XII.1548), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. No. 32.75.111), the Musée Royal de l~Armée et d~Histoire, Brussels (inv. no. IX/6); the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no D271); the Kienbusch Collection, The Philadelphia Museum of Art (acc. No. 635) and the Musée Rath, Geneva (inv. no. K182). For an extensive list of known examples see Godoy, 1993, cat. No. 8, p. 27 and 143. Hans Paumgartner is recorded circa 1540-90 in Graz and worked at the court of Charles II, Archduke of Styria. Two highly decorated firearms by this maker are preserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. A2305) and the Art Institute of Chicago (acc. no. 1982.2266) respectively, the latter being made for Archduke Charles II. An apparently unsigned wheel-lock rifle in Vienna (inv. no. D272) is decorated with inlay of the same unusual design, notably the unicorn horns, monsters and foliage. See Schedelman 1972, pp. 8-9 and 24-25 and Karcheski Jr. 1995, p. 75. The barrelsmith is possibly Antonio Ferrari who, along with his brother Paolo, is mentioned as archibusari in the Brescian tax lists of 1588, 1590 and 1606. An alternative candidate is Antonio Carrara, a merchant who was entrusted, with Apollonio Chinell, in 1591 with the fontego of military barrels in Brescia and, in 1594, supplying guns to local troops in the Venetian region. Both attributions might be considered tenuous in light of the exuberant decoration of the barrel, perhaps the work of a specialist iron chiseller rather than a barrelsmith. See di Carpegna 1997, p. 44 and 116.

The former Saxon Electoral Armoury, now incorporated within the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, includes a wheel-lock rifle, two flintlock rifles, and three pairs of pistols by this maker. The design of the mounts is taken from earlier French pattern books including those of Simonin and Guérard. One likely candidate is Christopher Philipson (1646-1709), of Crook Hall, Member of Parliament for Westmoreland in 1679. Philipson served as a Royalist militia officer and assisted Daniel Fleming in breaking up a Quaker meeting at Windermere in 1675. He replaced Sir John Lowther III as the honourable member for Westmorland in the second Exclusion Parliament. For his efforts he was rewarded with a knighthood by Charles II in 1681 as ~a person of known loyalty and affection~, he was foreman of the grand jury which presented a loyal address after the Rye House Plot. John Cosens, said to have leant ~ye arte [of gunmaking] in ye City of Winchester~, was admitted to the Freedom of the Gunmakers~ Company on 14th August 1662. By 1664 he was in business and received payments from the Ordnance board for the manufacture and repair of matchlock and snaphaunce arms during the period 1666-80. In 1670 he took over Harman Barne~s shop in the Strand from his widow and he became Gunmaker in Ordinary to Charles II before 1669. The Wardrobe Account for 1680 shows that he delivered three pairs of pistols and one gun for £29 and in the same year he supplied pistols and one gun |stocked with asshe| for £8 as part of the King~s presents for the Emperor of Morocco. The last reference to him is on 4th August 1698 when he was fined ten shillings for proving a birding barrel belonging to John May who was not entitled to have barrels proved. He was then transferred to the British Army and fought in the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War, in which his exploits earned him widespread fame. A George IV Irish silver rounded rectangular toasted cheese dish by Stephen Bergin, Dublin 1821, with a screw-out turned wood handle to allow for filling with hot water, a rounded oval finial to the detachable shallow domed cover, a nulled rim, in four paw feet, engraved with a crest, 21.5cm (8 1/2in) wide, 1386g (44.55 oz) gross (lacking the short chain) The crest belongs to Henry BARRY (1770-1823), 8th Earl Barrymore. The BARRY family of Co. Cork were created Earls of Barrymore 1628, having been previously Viscount Barry (created 1541) and Baron Barry (created 1261) all in the Irish peerage. All titles became extinct in 1823 with the decease of the 8th Earl. Henry Barry (1770-1823), who had the unfortunate nickname 'Cripplegate', probably as a result the disfigurement that he suffered throughout his life, was the son of Richard Barry (1745-1773), the 6th Earl by Amelia Stanhope (1749-1780) the daughter of William Stanhope (1719-1799) 2nd Earl of Harrington. Henry Barry was never married and had inherited the title as a result of the accidental death of his elder brother Richard Barry (1769-1793), the 7th Earl, just one year after his marriage to Charlotte Goulding. The Barry family were not held in the highest esteem. Many of the male members of the family being considered to be womanisers and frequent gamblers and theatre goers and this may be the reason for their short lives. The last generation of the family were categorised by their unfortunate nicknames: sister Caroline as 'Billingsgate' as a result of her 'foul tongue'; youngest brother Augustus (1773-1818) as 'Newgate' as a result of his encounter with Newgate Prison. Perhaps the demise of their line was inevitable. Edwards was born in Birmingham in 1923, he served during WWII with 21 Platoon "D" Company, 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. On 10 October 1941 the 2nd Bn became part of the newly formed 1st Airlanding Brigade as part of the 1st Airborne Division. After completing