The awards of James Rennie, CB, Indian Navy 1827-1857 who was recommended for the Victoria Cross following the Persian campaign, comprising CB in gold, bearing Geo III hallmark (date letter not visible due to case mounting), (1 lion missing from angles); China 1842, now fitted with scroll suspender and now engraved James Rennie Lieut HEICS Sesostris; IGS 1854, 2 clasps Pegu, Persia, (similar scroll suspender and similarly engraved in block serif capitals Comr Rennie “In Steam Frigate Zenobia”); France, gold medal “Ministre De La Marine - À Rennie Capne De La Marine Anglaise - Service Rendu À un Navire Francais 1853” GEF. Framed. See Front cover. During the China War James Rennie was in command of the Hon East India Company ship Sesostris. A family history by Alastair John Rennie (not included in lot) states “On 31August the “Sesostris” assisted in covering the landings of troops and Marines in face of intense Chinese fire from their fortresses and batteries...”During the next year the fleets and transports carried out landings at Tinghae, Chinhae, Ningpo Tsekee, Chapoo, and finally ... to Nanking...In all these operations Sesostris played a conspicuous role and James won a high reputation for his courage and dash leading his marines in many assaults on the formidable Chinese defences.” During the Burmese War 1852-53 James was promoted to Commander of the Indian Marine vessel Zenobia. He was present at the capture Rangoon and Bassein. “In the absence of any help from the military, he volunteered the services of his ship and blue jackets to help the Deputy Commissioner at Bassein, Captain Fitch, pacify the hinterland and rid if of Burmese forces still giving trouble. Twice he did this and convincingly proved himself as good a soldier as he was a sailor. He led his force, together with naval guns, through the densest jungle in a climate which had proved fatal to many European (sic) and succeeded brilliantly in trapping the Burmese forces, numbering some 3,000...” For his services Commander Rennie received a Sword of Honour from the Court of Directors of the East India Company. Throughout the Persian campaign Rennie commanded the ship Firoze. The family history again relates “it was resolved to attack Mohammerah, a fortress at the head of the Gulf defended by some 13,000 Persians....Sir James Outram wrote “on 24 March a boat with muffled oars, ..proceeded up the river to choose a position for a mortar battery, but when closely under the forts, it was discovered that the selected site for the mortar was a swamp. The ingenuity of Commander Rennie came to the rescue with the proposal of a mortar raft and in defiance of the engineers who said the first shot would smash it, a raft was constructed during the night, under Commander Rennie’s direction, of casks and studding sail booms securely lashed together and being manned by the Bombay Artillery...was towed up to its position opposite the Northern Fort”. On 26 March ...the Indian Navy frigates proceeded to the attack. The Firoze and Assaye moved up the river to a position opposite the northern battery and after an hours bombardment from the ships and the mortar battery, the order to close was given. The Firoze and Assaye then moved to within sixty yards of the earthworks and at about 10 0’clock the magazine of the northern fort blew up...The British loss was only ten killed and thirty wounded. The Persian army of 13,000 was beaten and dispersed losing some 300 killed...” and it was reported that “Commander Rennie’s happy thought of placing around the bulwarks of several vessels trusses of pressed hay in which the musket balls of the Persian matchlock men lodged without injury to anyone, thus 300 bullets were found buried in the sides of the Firoze and vast numbers were taken out of the hay trusses.” On 23 May 1857 General Outram, in a letter to the Chairman of the HEIC states “In due course I will send the names of individual officers who are worthy of distinction; some I hope may gain even that greatest of all distinctions, the Victoria Cross. One especially, Commander Rennie of the Indian Navy, will be found to have earned a just claim to it.” James was awarded the CB at this time.

