HENRI MARTIN (FRENCH 1860-1943)Boy with Sailboat, circa 1932-1935 oil on panel 45 x 37 cm (17 3/4 x 14 5/8 in.) signed lower right PROVENANCEPurchased from Chaite Gallery, Paris, 1950Private collection, New YorkWe are grateful to the Musee de Cahors Henri-Martin for assistance in cataloging this lot.LOT NOTESThe present lot was created in the early 1930s, when Henri Martin began to lean towards pointillism in his painting style. The painting depicts a boy who is preparing to launch his sailboat on the water of pond on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The subject, as well, as the manner of painting, point out at the decoration of the staircase of the building of the City Hall of the 5th arrondissement of Paris. In 1932 the administration of the City Hall commissioned Henri Martin to create a group of panels to complete the walls of the rotunda staircase on the first floor of the building. As the subject matter for this decoration, the artist chose the Luxembourg Garden and its pond. It is very likely that the present lot was a study for one of the characters (see attached reference image). The composition comprises of five panels, three of which depict the pond with children racing their toy sailboats, and the other two show shaded walkways on the sides. The work was completed in 1935 and still remains today at its original location. CONDITIONObserved in frame, the work is in very good original condition with no apparent issues to report. Inspection under UV shows no apparent areas of restoration.N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. 2000 BMW Z3 CoupeRegistration no. V453 MAUChassis no. WBACK51040LC98828Mileage: TBAMoT: 22/10/2020 *Much lauded Coupe version of the Z3*Stealth colour combination*Seldom offered Putting a fixed, extended roof on the Z3 gave BMW a car entirely different in character from its convertible sibling, and so much so it seemed to develop a cult following almost overnight by those who recognised the unusual yet practical design for what it was. Today the Z3 Coupe following grows with the rise of the modern classics movement and for the would-be owner this Japanese-market, left-hand drive example riding on beefy alloy wheels has the stance and the presence to appeal to any buyer with an eye out for later, less mainstream models. This example has good bodywork and black paint and a generally good interior, the black leather seats (with red stitching) showing some use but without neglect. The vendor says the engine is good for starting and running and that the running gear is in generally good order. It comes with some history. With striking looks and sparkling performance, this left-hand drive Z3 Coupe comes with some history and is generally well presented.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 60/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 2018 Traditionally Built Wooden-Hulled Speedboat *Unique: built at a cost of £80,000+*Nearly-new – running in hours only*Ford turbo diesel engine for power and economyThe thought of owning a Riva Aquarama might appeal to many classic car owners, but values are such they are out of reach to many. The more affordable and practical solution is this bespoke one-off that was completed in 2019 at a cost of more than £80,000 + vat. Commissioned by a wealthy enthusiast who wanted the style of an Aquarama but not the cost, the result uses modern materials with traditional teak decks, with power coming from a modern 145hp Ford turbo diesel driving through a Castoldi water jet for greater manoeuvrability. Measuring 20ft long and with a 7ft beam, this just-run-in classic speedboat offers all the enjoyment without the high cost. Offered with a custom trailer this really is the complete package!Footnotes:Please note the build was completed in 2018 and also includes a full cover, Victron battery charger and invertor for on board 240v sockets.Vendor Score Total: 100/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. The Jaguar was then restored and converted to right-hand drive, and shortly thereafter was sold to a Mr Frederick Jones of Sunderland (in September 1991).In July 1997 the E-Type was purchased by Mr Justin Noxon, who commissioned a major restoration by Newlands Motors, classic car specialists of Forest Row, Sussex at a cost of over £17,000. At this time the engine was rebuilt, an unleaded conversion was carried out and 'hot' camshafts fitted. The car was also subject to a gearbox rebuild; the radiator was re-cored and Kenlowe fan was fitted. The car was rewired; suspension and braking system refurbished with up-rated brakes (XJ6 front callipers and Coopercraft rear); and a roll bar and race harnesses installed.Next owner Jonathan Kidd acquired the E-Type in May 2001. Major works and modifications undertaken during Mr Kidd's ownership are as follows: clutch and fuel pump replaced; flywheel balanced and new pedals; new D-Type style wheels; negative earth conversion; new starter motor; suspension completely refurbished with adjustable shock absorbers; new 80-amp alternator; body re-sprayed; speedometer repaired and re-calibrated; heater replaced; new Kenlowe fan and voltage stabiliser; braking system completely refurbished; clutch slave cylinder replaced; new exhaust system; rear sub-frame renewed and refurbished; rev counter repaired and re-calibrated; roll