WILLIAM KENNEDY (SCOTTISH 1859 - 1918),GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, 1901oil on panel, signed27.5cm x 36cmFramed and under glass.Note: William Kennedy was born in Paisley, where he attended the Paisley School of Art. In the early 1880s he moved to Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian and studied with artists such as Jules Bastien-Lepage, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Raphaël Collin, Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois, and Tony Robert-Fleury. Among the Glasgow Boys studying in Paris in the early 1880s, Kennedy's style was a synthesis of Whistler's and French and Scottish painting. In this oil, his choice of subject matter followed the example of Lavery, who had painted a number of highly successful views of the 1888 Glasgow International Exhibition. Like Lavery, Kennedy was aware of Whistler's city views, such as his Cremone Gardens Nocturnes, with their carefully and elegantly placed figures set in an empty foreground. Kennedy became a prominent member of the Glasgow Boys and in 1887 he was elected President of a society formed by the group's members.

OLIVE CARLETON SMYTH (SCOTTISH 1880 - 1933),CATHLIN CLUTHA AGUS OSCARpen, ink and heightened with gold on vellum, signed20.5cm x 25cmMounted, framed and under glass.Notes: This drawing shows Cathlin Clutha with Oscar. Cath'lin of Clu'tha, daughter of Cathmol. Duth-Carmor of Cluba had slain Cathmol in battle, and carried off Cathlin by force, but she contrived to make her escape and craved aid of Fingal. Ossian and Oscar were selected to espouse her cause, and when they reached Rathcol (where Duth-Carmor lived), Ossian re- signed the command of the battle to his son Oscar. Oscar and Duth-Carmor met in combat, and the latter fell. The victor carried the mail and helmet of Duth-Carmor to Cathlin, and Cathlin said, " Take the mail and place it high in Selma's hall, that you may remember the helpless in a distant land."OSSIAN is the narrator and purported author of a cycle of epic poems published by the Scottish poet James Macpherson from 1760. Macpherson claimed to have collected word-of-mouth material in Gaelic, said to be from ancient sources, and that the work was his translation of that material. Ossian is based on Oisín, son of Finn or Fionn mac Cumhaill, anglicised to Finn McCool, a legendary bard who is a character in Irish mythology. Contemporary critics were divided in their view of the work's authenticity, but the consensus since is that Macpherson framed the poems himself, based on old folk tales he had collected. The work was internationally popular, translated into all the literary languages of Europe and was influential both in the development of the Romantic movement and the Gaelic revival.Olive Carleton Smyth trained at Glasgow School of Art between 1900 and 1909 as a fresco decorator and artist. She was an early tutor at the School and was recruited by Francis (Fra) Newbery in 1902 while still a student. She was appointed Head Of Design at the GSA in 1933. Her work rarely appears at auction but 'PYTHEUS BUYS AMBER' a tempera and gold paint on vellum (34 by 40cm., 13¼ by 15½in) sold at Sotheby's, London 13.10.2012 lot 136 for £43,250 (premium).Smythe's work has a theatrical quality, reflecting her interest in theatre, and her influences included the Ballets Russes, with its dramatic themes, colours and costumes.
Articles 3 and 4 in the charter's text state: “Founding members are those who formed the company in 1899. They will pay an annuity of L. 25 for the first year, then L. 15. Are active members those who join the Company after January 31, 1900 [...] and will pay an annuity of L. 15”. The consecutio temporum allows us therefore to establish that the volume was printed in 1900. This is also confirmed by the business history of Giovanni Pizzi, the Milanese typographer who printed the charter. Patrizia Caccia in her repertoire “Publishers in Milan” noted that the activities of Pizzi had its headquarters in Via Visconti 14 until 1905/06.provenance:-one of the Club's founders-by descent to his heirs

British Isles. Desgranges (Christian name is unknown), La Carte des Royaumes d'Angleterre d'Ecosse et d'Irlande, dediée a sa Majesté Britannique, published Paris, 1689, separatley published engraved map by Capitaine Roussel, contemporary outline colouring, inset maps of the English Channel and of the Shetland, Orkney and Faroe Islands, large uncoloured ornate cartouche and mileage scale, lower margin trimmed to plate mark, 455 x 570 mm R.W.Shirley. Printed Maps of the British Isles 1650 - 1750, Desgranges 1. state 1. Desgranges was a little known French map maker and no record exists of his Christian name, nor the dates of his birth or death. This map was separately published and Shirley notes at least six different states. This example matches Shirley's description of state 1 in that it has the signature of Roussel who engraved the map but it lacks that of Dolivart. This would appear to be an unrecorded variation of state 1. The date is significant. 1689 was the year that Louis XIV declared war on England in support of the deposed Catholic King James II. The three figures on the right of the cartouche represent James, his wife Mary and their infant son. The text beneath the inset map of the Faroe, Orkney and Shetland islands lists the English possessions in the Americas, the West Indies, Africa and Asia. (1)
