A Japanese Okidoko low chest, circa 1970s, and contents including vase, wall hanging scrolls etc, formerly belonging to Friedrich August von Hayek (1899-1992), the Austrian-British academic, economist, political philosopher, intellectual and joint 1974 Nobel Prize winner, bequeathed by Hayek's family to Charlotte E. Cubitt, Hayek's longtime final secretary in Freiburg, Germany, 1977-1992, author of 'A Life of Friedrich August von Hayek', 2006, her memoir of Hayek from the fifteen years she spent as his secretary. The history of the Okidoko chest detailed p.8/9 of Cubitt's 2006 memoir of Hayek "While he was away [Hayek, in Guetemala, 1977] a strangely named consignment had arrived at the Stuttgart customs office from Japan, described in the freight documents as an Okidoko. I discovered it was something in the order of a chest, the nature and history of which Hayek explained in his next letter. Fifty years ago, he told me, when he was still living in Vienna, he had coached a Japanese business man, a Mr. Araki, in economics, but had also taught his beautiful young wife to waltz. After Mrs. Araki had been widowed she had become a very successful interior decorator in Tokyo. When recently he had told her that he proposed having a corner shrine, a Tokonoma, built, so that he could adequately display a beautiful lacquer table and vase he had been given, she offered to send him the proper materials for it if he gave her the measurements of the space where he planned to put it. He sent them, but as time passed he forgot about the matter...The delay proved to be fortunate, for Mrs. Araki had meanwhile instructed one of her craftsmen to build the Okidoko and had it air-shipped to Germany. Hayek said he was deeply embarrassed about the costs involved, irrespective of whether he or Mrs. Araki would have to pay for them...As it so happened, Mrs. Araki had paid for the freight charges in advance, so...he had to spend only another DM500 on what was, according to the purveyors, worth ¥70,850. After his return, he placed the Okidoko, the little table, and the vase in the place he had selected for it...where I passed and admired it every time I was in the Hayek's apartment. Some months after Mrs. Hayek's death in 1996, his daughter Christine, whom I had warned to look out for it when she and her brother were clearing the flat, brought it to England and bequeathed it to me!"Provenance: From the estate of Charlotte E. Cubitt, F.A. Hayek's secretary 1977-1992. Friedrich August von Hayek (1899-1992), often referred to by his initials F. A. Hayek, was an Austrian-British academic, who contributed to economics, political philosophy, psychology, and intellectual history. Hayek shared the 1974 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Gunnar Myrdal for work on money and economic fluctuations, and the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena. His account of how prices communicate information is widely regarded as one of the most important contributions to economics, and led to him receiving the prize. As the co-founder of the Mont Pelerin Society he contributed to the revival of classical liberalism in the post-war era. Hayek had a long-standing and close friendship with philosopher of science Karl Popper, who was also from Vienna. Hayek's influences/contemporaries, amongst others, include the intellectual heavyweights J.S. Mill, Ludwig Wittgenstein (his second cousin), Karl Popper, Carl Menger, Friedrich Nietzsche, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich von Wieser, Milton Friedman and John Maynard Keynes. Margaret Thatcher, a fierce advocate of free-market libertarianism, was greatly influenced by Hayek's writing - there is a famous anecdote that during a Conservative Party policy meeting, Thatcher removed her copy of Hayek’s Constitution of Liberty from her handbag, slammed it down on the table and declared, “This is what we believe.” Hayek's most notable work, 'The Road to Serfdom' has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and is considered on of the most important books of the 20th century.