training the embarked for North Africa and became part of the Attacking Force, under American control that planned to land on Sicily on 6 July 1943. The glider towing aircraft piloted by the Americans had no experience of night flying, so the Force became widespread and as they neared Sicily the enemy opened fire, which unnerved the Americans who released the gliders prematurely over the sea. Private Edwards glider ditched into the sea and he was rescued some hours later. Of the 48 Officers and 768 men of the 2nd Bn who set out in gliders only 19 Officers and 269 returned. On 7th September 1944 the 1st Airborne took part in Operation Market Garden with the American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. The Americans would drop around Eidoven and secure the roads near Nijemgen and the 1st Airborne would capture the Bridge at Arnhem (64 miles behind enemy lines). Once the bridges over the Rhine were secured the ground troops would have a pathway into Germany. The 2nd Bn South Staffordshire Regiment were engaged by the enemy almost as soon as the gliders landed and had nine casualties. The regrouped and proceeded to Arnhem / Oosterbeek coming under heavy machine gun fire and grenades all the way to Arnhem. On 19 September 1944 a meeting was held at the South Staffordshire Bn Field HQ and orders were given for the South Staffords to withdraw (if they weren't already dead). It was thought that the men were still on the bridge and orders were given to either reinforce or relieve the trapped Paratroopers at all costs. "D" Company advanced with 11th Para on their flank to give them covering fire. Edwards states in "Orders were to get through, on no account be held up until we had joined 2 Para on the Bridge", "When we came near the St. Elizabeth Hospital all hell broke loose, we were in the open and like targets in a shooting gallery. Capt Wyss ran up and down shouting 'On On On' like a harrier, stumbling over the dead and dying, slithering in pools of blood, until I reached partial shelter by some buildings". The Germans shelled the houses and set fire to them so protection was continually diminished. Then German tanks appeared and they started using Anti-Aircraft Artillery to make it even worse. The 3rd and 1st Paras suffered heavy losses and had to withdraw leaving the Staffords on their own and exposed on all sides. Edwards states "Opposition was terrific now, we were subject to the heaviest shelling and mortaring imaginable, also Tanks attacked us, we had no officer left so a Sergeant, his boots squelching blood, have the order to get out and join the first organised Unit we came to". When the Staffords pulled back they had to leave the wounded in the cellars to be taken prisoner by the Germans later. The troops were now being blown out of the ground by point blank range of 88mm fire from German Tanks. A German vehicle with loudspeaker came up "Come out you South Staffords, you are surrounded and there is no way out, come to the door with your hands up above your heads". The South Staffords carried on, some were captured some escaped and fell back to Oosterbeek. 375 men were left of the 2nd Bn, every morning Germans put up an intense mortar barrage. At Oosterbeek the Brigade HQ had moved to a laundry building, and on 22 September it was bombed and a store of ammunition exploded. Ammunition was now practically non-existent and soldiers were using German small arms picked up from dead Germans. On 25 September another heavy Artillery barrage by the Germans and this time Tiger Tanks were used, The South Staffords were overrun and many surrendered. Orders were issued to pull back the remnants over the Rhine during the night. Boats were sent to pick them up under heavy machine gun fire and several were sunk. Some of the men stripped and tried to swim across the river but were taken prisoner. Edwards was taken prisoner in Oosterbeek towards the end of the battle and interned in Stalag Xib. Private Edwards was interviewed by Cornelius Ryan for his book A Bridge too Far (copy of the book is included in the lot).

Early railway interest. A collection of 16 photographs depicting railway construction in the Leicester area circa 1895. Size approximately 12 x16.5cm. Possibly by the photographer Sydney Walter Alfred Newton who lived in Leicester and documented the construction of the Great Central Railway, a line that would connect Nottinghamshire with London. Newton was noteable for documenting the lives of the Navvies who worked the railways and this collection contains remarkable photos of the men at work, as well as posed images. Four photographs show the same group of 8-10 well dressed men, possibly contractors or engineers. In one photograph they pose on and in front of a locoamotive identifiable as H.Lovatt No.2 a 0-6-0 saddletank locomotive built in Leeds in 1872 and was one of the fleet owned by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton who built the Leicester section of the Great Central Railway or 'London Extension'. Although many of the locations have since been demolished, the view from Bowstring Bridge over the River Soar is identifiable which used to be the only place in the UK where a railway bridge, went over a road bridge, going over a river (in that order). A remarkable and fascinating collection of historical images. Also one other card mounted photograph by Hobart & Co of Wolverhampton circa 1890s depicting a tall wall of advertising hoardings in Wolverhampton.