A very Rare Chinese `Poissardes` Coffee Cup, c.1745, of large size and decorated in a rich famille-rose palette with poppies and other flowers surrounding cartouches enclosing a red fish, red floret mark, minute chip and feint crack, 8cm It is thought that the service with this pattern was ordered from les Compagnie de Indes by the Poissardes, detractors of Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV, whose married name was Poisson (fish). Madame, who rose to be almost as powerful as the King himself, would never have allowed any such design as she was acutely embarrassed by her name. Pieces rarely appear on the market and the order must have been a small one although comprehensive. It included two bourdalou! For a plate with the fish, see China for the West, Howard, David and Ayers, John, 1978, vol ii, no 449.

A COLLECTION OF CHINESE 17TH CENTURY BLUE & WHITE PORCELAIN Europe saw three periods of `Chinamania` between the 17th and 20th centuries. The first in the early 17th with the kraak wares, the second with chinoiserie from the mid-18th century until the early 19th, , and again when the aesthetes went china crazy in the last decades of the century. Collectors vied for the best pieces - almost invariably Kangxi (1662-1722) blue and white, the best of sapphire-blue tone driving up prices only to see the craze vanish as quickly as it had begun. One devotee was the American painter James MacNeil Whistler who illustrated some of the pieces in the collection of Sir Henry Thompson (1878). One of the present lots no.145 is closely akin to no.203 in that Catalogue. Although modest, this offering is typical of a forgotten era. A double-gourd Vase, c.1640, trekked and washed with a literatus reading in a garden, a boy approaching, the upper bulb with stiff leaves, rim frits, 20.5cm A vase of similar form and decoration and the same size was raised by Captain Hatcher from the junk dated 1643, see The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes,1988, pl. 61.

1930`s felt faced Doll with a GWR, lapel badged Uniform and a GWR inscribed Cap. Most interesting history being won by the Vendors mother, Miss Ethel Partridge, in a raffle at Paddington Station Refreshment Rooms in the early 1930`s. She was a GWR employee who, as a teenager, left the Forest of Dean for the bright lights of London to work for the GWR. She lodged at the company accommodation Westbourne Terrace and the vendor remembers her mother relating the story that the GWR Police escorted them to and from work because they had to pass the rather disreputable Eastbourne Terrace!. Shows age and has one foot half detached. Requires a good clean but a very historic item indeed.

Nameplate GOLD COAST. Ex Stanier 4-6-0 Jubilee Class Locomotive built at Crewe Works in 1934. Originally numbered 5610 then later 45610 by BR. Named in 1936 after the then British Colony in West Africa, it was a well cherished, Derby locomotive throughout its career. When Gold Coast became independent in 1960 and changed to Ghana, the locomotive was renamed by the High Commissioner Mr E.O. Asafu-Adjaye at Euston station on 12th December 1958. Both Gold Coast nameplates were destined for the scrap bin but were recovered by a then Derby Works Engineer, who was allowed to purchase them for the scrap value. One plate was given to a friend, this one kept, much to the envy of many ex Derby Works men and other enthusiasts over the years. Punch marked twice on the rear indicating it to be the right hand plate, it measures 34½" in length. Lightly polished face with a red ground. The wooden display board and flush fixings accompany separately. Undoubtedly the very best name of all the `Colony` Jubilees.

