A Caughley dessert plate with a blue painted scene within a gilt spangled border, circa 1785-93, impressed Salopian mark, 20.8cm diameter (gilding rubbed)Provenance: Wright Collection no. 875, purchased in 2011. From the Star and Spangles service, the painting on plate may be influenced by a Continental or Fantasy scene. It was Gaye Blake Roberts who first shed significant light on these designs in 1974 within an English Ceramic Circle Transaction paper in which it was reported that the source of several scenes from a Bright Landscapes dessert service were taken from Paul Sandby's Virtouosis' Museum published in 1778. The Gold Star Border and Spangles dessert service was first illustrated in 1969 by Godden. Research has shown that there are at least two dessert services with this gilt design.
An exceptionally important Caughley mask-head jug, printed in blue on both sides with a 'Severn Trow' passing underneath the Shropshire Ironbridge, an angler in the foreground, dated 1790 and initialled JH or possibly IH, 18.5cm highProvenance: Wright Collection no. 360, purchased in 1986 from HWO, Shrewsbury. Speculatively, the initials may refer to John Hill, who was a member of the Hill family of Hawkstone who was 21 in 1790. Col. John Hill was born in 1769 and died in 1814, the son of John Hill, 3rd Baronet (1740-1824) and father of Rowland, the 1st Viscount, who never married, to his son Rowland. The Hills of Hawkstone are well known as patrons of both Caughley and CoalportSir John Hill (3rd Baronet) was the one involved in the celebratory Parliamentary scandal and unpleasant family row about the result of the 1796 election. He commissioned the Coalport Election as a protest at the result and a campaign to get the result overturned. Sir John Hill had rejected a claimed family agreement that he would step aside for his cousin, Sir Richard Hill of Attingham, and then lost by 44 votes.

Literature: Ironbridge 1999 no.174 and The Caughley Society, Caughley Blue and White Patterns, p.111.The monogram reads J, I or T H and 1790. If one could be definite about the initials, both or either very speculatively may refer to a member of the Hill family of Hawkstone who was 21 that year.

A pair of early Victorian silver meat platters with an old Sheffield plated meat dish cover, by the Barnards, London 1845, the cover and handle unmarked, oval form, foliate, scroll and shell border, engraved with the Hornby crest, the meat dish cover of oval form, with a similar border, the handle modelled as the Hornby crest, length of platters 50.5cm, length of cover 40.5cm, approx. weight 145oz. (3) William Henry Hornby had a distinguished career in both politics and commerce, with his mill in Blackburn employing around 1400 employees. He was Chariman of the Conservative party and Member of Parliament for Blackburn from 1857-1865. During an election riot in 1835, Hornby was thrown over the parapet of old Salford bridge by an infuriated mob, and in 1841 during a similar riot he recalled "... It was then hardly safe for me to walk through the streets; my house was in danger and at last it was attacked, about 8 o'clock in the evening and every window was smashed. Fortunately I got back there before the front door was opened, and having a brace of pistols, I discharged one, and every man of that gallant crew ran away". His sons, Edward Hornby and William, were also MPs for Blackburn, and his third son, Albert, was the England cricket captain who lost the Test match which gave rise to the Ashes, at home against the Australians in 1882.

A George III eighteen carat gold and enamelled box, by Alexander James Strachan, London 1806, circular form, the hinged cover set with an enamelled pastoral panel of a young couple with their son attracting their attention to nesting doves, on a gold ground within an engine-turned border, the convex sides and base with similar engine-turning, the underside of the cover with a crest dated June 1794 and bearing the Order of Bath, diameter 7cm, weight 99.5gms. The crest was granted by Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms (1820-53) to Vice Admiral Sir Ross DONNELLY, RN who was invested KCB (military) on 17 March 1837. The date inscribed within the crest, June 1794, was of great significance to Donnelly: The Glorious First of June (also known as the Third Battle of Ushant, or Bataille du 13 Prairial) was the first and largest fleet action of the naval conflict between Great Britain and the First French Republic during the French Revolutionary Wars. The British Channel Fleet under Admiral Lord Howe attempted to prevent the passage of a vital French grain convoy from the United States, which was protected by the French Atlantic Fleet, commanded by Rear-Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse. The two forces clashed in the Atlantic Ocean, some 400 nautical miles (741 km) west of the French island of Ushant. Donnelly started the battle as first lieutenant of the Montagu but after the death of his captain, James Montagu, took command. After the battle Donnelly and a number of other officers who had had to take command of their vessels after the deaths of their captain were disappointed not to receive the gold medal issued to all post captains involved. There were bitter consequences of these awards, rooted in Howe's official dispatch to the Admiralty concerning the battle. After studying the ship's logs and reports of the battle, the Admiralty minted a medal to be awarded to the living captains on the list only (although Captain William Parker of HMS Audacious was awarded one as well). The captains excluded from the list were furious, and the furore from this selective commendation lasted years: in 1795 Vice-Admiral Caldwell quit the service in anger as a result. Over five decades later the battle was among the actions recognised by a clasp attached to the Naval General Service Medal, awarded upon application to all British participants still living in 1847. This rule was afterwards modified and, both after the Nile and Trafalgar, first lieutenants who succeeded to the command by the death of their captain received the medals or other awards.

An extremely amusing and rare satire on the heights of folly that accompanied the California Gold Rush, personified in the character of 'Tom Tiddler.' ‘The author lampoons gold companies, like the delightful 'Great Doo and Diddle Gold, Silver, Copper, and Brass, Smash, Dash and Crash Company,' and comments on the feverish effect of the word 'gold' on people's imagination. 'Prigger' is defined as a thief. 'Tom Tiddler' can be translated as any place where pickings may be sought or had without effective interference’ - Howell. ‘This satirical piece is based on the experience of the English who invested in California and Australian mines. The company's holdings were located in the 'Moschetto and Torpedo Districts' of California’- Kurutz; BOUND WITH Watson, Joseph Yelloly: The Progress of Mining in 1854, with remarks upon the failure of gold mining in England.