First World War officers Glengarry to the Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles), the Glengarry is dark blue with a dark blue tourie to the top, the headband is bound in faux silk, the tails are intact though a little tatty in places, the badge is in unmarked silver and is heavily tarnished backed by a black silk cockade/ribbon, inside there is a makers label to Wm. Anderson & Sons Ltd. Edinburgh & Glasgow, a well known military outfitters who had a premises at 14 George Street, Edinburgh, the Glengarry is unusual in that the Cameronians wore a dark ( rifle) green Glengarry with black tourie, the only explanation we can think of for this discrepancy is that late in 1914 three types of plain utility pattern Glengarries were introduced to simplify manufacture, the blue with blue tourie was one such pattern and although a green pattern was also manufactured it could have been a case of 'take what you can' due to the scale of demand by newly raised battalions at this time, the Glengarry was among the possessions of Colonel Godfrey Edward Tallents D.S.O. whose other uniform items are also in this auction, the Glengarry is well worn and the badge has been in situ for a very long time the cotter pin holding the badge in place leaving an imprint and verdigris on the liner opposite, it is unknown why Col. Tallents had this item in his possession but presumably it belonged to an army friend or aquaintance. (Godfrey Edward Tallents was born on the 31st August 1883, he was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military College Sandhurst, on passing out of the R.M.C. Tallents was posted to the 3rd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers in the West Indies, he went on to serve with them in Malta and St. Helena,on the disbandment of the 3rd Battalion in 1906 transferred to the 1st Battalion, he was in India with this Battalion when the First World War broke out in 1914, 1st L.F. returned to the U.K. and joined the 29th Division, on 25th April 1915 1st L.F. landed on 'W' beach ( Lancashire Landing) Cape Helles, Gallipoli under a storm of fire, Tallents, by now a Captain, led an outflanking assault on the Turkish positions and was credited with breaking their line, later the same day he was badly wounded when he was shot in the head, the bullet entering the left side and exiting on the right shattering his eye socket into three pieces, for his actions that day Tallents was Mentioned in Dispatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order, 1st L.F. suffered casualties of around 700 killed and wounded that day out of 1000 present and earned '6 V.C.'s before breakfast', after recovering in hospital in Malta Tallents returned to the U.K. briefly before going to France where he served on the Western Front as Staff Captain ( 177 Inf. Bde.), and G.S.O.2 (34th Div., 38th Div., GHQ, and 42nd Div. ) and was again mentioned in dispatches, after the war Tallents took command of 'D' Company 1st L.F. and then as a Major commanded the Depot Lancashire Fusiliers at Bury, he attended the senior officers course and in 1928 as Lieutenant Colonel took command of 2nd Bn. L.F. at Multan in India returning to the U.K in 1930, during the Second World War Tallents served as a Colonel on the staff of Northern Command in the U.K. as G.S.O.2, he passed away in 1967 )

Second quarter of 19th century unsigned oil miniature, head and shoulders portrait of Capt Thomas Baker, he wears a blue Naval tunic with white cravat, the frame inscribed in gilt "Capt Thomas Baker, H.M.S. Princess Royal, 1797. Now, Rear-Adml. Sir Thomas Baker. K K.C.B. & C. K K.C.B. & C. 1835". Note: Capt Thomas Baker, a Nelson contemporary, was engaged in several actions. Two were most important. On 25th July, with a squadron in company, he opened fire on the Danish frigate "Freyer" when the Danes refused to allow their ships to be searched. This was the cause of the rupture of the Northern Federation and the preliminary to the battle of Copenhagen. The second important action was when Baker, in the frigate "Phoenix" came across Domanoir's four 74-gun ships, which had escaped Trafalgar. Baker drew their shot and led them to Sir Richard Strachan's ships, who gave battle and overcame them. R.C.F. 19th century gold and enamelled framed portrait miniature of Viscount Lord Nelson, after Hoppner, the front bezel in dark blue and white enamel with eight garnet mounts, the back with central hair panel surrounded by dark blue enamelling and a gold outer, inscribed "A token of regard to Sir Hyde Parker from HN". Note: Sir Hyde Parker (1739-1807) was a contemporary of Lord Nelson, born in Devon, the second son of Admiral Sir Hyde Parker, 5th Baronet (1714-1782), in 1801 he was appointed to command the Baltic Fleet destined to break up the Northern Armed Neutrality, with Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson as his second in command. The first objective of the expedition, fell in the battle of Copenhagen on the 2nd April 1801, to the fierce attack of Nelson's squadron - Parker, with the heavier ships taking little part due to the shallowness of the channel. At the height of the battle Parker, who was loth to infringe the customary rules of Naval warfare, raised the flag to disengage. Famously, Nelson ignored the order from his commander by raising his telescope to his blind eye and exclaiming "I really do not see the signal". This may or may not be purely a myth. Nelson pressed on with the action and ultimately compelled the Danish forces to capitulate. Parker's hesitation to advance at the Baltic Sea after his victory was later severely criticised. Soon afterwards he was recalled and Nelson succeeded him. Overall size of frame 10cm x 8cm within a later folding leather case Provenance: Vost's, Newmarket 21 November 1997 Lot 216 £400-600
