PETER LANYON Collaged Book Circa 1956 (See illustration) The book is a 1934 copy of 'The Story Of Cornwall' by A.K. Hamilton Jenkin. Upon the front cover under the title, Lanyon has pasted "THE WADDINGTON Guide" from printed cut outs. On the second page is pasted a piece of a compliments slip from Gimpel Fils Gallery, Lanyon's London dealers in Mayfair. In the book Lanyon is mischievously poking fun at his fellow artists; Terry Frost, Patrick Heron, Roger Hilton, John Wells and Bryan Wynter, who were all represented by The Waddington Galleries in Cork Street. Lanyon was the only 'native' Cornishman amongst the group, whereas the others were all 'incomers'. Various illustrated pages in the book have been 'doctored' by Lanyon and allude to jokes and tensions between the artists. The first photograph in the book is of the Tamar Bridge, to which has been added a tiny Peter Lanyon chiselling away at the base of the bridge, in order, we suppose, to bring it down and keep the foreigners out. The next collaged photograph is of Lanyon Quoit: A colour image of Patrick Heron is precariously placed upon the top of the quoit, with strings tied to his wrists and ankles. The strings are being pulled and controlled by two small Peter Lanyons on either side of the quoit. Scattered throughout the book are 14 carefully constructed collages featuring Lanyon's artists. In some, a head has been simply replaced; near the end of the book John Wells' head tops the suit of armour of the renowned seaman Sir Richard Grenville. On page 53, Terry Frost's head has been stuck onto the body of Anthony Payne, the Cornish Giant, he also holds one of his pictures which has been painted by Lanyon in grey. Bryan Wynter's head appears comically poking out of a fogou (a Cornish, pre-historic underground chamber). The page depicting the Merry Maidens stone circle, upon which several woman who look like magazine models have been superimposed (along with Lanyon and a dancing sailor) refers to an occasion when the hip London photographer Cornel Lucas was sent to Cornwall to photograph the St Ives artists with fashion models in their studios. It is not difficult to imagine the amusement this idea generated. The person most teased in these collages is Patrick Heron, who Lanyon had a falling out with over mining in Cornwall. In the most detailed collage, Heron stands firing a gun at a Cornish mining pump house, at his feet is a large self portrait in a heavy frame, whilst overhead, a glider, presumably containing Lanyon, swoops down like an attacking bird. We have not been able to identify the subjects in all the collages. Lanyon regularly sent satirical collaged cards to his friends and family but this book is a more unusual and elaborate creation. He had a wicked sense of humour and liked to poke fun at those that took themselves too seriously. Although we can only suppose what inspired this book, humour and satire were an important part of Lanyon and his work. Authenticated by Andrew Lanyon. From the effects of Sir Terry Frost. Condition Report: Book itself is in fair condition as are the collages.

A vintage Burns Sonic electric guitar circa 1960 This is a fine example of a 56 year old Burns Sonic in all-original and fully working condition, dated at 1960 by the very rare hardwood neck with lacquered Maple fingerboard, which was only fitted in 1960, the first year of manufacture. Charm and charisma simply radiate from this early pioneer of the British music scene. Exhibiting signs of natural wear, or the more modern preferred term “road-worn” (more like naturally aged) on the body, this model features two of the coveted Burns Tri-Sonic pick-ups on a black scratch plate. Volume and tone controls with rhythm/solo switch and three way selector switch offer the player a good range of tonal variance and surprisingly clear and mellow sound. The original Burns metal adjustable bridge has been set to offer standard intonation and an early style Burns tremolo is fitted with the arm stamped with “Burns Pat. App.” This model is, the first year of manufacture. Speculatively, this model would therefore be one of the first 100 built. The original enclosed Van Ghent style machine heads are fully functional and feature cream buttons. For many people, the name of Burns will always be connected with The Shadows. The group started working with Jim Burns as early as 1962 and legend has it that Burns had to make at least 30 prototypes of that guitar until Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch were finally satisfied. It was Burns who refinished John Lennon's 1958 natural Rickenbacker 325 to black. George Harrison used a Burns Nu-Sonic Bass on Paperback Writer and many of the best of British guitarists have at some point played a Burns guitar or bass. To mention a few: Billy Bragg, Cast, T-Rex, Eric Clapton, James, Yes, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, Mark Knopfler, Oasis and Supergrass, Jeff Lynne, The Small Faces, Brian May, John Mayall, The New Seekers, Jimmy Page, Slade, Status Quo, Texas, The Troggs and Bert Weedon. They’ve also been seen in the hands of a few cool Americans including Beck, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.

GERARD BURNS (OFFERED AT NO RESERVE), RED COAT IN WINTER oil on canvas, signed 60cm x 40cm Framed Note: This painting is being offered at no reserve and the proceeds from the sale will be paid, at the request of Gerard Burns, to Sian Smith to help fund two years of study at The New York Academy of Art. Sian Smith is an award winning young Scottish artist based in Glasgow. In March she was awarded a place at The New York Academy of Art.. The New York Academy of Art was founded in 1982 by artists, scholars and patrons of the arts, including Andy Warhol, to foster a resurgence in the training of figurative and representational art. The Academy has since developed into a non-profit cultural institution housing the nation's first graduate school of figurative art, a continuing education program, the region's most in-depth figurative art library, an extensive exhibition and lecture series, and iconic New York City events such as Take Home a Nude and Tribeca Ball. The NYAA fees alone are approximately £24,000 a year and Sian needs to raise funds to pay for her attendance and her living expenses. Sian is a determined and talented individual and we have no doubt that she will make her mark in New York. Funds raised from the sale of this lot and the following three lots will help Sian take full advantage of this rare and prestigious opportunity. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Sian Smith recently (2014) graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. Smith's practice centres around the main theme of intimacy, her aim is to create artwork in a variety of media which reflect this. Predominantly a painter, Smith has always had a strong interest in body language and film both of which are key influences in her artwork. It is her hope to portray the vulnerability, fragility and beauty of the figure through paint. Sian has already exhibited her work on fourteen occasions at venues including Galley Heinzel (Aberdeen), The Morningside Gallery (Edinburgh), Artfusion (Glasgow), Green Gallery (Stirling), Cooper Gallery (Dundee) and La Galerie 1940 (Edinburgh). A remarkable track record given how difficult it is for young artists to gain gallery exposure in Scotland. Sian was a selected participant in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year (2014) and her second Solo Exhibition will take place at Green Gallery (Stirling) in May having achieved a complete sell-out at the same venue in March 2015.. The following three lots have been submitted by Sian and they offer potential bidders the opportunity to invest in the work of an artist who unquestionably has the potential to become a substantial figure in the British contemporary art market. A potential that has already been recognised by the private art gallery sector in Scotland and by the prestigious academic institution that is The New York Academy of Arts.
