Nicholas Ferenczy (20th/21st century) "The Man Who Flew to Music: Nureyev's Defection #4", signed, hand-stencilled acrylic and metal leaf on canvas.30cm x 80cm (11.75in x 31.5in)Footnote:* The painting is based on Rudolf Nureyev’s dance to ‘Pierrot Lunaire’ - music by Schoenberg, set to poems by Albert Giraud. There is a remarkable moment in a documentary when at Le Bourget airport, Paris, Nureyev defects – breaking free of the shadowy KGB figures by his side and a rushing into the waiting arms of those offering asylum. In the painting the figure is arranged in steps almost as if dancing up a musical stave above the onion-domed buildings and away.Condition report:The painting is in very good, original condition with no obvious faults to report. The painting is unframed.

Following the Second World War, he moved to St. Ives where Heron introduced him to Margaret Mellis, who later became his wife. Together they moved to London, and then the South of France, where he first started to paint and draw, inspired by the landscape surrounding the family property. They returned to England in 1950, settling in Suffolk and establishing a farm. In 1952, Davison started making collages, using torn paper, and a stark colour palette. He only started to receive recognition for his work in the late 1970s, with inclusion in some high-profile exhibitions. His popularity and renown has increased since his death, with several exhibitions and an acknowledgment of him as an inspiration from Damien Hirst.Artists’ Resale Right (“droit de suite”) may apply to this lot.Condition report:The painting is in very good, original condition with no obvious faults to report. A VERY RARE Herend 19th Century (c.1890), 6 Piece Coffee Set of Cornucopia Tupini Pattern (7). To consist of 1 coffee pot and 6 demi-tasse cups and saucers. All pieces bear the Herend mark for c.1890. The birth of the Tupini pattern - also known as the Cornucopia Tupini pattern - in 1870 was inspired by Arabian ceramics glittering in enamel colours. Borrowing just a handful of motifs from the mysterious Orient, the masters of Herend conjured up this pattern to embrace the heated, spicy, intoxicating fairy world of the Arabian Nights. Perhaps that is why it caught the eye of the Shah of Persia, who ordered it from Herend. This set comes from a private collection.Condition report: Excellent. Very minor wear to gilding. One saucer and one coffee cup show an indication of a tiny surface crack to glazing.
