It gives me a wonderful sense of contributing when my art creates money for a greater cause. Art can impact in many ways aside from hanging on a wall, it is astonishing to think that in some cases my art could save a life. Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your design I celebrate colour in my abstract, contemporary and Pop Art styles. I chose Pop Art as the style for my 9 of Hearts Card as I wanted to simplify the image and increase the visual strength through colour.Art produces the happy hormone when it is viewed, so hopefully my piece will have the same effect. What is it about the charity Transplant Links that made you want to support themI always try to be involved in health care art related projects. Annie has for many years taught art classes in Surrey, including the University of Surrey, where her work is held in the University’s prestigious art collection. I see my work as a contemporary interpretation of the tradition of Romantic landscape painting. It is inspired by an emotional response to the natural world, investigating the often transient qualities of time, space, memories or emotions with expressive semi-abstract painting. My painting process evolves through transforming and abstracting the subject. Layers of transparent paint are applied to the surface to create an atmospheric quality that suggest an unveiling or discovery of the poetic mystery of the landscape. www.annieboisseau.com. I was very happy to be involved in the last TLC Art Auction and to learn about the amazing work the charity does in developing kidney transplant services in countries where it is needed most. It's a great feeling to be a small part of something that makes such a big difference simply by donating an artwork!.When I heard that this year's Art Auction was going to be the theme of a Deck of cards, I thought ' brilliant ' , Christmas presents sorted!.I jumped in quite quickly with wanting to paint the Ace of spades. I didn't want to do something too obvious, so I decided to paint a brooding atmospheric landscape which could be seen through the framework of the Ace of spades. This offers a choice of either retaining the whole 'Ace' or removing the mount to reveal the full landscape! Either way, I hope it goes towards helping this ace charity! Robert Fitzmaurice (b.1960). 3 of Spades. Mixed media on card. 28 x 20cm. Framed. Robert Fitzmaurice: I am a visual artist whose output involves painting, mixed media and collage. My figurative style is fragmentary and references both the art of the past and contemporary culture. I usually work in series with each work involving an interplay between one or more figures and ambiguous forms in order to invoke a particular mood, e.g. contemplative, melancholy, or dramatic. The figures operate in a shallow, theatrical space and tend to possess the frontality and expressive shorthand common to votive art of all cultures. These elements combine to suggest an absurd universe where meaning is fluid and open to interpretation. Often I will start a series of works with an idea inspired by something recently seen or read. Other times I may work more instinctively from images found in books, postcards, the cinema or online. I may also start a new work by tracing an old drawing, or the overpainting and collaging of earlier works, especially proof prints and print matrices. The composition is then subjected to a number of revisions and embellishments. The paint layers involve open brushwork, impasto and glazes, and are often further modified by the introduction of sand, sawdust or collage elements. Colour decisions are driven by the emotional tone and to balance the composition. I am very interested in how the mind assigns value to imagination and experience and how these meet to produce a work or art. My tendency to simplify, filter and truncate is in response to the fragmented and bewildering surfeit of images available to contemporary audiences. Artists of different periods and cultures have used the human figure in order to convey a narrative or personify a concept. By referencing the formal potency of these otherwise outmoded and compromised systems I wish to draw attention to a common ground, or sometimes a point of departure, in order to highlight the absurdities that continue to divide us. The power dynamics of childhood, family and rites of passage feature strongly as I consider they have a universal significance that transcends religion, myth or dogma. Originally from Coventry I studied Fine Art in Sunderland before moving to Reading in 1984 for my MFA. After years of making art around a day-job I became a full-time artist in 2015. I hold a studio in the town at OpenHand OpenSpace and participate regularly in exhibitions nationally and internationally. www.fitzmaurice.works. Interview with the artist: Why did you want to take part in this fundraising initiative I was invited to participate in the 2016 TLC Art Auction and really enjoyed being part of that. I therefore didn't hesitate to get on board with this project. Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your designMy design includes a small central sprite realised through the union of the three spades. In my work I am interested in invoking the figure through a mixture of figuration and abstraction. The spades suit suggested to me a rather austere and weathered character which I have sought to reflect in my choice of materials and surface effects. What is it about the charity Transplant Links that made you want to support them I am very impressed by the important work TLC does in developing countries. Their work makes life-saving operations a reality for those in need. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Ewbank's are waiving all vendor commission for the charity. Transplant Links Community is a UK registered non-religious and non-political charity that saves the lives of children and adults in the developing world who suffer from life-threatening end stage kidney disease. Offering teaching and advice, and carrying out living kidney transplants, sharing their knowledge with local medical teams in a variety of countries - so that sustainable transplant programmes become a possibility for the future.

