Predominantly working in sculpture and installation, Feinstein’s is a world of fairy tale and fantasy, though she never takes her eyes off the fact that these stories were ultimately mired in the darker impulses found in the recesses of the human psyche. This is achieved through an interplay between opposing forces; 'romance and pornography, elegance and kitsch, and the marvellous and the banal,' as her biography in Gagosian has it.Feinstein achieved her first big break in 1994 when she was included in several group shows in New York, including Let the Artist Live! at Exit Art, where she notoriously presented a large gingerbread house modelled after Sleeping Beauty’s castle in which she slept throughout the exhibition.Further major exhibitions have followed. In 2000, the same year the work offered here for sale, Yesterday, was produced, Feinstein exhibited works in Pastoral Pop at the Whitney Museum at Philip Morris and at The Americans exhibition at the Barbican Centre in London. In 2019 the Jewish Museum, New York, hosted her major exhibition Maiden, Mother, Crone.Feinstein, who is married to the renowned artist John Currin, has also long been interconnected with the world of high fashion; her artwork inspiring a range by Marc Jacobs in 2004. In 2019 she was tasked with transforming the gardens of Chatsworth House, England in collaboration with Gucci.

§ ALAN DAVIE C.B.E., R.A., H.R.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1920-2014) OPUS O. 1393: SORCERER'S BAG, 1998 Oil on wooden panelDimensions:48cm x 62cm (19in x 24.5in)Note: Note: Few British artists of the 20th century are quite as intriguing as Alan Davie. Low key and independent, Davie operated outwith the art world ‘scene’ until his death in 2014 which means that, despite his popularity amongst critics and collectors, he isn’t the household name he perhaps deserves to be. Hopefully this is set to alter; it is with happy serendipity that this sale coincides with a major exhibition of his work at Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh, celebrating the centenary of his birth. He met and was admired by the great collector Peggy Guggenheim in Venice in the late 1940s and was close to members of the American Abstract Expressionist movement including Jackson Pollock.Taking reference points from a vast area of art history - Celtic, Buddhist, African, Hindi and Modernist to name but a few - he created a language of emblems and symbols with the aim of capturing the 'mysterious and spiritual forces normally beyond our comprehension.' Davie’s esotericism and eccentricity earned him the reputation as something of a “shaman”, a fitting title for an artist who sought to live his entire life as an exploration of the magic that underpins art, music and philosophy. The artist has had retrospectives at the Barbican, London, Tate St Ives and Tate Britain. He was appointed CBE in 1972 and elected a senior Royal Academician in 2012.

PHILIP COLBERT (SCOTTISH 1979-) THE DEATH OF MARAT AND THE BIRTH OF THE LOBSTER Signed, oil on canvasDimensions:180cm x 240.5cm (70.75in x 94in)Note: Note:‘I became an artist when I became a lobster’. – Philip ColbertLyon & Turnbull are proud to present to auction The Death of Marat and the Birth of The Lobster, a major painting by the leading contemporary British artist Philip Colbert. All proceeds from the sale will support a scholarship programme at the University of St Andrews, offering financial support to students on its new Museum and Heritage Studies part time course.Colbert has taken up the legacy of Pop Art with such commitment and relish that he has been referred to as 'The Godson of Andy Warhol'. To Colbert, Pop’s lexicon is an egalitarian and highly effective vehicle for distilling and conveying universal symbols with immediacy. It is also an excellent conduit for satire, which Colbert recognises as the most universally effective method of communicating ideas that, in his words, 'shake the cage.' His take on Pop is nevertheless hugely original and feels fresh and accessible. His highly saturated, airbrushed finish eliminates any trace of the artist’s hand in favour of an aesthetic that cleverly makes us second guess whether it is digitally generated. His work is also replete with art historical reference points, inverting and toying with his audience’s perception of Pop’s throwaway or disposable imagery.Colbert is also frequently described as a ‘Neo-Surrealist’ and The Lobster, his muse and alter-ego, is inherently steeped in the legacy of Salvador Dali, a forebear who also found himself drawn to the alien and absurd qualities of this extraordinary creature. As ever with Colbert however, the meaning is many layered. His adoption of the lobster speaks also to a fascination with its earlier symbolism within Dutch still life as a metaphor for mortality. Lobsters have been known to live for hundreds of years, and Colbert seeks to