(Early golf) Thomas Mathison The Goff. An Heroi-Comical Poem. In three Cantos...With an appendix, Containing Two Poems in Praise of Goff, and a Few Notes and Illustrations Third edition, though described as the second on the title page, it was enlarged by a dedication 'To all the lovers of Goff in Europe, Asia, Africa and America', and by two short poems, later blue half calf rubbed to extremities, marbled endpapers with the ex libris label for Samuel Chick (a copy of William Faques the first printer to the king, 1504) and booksellers label for Henry Sotheran & Co to front pastedown, some light staining to the head of the title page, pp.32 runs true, pp.22, 23 and 25 previously dog eared, a very good copy, scarce, Printed for Peter Hill, Edinburgh, 1793.One of the cornerstones of golfing literature, the third edition of the first printed book devoted entirely to golf, is Thomas Mathison's "The Goff." Born in Edinburgh in 1721 and trained as a legal writer, Mathison first published this work in 1743. The poem humorously depicts a game of golf played on Leith Links and provides significant insights into how golf was played at that time, including details on the equipment used and the layout of the course. It also mentions prominent golfers of the era, referred to as the 'Caledonian Chiefs,' who were regulars at Leith Links. These players, drawn from Edinburgh's professional elite, were the founding members of the first golf club, the Company of Gentlemen Golfers.Peter Hill, the publisher, typically printed in the hundreds rather than thousands. This scarce volume, with WorldCat listing only seven editions in eleven libraries worldwide and none in the British Library, is in remarkable condition. The slightly later binding, bearing the label of the esteemed Henry Sotheran & Co booksellers, further attests to its distinguished provenance. The identity of Samuel Chick, as noted on the ex libris label, remains a mystery. An important work, rarely sold on the open market.

A Victorian horse drawn Bowman carriage, original upholstery, brass hubs marked KEITES & SONS, 183cm long overall, c.1850The Brougham was a light, four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage popular during the nineteenth century and named after the politician and jurist Lord Brougham, who had a carriage built to his particular specifications by London coachbuilder Robinson & Cook in about 1838. The vehicle was to be enclosed, able to seat two passengers in luxury, with occasional seats for two more, plus a driver and a groom. It also had to be light and require just a single horse and have a full cut-under fore carriage to allow it to turn in its own length in the narrow streets of London’s business district. The design quickly became popular and was copied in Paris and in New York by bespoke coachbuilders. Variations included an extension-front Brougham, which had four full seats inside a longer body, square-front Broughams referencing the shape, and the bow-front Brougham***This lot is contained at a property in Kegworth, North West Leicestershire (approximately 12 miles from the saleroom) and is to be sold in situ. Viewing can be arranged by appointment with the auctioneers, and successful bidders will have until Wednesday 14th August to remove. Payment and collection MUST be made by this date.

In 1904, Simpson attended Clifton College, Bristol, and in 1908 he went to Trinity College, Cambridge (his father’s college) and read Botany and Zoology graduating BA with a third in Natural Sciences Tripos in 1911. By repute previously part of the Hart-Hall Collection. William Hart was a Christchurch taxidermist who became interested in natural history as a boy and passed on his skills, and later his business 'William Hart & Son, Preservers of Birds and Beasts', to his son, Edward. Edward Hart built a large collection of mounted birds, which he initially exhibited in his own small museum. Hart's Museum received many visitors, including Sir Robert and Lady Baden-Powell in March 1914. The building was described as 'warm, well-lit and very clean, the ideal of a private museum, every part of which is crowded with rare and beautiful birds.' A chart drawn up by Edward Hart for Bournemouth Corporation gave some indication of the space taken up by the cases. The total length of the bird cases was 270 feet (82 metres) with a height of 10 feet (3 metres). In addition the mammal cases extended another 30 feet (9 metres). By 1903, Hart sought an established museum to purchase the collection in order to maintain and exhibit it in perpetuity; however, no buyers came forward. In 1924, the collection was sold to John Hall, an industrialist and keen ornithologist who displayed it in a purpose built gallery in his home, Broughton Hall in Staffordshirecrack to rear glass panel top left corner

In July of 1910, ex American president Theodore Roosevelt whilst visiting London made a special trip to the Zoo to see the newly arrived Tasmanian Tiger. After four and a half years in captivity the unfortunate creature became very ill and was humanely euthanized on the 20th of November 1914. Because of the poor condition of the animal, and that it had a deformed front leg due to being trapped as a juvenile, only the skull was retained. It was prepared and preserved by Edward Gerrard of Camden Town, London, sadly the last captive held Thylacine died and became extinct in the 1936 at Hobart Zoo, Tasmania

