A FINE AND RARE PAIR OF 16-BORE IRISH SILVER MOUNTED FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS BY TWIGG & BASS TO THE 1ST REGIMENT OF HORSE OR 4TH ROYAL IRISH DRAGOON GUARDS, 10.5inch sighted two-stage blued barrels, the octagonal breech transitioning to hexadecagon and profusely inlaid in gold with key-form, geometric designs and poincons, P.S over TB over VA and a second with a diamond form over BA, suggestive of the maker Pedro Esteva in Barcelona, border engraved stepped locks signed TWIGG & BASS, full stocked with Irish hallmarked silver mounts for Dublin, to include long eared butt caps with grotesque mask butt caps, border engraved trigger guards, Continental style stepped sideplates engraved 1st REGT HORSE within a scroll set within a foliate spray, the back of the wrist set with a large crowned Prince of Wales feathers flanked by the motto ICH DIEN, polished steel topped wooden ramrods. A fine pair of pistols retaining good amounts of original finish throughout, rubbing to hallmarks with maker's mark PW. The transition of the 1st Regiment of Horse to the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards occurred in 1788. John Fox Twigg and John Bass formulated their partnership in 1788 and lasted until Twigg's death in 1790. It has been suggested that these pistols were made to mark the transition to the 4th Royal Irish for the Colonel of the regiment George Ward who ultimately became Commander in Chief, Ireland. For a pair of pistols with identical looking barrels, see the silver mounted examples by Henry Hadley in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2018.856.13a/c. It was involved in teacher training for men and women, the building of schools and the establishment of an inspectorate. From 1815 onwards, the Society received substantial government grant aid. An important part of its mission was the publication of greatly improved publications for the poor, who?s only previous experience of printed matter was the chap book. She attained a degree in Geography at Glasgow University and went on to train as a teacher. Iain Macnab had been Principal at Heatherley's Art School (1925 - 1940) and then went on to be founding Principal of the hugely influential Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Sheila's London influences and Glasgow School foundations evolved into a distinctive and individual style. She usually worked "en plein air" and her work is semi abstract. She focused mainly on landscape where her training as a geographer, allowed her to use her understanding of land formation, the delicate balance of the seasons and the interaction between Man and the environment. Her uncle's concept of "rhythm" is evident in Sheila's work and remained a constant throughout her career. She painted in Scotland, Spain. France and Italy and exhibited widely especially in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle. Her work appeared frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute annual exhibitions and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London). She won numerous awards and prizes over a long and distinguished career. The property boasts a heated swimming pool, two tennis courts and an 18 hole golf course. The press and media also reported that The Tower of Lethendy was acquired by the current owner in 2016.Note 2: Julian Barrow was a painter, adept at catching the spirit of a place, who travelled widely. He was born in Longtown, Cumberland, and studied at RWA and Signorina Simi’s Academy in Florence, Italy. He was a full member of Chelsea Arts Club, living nearby, and from 1988 for 23 years was President of Chelsea Art Society. Group shows included RA Summer Exhibition, 1961–99; Paris Salon, 1965; and NEAC, 2002. He had solo exhibitions at Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox 1972–74–77; Morton Morris & Co, 1982–85; Leger Gallery, 1989–92–95; and Fine Art Society 1999–05, plus many others in America and the Middle East. For decades he lived, with his wife Serena, in a magnificent studio on Tite Street in Chelsea (London) in the building formerly occupied at various times by Sargent, Whistler, Glyn Philpot and Augustus John. Julian Barrow was described by James Lees-Milne as “a country house painter par excellence” and his commissions for interiors and exteriors of country estates took him all over England, Scotland, Ireland, and America. He also painted many of the private clubs in London and New York. John Julius Norwich, in his introduction to the catalogue of a one-man show at the Fine Art Society in London in 2005, notes that Barrow’s pictures “radiate a love of life, a joy in light and shade and colour, a grateful appreciation of all the blessedness that lies around us if we can only make the effort to see it. They warm us; they cheer us; they convince us that whatever terrible things happen in the world, there is a beauty there a-plenty for the asking – and for the taking.” Barrow was commissioned to paint "Her Majesty the Queen Addressing Both Houses of Parliament on the Occasion of Her Golden Jubilee in Westminster Hall" (2002) having previously been commissioned to paint "HM The Queen in Westminster Hall Receiving the Jubilee Address on the 25th Anniversary of Her Accession to The Throne" (1977). Both held in the UK Parliament Art Collection. Julian Barrow's paintings are held in large numbers of prestigious private, corporate and public collections in the UK, US, Middle East, India and the Far East.Condition is good overall, with no visible signs of restoration, damage, or known issues. Additional images have been uploaded to our website.
* PAM CARTER DA PAI (SCOTTISH 1952 - 2022),GABLES, GEARY (ISLE OF SKYE)oil on canvas, signed, titled label versoimage size 77cm x 77cm, overall size 97cm x 97cm Framed.Label verso: The Braemar Gallery, Braemar.(The typical gallery price for a 77 x 77cm Pam Carter oil would be a little over £6000) Note 1: It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Pam Carter in May after an illness which she wrote about to her database of buyers on 24th June 2021: "I feel at last I am retiring somewhat due to ill health. I am not painting very much these days as I am struggling with the daily regime of chemo tablets; it’s hard getting the balance of effective medication and quality of life". Note 2: Pam Carter was born in Tanganyika, East Africa to an Austrian mother and Scottish father. At the age of thirteen, she came to Scotland where she schooled at Bearsden Academy. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in the seventies. "My main inspiration as an artist is in the Scottish landscape and seascape. I enjoy using colour to define contours, structure and changing light sequences. I search out specific viewpoints. I am equally inspired by the rugged isolation of the Western Isles and the dramatic viewpoints of the Eastern coastline. I work predominantly in oil". Pam Carter was unquestionably one of Scotland's most popular and successful contemporary artists. She won numerous awards and prizes, always received significant media attention, has been the subject of many magazine features and had several tv appearances. Her work is widely exhibited but rarely appears at auction. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 17th April 2022 lot 38 "Luskentyre Reflections" a 46 x 51cm oil (smaller than half the size of "Gables Geary") by Pam Carter sold for £2000 (hammer). Comment: Pam was a special artist and one who enjoyed wide popularity and substantial commercial success. In all our dealings with Pam over the years, she was always generous with her time and quick to provide the background to paintings we had received from private consignors and filling in gaps about locations, dates etc. Pam's work is instantly recognisable and she had that rare gift, even among the best artists, of being able to use the minimum of brushwork to create the maximum visual effect. Her "lines" were those of the natural environment but she knew exactly how to "see" them and portray them on canvas. Despite her commercial success, or perhaps even because of it, Pam's work probably hasn't yet reached the full audience that it so richly deserves. She exhibited frequently at numerous galleries in Scotland and gallery owners were inevitably in a queue to secure her work. Typically, Pam showed loyalty to those who were the first to support her when she was a relative unknown. Talented artists always wish to be remembered by their work and Pam Carter can be certain of that, but she'll also be remembered with great affection by all those who had the good fortune to meet her or know her.Condition is good overall, with no visible signs of restoration, damage, or known issues.

