White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum), British East Africa, shot by J Gardiner Muir 1893, taxidermy horn, lower horn 56cm, upper horn 33.5cm, on an oak shield with brass plaque with inscription (as above), vestiges of taxidermy label on reverse See illustration J Gardiner Muir had a less than glorious reputation in th world of hunting. John M MacKenzie in his pioneering work The Empire of Nature (pg.56) mentions an immense slaughter of game by a road making party under Captain Bernard Slater. He described his team as "all first-rate shots, and they were all mounted; their combined bag of game, if a record had been kept, would have been little less than staggering; their slaughter of rhinoceroses alone in the open thorn-bush country between Sultan Hamud and Machakos Road was only equalled by that of a man named Gardiner Muir and his Scots ghillie, who between them killed over 80 around about Machakos in 1893 in less than 3 months". Gardiner Muir, incidentally, so incensed the company by advertising his feats against the rhino that it lead to the introduction of the first game regulations. This is almost certainly one of the trophies taken by him in that place at that time.

A Dutch 6-pdr bronze naval cannon, dated 1694, Claude Fremy, Amsterdam, 1694. Recovered from the wreck of the Dutch East-Indiaman Hollandia,The barrel with five moulded turns, the breech with monogram VOC cast in relief and surmounted by an A for the Amsterdam chapter of the Dutch East India Company above a struck proof mark in the form of the Amsterdam Town mark and an inscribed band CLAUDY FREMY ME FECIT AMSTELODAMIA o 1694, engraved number 1640, with a pair of scrolled dolphin handles and swamped muzzle, 8ft 1in long, 3.67in bore, on a later stepped wooden carriage built by the late James Close. Provenance: Sotheby & Co., 18th April 1972, sale of Artifacts etc. recovered from the wreck of the Dutch East-Indiaman "HOLLANDIA" (sunk 1743), lot 503, purchased by James Close for £2000. The James Close Collection of Historic Naval Cannon. Historical Notes: The cast inscription indicates that the current lot was cast by Claude Fremy (1646-1699) who was appointed as the Master Gunfounder of Karthhuizerstraat in Amsterdam in 1681. He is known to have cast several guns for the Amsterdam chapter of the VOC and probably others for the Amsterdam Admiralty. A bell, also cast by him and dated 1697, hangs in the bell tower at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town, South Africa`s oldest surviving building. The Hollandia was constructed by the Dutch East-India Company in Amsterdam in 1742. Built to a new experimental design, she was 150 (Amsterdam) feet in length, displaced 700 tons and carried 32 guns. On 3rd July 1743, she sailed from the Friesland Island of Texel bound for Batavia (in modern day Jakarta) with a complement of 276 men, commanded by Captain Jan Gelder, and laden with a cargo of 129,700 guilders in silver coin. In addition to the crew, the Hollandia sailed with several important passengers, including a brother of Gustaaf Willem Baron van Imhoff, the Dutch Governor-General of the East Indies, with the former`s wife and sister-in-law who belonged to the aristocratic Bentinck family of Bevervoerde. Ten days into the voyage the Hollandia had strayed off-course and become separated from the two other vessels accompanying her to Batavia. In the early hours of 13th July 1743 she struck the Gunner rock, off Annet, Isles of Scilly. Making for St. Mary`s and taking on water fast, she managed to fire her guns as a signal of distress but to no avail. She went down around 15 minutes after striking the rock in approximately 100 feet of water with the loss of all hands. Contemporary accounts suggest that all attempts to locate and salvage the Hollandia`s cargo were abortive; John Troutbeck in his 1794 publication Survey of the Ancient and Present State of the Scilly Islands noted:- (The wreck) still remains a booty for those who can find it. In 1968 Rex Cowan, a former lawyer, charged himself with the challenge of locating the wreck. After two years of searching by his team of experienced divers, assisted by knowledge gained through exhaustive research in the English and Dutch archives and a specially-developed electronic instrument called a proton magnetometer, the wreck was finally located on 16th September 1971. The shipwreck site was spread over an area of approximately 180 by 100 metres and comprised three main clusters. The southern cluster consisted of the remains of the lower part of the hull and included two bronze short mortar-type cannon which probably spilled out of the damaged hull whilst the Hollandia was adrift and taking on water. The two northern clusters were probably the remains of the main body of the ship, with the stern facing south. The heavier artifacts, which included 5 anchors and 28 iron guns, settled in gullies on the seabed whilst many of the smaller items were randomly dispersed across the area making archeological interpretation of the site extremely difficult. At the time of the loss of the Hollandia the current lot would have been almost 50 years old. This, coupled with the fact that 28 iron guns were located amongst the wreckage, suggests that it probably was not amongst the principal armament of the ship but may (along with the two mortar cannon) have been part of the vessel`s cargo or perhaps installed as supplementary armament. The current lot must have been one of the earliest artifacts recovered from the wreck (during the short window of suitable weather after its discovery in September 1971) as it was immediately offered for sale at Sotheby`s on 18th April 1972 where it was purchased by James Close. A bronze 16-pdr Land Service mortar by Ciprianus Crans, Amsterdam, and a bronze 2-pdr breech-loading cannon both of which which were also recovered from the wreck of the Hollandia, were sold at Bonhams Fine Arms & Armour from the Henk L. Visser Collection, London, 28th November 2007 for £26,400 and £9,840 respectively. Visit www.dnfa.com for condition reports.

