No. 694This roundel is one from a set of six depicting events surrounding the `Spanish Fury` of 1576.For a full set of the series in bronze see Victoria & Albert Museum, A33-38/1975.The `Tericos`, mercenaries in the service of the Spanish authorities, had not been paid, following Spain`s declaration of bankruptcy. Their consequent rampage through Antwerp in November saw three days of horror: the massacre of over 2500 citizens as the Tericos looted and burnt countless buildings, including the magnificent Town Hall.In August the following year a Netherlandish coalition overthrew the Spanish troops in the Citadel and it was subsequently demolished by the citizenry, as shown in the present roundel.Five of the subjects, including this scene, are derived from engravings by the Wierix brothers after drawings by Martin de Vos (1532-1603).Four of the drawings can be found in the Ashmolean at Oxford and one at the Metropolitan in New York. The fine detail and modelling of the figures on this series of circular plaquettes has led to the attribution to Jacques Jonghelinck, the medalist and sculptor who was Antwerp`s Master of the Mint at this period. For other lead roundels from this series see Morton & Eden, London, 14 June 2007, lot 589, Matthew Barton Ltd, London, 25 May 2012, lot 101, and Sotheby`s, New York, Cyril Humphris Collection, 11th January 1995, lot 324.See, C. Of Royal interest - An important Gold, Diamond, Seed Pearl and Enamel bracelet presented by Queen Victoria to her daughter Princess Alice the fine quality gold bracelet with applied Gothic style strapwork and foliate engraved decoration within dark blue enamelled borders, set with two dark blue enamel and gold ovals inclined towards each other, one depicting a ship in full sail within a border of twenty-six seed pearls, the other a bust portrait of Princess Alice within a border of twenty-six old cut diamonds, the two ovals surmounted by a diamond set red enamel crown and with a diamond set six-pointed star beneath, the inside face of the bracelet engraved in script with the inscription, "To dear Alice from her loving parents Albert and Victoria R who though visibly parted are ever united, April 25 1862" * Queen Victoria was renowned for her fondness for commemorating important events during her reign with presentation jewels. This bracelet was presented to Princess Alice to mark the occasion of her departure to commence a new life in Darmstadt in Hesse, prior to her marriage to Prince Louis of Hesse on 1st July 1862. It is one of the most important examples of Victoria`s presentation jewels to have been offered on the open market for many years, commemorating an event of great personal significance to her second eldest daughter, who had become her closest companion and effective head of the Royal household at a time of huge grief and turmoil within the family so shortly after the death of Prince Albert. It is probable that the jewel was commissioned prior to Albert`s death in December 1861, the inscription`s reference to `visibly parted` originally intended as a reference to Alice`s departure overseas, but gaining additional poignancy owing to her father`s passing.

A silver coloured twin handled bowl, unmarked, of late 17th century Continental form, with a shaped border, twin mask and scroll handles, lobed decoration, embossed with a foliate band, engraved with an armorial, a monogram ‘AB’ pricked beneath, 24cm (9 1/2in) long, 428g (13.75 oz). This is the shield of BILLINGSLEY quartering Billingsley (ancient) and HARLOW. Records surviving from 1480 show how five successive landowners, all named Roger, of a family who had acquired their name from a Shropshire village named Billingsley, used a neatly contrived shield with five stars on a cross between four lions. Then an adventurous spirit migrated to Canterbury and his descendants on to London. By 1568 a William Billingshurst had made his mark as a Freeman and Haberdasher of the City and still used the same family shield. When this William’s son, Sir Henry, was elected Lord Mayor in 1596 he aspired to a simple more dignified shield, indeed one with regal overtones. Sir Henry was granted a new coat of arms bearing a single gold fleur-de-lis on a red field with a gold corner. He relegated his age-old family shield into a subsidiary position and later generations have evidently used the two together ever since. . From the collection of Laurence W. Hodson (1863-1933) and descendants, thence by descent.

Jason Wason, British, b.1946 - A square studio ceramic platter in the Japanese taste, mid/ late 20th century, the white clay body of shallow dish form decorated with metal oxide and turquoise stripes, the platter supported upon rectangular block feet also with conforming decoration. Bearing two impressed maker`s seals to verso, 10cm high x 28cm wide x 25cm deep. (May be subject to Droit de Suite). Note: Wason was born in Liverpool and spent six years at the Leach Pottery (from 1976), giving him a strong sense of workshop discipline and technical competence in glaze techniques and also the ability to throw whatever shape he had in mind; after completing his commitment to producing the standard ware range of the Leach Pottery, he had the freedom to experiment with his own designs. He endeavoured to introduce into a pot a sense of motion, energy and vitality, and his pots are of a ritualistic and ceremonial nature, much inspired by travels in Africa, India and the Middle East, where his search for a nation`s pottery caused him to become involved in concerns for the preservation of indigenous peoples` physical and cultural survival. He has been working on his own from his home studio since the 1980s. Wason teaches ceramics at the Penzance School of Art, Penzance. He is married to the ceramics artist Joanna WASON, who works and teaches at the LEACH POTTERY, St Ives.

