Montague J. Dawson (1895-1973), Öl auf Leinwand, u.li. sign., auf der Rahmung Titelei: SIR LANCELOT "tis not the gales, but the set of your sails, that determines the way you go", verso etikettiert von Frost & Reed, hier als Titelei: wind in the rigging (Wind in der Takelage), Bemaßung: 28 x 42 inches (71,2 x 106,68 cm). Provenance: - Frost & Reed, London, Reg. No. 41569 , mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit aus dem Atelier des Künstlers - Im Besitz der Fortnum and Mason Collection in London - Im Besitz von Garfield Howard Weston / Canada - Privatcollection Rhein-Main Gebiet Montague J. Dawson (1895-1973), oil on canvas, l.l. signed., title on the frame: SIR LANCELOT "tis not the gales, but the set of your sails, that determines the way you go", labeled on the reverse by Frost & Reed, here as a title: wind in the rigging, dimensions: 28 x 42 inches (71.2 x 106.68 cm). "The Race Home". The clipper Sir Lancelot in 1869 commanded by Captain Richard "Dickie" Robinson in stormy weather. The famous clipper with its much vaunted slenderness and elegant lines is not the focus here. Dawson focuses on a scenario on deck - hanging the viewer in the rigging - or giving him the view of a seagull - and thus takes him through a raging, stormy sea in a thundery atmosphere. The protagonist of this work is the wide-legged and upright captain Richard Robinson on the deck of the three-master, who instructs his crew and skillfully maneuvers them. In this scenario, Dawson reflects the theme of the painting: not the storms, but the setting of your sails determines your path. Famed and widely acclaimed for this talent, "Dickie" Robinson sets a new record between China and London in the 1869 Clipper Race with Sir Lancelot. Considering the time of year and the distance, it is agreed that the Sir Lancelot's 1869 crossing was the fastest from China to England. The vast majority of his works, particularly the 19th century tea clippers, depict specific ships at a specific location on a predetermined itinerary. In this case, however, it is the "portrait" of the famous "Dickie" Robinson with his ship, the Sir Lancelot, at the 1869 clipper race. Seven ships were primarily involved in this race, including the Ariel, Leander, Thermopylae, Chrysolite and Stornoway. Dawson documents this famous event in several paintings, of which this work is the centerpiece. A Fairbairn-Sykes 1st Pattern Commando fighting knife, the 16.5cm double edged spear-point blade (tip missing) marked to the ricasso The F-S Fighting Knife and Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd London to the opposing side, having a shaped oval cross guard with chequered nickel grip, housed in a nickel mounted leather sheath with Newey Pat. button, 29.5cm, together with London Scottish Regiment cap badge and a volume of Stephen Schofield's Musketoon with related press cuttings.Formerly the property of 841059 Private Reginald Makeham and sold by family descent. Ipswich born Private Reginald Makeham of the Gordon Highlanders and No. 2 Commando was one of seven men who were captured after Operation Musketoon, and later executed at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Berlin, on 23rd October 1942. He was aged 28.Operation Musketoon was the codeword for a WWII British-Norwegian commando raid on an electricity generating station and aluminium manufacturing plant at Glomfjord, in German-occupied Norway. Two officers and eight men from No 2 Commando alongside two Norwegian corporals working for the SOE set off on 11th September 1942.They crossed the North Sea on a Minerve-class submarine belonging to the Free French Navy, Junon, which was chosen due to its silhouette appearing similar to a German U-boat. Upon reaching the shore they set out on a difficult overland mountainous trek to Glomfjord, which took several more days. They established a hide-out overlooking the plant and, despite close encounters with German scouting groups, decided upon the night of 20th September to carry out the attack, as they were running low on supplies. After infiltrating the plant, the men helped the Norwegian workers to escape and planted plastic explosives around the pipes and machinery. One German guard was killed and another wounded during the operation, but the men completed their mission before German reinforcements arrived. The destruction they caused was hugely out-of-proportion to the small number of men involved in the special operation and the plant remained closed for the rest of the war. However, during the attempted escape, seven of the ten Commandos were captured, taken to Colditz Castle, and later executed at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp under Hitler's infamous Commando Order. It was not until the proceedings of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials that the raid and the criminal imprisonment and execution of the Commandos became common knowledge, as the German Army had stated that the commandos had escaped. The men, including Makeham, are commemorated on the memorial plaque at Sachsenhausen and the Brookwood Memorial for British and Commonwealth Second World War soldiers who have no known grave. Wilkinson marks are worn.Gouge to the pommel. No further condition issues which cannot be seen in the images.

GLENFIDDICH 18 YEAR OLD ANCIENT RESERVESingle malt.Without Glenfiddich, Scotland might not enjoy the same thriving whisky scene it has today. Founded in 1886 by William Grant, and still family owned, Glenfiddich was one of the first distilleries to seriously market single malt whisky as a credible alternative to blends. This decision was prompted by a dispute with their grain supplier in 1963, leading to a scaling back in production of their Grant’s blend. By the late 1960s Glenfiddich single malt was a firm hit with the Jet Set, who were picking it up in their droves from the newly emerging Duty-Free market. That early prescience clearly paid off, as (despite strong competition from fellow Speyside giants Glenlivet and Macallan) Glenfiddich is consistently the best-selling single malt in the world, shifting over 1 million cases every year.43% ABV 75cl