Thomas (D.) Dismantling London Bridge, 1968 oil on canvas, 535 x 1040mm. (22 x 42 ins), signed and dated, lower right, framed, 1968. ***In 1962, London Bridge was falling down. Built in 1831, the bridge couldn`t handle the ever-increasing flow of traffic across the Thames, and, like Venice, was slowly sinking. The City of London decided to put the 130-year-old bridge up for auction, and build a new one in its place. Robert McCulloch, founder of Lake Havasu City in Arizona and the chairman of the McCulloch Oil Corporation, submitted the winning bid of $2.46m. McCulloch spent another $7m dismantling the bridge, cataloguing the pieces and moving them to their new home via Long Beach in California - a process that saw them travel more than 10,000 miles in three years. The reconstruction began on 23 September 1968, with a ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor of London, who laid the cornerstone. Legend has it that as the (re)construction neared completion, McCulloch became furious as there seemed to be some towers and other bits missing. It is said that the oil baron thought he was buying the instantly recognisable Tower Bridge, rather than the less spectacular London Bridge..

Three years later Bute sold the unfinished shell to William Petty, Earl of Shelburne and 1st Marquis Lansdowne. Adam continued to work on the house (his plans and services were included in the purchase price) which was largely complete by 1768. Bonomi`s unexecuted design for fitting up the gallery as a library was the fifth to be commissioned by Lansdowne who had already rejected proposals for the gallery from Adam himself (c.1764, drawing in Sir John Soane`s Museum), Pannini (1772), Clerisseau (1774) and Belanger (1779). George Dance`s designs of 1788-91 were eventually realised as a sculpture gallery in 1816-19 by Robert Smirke..

BERNARD `POP` GREENOn 23rd/24th March 1944, 76 Airmen escaped from POW camp Stalag Luft 3 at Sagan in Poland. Their escape through the tunnel `Harry` and the story of the days that followed became known as `The Great Escape` and has now become part of British folklore.Bernard Green was born in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire on 23rd December 1887.He was educated at Clifton College, London University and Cambridge University. At the outbreak of war in 1914 Bernard joined the Royal East Kent Rifles as a private. He was subsequently commissioned into the Buckinghamshire Battalion of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire light Infantry as a Second Lieutenant in June 1914.In 1917 he was mentioned in despatches, and in 1918 was awarded the Military Cross. He became a specialist machine-gunner, and when he resigned his commission in 1920 he was granted the rank of Major, although modestly it was a title that he very rarely used. Between the war years he worked for the family paper making firm, and in 1926 became a Special Constable, eventually achieving a long service medal. In 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War Bernard Green applied for a commission as an officer air gunner with the RAF Volunteer Reserve. In December 1939 he took up active service as Pilot Officer 76904, at the RAF Number 3 Bomb Gunnery School. It`s not clear why, in July 1940, at the age of 53 Bernard took up a place as rear gunner on a Hampden bomber. The plane was flying out of R A F Waddington with 44th Squadron on a mine laying mission. It may have been due to shortage of men or his strong sense of duty and loyalty to his squadron. In the early hours of 20th July the Hampden was hit by flak off the coast of Denmark and ditched into the sea in Tannis Bay, 300-400 metres off shore at Kandestederne. Two of the crew perished, but P/O Green and P/S Farrands survived and swam ashore. Later that morning Bernard Green came into contact with a party of local peat cutters and refused the opportunity of concealment from the enemy, as he knew what the consequences would be for his rescuers if found. A unit of German soldiers had been alerted and soon arrived to collect him.Bernard Green was sent to Dulag Luft in Oberursel where he was interrogated and then sent on to Stalag Luft 1 at Barth. Subsequently he was moved to Stalag Luft 3 at Sagan, in Poland. It seems that Bernard Green took a very active part in the daily operations of escape work at Stalag Luft 3. He was a popular character and would have been a father figure to the majority of the much younger men, hence his nickname `Pop`. He was certainly known to have acted as a `penguin` in distributing the waste soil over the compound as tunnel `Harry` took shape. The events of the Great Escape have been well documented and are known to many through John Sturges` classic film. One fact that many are not aware of is that there was thick snow on the ground in that part of Poland in March 1944. Green and others did make their escape after overcoming the shortfall of the tunnel and gathered with a group of about twelve others all dressed as Czech workmen. They walked for some distance through the woods in thick snow and eventually made their way to a railway station south of Sagan. It was from there that they travelled about fifty miles and alighted from the train just short of Hirschberg.Continuing on foot and approaching a village that was impassable because of heavy snow in the fields, Bernard Green was captured by a German soldier as walked straight through the village.Flight Lieutenant Green as he was now known following promotion, was eventually taken back to Stalag Luft 3 and spent 14 days in the "cooler". Sadly, as is well known, many of the escapees were not so lucky. Bernard Green spent the rest of the war at Sagan. At 57 years old he was surely the oldest of the men who attempted such a brave escape. In 1947 Flight Lt Green was mentioned in despatches as published in The London Gazette on 7th January. In June 1963 Bernard and his wife attended the World charity film premiere of `The Great Escape` at the Odeon Theatre, Leicester Square. He died following ill health on 2nd November 1971. The account of the personal military history to be available on view with the items, and facsimile copies of the documents only to handled on view, unless by special arrangement