Leggatt); Private collection, England/Exhibited: Royal Academy, 1798, no.538 (Inside of Exeter Cathedral); Manchester, Art Treasures Exhibition, 1857, no.74; London, The Burlington Fine Arts Club, 1875, no.44/Literature: Gentleman's Magazine, 1803, vol. LXXIII, p.187; CF Bell, 'Fresh Light on some Water-colour Painters of the Old British School', Walpole Society, vol. V, 1917, pp.76-77; T Girtin and D Loshak, The Art of Thomas Girtin, London 1954, p.208/Note: This watercolour, among the largest in existence by Thomas Girtin, was shown at the Royal Academy in 1798, a fruit of his tour of Devon in 1797. It was bought by the Cheapside linen-draper and keen antiquarian James Moore, one of Girtin's earliest patrons, descending in the Moore-Miller family until sold at Christie's in 1916./From 1791 to 1795 Girtin worked for Moore, translating his pencil drawings of gothic cathedrals and monuments into more sophisticated watercolours. Girtin based his first important Royal Academy watercolour of 1794, Ely Cathedral (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), on a drawing by Moore. The following year he showed at the RA his first independent watercolours of medieval cathedral façades, Peterborough Cathedral and Lichfield Cathedral./The interior of Exeter Cathedral reflects Girtin's interest in the sublimity of gothic architecture, an interest paralleled in contemporaneous watercolours by Turner. The play of light on the intricate interior is achieved by means of broad, translucent watercolour washes in blues, greys and buff, with delicate details added over them in a deeper brown with a fine brush tip. Girtin on his 1797 tour experimented with the use of Chinese white (gouache) highlights, evident here in the sunlit ribs of the nave and the east window. The radical playwright James Holcroft, who met Girtin in Paris in 1802, commented that the artist 'delighted in and had studied the Gothic'. The present watercolour, rare in Girtin's work in showing the interior of a building, invokes both the soaring grace and the monumentality of these testaments to Faith./Our thanks go to Susan Morris for confirming the attribution of the painting and writing the footnote/see illustration Condition Report: The paper has gone a little brown and the white shows up more than intended other wise in good condition

JIM BAXTER OF RANGERS FC, HIS INTERNATIONAL CAP this international cap mounted and framed with an image of the player was on display at Rangers FC for several years from 2005. The lot is accompanied by original newspaper pages reporting Jim Baxter`s determination in reclaiming this cap, one of only five ever presented to him. The lot is also accompanied by a signed photograph showing this and three other of his caps James Curran Baxter (29 September 1939 - 14 April 2001) was a left-footed Scottish footballer who played as a midfielder. He is generally regarded[2] as one of the country`s greatest ever players. He was born, educated and started his career in Fife, but his peak playing years were in the early 1960s with the Glasgow club Rangers, whom he helped to win ten trophies between 1960 and 1965, and where he became known as "Slim Jim". However he started drinking heavily during a four-month layoff caused by a leg fracture in December 1964, his fitness suffered, and he was transferred to Sunderland in summer 1965. In two and a half years at Sunderland he played 98 games and scored 12 goals, becoming known for drinking himself unconscious the night before a match and playing well the next day. At the end of 1967 Sunderland transferred him to Nottingham Forest, who gave him a free transfer back to Rangers in 1969 after 50 games. After a further year with Rangers Baxter retired from football in 1970, at the age of 31. From 1961 to 1967, he was a leading member of a strong Scottish international team that lost only once to England, in 1965, shortly after he recovered from the leg fracture. He thought his best international performance was a 2-1 win against England in 1963, when he scored both goals after Scotland were reduced to 10 players - left back Eric Caldow had his leg broken in a tackle with Bobby Smith. In the 1967 match against England, who had won the 1966 World Cup, he taunted the opposition by ball juggling while waiting for his team-mates to find good positions. Although he was given most of the credit for the 3-2 win, some commentators wished he had made an effort to run up a bigger score. In his prime, Baxter was known for his ability to raise a team`s morale, his good tactical vision, precise passing and ability to send opponents the wrong way - and for being a joker on the pitch. He also broke with Glasgow tradition by becoming friendly with several members of their major Glasgow rivals, Celtic. Although he gained a reputation as a womaniser when he moved to Glasgow, he married in 1965 and had two sons. The marriage broke up in 1981, and in 1983 he formed another relationship that lasted the rest of his life. After retiring from football he became manager of a pub, and his continued heavy drinking damaged his liver so badly that he needed two transplants at the age of 55, after which he swore off alcohol. Baxter was also addicted to gambling, and is estimated to have lost between £250,000 and £500,000. After he died of pancreatic cancer in 2001, his funeral was held in Glasgow Cathedral and his ashes were buried at Rangers` Ibrox Stadium. In 2003, a statue was erected in his honour at his hometown, Hill of Beath. Information from Wikipedia
