English School, (18th century), Allegorical portrait of a lady in deshabille, possibly as Cleopatra, holding a bunch of flowers in her left arm, and grasping a serpent in her left hand, within an extensive landscape, oil on canvas, 125 x 101.5 cm in a composite plaster frame applied with repeating leaf and berry motifs. In the present condition, it is difficult to tell if the snake is entwined around the sitter's arm; if this is the case, the allusion is to Eurydice, the wife of Orpheus, who fleeing from an unwanted suitor, trod on a sanke, and died from its bite (Ovid, Metamorphsis, 10: 1-10). However, it seems more likely that the allusion is to Cleopatra, who is often depicted holding a snake to her breast.

I would venture to ask you to keep the Book of Prayers back until your book and the chaplets are a long way towards being sold out." More positively, "We have decided to print a thousand copies of the small and two hundred & fifty of the large edition "Olde ffrendes" ... When the book is printed I propose sending you an early large paper copy for colouring which you can return as soon as possible so that I may use it as a pattern ... I trust there will not be any corrections as we have had to cast every page in order to get the old look about the type, which is done in a special manner after the casts are made." In his role as executor, Crawhall is advised that "People here are saying it is a mistake to hold the Bewick sale in Newcastle, as only the biggest buyers will attend, & collectors who might run prices up will be left out in the cold!", slight spotting, faint folds (3).