Soon after the family moved to various residences in rural England eventually buying Warren House, Bodfari, Flintshire (Hywel). Following his exploits as a pioneering aviator and racing driver his flying experience was put to good use. During the First World War he represented the British Government as an Admiralty Test Pilot at the Curtiss Aviation Company, Buffalo, U.S.A. An accident in January 1918 precluded further aviation activities and soon after he involved himself in the field of ornithology and oology. Quite early on he took up residence in Rhyl, at Holmfield, 21 West Kimmel Street where Mrs E.M. Parry (first names unknown to me) became his housekeeper, the start of a relationship which lasted for the rest of his life. By about 1928 the months of April to September- the bird breeding season-were devoted to bird watching visiting many of the Welsh islands such as Puffin, The Skerries, Bardsey, and Grassholm in one of his boats. He rented Puffin Island and studied the seabirds. Published a paper in The Oologists’ Record of 1st June 1929 about his observations on this island. His wealth came from the family Brewing interests in Grimsby of which he had no interest whatsoever. There was a Hewitt Trust which was set up by his grandfather. The terms of the trust were that only a male could inherit. When the brewery and other property was sold about 1933 Vivian Hewitt being the sole heir was the recipient of a vast fortune in the order of one and a quarter million pounds, so his already large income was swelled to the tune of some £50,000 a year from that source (Hywel). With his wealth Vivian could buy virtually anything which took his fancy. He became a very valued customer of Spink and Son of London who sold him rare stamps, gold coins and valuable objects d’art. They were to become an important conduit for the sale of Great Auk eggs and specimens. In the early 1960’s he became a tax exile and lived for much of the year at his house Mount Vernon, Nassau, Bahamas with Mrs Parry and appears to have abandoned his vast collection of eggs, some say half a million others a million, at his Anglesey property of Bryn Aber, Cemlyn under the control of Jack Parry. It was not until he was nearly seventy when he chose Nassau as his permanent home. Many of his personal and most prized possessions had been shipped out, and he continued to occupy many hours of the day dealing with his stamp and coin collections and even adding to them. Naturally, some of his engineering acquisitions proved too troublesome for transit and his collection of birds’ skins and eggs were too vast to move. However, the mounted specimens of Great Auks, as well as the eggs were too precious not to be under his surveillance and were constantly admired and studied. Hewitt died in a friend’s house at Cemlyn, Anglesey on the 18thJuly 1965. He had been in failing health in Nassau for some considerable time having been diagnosed with a carcinoma of the oesophagus and returned to Wales for treatment in Liverpool a short time before he died. East's headquarters were at Suzanne, at this time a fire-swept, noisy, shell-stricken village, but it suited a man of his temperament, and on promotion to Brigadier-General to command Heavy Artillery of the XIIIth Corps, on April 3rd 1916, it was with difficulty he was induced to move to a somewhat less 'unhealthy' neighbourhood. In the latter capacity he took part in the Battle of the Somme. When, as the battle progressed and fronts we readjusted, the French extended their line somewhat to the northwards, East accompanied his Corps to its new position on the left of the Fifth Army, and while there took part in the operations to the north of the Ancre Valley. In April 1917, he was appointed GOC RA XIIIth Corps, which appointment he only held for a short time owing to ill-health. On being reported fit for duty again he resumed his old command as GOC Heavy Artillery of the XIIIth Corps, which position he held until killed in action on September 6th 1918, having taken part in all operations in which his Corps was engaged up to that date. East possessed a physique far beyond the average and was one of those few men who may be justly described as being entirely without fear. he was of a 'thrusting' fighting temperament, and his governing principle in the employment of his guns in battle was to place them as far forward as possible; this principle he invariably put into practice, and with success. He possessed the faculty of inspiring those under him with his own fighting spirit, and this coupled with a kindly consideration for his subordinates in all circumstances and an intense loyalty towards his superiors, made him a type of artillery commander which which the Regiment may well be proud of.'