harness the lobster’s history as a cipher for humanity’s wrestle with our transience in this world. The Death of Marat and the Birth of The Lobster was the centrepiece of Colbert’s eponymous exhibition in 2021 which marked the re-opening of the Wardlaw Museum after its redevelopment. Prior to establishing himself as a highly successful visual artist, Colbert graduated from the University of St. Andrews in Philosophy. During his studies he also undertook classes in Art History, and it was here that the artist encountered David’s famous painting The Death of Marat, sparking several important connections for the artist.Jean-Paul Marat, the famous French revolutionary, also graduated from St Andrews, receiving a medical degree in 1775. When the French Revolution began in 1789, he led a political group called the Jacobins, who wanted to depose the monarchy and form a republic. Charlotte Corday was also a revolutionary but sought political ends with less slaughter. She despised Marat for executing thousands of people. In 1793 she murdered him in his bath. David, a friend of Marat’s, created his famous painting the same year.In this work we find not a dead Marat, but a relaxed lobster scrolling through his smart phone in the bath. The lobster wears pyjamas patterned with fried eggs, yet another symbol of Colbert’s, who used to make his own clothing. Colbert is drawn visually to the egg as a wonderfully pared back, almost modernist form (a 'mini-Mondrian', as the artist would have it), but also as an historic symbol of life and re-birth.This work can be described as a distillation of formative experiences and themes that shaped Colbert’s artistic development, the trigger points of his extraordinarily imaginative creative world. Combined with it having been central to a major exhibition and now sold as an altruistic endeavour, it would not be an exaggeration to describe this as an important painting in the artist’s oeuvre, and a rare and exciting opportunity for collectors of his work.

§ PAUL NEAGU (ROMANIAN/BRITISH 1938-2004) HUMAN FOOT SHADOW, 1973 Signed, inscribed with title and dated '73 lower left, further inscribed 'Human Foot, 35 cells, GENERATIVE ART GROUP', mixed media on paperDimensions:39cm x 27cm (15.25in x 10.5in)Provenance:Provenance: Gifted by the artist to Silvia Radu and Vasile Gorduz, Romanian artists and close friends of Neagu (work bears inscription from Neagu to the pair verso); Gifted by Silvia Radu to the present ownerNote: Note: Paul Neagu’s legacy within the UK artworld is one of quiet but profound impact, with the generation of students he taught – Rachel Whiteread, Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor (who authored his obituary), attesting to his influence on their own work. His artistic practice was underpinned by his personal philosophical theory of the world; a sophisticated if esoteric approach which, though valued by curators, institutions and centres of education here from the early stages of his career, was out of step with his contemporaries at the time.As a Romanian émigré, Neagu’s output inevitably had a cross-cultural outlook, and his sculpture, drawings and performances were underpinned by an exploration of the metaphysical, and can be described as straddling craft and conceptualism. Though these features distinguished him and set his work apart, it also meant he did not fit within the general trends in the British art world at this point, to the detriment of his standing amongst collectors of British sculpture today. Kapoor in his tribute remarks that, “…inevitably, he struggled against a British art world that preferred to see the artist as a maker of things rather than, as he saw it, art, and therefore the artist, as a generator of a philosophical world view.”Growing up in tough conditions behind the Iron Curtain, the young Neagu enrolled at the Bucharest Institute of Fine Art in 1963. Social Realism was the official visual language under the Communist regime, and so he was forced to make forays into abstraction in secret. These constraints ultimately led to the development of his core belief that art is an expression of 'desire in the face of the systems that attempt to inhibit it'. Throughout the 1960s he developed his ‘palpable objects’: construction-like box assemblages made out of humble materials and traditional Romanian woodworking techniques; a thread to his practise which he never abandoned and can be observed in the work offered here for sale, ‘Ongoing Hyphen’.His ticket to the West came in the form of an invitation from the now legendary art impresario Richard Demarco to exhibit at his gallery in 1969. A powerhouse behind the Edinburgh Art Festival, Demarco was extraordinarily outward looking for the time and made it his mission to discover and expose talent from Eastern Europe over in the West (other names he is responsible for championing include Marina Abramovich and Joseph