She is married to the actor Jim Broadbent. www.anastasialewis.co.uk. I responded to the request from TLC because I was moved to read about their work and the fact they were so very focused about that particular specialised need, that for me that made the charity's aims easy to comprehend. With regards to 'Winter Lights' this piece belongs to series of non figurative works which explore the effects of sunlight on the rural landscapes and buildings of Lincolnshire where I am lucky enough to work for several months each year. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Her illustrative work often explores themes of nature, pattern and tradition using a wide range of media, particularly lino printing and paper cutting, as well as varied drawing methods. Hazel is currently available for both private and commercial commission, and has recently been working on a number of projects. She is proud to support TLC and help to fund their fantastic work. www.hazelpartridge.co.uk. Interrview with the artist: Why did you want to take part in this fundraising initiativeWhen I was invited to take part, I thought that the idea for the deck of cards was a really fun and clever way of amassing a body of work that connects each artist under a common theme but that also allows a huge amount of creative freedom- I was excited! Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your design I have created a multilayered papercutting to represent the seven of spades. The design shows a golden chameleon hiding in the forest, and the seven spades are concealed in his pattern. I was really inspired by the artist Tony Meuwissen's beautiful body of illustrated cards The Key to the Kingdom, and I also wanted to created something modern and fun which influenced my choice of theme and colours. What is it about the charity Transplant Links that made you want to support themI just think that they are a fantastic, motivated and hardworking small charity! I have seen firsthand how lifechanging an organ transplant can be so the issue is very close to my heart. I also love their fundraising ideas (like this!) and believe that they are a responsible charity, unlike some that we hear of in the news. Richard Galloway (b.1980). 8 of Spades. Hand painted linocut on Japanese paper. Signed, marked 1/1. 44.3 x 31.5cm. Framed. Richard Galloway: The starting point for my dark narratives is the world around me. I am right there in the middle of the action, at the local barbers, in the boozer or in the betting shop, or rising pre-dawn to accompany dustmen on their morning rounds. Using my vocabulary of marks and motifs I have built up a high street of London hangouts were all the sinners and saints take their roles in my morality play. Dolor conjures up an entirely imagined allegoric snapshot with the vantage point now zoomed out, a fictitious sin-city thriving with ideas of social change, conflict, faith and struggle, while satirical observations celebrate all that is ludicrous and enchanting about English life and society. The new series following on from Dolor shows my environment slipping further away from civility. Cramped layers of futile growth show people bathing, fishing and drinking in the sputum the factories pump out. The children are stuffed with junk food, taking on the characteristics of the hyenas which eat the perishing bodies of the dead because the morgues are bursting. The elected come round to see for themselves but are protected by their own henchmen. Women share damp tunnels with the rats as they breast feed their young touting for work with CV's in marketing experience rather than sex. The streets are shop less the spaces they vacate are now housing the rapists, pedophiles fraudsters and bankers.Any open space is left as no mans land where anything goes. High speed trains deliver more people in on the hour from a volcanic distance which itself is in self destruction as smoke and laver spills from its seams. Helicopter gun ships circle firing rockets to secure the euthanasia. www.richardgalloway.co.uk. Tamsin Relly (b.1981). 9 of Spades. Water based monotype on Somerset paper (300GSM). 57 x 41cm. Framed. Signed, marked 1/1. This image has been adjusted to appear as the 9 of spades in the printed deck of cards, but the original artwork is for the 10 of spades. Tamsin Relly: Tamsin Relly is a London based visual artist who works across a range of media - including painting, print-making and drawing. South African born, she moved to London in 2009 and completed her Masters in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School in 2011.Relly’s practice reflects on the increasingly disrupted weather conditions of a shifting global climate and explores notions of wilderness, erased or constructed for industry or leisure.Drawing reference material from both found media imagery and first hand observations, Relly works with the fluid and unpredictable qualities of painting and printmaking to present impressions of urban and natural environments in states of uncertainty or impermanence.Research includes visiting and studying diverse locations such as receding glaciers in Svalbard in the Arctic Circle; displaced wildlife in zoos; and the fabricated oasis of Las Vegas and depletion of its surrounding water sources. www.tamsinrelly.com. Lizzie Riches (b.1950). 