He gave Laurel and Postmaster 7lbs. each each for a sweepstake of a thousand guineas over the Beacon Course at Newmarket. The portrait is of Price, who trained him.'Sharke was bred and owned by Robert Pigott (1736-94) of Chesterton Hall, in Huntingdonshire. Pigot was a sympathiser with the American and French revolutions and an aquaintance of Franklin, Voltaire and Brissot. He is said to have later become 'a zealous Pythagorean, as a vegetarian was than called, and was a dupe of the quack James Graham and his electric bed' (DNB)Sharke's racing winnings at Newmarket alone totalled over 16000 guineas. The highest sum to that date for any racehorse. He commenced as a stallion at Chesterton Hall in 1779. Later he was sold at Tattersall's to a dealer and exported to Virginia. His first season in America was spent at General Spottiswood's stud at Nottingham near Fredericksburg. His period at stud proved a success and he was later described by a correspondent as doing 'as much to enhance the value of the bloodstock of the United States as any horse ever imported' (American Turf Register, 1830, vol V, p173)

Allan, Esq Thence by family descentDaryl Lindsay, prior to the Great War, had worked as a Jackaroo near Calbreni, New South Wales. On the outbreak of war in 1914 he (as did Victor Allan) enlisted in the Australian Army Service Corps. Later Lindsay worked as a driver in the Australian Army Service Corps in France serving there for almost 2 years. During that time he was encouraged to make drawings of life in the trenches. Allan clearly knew him well at this period, making references to him in his own war time diaries. (Australian Govt. Collection). In 1918 Lindsay was posted to Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, Kent, as a specialist medical artist for the Australian Army. Here he met Henry Tonks who arranged for him to receive further training at the Slade School, London. Lindsay returned to Melbourne in 1919.Later in life Lindsay became Curator of the National Gallery of Victoria, rising to be Director from 1942-1956. He was knighted in 1965 for 'services to art'.

Dibbin (Railway Engineers) large rolled manuscript map mounted on linen, with a fair bit of wear, 880 x 650 mm, 1837.*Notes Thatcham Estate belonged to the daughter of the proprietor of the first Mail Coach, Edward Fromont, the family were involved in the mail coach business until the coming of the railways. The railway is indicated on the plan by the surveyor F. W, Dibbin, a family member, who worked with I. K. Brunel. The Kennet and Avon Canal runs to the south of the estate.

The same Boulanger is recorded as having assisted in the renovation of Claridge's between 1909-10, since the latter hotel wanted to rival the immense success of the Ritz at that time.This is very likely the same Marcel Boulanger who either retailed or perhaps originally purchased the present lot as he was also noted for collecting and purchasing French furniture on behalf of his wealthy and often illustrious clients. Sir David William Smith (1764-1837), 1st and only baronet. Born 4th September 1764 he was the only child of Colonel John Smith and Anne Waylen. Born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, Smith was educated under military tutors and was first a military officer, joining his father's regiment, the 5th Regiment of Foot (later the Northumberland Regiment) as an ensign in 1779. Married first Anne O'Reilly esq. of Ballykilchrist co. Longford in 1788 and after short leave he was posted to Detroit under his father's command in 1790. Kiang-Yen Esqre who is presumably a member of the Young China Party in his own country.  So much of this type of work is amateurish that proficient excellence is to be especially welcomed." A Caughley maskhead cabbage-leaf moulded jug dated 1790 named to 'Mr. Berridge', transfer-printed in underglaze blue with a view of the Iron Bridge, S mark, 19cm high Tentatively, 'Mr. Berridge' could be attributed to the famous evangelical revivalist preacher Rev. John Berridge. Commonly referred to 'Mr. Berridge' by friends and in contemporary literature, John was a close friend of the Hill family at Hawkstone who were known patrons of Caughley. Similar jugs of this shape and pattern are documented with inscriptions relating to the Hill family.

World War II interest: Fl. Sgt. Charlie H Wright, 1608844 Caterpillar Club pin with ruby eyes, membership card and RAF enamelled wings badgeNote: The Caterpillar Club was founded in 1922 and is an association for people who have successfully used a parachute to bale out of a disabled aircraft. The choice of the caterpillar honours the contribution of the silkworm to the parachute. The caterpillar has amethyst eyes unless the disabled plane is on fire as it goes down, in which case the pin has ruby eyes.Sergeant Charles H Wright?s Halifax Mk III bomber was shot down on 23rd June 1944 over Lautaule, Cuvilly, France. All seven airmen baled out, survived and attempted to escape. Sgt Wright and four others were on the run for some days, taking shelter in a farm building before being handed over to German soldiers. The other two avoided capture. He was taken to Paris and interrogated by the Gestapo before being transported to Stalag Luft III where he spent the rest of the war. Accompanying the lot is a photograph of the crash site, a copy of the French record of the crash, and a touching collection of poems written by Sgt Wright at the end of the war, and published when he died in 2019.

Although this style of floral decoration with green borders is widely associated with the Marchioness of Huntly who sold a dessert service in this pattern in 1882, there are certainly far too many tea and dessert wares for this ever solely have been the sole commission. Beatrix Potter (H.B. Heelis) a letter June 24th 1918, describing a journey through Bothel, Carlisle, Langholm and through The Cheviots. The letter written by Mrs Heelis to John Mackereth who was Beatrix Potter's first farm manager at the time. The Mackereth family lived at Hill Top as Beatrix had married and moved to a cottage nearby. The trip was to the funeral of Beatrix Potter's brother and she laments that "he could not die for his country in France since he was appointed to die, it seems a pity for a man to die in bed". The letter also describes the nature of the deceased illness and goes on to talk about the weather. The letter is sold with a photograph that we believe to be of John Mackereth and a copy of Margaret Lane's book "The Tale of Beatrix Potter, A Biography". There is also a letter of provenance from the recently deceased descendent of Mr John Mackereth. A postcard of a shearling tup, inked verso in the hand of Mrs Heelis detailing prizes awarded at Penrith, Keswick, Ennerdale and Gosforth is also included (see illustration).

A Staffordshire pottery figure of Mary Anne Talbot (John Taylor), modelled in her disguise as a man a rifle and dead game to her right a dog to her left, the painted face with moustache the remainder of the figure heightened with gilding height 35.5 cm. NOTE: Known as The British Amazon, after the death of her sister and her subsequent treatment by a severe guardian, she was introduced to Captain Essex Bowen who affected her seduction and in order to carry on the affair he compelled her to dress as a footboy and accompany him on journeys to Domingo and Flanders. she affected this pretence throughout the majority of her career and it was never disclosed even under the pain of having grape-shot and musket balls removed from her leg, nor her year and half imprisonment at Dunkirk.