Beuys). Neagu settled in the UK permanently in 1970, making London his home. Before long he became a well-respected teacher, most notably lecturing at the Hornsey, the Slade and the Chelsea School of Art, and in 1976 becoming Associate Professor at the Royal College of Art.His work encompassed aspects of performance as well as drawing and construction, and explored the relationship between ritualism and sculpture, as well as spirituality. Sculpture, as Neagu saw it, was to be experienced by all five senses and had the potential to have a profound, spiritual, and potentially healing impact on its audience. In order to convey these aims, he developed specific totemic symbols which he then continued to re-work over the course of his career. The first and most significant of these was the Hyphen form. As Kapoor describes, “…in 1975, Neagu made his first Hyphen - it started life as a three-legged workbench assembled somewhat in the folk tradition of Romanian furniture. Quickly Neagu understood the immense metaphysical potential of this tripod structure. From it he evolved a complete anthropocosmic view which, in parallel with Joseph Beuys in Germany and, previously, Yves Klein in France, suggested a spiritual remedy for the ills of contemporary man.” These reference points are notably European, again underpinning that Neagu’s process was something of an anomaly within the British art movements of the period. This though, as I alluded earlier, is to the advantage of discerning collectors with a more internationalistic outlook today, as his work remains accessibly priced.Lyon & Turnbull are pleased to offer for sale ‘On-going Hyphen’, from 1992. Crafted in some of Neagu’s traditional materials, wood and gesso, it represents a later iteration of the original hyphen form, which Neagu approached again with vigour in this year.We are also pleased to offer one of his ‘human cell’ drawings, ‘Human Foot Shadow’, from 1973 – a further aspect of his ‘Anthropocosmic’ concept which he developed in the early 1970s.In 2003 Tate Britain acquired Neagu’s 30-year archive and exhibited some of his work from the 1970s and 1980s, and his work can be found in public collections including, among others, the British Museum, London, le Fond départemental d'art contemporain, Seine Saint-Denis, Bobigny, France, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin, the Musee Cantonal de Beaux Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland, the National Museum of Art of Romania, Bucharest, the Philadelphia Art Museum, Philadelphia, USA, and the Tate Gallery, London.

A SHOTLEY BRIDGE HOUSEHOLD CAVALRY BACKSWORDLATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURYWith Walloon-type brass hilt and shell-guards cast with a crest of a boar statent beneath an earl's coronet and garter motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, the 32inch single edge blade faintly stamped SHOTLEY BRIDGE, 96cm in lengthTogether with two others similar, one with fullered blade, one with backsword blade, the former stamped HEINRICH + KOLLE, the latter with remnants of Shotley BridgeProvenance:Property of The Hon. Catherine Mary Wass, OBE (1942-2021) most likely inherited from the 7th Viscount Gort in 1975 from Hamsterley Hall, Co. Durham The crest belongs to John HOLLES (1662-1711) 4th Earl of Clare (from 1689), created Marquess of Clare and Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne (1694) and Knight of the Garter KG (1698). Holles was a firm Protestant but supporter of Charles II. Upon the accession of James II he could not tolerate a return to popery and supported Lord Danby who held York for William of Orange and was one of the seven signatories of the invitation to William and this may be the origin of the Oley of Shotley Bridge swords with his crest. He was killed when he fell from a horse while hunting near Welbeck. His father was Gilbert HOLLES (1633-1689) 3rd Earl of Clare and mother Grace PIERREPONT. In 1690 he married Lady Margaret CAVENDISH (1661-1717) and they had one child a daughter Lady Henrietta Cavendish HOLLES.Objects with this crest could be dated between 1698 and 1711 but it is not known how the swords relate to the John Holles. All titles of John HOLLES became extinct on his death. Note: In the 17th century, a group of German swordsmiths from Solingen, the famous sword making centre in Germany settled in Shotley Bridge, County Durham in order to escape religious persecution. It was chosen because of a plentiful supply of ironstone and water locally. Their fine blades were much prized and they were manufactured locally until 1840.Condition Report: The first sword is the best of the three examples. The fish skin handle is a later embellishment and the blade has corrosion to the surface. The other two are in poorer condition and the guard of one has been cut down or damaged in action and never repaired.Condition Report Disclaimer
