Sarah Louise Kilpack (1840-1909), Mount Orgueil, oil on card, 9.75 x 6.5cm, together with, Longboat approaching rocks, oil on card, 10 x 6.25cm, Figures on steps approaching a castle, oil on card, 9.75 x 7.75cm, Stormy shore with castle on a hill, initialled bottom left, oil on card, 9.25 x 7cm. (4) Sarah Louise Kilpack (1840-1909) was born at 42 King Street, Covent Garden, London and from an early age showed a great natural aptitude for music and drawing. At the age of 11, she played a Beethoven sonata at the Old St James’s Hall, near Piccadilly Circus. As she grew up, she played more and more concerts, the fees from which enabled her to journey out of London to the country where she would sketch ‘plein air’. In Jersey she struck up friendships with two families; the Brooke family who lived at Tamworth Villas, Colomberie and a Mrs Renouf who lived with her daughter in St Saviours Road. By all accounts, Sarah Kilpack found it difficult to place trust in people and was a rather solitary person. Her paintings seem to express her moods; dark and threatening in the storm pictures with occasional glimpses of her renowned warmth and affection in her languid sunset paintings and calm coastal landscapes. She exhibited each year from 1867 at the Society of Female Artists Exhibition (now known as The Society of Women Artists) London. Despite her earnings of some £500 a year throughout the 1880’s, she died in relative poverty in 1909. An exhibition of Channel Island paintings by Sarah Kilpack was held at The Cook Gallery, Jersey in 1989. This coincided with, and marked, the 150th anniversary of her birth. In the same year a set of commemorative stamps were produced entitled ‘Jersey Calms and Storms’. The views depicted were Gorey Harbour, La Corbiere, Freve De Lecu, Bouze Bay and Mont Orgueil. This, probably unique collection, depicts a complete range and subject matter. They are all small size, originating from sketch books in the artists collection. Provenance: Viola Gardener, Dulverton, Devon. Mrs June Day, nee Spanton-Brain, Devon. Mr William Elmhurst.

The original purpose of Cook`s first voyage was to observe the transit of Venus. This was accomplished at Tahiti but six months were then spent on the coast of New Zealand, which was circumnavigated and charted for the first time, as was the east coast of Australia. It was of course Cook who named New South Wales and naturalists on the expedition who named Botany Bay. The second voyage disproved the myth of the existence of a further southern continent and made the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. Numerous further explorations were undertaken and discoveries made, including the New Hebrides, New Caledonia and South Georgia. Knowledge of the South Pacific was given a firm basis for the first time and the maps made then remain valid today. The final voyage was principally directed towards the search for a Northwest Passage from the Pacific, culminating in Cook`s tragic murder in the Hawaiian Islands. The second edition of the first voyage differs from the first in that it contains a Preface to the second edition, in which Hawkesworth replies to the charges made against him by Alexander Dalrymple, and in that each volume is separately paginated. Wales, William Astronomical observations made in the voyages... for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere. London: sold by P. Elmsley, 1788. 4to, [[iv], xii, *4, 146], 2 folding maps, contemporary tree calf gilt, red label, Northern Lighthouse Board gilt stamp to upper board, rubbing to backstrip, some offsetting to title Note: Wales was appointed by the Board of Longitude to accompany Captain James Cook on his second voyage of 1772–75, replacing the astronomer (and Wales` brother-in-law) Charles Green, who had died during the return leg of Cook`s first voyage. A major part of Wales` duties was to test Larcum Kendall`s K1 chronometer, based on the H4 of John Harrison. Wallis and Carteret had been to the South Pacific in 1766. It was in 1778 that Wales was given the task of producing the official astronomical account of Cook’s first voyage following the death of Charles Green. In order to clarify Green’s accounts earlier observations had to be included, and with Cook’s untimely death during the third Voyage Wales had a mammoth task producing this work without Green or Cook’s assistance. Once published however the information was of great value to seamen. The first edition of 1777 contains four plates and maps.
