λ SIR ALFRED MUNNINGS (BRITISH 1878-1959) A DOUBLE SIDED SKETCH, STUDY FOR LORD IVOR CHURCHILL R. A. 1923; ON THE REVERSE A STUDY FOR PICTURE OF LORD IVOR CHURCHILL & THE 9TH DUKE OF MARLBOROUGHOil on panel Signed (lower left), inscribed and dated 1923 (upper left); the reverse signed and inscribed (upper right)29.5 x 40.5cm (11½ x 15¾ in.) Provenance:Acquired directly from the artist Sir Jack Jarvis, Private Collection Thence by descent to his daughter, Vivian, Private Collection Thence by descent, Private Collection, UKThence by descent to the present ownerThe present lot is a double-sided study by Sir Alfred Munnings for one of his most important commissions. It began one day whilst sat next to Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough in The Other Club, a political dining society that was founded in 1911. Churchill expressed his admiration for traditional composition in painting and how he much desired to commission a hunting picture of himself together with his son Lord Ivor Churchill on horseback and more specifically a grey horse as suggested by Lord Ivor. It was decided, and so both Charles Spencer-Churchill and Lord Ivor Churchill made way to Glebe Place in London to sit for Munnings in his studio.  'A signpost to Melton was the thing, we must have a signpost in it ! Changing horses, four greys, with the second horseman in full rig; what a subject ! Mind you put me on the best horse' the Duke exclaimed. The commission is described at length in the second volume of Munnings' memoirs.  The work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1924 in a review recorded in the Connoisseur it was commented 'More plaudits for the equestrian portrait of the Duke of Marlborough and Lord Ivor Spencer Churchill, but also for the muscular energy and movement of 'The Grey Horse'. The finished piece has remained in the Blenheim Palace collection ever since. This rare panel depicts three studies of Lord Ivor Churchill in his sumptuous hunting pinks and top hat. Munnings' swift, loose marks plan out the composition, experimenting with different positions of Churchill's head and hands upon the reigns. Sir Alfred Munnings has used very light, fast white strokes under the sitter to represent the horse. On the reverse of the panel the artist makes plans for the final composition which features Lord Ivor Churchill on grey horse in the far right corner, Charles Spencer-Churchill in the centre and two further greys with their handler to the left. The panel's chamfered edge suggests that Munnings was most likely using one of his slotted study boxes to work on the panel either in situ at Blenheim or back in his studio where both Lord Churchill and Charles Spencer-Churchill sat for Munnings.  A number of other studies for this commission are known to have been carried out by Sir Alfred Munnings, four of which came up for auction in 2006 at Christie's New York. However, it is believed that this double sided sketch, which has not been on the market before now, was purchased direct from Munnings by Sir Jack Jarvis, who was knighted for services to racing and was one of the country's leading trainers. The work was then passed through descent to the present owner.  We are grateful to the Curatorial staff at The Munnings Art Museum for their assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.

