their stand in the Coachwork section at the 1930 Olympia Motor Show and Autocar Magazine described it as: “A sports coupé on the new 8-litre Bentley chassis is really an open two-seater and coupé in one, as the head of the coupé when down is completely concealed beneath the rear decking. A large tail provided ample luggage accommodation and other features are the raked screen, the helmet-type wings and the general low build. The colour scheme is of black and a delicate shade of pastel blue”. Within the history file are a number of images and lots of details about YF5005’s early years and for these we are indebted to Bentley historian Clare Hay. The Duke of Leinster was obviously smitten with the pretty Bentley as a sale was agreed at the Show and the car was purchased from Jack Barclay Limited for the sum of £2,200. There is a copy of this original Bill of Sale in the file dated 8th July 1931 with the car registered as GP 1999 and the purchaser listed as ‘The Duke of Leinster, Dukes Hotel, St James’ Street, W1’. His signature says simply ‘Leinster’, how very aristocratic. YF5005 obviously has blue blood in its veins as a number of the following owners are titled or have a very exclusive London address. The history file makes fascinating reading and there are a further three Bills of Sale from Jack Barclay and a list of owners with recorded maintenance information. The car was purchased by J.C. Broadhead in 1962 and it was he who commissioned the change of bodywork to its current open four-seater in the 1970s. The next chapter in the Bentley’s life was a long one, being sold by the late Peter Harper to James Whitaker in 1987 and remaining with him until his recent passing. Retaining its original chassis frame, engine, gearbox, axles and steering box - the tourer coachwork has now been on the car longer than the original. He loved YF5005 and used it extensively over thirty years and it never wanted for anything. He maintained the car himself, and during that ownership covered many thousand miles on International rallies. The engine was rebuilt a couple of times, the axles and gearbox too. No receipts or record of the works are on file, but drive it and its obvious to see this has been a coveted Bentley. Effortlessly pulling through all gears, steering light and precise, brakes very effective, and the engine is near silent – with a wonderful howl from the exhaust. A charismatic car from a charismatic owner, however, the time has come for YF5005 to be enjoyed by a new keeper. We welcome and encourage your inspection of this venerable Bentley and, those members of our team who have been lucky enough to drive YF5005, can confirm just how special she is.SpecificationMake: BENTLEYModel: 8-LITRE TOURERYear: 1931Chassis Number: YF5005Registration Number: GP1999Transmission: ManualEngine Number: YF5005Drive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: Red LeatherClick here for more details and images

Recognised as the earliest surviving saloon made on the post-war Jaguar production line and carries the Chassis Number 510010 denoting that it was the 10th produced. The Mk IV was Jaguar’s first car following World War II and was produced between late 1945 and 1948. Built on a 120” separate chassis featuring beam front and live rear axle suspension on semi-elliptic springs and Girling mechanical brakes, it was offered with three engine variants; four-cylinder 1½-litre, or six-cylinder 2½/3½-litres coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox. The stylish, all-steel coachwork was available in four-door saloon or drophead coupé configurations with the kind of luxurious interior typically associated with Jaguar. In addition, it sported distinguishing chrome headlamps and a prominent chrome radiator grill. Very few of these magnificent Jaguars were built for the home market as steel was being rationed for goods for export. This charming Jaguar Mk IV is recognised as the earliest surviving saloon made on the post-war Jaguar production line and carries the chassis number 510010 denoting that it was the 10th produced. Sir William Lyons famously stored SS engine blocks in the garage at Wappenbury Hall knowing that post-war production would be slow and the first seventeen cars carried the 'SS' casting on the engine blocks before the Jaguar logo was introduced into production. This is a matching-numbers car and widely regarding as the benchmark for all Mk IVs due to its distinctively original features unique to the first cars to roll off the line before full production and tooling got into full swing. The 2.5-litre engine was fully rebuilt in 2018 by the renowned marque specialists Davenport Cars who have also ensured this significant saloon has remained on the button and a pleasure to drive. Few cars have the usability of this Mk IV and running on Blockley tyres would look the part at any event or in any collection. It comes with a complete tool tray and has benefitted from substantial investment over the last five years to keep it at this level.Post-war motoring at its best and a significant part of Jaguar history.SpecificationMake: JAGUARModel: MK IV 2.5LTR SALOONYear: 1946Chassis Number: 510010Registration Number: HLL 731Engine Number: L1913EDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: BrownClick here for more details and images