10 of Spades. A4 size, gouache on paper. Framed. Lizzie Riches was born in East London in 1950 and grew up near Epping Forest, where she first developed a love of natural history. Lizzie went to Camberwell School of Art and to Goldsmiths, but felt out of sympathy with the painting styles of the late sixties and preferred to develop her own visual language. Riches lived for many years in rural Suffolk, however it was not the landscape that inspired her, but the birds, animals, plants and insects that she found there. Her interests have widened to exotic flora and fauna and she is particularly fascinated by the relationship between human civilisation and the natural world. Portal Painters first exhibited Lizzie Riches work in 1976 and she has exhibited with them ever since, Lizzie has had solo exhibitions in Chicago and Paris. In 1990 London Transport commissioned a painting as part of the ‘Art in the Underground’ series. Recent commissions include sixteen paintings for P&O’s luxury cruise liner ‘Aurora’ many of which show her current passion for painting people. A series of eighteen paintings depicting the character and history of the classic and noble grape varieties were commissioned by Websters Wine Publishers for 'Grapes & Wines' by Oz Clarke. In 2000, Leopold Joseph Private Bank acquired and commissioned several paintings for their boardroom. In the same year Lizzie undertook an eighty foot mural for a country house in Kent. In the summer of 2012 Lizzie undertook a series of eighteen paintings for an exhibition in the National Trust property Blickling Hall in Norfolk. The exhibition was in the world famous seventeenth century library and reflected the history of the family and gardens. A recent series of portrait ‘anomalies’ with people portrayed in Elizabethan and Jacobean clothes with a contemporary element have proved very popular. Lizzie Riches often undertakes commissioned paintings, usually portraits executed in her own imaginative style. Riches paintings are in The Sainsbury, Standard Chartered and Prudential Collections and in 2016 Lizzie was commissioned to undertake a number of paintings for the Restaurant and Bar area of the recently refurbished Queen Mary, these were loosely in the style of Doris Zinkheisen who had painted the original murals. Lizzie Riches exhibits exclusively with Portal Painters at the major London Art Fairs. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Fiona Bradford. Jack of Spades, 'Fish Hook'. Signed verso: 'Fishhook, Oil on board, Fiona Bradford'. Oil on board. 9 x 6.5cm. Framed. Fiona Bradford: My practice is an attempt to articulate the space between what 'there is' and 'there is not'; a point of potential immanence. This is not a tactic for avoidance or resolution, but a curiosity about the transformative and mutable potential of the medium. The work is informed by ideas related to the principles of emptiness and uncertainty. Emptiness, is not seen as a 'thing' or 'state of being,' but rather a process or 'state of becoming'. In relation to painting I use uncertainty as a tool - a way to figure my practice by using 'uncertainty purposefully'. These persistent interchanges between the tools and my intentions convey an agitation- an unavoidable restlessness in the work. It also reflects my confusion about what painting should be and what I should paint. It's messy. Repeated trial and error with pigments, oils, airbrush, spray painting and collage does not preclude other modes of working such as daydreaming and deferral. Experimenting with strategies such as hesitation, delay and deceleration lead me down dubious alleyways, only to retrace my steps in concentric circles. As an artist my task as I see it is to try and apprehend these reverberations. www.fionabradford.com. John Renshaw (b.1946). King of Spades. Gouache, crayon, pencil. Signed under mount. 29.7 x 21cm. I happened to receive a very unexpected (and persuasive) letter from Baroness Floella Benjamin inviting me to participate - how could one refuse Coincidentally, I also happened to know of someone awaiting a kidney transplant at the time. My playing card design for ‘The King of Spades’ was selected intuitively and simply resulted in an image that referenced both a king and a spade! I wanted to support Transplant Links because I considered the statement appearing on the project web-site appeared to say it all. ‘…what TLC do is allow patients who have been dealt a rough hand the chance to change their life for the better through transplantation'. Why did you want to take part in this fundraising initiative A fantastic brief, an amazing line up of artists and throughly worthwhile charity. Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your design When making a charity artwork, the importance is in creating something unique to the cause. But creating a special artwork is only half the story, it also requires a buyer/collector to dig deep and purchase it to help raise those vital funds. For me, the team of Jennie and Aimee was the inspiration - The TLC team on top of St Paul’s reaching for the moon, taking their work from England to the rest of the world. They are surrounded by diamonds in the sky, each one a life saved. What is it about the charity Transplant Links that made you want to support them TLC’s two person mission to help save lives deserves all the support and exposure it can get to help achieve their goals. Where knowledge and wisdom can help save the lives of children and adults, you want to support this however you can. I can’t perform kidney transplant surgery... but I can create fine art. We do our bit, so they can do theirs.