(illus. pl. 4)Literature:The Studio, Vol. 104, 1932, J. Newmark, The Artist on Tour, The Rose-Red City of Petra, Painted by David Bomberg, July to December, p. 103-108, p. 108 (illus.) Richard Cork, David Bomberg, (New Haven & London: Yale University Press), 1987, illus. p. 161, no. 200 Petra was uphill work, entailing much inconvenience, expense and the maximum of annoyance - there was scenery of an extraordinary nature to compensate us for the setbacks. Scorpions, snakes, and lizards, have found a happy home in Petra, and the blue lizard who basks in the sun on the rocks of Petra.- David Bomberg, recollections on Petra In 1923, Bomberg left London for Jerusalem. Organised by the artist Muirhead Bone and funded by the Palestine Foundation Fund, his brief was to record reconstruction projects in Palestine. Working en plein air he responded to the intensity of the heat and sun he encountered in Jerusalem by creating incredibly precise realistic works infused with a brilliance of light. It was here that he met the British Military Governor of Jerusalem, Sir Ronald Storrs. Storrs became an enthusiastic patron of Bomberg and it was he who funded and organised Bomberg's two expeditions to Petra in 1924. Accompanied by a military escort to protect him against thieves, Bomberg and his wife Alice embarked on this challenging expedition which took several weeks to reach the `Rose City'.  Working as always, en plein air, Bomberg initially struggled with the sheer scale and monumentality of this city, hewn from rock, feeling "like a tiny ant, labouring along the white riverbed, with all the egotism knocked out me". (Exhibition catalogue, David Bomberg: Spirit in the Mass, Abbot Hall Gallery, July - October 2006, p.82). However, returning for a second visit he overcame this initial hesitancy and went on to create paintings such as The Rock Façade, North-East Wall, Petra. The present work is one of his masterpieces from this extraordinary expedition and so it is unsurprising that Charles Aitkens, director of the National Gallery, Millbank, accepted the work on loan from the collector James Estens in 1929. In fact Bomberg himself wrote to Aitkens on 23rd October 1929 from Toledo referring to this painting; "By this time I think the painting is at the Tate. I know you have a personal liking for the painting after all. It was a stupendous task to set to Petra, from the start, under the [?] and wildest conditions imaginable to do a hugely finished work. In this respect the picture is unique - it has never been attempted before and it is not likely to be tried again by any other artist" In the present work Bomberg has managed to masterfully combine the sweeping monumentality of the landscape with the considered detail of the architectural construction. He ineffably transports the onlooker to this magical corner of Jordan through the freshness and immediacy of the paint surface. We involuntarily squint, shielding our eyes from the morning light, taking in the huge, sheer rock face in front of us and out of this red façade the holly temples and dwellings emerge. As they were carved out of the rock, so Bomberg carves them from his canvas through each painstaking brush stroke. All the more extraordinary when one is reminded that this work was not painted in the comfort of his studio, worked up from preliminary studies, but executed in the dusty, rocky, ancient and majestic landscape of Jordan.Condition Report: The canvas has not been relined. Light surface dirt throughout. There is a small area of craquelure lower centre. Scattered craquelure to the centre portion of the sky. Inspection under UV reveals no evidence of restoration or repair. Overall in good original condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Urwick, T.M. Joy, J. Churchill, and George Fisher. One of the earliest amateur photographers, Benjamin Brecknell Turner - a chandler by trade - began experimenting with the medium barely ten years after its invention, making an important contribution to its rapid development. He took out a licence in 1849 to practise Fox Talbot's patented photographic process, and soon began exhibiting widely. In 1852 he showed six photographs of the interior of Crystal Palace at the first exhibition devoted solely to photography, held by the Royal Society of Arts in London, and in 1855 he won a bronze medal whilst exhibiting at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. The following year the Photographic Society of London was formed, Turner one of the founding members. He is best-known for his evocative scenes of rural life, typically photographing picturesque, quintessentially English scenes, such as ruined abbeys and castles, thatched barns and farm implements, half-timbered houses, crumbling cottages, ancient oak trees and woodland paths. The V&A holds an album of his works, entitled Photographic Views from Nature, containing some of the earliest photographs of rural England as well as images of the Crystal Palace. The album - in a binding not dissimilar to ours - was assembled by Turner in the mid 1850s, and purchased by the V&A from his descendents in 1982.

* Burne-Jones (Edward Coley, 1833-1898). Study of a female nude for Pygmalion - The Godhead Fires, mid 1860s, pencil on paper, depicting a full-length female nude half-profile to left, with left leg bent and arms outstretched, her long hair flowing out behind her, toned, sheet size 29.4 x 22 cm (11 5/8 x 8 5/8 ins), mounted (41 x 31.5 cm)QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: The artist's studio; his daughter Margaret Mackail; Christie's, London, 3rd December, 1954; purchased by a private collector; thence by descent. This female nude study was executed in preparation for one of Burne-Jones’s most celebrated series of paintings, Pygmalion and Galatea, of which he created two versions. Both depicted, in four large-scale works, the story - first told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses and later retold by William Morris in The Earthly Paradise - of the creation of a perfect woman by a Greek sculptor who falls in love with his statue which is brought to life by Aphrodite. This study, for the third painting in the series, 'The Godhead Fires', depicts Galatea at the crucial moment she is brought to life. The first series (Collection of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber) was completed in 1870, and the second series (Birmingham City Art Gallery) was completed in 1878 and exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery the following year. The style of this drawing suggests that it probably relates to the earlier series, as does the disposition of the left leg, which in both finished versions takes the weight of the body, unlike here where it is bent.