Arthur Henry Enock (1839 - 1917, Welsh, "The Artist of the Dart") An elevated prospect looking over white water tumbling between heather-covered and wooded moors, the purple hew of the heather blossom echoed in the distant misty horizon beneath the golden orb of the warming dawn sun, signed, oil on artists' board, in gilt slip and ornate frame, 65 cm x 91 cm framed. ["Mr Enock's water-colour paintings of Devon scenery and effects - and indeed those of other parts of the country, for he was a wide traveller in Great Britain - were well known and admired. His intense love of Dartmoor, its rivers, gorges and tors, has been perpetuated in many fine works. The misty atmospheric effects, sunrises and sunsets, in which he was a master, have perhaps never been surpassed, and those who possess examples of his best work in this field - and they are many - are fortunate. One such, a drawing entitled "That Beautiful Dartmouth," hangs on the walls in Buckingham Palace, having been purchased by King Edward when Prince of Wales. Mr. Enock was an admirer of Turner and David Cox. but his "school" was an original and individualistic one, whose mains attribute was in an intensive appreciation and depicting of the poetry of Nature in its form and colour; and incident appealed less to him. It may well be that the value of his work will appreciate still more now that the hand which produced it has gone." Charles Reginald Enock, Western Morning News, 1917]

He approached Swiss watchmakers, challenging them to make a world-beating ultra-thin movement before they lost the entire market to the Japanese and offered 2 million Swiss Francs if they could produce an ultra thin quartz movement for use in his Concord watch brand. On January 12th 1979, four Swiss watch companies - Concord, Eterna, IWC, and Longines - announced the world's thinnest watch, just 1.98 mm thick with the movement built directly into the rectangular watch case. The watch was branded ‘Delirium’. Concord used the name for their models, which were focused on the American market, with the other three companies branding under different names.Further versions were produced, all with quartz movements, including the Delirium IV, which, at just 0.98mm thick, remains the thinnest watch ever made.In 2005, Concord introduced a mechanical Delirium model – this example – which, although much thicker than the original, still retained the same distinctive style and rectangular case of the original quartz versions.Case: Good condition. However, flying so near the North Pole required designing new instruments to overcome the unusually strong magnetism present there. SAS developed a new flight navigation system to overcome these extreme magnetic fields and, as Universal Genève was SAS’s official supplier of watches, they were approached to develop a suitable pilot’s watch for the flights. Universal Genève appointed Gerald Genta (who would go on to design some of the industry’s most iconic watches, including Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak and Nautilus) to design a watch to commemorate SAS’s polar flights. The watch was originally called Polarouter and was officially released in 1954 with a price tag similar to that of a Rolex Explorer. A year later, the line was renamed Polerouter, and production in many forms continued until 1969.Today, the Universal Genève Polerouter remains one of the most desired and still affordable of Genta’s designs and is much sought after by collectors.

probable mark of Anne Craig & John Neville, London 1744, plain, tapering sides engraved with the arms of DAVIES impaling ALO AP RHIWALLON, part marked piano hinged, stepped and domed cover topped with an urn shaped finial, capped brown handle 22cm high, 19.6oztProvenance:Wood Hall, Hilgay, NorfolkThe armorial appears to commemorate the marriage of an unidentified second son of the Davies family of North Wales and the northern and central Welsh marches and his wife, an unidentified daughter of another Welsh family who, from the evidence of her paternal arms, claimed descent from Alo ap Rhiwallon, of Trefnant, Denbighshire. An extensive search of printed pedigrees of the Davies family has not yet found a credible marriage at present, and therefore the full identity of the parties that are represented by these marital arms is not known.Overall in good condition with no obvious sign of damage or repair. Some minor surface scratches, dents and dings as to be expected. Hinge a little loose. Hallmarks and engraving a bit rubbed. Handle firm in the sockets but not a perfect fit - possibly therefore a replacement.

London 1744, each with quatrefoil scalloped edged base, knopped column, spool capital and part marked friction fitting removable wax pan, engraved with the family crest of BRUDENELL, EARL OF CARDIGAN, 11.5 x 11.5cm, 20cm high, 33.2ozt gross (2)George Wickes was one of the most important English silversmiths of the 18th century. He held a Royal warrant for the supply of silver to Frederick, Prince of Wales and the company that he founded eventually became Garrard & Co. - the former Crown jewellers - who are still in business in London today.Given the date of the hallmark, these sticks were undoubtedly in the possession of George Brudenell (later Montagu), the 4th Earl of Cardigan (1712-1790). George was the eldest son of George Brudenell, the 3rd Earl of Cardigan and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bruce. He succeeded his father as the 4th Earl on the 5th July 1732.George married Lady Mary Montagu (1711-1775), the second daughter and co-heiress of John Montagu, the 2nd Duke of Montagu and his wife, Lady Mary Churchill at the Parish Church of St Giles-in-the-Fields, Middlesex on the 7th July 1730. In consequence of his marriage to Lady Mary Montagu, George inherited the estates of his father-in-law in 1749, and assumed the arms and surname of Montagu for himself. He was later created Baron Montagu of Boughton, NorthamptonshireGeorge was appointed as a Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter on the 13th March 1752. He was also sworn as a Member of His Majesty’s Privy Council in 1766 and served as the Master of the House from 1780 – 90 and Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire for the year 1789 – 90.The Brudenell crest of the seahorse being ensigned with an earl’s coronet must have been engraved between1744 and his assuming the arms and name of Montagu in 1749.Overall in good condition with no obvious sign of damage or repair. Some minor surface scratches, dents and dings as to be expected. Both stand firm on a flat surface with no wobble.Hallmarks are located to the inner of the bottom edge of the base, applied, as usual, before final finishing, and on one stick the bottom half of the maker's mark is missing, probably as a result of enthusiastic final polishing. It is still identifiable from the letter tops and the crown. (See images)Wax pans numbered to match corresponding numbers engraved to the underside of the sticks. Locating tubes a bit scuffed and the edges a little unevenCrests on both the sticks and the pans a little worn but still clear.