A fine Chinese ‘Ge ware’ vase, Yongzheng six character seal mark and of the period, the base with a Bluett and Sons label , accompanied by a matching wood stand of typical archaistic ‘hu’ form with a ribbed bulbous body, a slightly spreading foot, elephant head handles to the sides and a slightly flaring neck, covered with an light greenish grey glaze with an irregular ‘fine wire’ dark grey crackle within which are very fine gilt crackle lines, the foot rim dressed in a dark brown wash and the base with a well drawn six character Yongzheng seal mark in underglaze blue and an affixed Bluett and Sons label, the matching stand probably 19th century. Provenance : By descent from the vendor’s father who received advice concerning many of his acquisitions from the celebrated English collector H.M.Knight who died in 1970. Perhaps held in low esteem at the time because of the damage this vase was used as a lamp, fortunately with a removable metal fittingwhich, when taken away, revealed a piece in excellent condition apart from the old visible chip at the top. ‘Ge’ and ‘Guan’ type glazes were copied for the court during the eighteenth century and various marked examples are known. The ‘Ge’pieces tend to have a more matt glaze as here and the crackle lines are more precisely defined. Two types are known; perhaps the rarer one is as here where the dark grey crackle is combined with a fine gilt floss effect. Original ALS dated 26/10/17 No. 56 Squadron, R.F.C., B.E.F., and addressed, the day before he was killed, believed shot down at Polterrjebrug, very near the front line, at approx. 11:08, British time, by Leutnant Karl Gallwitz, at the time acting Staffelfuhrer of Jasta Boelke, to Frida Mond, later to marry Herbert Brackley, ‘Thanks ever so much for your letter. I was so glad to get news of your family again. I hope you are enjoying your new French School: and I am so glad you seem to have liked Oxford. I hope I shall see when I go there after the war, if I continue to have my present luck in the scrapping. It really is splendid fun if you take it in the right way. Though somehow one has not that immense satisfaction which the people on the ground have that they have done their in the beastly business. Personally I feel I have done nothing at all! Remember me to all the family & excuse haste. Sincerely yours Arthur Rhys Davids. Arthur Rhys Davids was just twenty when he was shot down and killed, he had been on the Western Front with 56 Squadron for six months, having gone straight into the RFC from Eton. He came to public fame as ‘Eton’s Boy Airman’ through shooting down German ace Werner Voss and he is remembered among other things as the pilot who always carried while flying a small volume of William Blake’s poetry which had been given to him as a Christmas present by his sister in 1916. The exact details and circumstance of Arthur Rhys Davids’s last fight and death are not known but it seems likely that both he and Voss lie in complete obscurity, probably under five miles apart somewhere in the area of Ypres. A copy of the biography of Arthur Rhys Davids entitled ‘Brief Glory’, by Alex Revell, published in 1984, is included in this lot. (1)

* ‘The Avroplane’. An important Pioneer and “Daily Mail” Prize-contest design model by Edwin Alliot Verdon-Roe, 1907, a unique exhibition display model of a pioneer flying-machine, created by Alliott Verdon-Roe (the founder of AVRO and Saunders-Roe Aircraft Companies) later knighted for his services to the Aviation Industry, this model, numbered “B2”, is the second maquette for his winning example of two versions submitted for the prize-contest sponsored by the Daily Mail, for a free-flight aeroplane design. Of biplane format utilising pusher-type airscrew powered by a three cylinder Anzani motor, the open-work wire-braced wooden airframe featuring a large forward-mounted lifting-surface, under which was situated the pilot’s control-seat, with dual surface main-planes to the rear, and with additional movable aileron-control surfaces mounted in parallel between the main-planes. The engine mounted centrally behind the pilot, driving the rear-mounted propeller via a long shaft to clear the main flying surfaces. Well fabricated of wood, brass and metal construction, with cotton-thread simulating rigging wires, cream-painted flying surfaces, with black open frame fuselage and silver gravity fuel tank etc, this model represented a sturdy airframe structure with practical application for scaling up to a full-size machine capable of flight, wingspan 12 in, length 7.5in (30 x 19cm), the designer having graduated through engineering via railway and marine practical experience, now turned his attention to aeronautics, and this his first serious design, was subsequently built by Roe in a small rented shed at the newly opened Brooklands Motor Circuit, with its flying field within the central curtilage of the track. The prototype was his first successful aeroplane in a long series of now-venerated machines, produced subsequently by his enlarged enterprise at the Manchester factory where he ultimately relocated. The following year by June 1908, Verdon-Roe had built his first aeroplane to the model-pattern and flew it for a short duration - the first true Englishman to design and build his own heavier-than-air powered machine. A full-size flying replica of this aeroplane was specially re-created to celebrate its centenary in his memory, and is now on display at the RAF Museum at Duxford - a testament indeed to this genius, who laid the foundations of the British Aircraft Industry. The model is contained in his original wooden transit-box, ailerons lacking, and showing some age wear and deterioration to cotton rigging wires. (1)