Biography Suzanne Lucas (1915 – 2008) M.B.E Medaille de la France FLS PRMS FPSBA SWA HSF Born in India and surrounded by the vibrant colours of saris, butterflies, birds and flowers, her first love was an exquisite tropical bird. Childhood memories included a vast cloud of golden butterflies, sunset over the Himalayas and the revelation of the stars. She returned home to Devon and was sent to Roedean School and Edinburgh University. Her mother, who believed in travel as an excellent education, then took her through Europe including language courses at Grenoble and Munich Universities. They met Hitler and were deluded by the magnificent presentation of Nazi dogma. In Berlin the illusion was dispelled by the murder of an anti-Nazi friend. Back in Italy she sailed from Venice to join her father, posted to Egypt by the Royal Air Force. The romantic social life of the Suez Canal Headquarters town, Ismailia, ended at the outbreak of war just before she married the Director of Navigation. Under the threat of imminent German invasion she was on half-hour notice to evacuate the family. Her husband had founded the Free French Movement in Egypt leading to a dangerous flight to join General de Gaulle in London. He took part in the invasion and, after promotion to Admiral, became Governor of Brest. There she saw the devastation of a city flattened by bombs, then in contrast a liberated Paris where art lived again in extraordinary beauty and enthusiasm. On retirement she bought an enchanted cottage where she tamed the animals and birds and began a serious art career. She was elected by the Royal Miniature Society in 1954 and, after being a constant Council Member, served as Honorary Secretary and Vice President until becoming President in 1980. Exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Paris Salon, Royal Institute. the Linnean Society of London and, the President`s Exhibition at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, her one-man shows were at the Sladmore Gallery, Liberty`s, Atlanta U.S.A. and three at the Mall Galleries where she was a Director of the Federation of British Artists and four times a Hunting Group Prize finalist. She was awarded thirteen Gold Medals during her eighteen years painting toadstools, promoting their beauty and interest. Her work covers detailed pictures of plants and flowers, and in 1985 she founded the Society of Botanical Artists, of which she became President. Her personal collection of miniatures are available for exhibition at the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, the society of which she was a member for 50 years, and president from 1980 until her retirement in 2004, at the age of 89. Her gold medal collection of toadstool paintings, the subject of two sumptuous illustrated volumes, entitled, In Praise Of Toadstools, published by Suzanne Lucas herself in 1992 and 1997, together with her personal collection of botanical paintings, are bequeathed in their entirety to The Lindley Library.LOT 1. A LATE 19th CENTURY HELMET & EPAULETS FROM THE CHOLMONDELEY ESTATE VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE, of white metal alloy construction, the skull with applied plate of crossed fire axes and flaming torch, applied comb with fire breathing dragons pressed in relief, folded edge to peak and nape, leather and ringed chin -strap (some deterioration), the shoulder epaulets of nickel plated overlapping scales mounted on leather. Provenance : Cholmondeley Castle had, for many years, its own fire brigade made up of volunteers who worked on the estate. We are informed by the vendor that the helmet and epaulets were issued to his grandfather who worked on the estate as Forest Manager as well as serving in the brigade. Two generations of his family served as volunteer firemen until the brigade was disbanded. The horse-drawn tender is still held by the Cholmondeley family.