bar modified to be detachable; and inertia-reel seat belts fitted.Mr Kidd having passed away, the car was acquired by Mr Andrew Biggs of Dorset in December 2009. This 1964 example was owned by Paul Mann, a friend of Dr Stephen Ward who was involved in the establishment-rocking Profumo scandal. Paul gave the car to his daughter on her 21st birthday. The passing years took their toll on the Alfa and 10 years ago it was restored. Today it presents well, with good-quality paint and panel fit and a well-fitting hood and a good interior. In the UK, Italian scooters were adopted as favoured transport by the 'Mods', becoming one of the enduring style icons of the 1960s. Predecessor of the Li and TV series, the LD arrived in 125cc form in 1951 and became available with 150cc engine three years later. The LD 150's air-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine produced 6bhp (1.2bhp more than the 125) giving the model a top speed of around 50mph. LD production continued until the end of the 1950s. Believed to be original and unrestored, this LD150 displays 'Lambretta Conessionaire Ltd, Wimbledon' plaques throughout and is fitted with air-intake side panels. The machine turns over but does not fire into life. Accordingly, the machine is sold strictly as viewed requiring recommissioning or restoration to a greater or lesser extent. Bonhams is pleased to offer this 25hp that carries sporting tourer bodywork and has been in long-term (21 years) ownership. Believed to have been restored many years ago its general external appearance is said to be between average and good, with the interior in very much the same order throughout. 1934 Talbot AV95/105 Alpine ReplicaRegistration no. BGH 664Chassis no. 38036Odometer Reading: 52,000MoT Expiry: Exempt After avid Brooklands entrant and St Albans garagiste W. M. (Mike) Couper had taken part in the 1933 Alpine Trial in his Talbot AW90 he suggested that the factory enter a team of three cars for the 1934 event '... to prove that the AV105 with its 3-litre Roesch-designed engine was still better than anything else in the world... which the public might tend to forget after two years' absence from competition.'No rival manufacturer - including Bentley - could yet approach the Talbot's power output per litre. The Talbot engine was also more robust than those offered by Bentley and Lagonda while the recently-adopted pre-selector gearbox was a significant advantage on Alpine roads. Three new works AV105 'Alpine Racer' Team Talbots were built in the spring of 1934; BGH 21 was allocated to Tom and Elsie ('Bill') Wisdom, BGH 22 to Hugh Eaton and BGH 23 to Mike Couper. All three of Couper's team Talbot 105s finished the gruelling 1934 Alpine Trial in excellent shape and the Talbot and Adler teams were finally judged equal winners of Group II, both teams winning coveted Alpine Cups. Talbot's record of seven official entries in three separate Alpine Trials with not a single mark lost by any car, and the highest possible award won in each event, was unprecedented. After a total of 3,600 miles, Wisdom said '...fuel consumption had averaged 18 mpg and oil 1,700 mpg'. Minimal maintenance was needed en route and '... no car in the world could have given less trouble or performed better ...'. Several successful Brooklands seasons followed - the most significant era in Talbot history.BGH 664 was built in Talbot's Barlby Road factory in March 1934 as AV95 chassis no. 38036 with a 10' wheelbase and delivered un-bodied to Messrs Tozer Kemsley and Millbourn on 23rd April 1934. It is thought that the chassis was exported in this form to Australia and bodied there. After WW2 the car found its way to South Africa and into the well-known Talbot collection of Bryan Smith, who at the time also owned the original 1934 Alpine Team car, BGH 21, purchased by the Wisdoms after the Alpine Trial event. After Smith's death his vehicle collection, including a number of Talbots in various states of repair, was returned to the UK.Around this time, BGH 664's chassis, otherwise identical to that of an AV105, was shortened by 6' to the correct 9'6' wheelbase and re-bodied as an 'Alpine Racer', using dimensions taken from an original car. At some juncture engine no. BA697 from 1935 was fitted, along with an overhauled pre-selector gearbox.More recently, BGH 664 has been comprehensively mechanically restored for the current owner by marque specialist I.S. Polson (bills on file) with half an eye on the Flying Scotsman and other great events. Work included the fitment of a freshly overhauled and well-known engine no. 95AV95 (as installed in BGH 22 for most of the '70's through to the '90's). The car is now running well and is suitable for use and enjoyment as is, or could be further developed within VSCC regulations.Inspected for conformity by the DVLA in July 2015, the car is correctly described on its V5 registration document; it is also believed eligible for a VSCC Buff Form. 1927 Bentley 3-Litre Speed Model Sports Roadster Registration no. JO 377Chassis no. TN1559*Originally a Weymann saloon by Gurney Nutting*Substantially known ownership history*Present ownership since 1998*Recent extensive professional refurbishmentWith characteristic humility 'W O' was constantly amazed by the enthusiasm of later generations for the products of Bentley Motors Limited, and