Patrick Kinna Winston Churchills PPS signed 10 x 8 inch Yalta Conference photo. Patrick Kinna, who has died aged 95, witnessed many of the most significant allied meetings of the second world war as clerk to the prime minister, Winston Churchill. The job came out of the blue, with a call from Downing Street instructing Kinna to join a warship in Scotland that would take the prime minister to a mid-Atlantic rendezvous with the American president, Franklin Roosevelt. At that meeting, the prime minister's dictating fluency threatened to smother the president in a flood of long messages. I was terribly busy all the time, Kinna later recalled. I spent days and days typing. Asked why he was chosen for this important job, Kinna always said it came down to his great speed at shorthand (150 words per minute) and typing (90 wpm). From then on, Kinna accompanied Churchill on each of his many overseas trips, which were not always comfortable: getting to Yalta, in Ukraine, for the February 1945 meeting with Stalin and Roosevelt, involved a six-hour drive from the airport along what Churchill called the riviera of Hades ; on the way back, Churchill asked to have his clothes deloused. The new car is the work of Capt. George Edward Thomas Eyston.. who aims to raise the record to around 350mph, and has chosen the make of engine that has figured in recent speed attempts of this nature on land and water and which is accepted as best for our control of the sky - Rolls-Royce". Powered by twin Rolls-Royce R-type V-12 aero engines, Captain Eyston, in competition with his English compatriot John Cobb, gradually pushed the limits of power and speed on the Bonneville Sand Flats in Utah in 1938 before setting a record of 357.5MPH- a record that would last until late 1939. The design of this model- without the stabilising fin and with an additional nose cone reflects the design of the car in 1939.

Giacomo Franchini (1827-1897), a rare and unusual Italian glass cane portrait tie pin, circa 1860 and later, set with a miniature portrait of the Italian statesman Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour (1810-1861) made from a single cross section of glass cane, within a glittering border, to a base metal pin with gilt metal stopper, cane 8.3mm diameter, total length 6.7cm, case Giacomo Franchini (1827-1897) was the son of a Venetian glass maker, who mastered the art of making incredibly intricate and lifelike portraits in the unforgiving medium of millefiori glass, particularly of major figures in Italian reunification, such as the present portrait of Cavour. Partly due to the obsessively detailed nature and small scale of his artistic output, Franchini's mental health deteriorated and he was confined to an asylum from 1863, where he remained for the rest of his life. Please see Giovanni Sarpellon, 'Miniature Masterpieces. Mosaic Glass 1838-1924', Munich 1995, pp. 70-90, for additional information on on Franchini's life and works.
Gillot & Co., a rare Art Deco gem-set and diamond brooch, circa 1920, the bar brooch channel-set with a line of rectangular step-cut emeralds, sapphires and diamonds, terminating in calibré-cut rubies, within an open work frame of stylised lotus motifs in the Egyptian taste, set with calibré-cut emeralds, rubies and sapphires, to an outer border of single-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, length 7.8cm, pin signed Gillot & Co. Inc. Paul Gillot (circa 1877-1949) was an important creative driving force in American jewellery at the start of the 20th century. In his native France he trained as a draughtsman, and his 1898 entry into a jewellery design competition caught the attention of jeweller and jewellery historian/critic Henri Vever, who praised the young designer in print for his talent. In 1902, he emigrated to New York and found employment at one of the most creative and prominent jewellers in America, Marcus & Co, whose doorman at the time would become an important American jeweller in his own right - Raymond Yard. Prized for his knowledge of pioneering Art Nouveau techniques such as plique-à-jour enamel, Gillot was an indispensable asset to these influential jewellers, and remained at Marcus & Co. for twelve years. Among his key commissions during this time was a gold laurel wreath crown, presented to the famed actress Sara Bernhardt when she performed in New York in 1913, now housed in the MFA Boston. Shortly afterwards, Gillot left Marcus & Co. to enlist in the French army in the First World War, but injury and sickness cut his service short. When Gillot returned to New York and resumed trading in 1916, now under his own name, Bernhardt, whose renowned jewellery collection contained superbly imaginative jewels designed by René Lalique and Alphonse Mucha, became one his key clients, to the extent that he was later described as having designed 'the major portion of Sarah Bernhardts's jewellery' by the Yonkers Statesman in 1927. Gillot is also said to have assembled an extraordinary collection of coloured diamonds, which briefly earned him the nickname 'the King of Diamonds', (a moniker later and more enduringly given to Harry Winston), and while his signed jewels are rare and seldom seen, when they do appear they are often set with stones of superb quality, reflecting his elite clientele and connoisseur's eye. The present brooch is no exception, set with a beautifully matched selection of step-cut sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamonds, arranged in a stylish Art Deco bar brooch designed with subtle accents of the fashionable Ancient Egyptian revival style, making it a perfect testament to the talent and elevated taste that this French jeweller contributed to American design at the start of the 20th century.
