ARR Nigel Temple (1926-2003)Penny Red Isigned and dated upper left 27.7.94mixed media with collage18cm x 14cm Nigel Temple (1926-2003) was a highly accomplished artist, lecturer and writer who lived in Gloucestershire. He was a polymath whose interests spanned contemporary art, bookbinding, typography and architecture. The unique collection presented here, comprising his remaining studio works, conveys the full range of his intellectual and artistic interests. Temple exhibited internationally and counted important twentieth-century innovators such as Graham Sutherland amongst his friends and colleagues. While parallels may be drawn between his work and that of famous modernists such as Sutherland and John Piper, Temple nevertheless established a sophisticated and evocative style that was entirely his own. He was also a well-regarded architectural historian, writing numerous books on the architecture of John Nash and the vernacular buildings of his hometown of Farnham. While he worked across a range of different media, Temple largely specialised in an idiosyncratic form of collage that combined his twin passions of bookbinding and architecture. Temple generally used found materials, particularly discarded book bindings, to create artworks that are, at first glance, abstract and mysterious. Yet they gradually draw the viewer in with their witty titles and the evocatively distressed texture of their source materials. They often suggest personal memories and specific architectural sites, and are imbued with an uncanny sense of place. Chorley’s are delighted to bring Nigel Temple’s studio works to auction. Framed and glazed. The artwork is in very good condition, with minimal wear. Any visible distress to the artwork is a result of the original making process and the found materials involved.

A George III style silver presentation mug, Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd., London 1939, inscribed to Russell Meiggs from the Keble College JCR 1939, approximately 527g Russell Meiggs and thence by descent to the current owners. Russell Meiggs (1902-1989) was a British ancient historian conducting extensive research on the Roman port city of Ostia. Meiggs was Fellow and Tutor in Ancient History and Praefectus of Holywell Manor, 1945 – 1969Meiggs was additionally a friend of both C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien and was instrumental in encouraging the publication of The Hobbit. Tolkien doubted whether he should be writing such a book in his position as professor for Anglo-Saxon at Oxford. In a letter from Meiggs to Tolkien (now in the Bodleian Library) Meiggs writes“ This is an unsolicited testimonial with no ulterior motives. I have just got back with Baggins and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It is grand fun, and quite absorbing….so guttily written, if I may be vulgar, and so free from cotton wool…..it solves the Christmas problem for a large number of god-children and it will increase my prestige with my sister’s youngest who is a discriminating and insatiable public….Quite honestly I think it is jolly good, and I hope people will recognise it. Commercially it should be published at the beginning of the Christmas books and pushed to save children from the sentimental saccharine that is so often foisted on them…If I were Sales Manager I think I could sell it in a big way.”

Along with Charles Robert Ashbee, he was a founding member, in 1888, of the Guild and School of Handicraft at Whitechapel, London. However, due to taking on freelance work for William Morris in his spare time, Pearson was eventually dismissed from the Guild in 1892 and made his way to Newlyn, Cornwall, where he worked in the recently established industrial school. Greatly influenced by William De Morgan (1839-1917), it is believed that John spent some time working at De Morgan's workshop, decorating tiles and pottery and making associated metalwork, for example, tile mounts. The most notable examples of Pearson's work are the four large copper plaques - denoting earth, air, fire, and water - that decorate the façade of Newlyn Art Gallery.Condition ReportKnocks and wear. In Rex Whistler's "Clovelly" pattern with a central scene of Clovelly harbour and floral vignettes, with trophies of capstans and cannons and lobster pots and oars to the outside. Printed marks to the base with impressed "WEDGWOOD" mark.  The "Clovelly" pattern was first designed by Rex Whistler in 1932 for use as a toile de jouy fabric. It was commissioned by Christine Hamlyn Fane (1855-1936) the benefactor and owner of the Clovelly Estate, who was responsible for the preservation and upkeep of the historic and picturesque Devon fishing village. Christine Hamlyn (known to Rex Whistler as "Aunt Christine") also sat for a portrait by the artist at her home, Clovelly Court. Shortly after the toile de jouy fabric went into production the design was adapted by Wedgwood for use in a range of ceramic teawares.  Wedgwood's "Clovelly" pattern comes in five colourways: Black (as here); Blue; Red; Green and Sepia. In the earliest productions it is usually encountered in creamware ("Queensware") though, occasionally, bone china pieces can be found. In the later, post-war, issues it is generally found in stoneware.