it is testimony to the soundness of his engineering design skills that so many of his products have survived. From the humblest of beginnings in a mews garage off Baker Street, London in 1919 the Bentley rapidly achieved fame as an exciting fast touring car, well able to compete with the best of European and American sports cars in the tough world of motor sport in the 1920s. Bentley's domination at Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930 is legendary, and one can only admire the Herculean efforts of such giants as Woolf Barnato, Jack Dunfee, Tim Birkin and Sammy Davis, consistently wrestling the British Racing Green sports cars to victory. W O Bentley proudly unveiled the new 3-litre car bearing his name on Stand 126 at the 1919 Olympia Motor Exhibition, the prototype engine having fired up for the first time just a few weeks earlier. Bentley's four-cylinder 'fixed head' engine incorporated a single overhead camshaft, four-valves per cylinder and a bore/stroke of 80x149mm. Twin ML magnetos provided the ignition and power was transmitted via a four-speed gearbox with right-hand change. The pressed-steel chassis started off with a wheelbase of 9' 9½' then adopted dimensions of 10' 10' ('Standard Long') in 1923, the shorter frame being reserved for the TT Replica and subsequent Speed Model. Rear wheel brakes only were employed up to 1924 when four-wheel Perrot-type brakes were introduced. In only mildly developed form, this was the model that was to become a legend in motor racing history and which, with its leather-strapped bonnet, classical radiator design and British Racing Green livery, has become the archetypal Vintage sports car. Early success in the 1922 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, when Bentleys finished second, fourth, and fifth to take the Team Prize, led to the introduction of the TT Replica (later known as the Speed Model) on the existing 9' 9½' wheelbase, short standard chassis. Identified by the Red Label on its radiator, the Speed Model differed by having twin SU 'sloper' carburettors, a higher compression ratio, different camshaft and the close-ratio A-type gearbox, the latter being standard equipment prior to 1927 when the C-type 'box was adopted. These engine changes increased maximum power from the standard 70 to 80bhp and raised top speed to an impressive 90mph. Other enhancements included the larger (11-gallon) fuel tank and (usually) André Hartford shock absorbers. Bentley made approximately 1,600 3-Litre models, the majority of which was bodied by Vanden Plas with either open tourer or saloon coachwork.According to leading marque authority Dr Clare Hay's definitive work, Bentley: The Vintage Years, chassis number 'TN1559' was completed in January 1927 and left the factory fitted with engine number '1566'. Originally bodied by Gurney Nutting as a Weymann-type saloon and first registered 'YE 1140', the Bentley was first owned by Captain W G Horne. The rest of its history prior to WW2 is uncertain, but at the war's end the car was purchased from Roy's in Kenilworth by a Mr Lloyd, who owned a metalworking business in nearby Leamington Spa. It was claimed that the owner previous to Mr Lloyd had been one of the late Sir Henry Segrave's mechanics and that he intended to race the car. He had removed the original saloon body, which was not included in the sale. Very nicely done, the current lightweight two-seater body dates from the immediately post-war period and was built by the car's then owner. In the ensuing years the Bentley passed into the ownership of Tony Judd, who raced it, destroying the original engine when it threw a rod. The engine was replaced with the current unit (number '343') which dates from 1923. Tony sold the Bentley through Stanley Mann Racing to Mr David Jenkins. David Jenkins lived near Cardiff and enjoyed owning the car for around four years. He also owned a Tiger Moth, which he flew from Rhys airfield, and lost his life as the result of a flying accident. During his ownership David Jenkins twice drove the Bentley to Le Mans with his wife to witness the 24-hour race. The current vendor bought the car, via a broker, from his widow in May 1998.During the vendor's early ownership he too drove the Bentley to Le Mans to watch the 24-hour race (in 2000 and 2001) and also drove it to Bruges, Belgium on a private tour with a group of 12 Bentleys. At the lunch stop, Jimmy Medcalf stated that the car had been travelling at a respectable 70-75mph on the motorway, while his brother Bill Medcalf, another Bentley Drivers' Club stalwart, remarked on how pretty it is. The only major mechanical work carried out concerns the crankshaft bearings, which have been re-white-metalled by renowned engineer, Arthur Archer of Great Dunmow. The body and chassis, though, have recently undergone extensive renovation by SJD Classic Restorations (Steve Downs) of Southminster, Essex. SJD disassembled the entire car, removing all bodywork from the chassis and stripping it of all mechanical components. The chassis and axle assemblies were then sand-blasted, prepared, primed and repainted. The aluminium body panels were removed from the timber frame and any rotten elements replaced. All bodywork was stripped back to bare metal and any damaged or corroded sections cut out and replaced with new aluminium. All panelling edges were replaced and the body tub skin refitted to the repaired frame. The wings, bonnet and scuttle were similarly repaired with new metal, as were the dickey seat lids, following which all bodywork was prepared, primed and repainted prior to refitting to the chassis. Other works carried out included repairing the wiring loom; fitting new shock absorbers and wheels; and re-plating the nickel brightwork, repairing it as necessary. Dated October 2019, SJD's invoice for £43,602 is on file. According to the vendor: 'The car has bags and bags of charisma and is a great joy to drive. It goes fast thanks to the lightweight body and stops quickly as well! In its current condition it has been described as 'resplendent''. 