Schooled at Ayr Grammar & Ayr Academy, much of his youth was spent with the fisherfolk of West Scotland and their boats and he still cruises these waters each year. His work reflects their influences and those of the Scottish colourists who like him, spent much time in the wonderful light and colours of the West Coast. Painting in this tradition, he works with oils on canvas, using both brush and knife. In 1985, after many years in banking, he returned to Art & Design when he established an interior design company in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. He continued to work in oils, mainly commissions for corporate and private clients, but it was not until 1999, when the company was sold, that more time became available for painting. His work is successfully shown in many galleries in England, Scotland and abroad, most recently in Istanbul, where he was invited, as a result of commission work, to have a solo exhibition at the British Embassy, and a subsequent solo at one of the premier galleries in the city. Illustrated on page 110 of the book 'Hannah Frank, A Glasgow Artist: Drawings & Sculptures'. "Girl at the Window" was published as one of Hannah Frank's highly desirable signed lithographs.Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960s and again in the 1980s to satisfy the demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).

There has been much written about Paton's work from the 1980/90s explaining the meticulous detail and the many months it took to complete a single picture. Paton eventually moved on to a more spontaneous abstract style of work and consequently her earlier paintings are a distinct isolated body of work and the examples from this time are few and rarely, if ever, appear at auction. However, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on 16th August 2020 lot 591 Topping Out Day by Avril Paton was sold for a new auction record price of £8000 (hammer). Paton's early work from this period has been studied as part of the curriculum for many of the nation's youth and there are several talks and discussions on YouTube.

LAGAVULIN 12 YEAR OLD WHITE HORSESingle malt. The Islay distillery of Lagavulin first gained notoriety in 1862 when it was acquired by the well-known blender, John Logan Mackie. As with most distilleries, much of its life was spent producing blending stock, but in the late 1980s it began to appear as a single malt.Initially this single malt output was mostly sherry matured and so lightly peated as to be barely perceptible, placing Bunna’ firmly in the minority of Islay whiskies. However, since its takeover by Distell in 2013 around 20% of the spirit produced there is now heavily peated, with these expressions bearing the name “Moine” (the Gaelic word for peat).46.3% ABV / 70cl

GLENMORANGIE 10 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Famous for their unique stills, each as tall as an adult giraffe, and their passion for innovation, Glenmorangie remains one of the best-selling single malts in the world. They were one of the first distilleries to experiment with cask finishing; the process of transferring spirit from one cask type to another in order to impart additional characteristics and flavours. To further this agenda of innovation, in September of 2021 Glenmorangie began production at their new “Lighthouse” facility, a futuristic R&D department protruding from the heart of their traditional distillery complex like a monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Off limits to the public, it is home to a “sensory lab” as well as two of Glenmorangie’s signature stills, each of which plays host to several classified modifications. GLENFIDDICH 12 YEAR OLD SPECIAL RESERVESingle malt.Without Glenfiddich, Scotland might not enjoy the same thriving whisky scene it has today. Founded in 1886 by William Grant, and still family owned, Glenfiddich was one of the first distilleries to seriously market single malt whisky as a credible alternative to blends. This decision was prompted by a dispute with their grain supplier in 1963, leading to a scaling back in production of their Grant’s blend. By the late 1960s Glenfiddich single malt was a firm hit with the Jet Set, who were picking it up in their droves from the newly emerging Duty-Free market. That early prescience clearly paid off, as (despite strong competition from fellow Speyside giants Glenlivet and Macallan) Glenfiddich is consistently the best-selling single malt in the world, shifting over 1 million cases every year.40% ABV / 70clGLENMORANGIE 10 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Famous for their unique stills, each as tall as an adult giraffe, and their passion for innovation, Glenmorangie remains one of the best-selling single malts in the world.