*Vanity Fair cartoon. Mrs George Cornwallis-West [20th November 1912], colour lithograph of Mrs Cornwallis-West by ‘K’, slight mount staining, light marginal finger soiling, 360 x 215mm. One of the most beautiful and inteligent woman to grace society. At the time of this portrait her second marriage to George Cornwallis-West was staggering towards divorce. Perhaps that is why this portrait shows a melancholy beauty as well as her fiery personality, grace and courage. Both she and ‘Vanity Fair’ were getting old by the time this picture was painted, but her ambition, stamina and energy where used to enormous effect in shaping the man who was to become one of the greatest of ‘Great Britains’, her son, Winston Churchill. Walton opened his first showroom at 152 Wellington Street Glasgow in 1888, naming it `George Walton & Co, Ecclesiastical and House Decorators`. In 1897 Walton followed his brother Edward to London where he set up house and studio at 16 Westbourne Park Road, Bayswater, and in 1898 a showroom was opened in York. In the following year a four-storey block of workshops was built in Buccleuch Street, Glasgow, and it was in the same year that Robert Dick became a director of the Glasgow company, rising to chairman by 1905. In her 1993 biography of Walton Karen Moon comments " . . . in the north the company`s directors were keeping them busy: when the two brothers James and Robert Dick, who had been involved in the company since 1899, both married in the early years of the new century, their houses were done out grandly in company style". This press would have stood in one of the bedrooms or upper landings of the house and it retains its original net hangings for the windows and linen covers inside for the drawer slides.

The Alex `Hurricane` Higgins collection; from his long term friend and driver Charlie Cooke-comprising his famous trademark Fedora hat from his 1982 World Title winning era, a converting walking stick/snooker cue, a signed and inscribed book entitled `The Hurricane The Turbulent Life And Times Of Alex Higgins` by Bill Borrows, that was a gift to Charlie Cooke`s late mother and reads as follows `To Irene love and best wishes lovely Sunday lunch enjoy your dancing all the best Alex Hurricane Higgins`, which Alex gave to Charlie`s mum Irene after a particularly enjoyable Sunday lunch at her house, a photograph of Alex Higgins towards the end of his life with Charlie and four other friends in a Manchester pub, an order of service for Alex Higgin`s funeral that Charlie attended, together with a letter of provenance from Charlie Cooke relating to the items within this collection, which reads as follows "From 1975 until the year 2010 when Alex passed away, I was one of his true friends. Throughout the 80`s I drove Alex to many tournaments, including his World Title win at the Crucible in 1982, looking after his every need. The Fedora that Alex mostly wore during this period was given to me by Alex just after his famous victory. Sadly the satin lining was ruined by the sugared sweets that Alex sometimes kept in the hat for his young daughter Lauren. "Here you can have it Charlie, I`ll get another" he said to me. The very same hat was loaned by me to Mick Moody the base guitarist of Whitesnake, who wore it during their reunion tour of Europe in the 80`s. The walking stick that converts into a snooker cue was given to Alex in Dublin. On the way back to Manchester we stopped off at a snooker hall where Alex racked up a 100 break with it. He gave it to me a year, or so later. The photograph of me with Alex and a few friends (I`m the one on the far left with my arm raised) was taken in a pub in Gorton about three years ago. The signed book was given to my late mother for cooking him a lovely Sunday lunch. "The last time I saw Alex was early on in 2010. Not long after that I received a phone call from his sister asking me if I would attend his forthcoming funeral. Which, with great sadness, I did". Signed Charles E Cooke (Charlie) (illustrated)