1977 Ford RS2000Registration no. RLT 248RChassis no. GCATL97706Odometer Reading: One mile since restorationMoT Expiry: 28/1/2020*Complete nut and bolt restoration*Rarely seen in this condition*Sensibly guidedEven the most distanced classic market watcher cannot have escaped the rising values of fast Fords in the past, but those with a blue oval appreciation would already have known about their excellent engineering, handling and performance, usually clothed in a relatively everyman bodyshell. The problem for today's would-be owner is finding a suitable car, so for anyone in the market for a Mk2 Escort RS2000, MPH proudly suggest this 1977 example. It was bought by the vendor two years ago and given a full, complete and intense nut-and-bolt restoration. The results speak for themselves or, as out vendor says, 'you won't find a better example on the market!'. It is clear the attention to detail cannot have been bettered: the bodywork and paint attest to careful execution, whether it is the straightness and alignment of the body panels, the application of the red paintwork or even the presentation of the external black trim, it is in the engine bay that attention to detail lives on. The interior is equally outstanding – seats, carpet, door panels and dashboard demonstrate a showroom-new air that is all-too-often never properly achieved. Equal attention has been applied to the car's underside and also its mechanicals, the vendor reporting the engine and the running gear are in excellent order throughout. In all, a thoroughly tempting offering for any fast Ford enthusiasts, or anyone who likes everyman performance cars from the pre-hatchback era. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Please note the odometer reading is 17.Please note the correct chassis number is GCATSL97706Vendor Score Total: 100/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. A Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Lobed Bowl, by Frank A Butler, in tones of blue, green and brown, impressed factory mark and dated 1880, incised 376 and FAB 26cm diameter (damaged) John Sparks said of Butler in 1880 ''Another artist who has made his mark on the ware by the originality of his forms is Frank A Butler. He is quite deaf and almost dumb, one of many thus heavily afflicted who has passed through the School. He began his artistic life as a designer of stained glass but his intention was not needed nor, I dare say, discovered in the practice of an art which is almost traditional. I introduced him to the new work and in a few months he bought out many new thoughts from the silent seclusion of his mind. A bold originality of treatment and the gift of invention are characteristic of his work. He has struck out many new paths. A certain massing together of floral forms and an ingenious treatment of discs, dots and interlacing lines indicate his hand. He not only produced designs for himself to execute but keeps three or four assistants busy by designing forms and patterns for them to carry out. His best work, perhaps, is that where ground is carved, leaving the pattern in relief, and he is facile princeps in the treatment of the wet clay vessel by squeezing it into shapes other than circular''.

•ROBERT OSCAR LENKIEWICZ (1941-2002) THE ALCHEMIST IN HIS LABORATORY Signed, oil on Masonite 91 x 120cm. * A typed label on the reverse reads: Michael Maier (the German 17th alchemist) can be seen observing the successful results of a long term transmutation. In his alembic are the `three stages` of the WORK, shown by the black, white and red birds; the body, soul and spirit in man; mercury, salt and sulphur in chemistry. It is these elements that when united in a special way produce the PHILOSOPHER'S STONE. On his table can also be seen the athanor, in the form of a wooden model, examples of which were reportedly seen in the `Schools` of the Alchemical masters, and which symbolised the seven `levels` of the human body. The book is opened at the pages illustrating alchemical symbols and the work of `Abraham the Jew`, the legendary figure who taught N. Flamel the French alchemist. The central figure can be seen holding the vase in which the sun and the moon emerge, these emphasise the importance of `opposites` in the alchemical process. To his right is the characteristic musician whose `melodies` were expected to help in some way the efforts to attain the Stone. The artist's son has informed the vendor that he believes that this work dates from c.1968. The artist's self portrait is found in the face of the central figure. ++ A few scratches and grazes lower right and elsewhere