Harold KNIGHT (1874-1961)Portrait of the artist Robert Morson Hughes (1873-1953)Circa 1915/16 Oil on canvas 102 x 127.5 cmExhibited: ‘Artists by Themselves’ 2019 Penlee House GalleryProvenance: From the Estate of Robert Morson Hughes, thence by descent. A professional conservator's condition report is available upon request. This heroic portrait, so reminiscent of Harold Knight’s self-portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, ostensibly appears to be a study for his large, important work 'The Council,' (exhibited RA 1916) which features Robert Hughes on the right of the painting, also with pint in hand, walking stick and overcoat on left arm.In 'The Council' Hughes leans forward, intently facing his good friend the artist Samuel John Lamorna Birch. Birch is expounding an opinion, no doubt upon a war-related subject, whilst three other Lamorna locals around the table look on, including Old Jory, the landlord of the Lamorna Wink where the painting is set. Knight was an accomplished portraitist and completed numerous commissions, but his sensitive portraits of women differ greatly to many of his male studies, which although technically brilliant, could be dour and lacking in emotional warmth. Rapport, respect or a connection with his subject really mattered. In this portrait Hughes (Bertie to his friends) looks directly at us out of the painting, with a truly penetrating, almost intimidating gaze. He is life sized, and the full force of his personality is almost simmering upon the canvas. It says: “This is a man of character.” And who are we to argue? It is a painting that demands respect. It is one of Harold Knight's most powerful portraits, and is very much a finished work in its own right. Prior to the war, life for the Knights in Lamorna had been idyllic, aside from the tragedy of Florence Munnings’s suicide in July 1914, these had been halcyon days in the ‘Happy Valley’ of Cecily Sidgewick’s novels, and Harold had done some of his best work here. They moved to Lamorna in 1913 when Laura’s career was still developing and although Harold had established himself as a portrait painter, money was still tight for them. They needed to sell paintings to live, unlike their friends and neighbours, the independently wealthy Hughes’.Robert Morsen Hughes and his wife Eleanor were popular and significant members of the artists group living in pre-war Lamorna. Like the Procters, the Simpsons and several others, they had come to Newlyn to study under Stanhope Forbes, had fallen in love, not just with each other but also Cornwall. They married, stayed, and made their lives there.Along with the Napers, Sidgewicks, Leaders and the Heaths, the Hughes bought a parcel of land from Colonel Paynter of Boskenna and in 1911, designed and built their own home, 'Chyangweal' above the Lamorna Valley. Eleanor was an accomplished pianist and their home became popular for social gatherings and musical evenings. Along with S J Lamorna Birch and his family, this was a social group of great harmony and friendship. Although undated, this work was probably painted in 1915 and in the context of that time frame, it is a fascinating portrait. As illustrated by ‘The Council’, war dominated every conversation. Many Lamorna friends and colleagues joined up, and by 1915 there had been tragic deaths and woundings amongst them. This portrait and ‘The Council’ document a point in Harold’s life just before a great emotional shift, because in 1916 Harold declared himself a conscientious objector. It was the start of a period of immense mental and physical strain. Friendships fractured, even long standing friendships with the Sidgewicks and the Birchs were put to the test. Although too old to serve, in 1916 S J Lamorna Birch and Robert Hughes became members of a local volunteer force, guarding Newlyn harbour, and so struggled with Harold’s pacifist stance. When Knight got his call up papers in 1916, he was asked to explain himself before a tribunal. Unimpressed, they sent him to work as a farm labourer on the Cornish coast. He was alienated by friends and colleagues, writing: '’I have lost the friendship of several people whose friendship I valued, and my career as a portrait painter has been prejudiced by my attitude towards the war I have been compelled to take.’' It must have been an immensely painful episode for him. Knight was a quiet, sensitive man, often overshadowed by his brilliant, vivacious artist wife, Laura, but this stance showed immense courage. It took its toll on him both mentally and physically. 'Hoeing', Laura remarked, 'for days on end without seeing a living soul. He was again a sick man.' By 1917, Knight's health had deteriorated to such an extent that he was excused from further labour and returned to painting. After the war they left Cornwall for London, whilst this portrait, arguably one of Harold Knight’s finest, remained in the Lamorna home for which it was painted. We don’t know whether this work was a gift or a purchase, but other than a three month loan to Penlee House in 2019, this marvellous portrait has hung at Chyangweal for over 100 years and never been exhibited elsewhere.
