Bakewell (Robert). To the Nobility, Gentry, and Others. The humble Petition of Robert Bakewell, of Dishley, in the County of Leicester [drop-title], December 23, 1780, two leaves with four folds, fore-edges and some folds neatly strengthened, first leaf with printed petition on recto and printed subscribers list on verso, second leaf with ms. list of subscribers on recto, and ms. signature of R. Bakewell on verso, sewn into modern cream wrappers, 4to. Robert Bakewell`s own copy of an extremely rare piece of ephemera: only one copy traced, that held by Leicestershire County Library. The signature on the final leaf is in Bakewell`s hand as are about half the entries listed as additional subscribers in manuscript; this was evidently Bakewell`s copy, which travelled with him, folded to fit into his pocket. Robert Bakewell (1725-1795), one of the most important figures in the British Agricultural Revolution, introduced selective stockbreeding methods which transformed the quality of Britain`s cattle, horses and sheep, without any knowledge of modern genetics. Selective breeding, which Charles Darwin described as artificial selection, was an inspiration for his theory of natural selection. In `On the Origin of Species` Darwin cited Bakewell`s work as demonstrating variation under domestication, in which methodical breeding during Bakewell`s lifetime led to considerable modification of the forms and qualities of his cattle and sheep. Prominent agriculturist, George Culley, whose name appears in the manuscript subscribers list, was a pupil on Bakewell`s farm in 1763, and he subsequently became a respected agricultural improver and author. Bakewell`s most generous patron was the Duke of Rutland, whose subscription of £200 is equivalent to approximately £12,500 today. Such generosity must have been invaluable to Bakewell who states in his petition that he has sustained "great and unavoidable Losses, to the Amount of many Thousand Pounds", adding that "if the Public should take his Case into their Consideration... he is fully persuaded he could be highly instrumental to the general Good of this Nation, by continuing in his late Line of the Breeding Business, and carrying it forward in such a Manner as will be most conducive to the public Service". Nightingale (Florence, 1820-1910). The Holy Bible... , OUP, 1885, neat presentation inscription to half-title in Florence Nightingale`s holograph, `Offered to Alice Heptworth, with Florence Nightingale`s deepest interest, & `good speed` for her work among the infants now, & for her continued & everlasting progress in all good work, London, March 1886`, a little soiling, hinges cracked, a.e.g., orig. limp black morocco gilt, rubbed on spine and at extremities with a little wear to spine ends, 8vo. She also gives directions concerning two parcels of books to be delivered by Miss Hepworth. In the second letter Florence Nightingale discusses instruction of students in geography and religion and relates a case study of a young boy bought into St. Thomas hospital who after a year of care had the `real thing in his heart, the true religion`. In the second letter she begins `Please accept the (Revised) Bible which has been waiting for you so long` and presumably refers to the Bible here sold. In the third letter Miss Nightingale responds to Miss Hepworth`s decision to leave Lea and offers her best wishes. (1)

A 19th Century Indian gold and chalcedony signet ring of military interest. The rectangular ring with foliate engraved underbezel and shank with bifurcated scroll shoulders. With a letter from the British museum dated May 1968. This ring is inscribed in Persian to Major-General Dugald `Bahadur` Campbell. (The term `Bahadur` - Military Commander, being a title of honour issued to individuals in India who have performed a deed of great service to the Nation.) The dating of the ring to 1803 is significant, coinciding with a critical year in Anglo-Indian military history. The campaign of that year against the Marathas culminating in Wellesley`s famous victory at the Battle of Assaye. Records of the Indian Office from this time noted `The success of Major General Campbell in quelling the Disturbances in the ceded districts of Kurnool, Cuddapah, Bellary, and Anantpur, subsequent distribution of his forces into temporary Cantonments.` For this he is known to have been officially commended, and this presentation ring very probably relates to that event. Thomas Arrowsmith (circa 1772-after 1829) PORTRAIT OF THE CELEBRATED JOCKEY FRANK BUCKLE signed and dated 1816, oil on canvas, in the original Regency plaster frame with running laurel leaves, ribbons and bands at the corners, and twisted rope design to the outer edge, 74 by 56cm., 29 by 22in. Frank Buckle (1766-1832) is the first example of a jockey who became a popular national hero. The son of a Newmarket saddler, Buckle enjoyed a very long career as a jockey which began with an apprenticeship to Richard Vernon at Newmarket. When he had his first ride in 1783, Buckle weighed out at an incredible 3st. 10lb. He had little problems with weight throughout his career and could comfortably to the scales at 7st. 10lb. without wasting. The outstanding jockey of his generation, Buckle`s record of 27 Classic winners stood from 1827 until 1984, when it was finally eclipsed by Lester Piggott`s victory on Commanche Run in the St Leger. Even more remarkable about Buckle`s achievement is that he had been riding for over 20 years before the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas were inaugurated. For the record, Buckle won the 1,000 Guineas six times, the 2,000 Guineas five times, the Derby five times, the Oaks nine times (still remains an all time record), and the St Leger twice. His final Classic winners for the Duke of Grafton aboard Arab and Turcoman in the two Guineas of 1827 were at the ripe old age of 61. Away from the Classics, Buckle also famously rode Hambletonian in the Great Match of 1799 against Diamond at Newmarket for stakes of 3,000 Guineas, a race immortalised in a huge painting by Stubbs that now hangs in the Tate Gallery. Because of his diminutive size and renowned strength in a finish, Buckle was known as `the pocket Hercules`. Roger Mortimer in his History of the Derby Stakes, 1962, p.24, wrote of Buckle "Unlike most of his fellow riders, he was invariably neat in his dress and always wore beautifully made boots and breeches; unlike many of the too, he was scrupulously honest. For much of his life he lived at Peterborough, where he farmed successfully, being famous for his butter, and he also bred greyhounds, bulldogs and fighting cocks ... He must have been a tough little man ... as he thought nothing of hacking over to Newmarket to ride work and then riding home to Peterborough in time for tea, a distance of some 90 miles. After 48 years in the saddle, Frank Buckle had his last ride in 1831 and died shortly afterwards. This portrait was painted in 1816 when Buckle turned 50 with the sitter looking as dapper as Mortimer was later to describe him in his book. The earliest known image of Buckle is in Robert Dighton`s caricature print of 1806 titled `A HERO of the TURF and his AGENT`. The only other formal portrait of the jockey dates from later in his career and is by Richard Jones (fl. 1767-1840). This work was acquired by the National Horseracing Museum in 1996 having descended through Buckle`s family. Thomas Arrowsmith was a portrait and miniature painter who entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1789, and exhibited 26 portraits at the R.A. between 1792 and 1829. He is said to have been deaf and dumb. A pair of portraits of a Liverpool merchant and his wife hanging the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