Ltd.; transferred to Zurich financial services.Patricia Reed, William Nicholson Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings, 382 (illustrated).Sir Edward Mortimer Mountain (1872-1948), underwriter and Insurance company manager, played a pivotal role in the history of the insurance industry through the foundation of Eagle Star, an amalgamation of three life-assurance offices, which was the first company to allow 'all-in' comprehensive policy for householders in 1916. The minutes of a meeting of the company's Board on 6 December 1917 state: 'it was carried unanimously that as a mark of appreciation for the special services rendered by Mr Mountian in bringing about the amalgamation of the Eagle, Star, Sceptre and other Companies with this Company, the sum of 500 guineas be set aside for the purchase of a portrait of Mr Mountain to be presented to him, and further, that a copy of same be made for the use of the Company.' (Patricia Reed, William Nicholson Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings, Modern Art Press/Yale University Press, 2011, p324).Mountain was knighted in the New Year's Honours List of 1918 and on 18 February of that year, WN wrote to his son: 'I am painting a knight who looks like a postboy: makes £30,000 a year out of insurance - very psychic - owns all of Lorna Doone Country' (TGA 8717/1/1652). This was a reference to Mountain's country house, Orr Manor in Somerset. WN had earlier described the sitter as 'a new knight', having the 'face of an ostler' (TGA 8717/1/1/1651). Only one portrait of Mountain by WN is known, and it seems likely that the sitter, who had a large art collection, decided to present the original portrait to the company. Described as 'a small man with great authority and exuberance', he was created a baronet in 1922 (ODNB).Mountain's wartime reputation had been enhanced by his refusal to insure the RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage in 1912.

Police Photograph Book, St. Mary's Gate, Derby, 1890-1920, approximately 500 pages of individual criminal profiles with accompanying photographs and manuscript details of offences committed & sentences given. The book records the convictions of Alice Wheeldon and her family members for the conspiracy to murder Prime Minister David Lloyd George, something which is still being debated to this day. Alice Wheeldon was a supporter of women's suffrage and an anti-war campaigner who sheltered young men fleeing conscription; it's believed she was set up in an effort to disgrace the anti-war movement. Other convictions in the book are wide-ranging. Many of the women have previous convictions for prostitution, and many of the men have been charged for living on the earnings of prostitution. In some instances, a husband and wife have each been convicted for causing their children to beg. A few of the men are dressed in army uniforms, and many individuals are described as having naval tattoos, hinting at the scale of conscription during WW1. Identifying marks are described, and most have physical scars. Some convictions seem shockingly petty, such as 'stealing a tin of pine apple', 'stealing a bag of soot', 'stealing growing apples', and some are bizarrely vague, like the conviction for being an 'incorrigible rogue'. Folio, original worn cloth, some handling marks from useProvenance: The vendor states, "The book was rescued by my father, a police officer at the time, when he was working for Derby Borough Police more than 40 years ago. The station was clearing out some garages and store rooms at an old police station on St Mary's Gate in Derby. My father rescued it from being thrown into the skip. He thought it was too interesting to end up in landfill."

Repton School & Roald Dahl Interest. An archive of books given as gifts to Sergeant W. A. Moughton, the second School Marshall at Repton, with gift inscriptions from grateful former pupils, including Roald Dahl, who has inscribed a copy of Broome Stages by Clemence Dane, 'To Sergeant Moughton, the man who never refuses to help, from Roald Dahl, 31/7/34.' It's clear that Moughton was well-liked, with messages such as this one from R. C. Evans, July 1928, 'In acknowledgement of innumerable services which he has rendered me during the last five years.' Or this one from W. P. M. Ross, Xmas 1933, 'In gratitude for many a good laugh, and much good advice'. Each book is inscribed by a thankful pupil, and in some cases several boys have evidently pitched together for a book and all signed it. Moughton obviously followed the careers of the students, and in some cases has noted down what they went on to do in later life, for instance Roger Allen, 'Now Sir Roger Allen, British Ambassador to Greece 1957/61, British Ambassador Iraq 1961.' He has also made notes beneath those killed in military service. Mixed subjects, mostly popular classics and useful reference, including a presentation copy of The Dickens World, by Humphry House, with loosely-inserted letter from the author. Condition generally good but varied, collection sold as found with all faults. Full list available on request (58)Provenance: Vendor's late father cleared the contents of a flat in Repton that formerly belonged to Moughton's sister, Lena, who had left the books with no next of kin. The vendor fondly remembers her father treasuring the collection in a bookcase in his office when she was a little girl
