The Gallant Ohio multiple signed WW2 Robert Taylor print. 32 x 23 inches. Numbered 33/850. During 1942 the small Mediterranean island of Malta was the most heavily bombed place on earth. In the space of two months, March and April, more bombs fell on Malta than on London during the entire Blitz. The Axis powers were determined to bomb the island into submission because, if they could capture Malta, the Mediterranean was theirs. But the garrison and people of Malta refused to submit, their only relief was through the convoys that ran the gauntlet to resupply the island. And none more so than the convoy of Operation Pedestal, a scenario of which is played out in Robert Taylor's panoramic painting, THE GALLANT OHIO. Unless the American tanker got through, the island's air defences were doomed. Spitfires of 126 and 185 Squadrons successfully fended off a last desperate attempt by enemy aircraft to sink the crippled American tanker Ohio, still some 80 miles short of the beleaguered island of Malta. Badly damaged and barely afloat the Ohio, assisted by Royal Navy destroyers Penn, (foreground), Bramham (lashed to Ohio's port side) and Ledbury, limped into port to a tumultuous welcome, on August 15, 1942. Her vital cargo of fuel kept the island's air defences alive, and ultimately made the island secure. Pedestal became the most heavily attacked convoy in history but, it got through and Malta was saved. The Signatures Joining artist Robert Taylor in signing each print in the edition as FIVE distinguished signatories, representing the Royal Navy, Fleet Air Arm, and the Royal Air Force, who fought for the Defence of Malta and the Malta Convoys. Lancaster Leonard Cheshire VC signed WW2 Robert Taylor print. 24 x 20 inches. This very early Robert Taylor image is a romantic study of the famous Lancaster bomber, mainstay of RAF Bomber Command during World War II. The prints appeared in two versions, each signed by a holder of the Victoria Cross, both of whom, in their own very different ways, stood as outstanding examples of the courageous men who flew with Bomber Command. One of those men was Leonard Cheshire, one of the most determined bomber leaders of the war who was awarded his Victoria Cross for over four years of continued and sustained bravery. When you read this extract from his citation it will help to understand why his signature is highly collectable: In four years of fighting against the bitterest opposition, he has maintained a record of outstanding personal achievement, placing himself invariably in the forefront of the battle. What he did in the Munich operation (an experimental raid carried out in April 1944 to test out a new method of target marking) was typical of the careful planning, brilliant execution and contempt for danger which has established for the Wing Commander a reputation second to none in Bomber Command. Because this is such an early print it is hard to find copies that are in mint condition, the colours on this as it has been rolled remaining fresh and vivid. Condition report fox marks borders and small 1/2 crease on LH & RH lower white border. Good Condition. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. FM Paul von Hindenburg signed 1925 document on his personal Generalfeldmarschall letterhead. Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg known simply as Paul von Hindenburg German general and statesman who commanded the Imperial German Army during World War I and later became President of Germany from 1925 until his death, during the Weimar Republic. He played a key role in the Nazi Machtergreifung in January 1933 when, under pressure from advisers, he appointed Adolf Hitler Chancellor of Germany even though the Nazis were a minority in both the cabinet and the Reichstag. Born to a family of minor Prussian nobility, Hindenburg joined the Prussian army in 1866 where he saw combat during the Austro Prussian and Franco Prussian wars. He retired with the rank of General of the Infantry in 1911, but was recalled to military service at the age of 66 following the outbreak of World War I in July 1914 and shortly thereafter received nationwide attention as the victor of the Battle of Tannenberg. Upon later being named Chief of the General Staff in 1916, his popularity among the German public dramatically increased and produced a large cult of personality. As Wilhelm II increasingly delegated his authority to the Army High Command, Hindenburg and his deputy, General Erich Ludendorff, established a de facto military dictatorship that controlled Germany for the rest of the war. Hindenburg retired again in 1919, but returned to public life in 1925 to be elected the second President of Germany. He defeated Hitler in a runoff to win re-election in 1932. He was opposed to Hitler and was a major player in the increasing political instability in the Weimar Republic that ended with Hitler's rise to power. He dissolved the Reichstag twice in 1932 and finally agreed to appoint Hitler Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. Hindenburg did this to satisfy Hitler's demands that he should play a part in the Weimar government, for Hitler was the leader of the Nazi party, which had won a plurality in the November 1932 elections. In February he approved the Reichstag Fire Decree, which suspended various civil liberties, and in March signed the Enabling Act of 1933, which gave Hitler's regime arbitrary powers. Hindenburg died the following year, after which Hitler declared himself Führer und Reichskanzler, or Supreme Leader and Chancellor, which superseded both the President and Chancellor. Good Condition. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. LULUWA TOBACCO MORTAR, 26cm high Note from Metropolitan Museum website: The Luluwa people live at the crossroads of several major art-producing cultures: the Luba to the east, the Chokwe to the southwest, and the Kuba to the north. In contrast to the more public prestige-enhancing royal arts of their powerful neighbours, the arts of the Luluwa in pre-colonial times were generally privately owned. Nonetheless, symbols of authority, such as ceremonial weapons, staffs of office and leopard-skin skirts, are seen on many of the figures. The hallmark of Luluwa sculpture is a profusion of intricate scarification patterns that adorn the surface, preserving in sculpture a form of body art abandoned over a century ago. Luluwa figures referred to ancestral spirits who bestowed protection, good fortune, and beauty on their devotees. During pregnancy and childbirth, women tucked the small half figures that end in a point into their wrappers or belts for protection; after the child was born, the standing figures were placed next to the baby's bed to keep the infant from harm. Small crouching figures, spectacularly poised as if in space, served as tobacco mortars, hemp containers, or amulets to be hung from hunters' belts. Provenance: Collection of Julien Harris (1910-2011) - see lot 1066.

Autograph letter on how to construct a bichromate battery for producing electric light, Rugby School, 20 May 1884, 6 pp., a few crude sketches, some light soiling and splits along folds, 8vo, with three other manuscripts: An autograph letter from Austrian emigre and auctioneer Alexander Cassano, 11 May 1808 in which he pleads against transportation to the colonies for letting his auction rooms in Piccadilly to a debating society; an archive of 28 autograph letters written mostly by statesman Lord Hartington to Manchester merchant William Rayner Wood on political meetings and elections for appointing Officers for the County of Lancashire (1850's-60's) and a manuscript deposition from plaintiff Elizabeth Wakefield against defendant Mary Ross for trespass and causing wilful damage to her house in Handsworth, West Midlands, circa 1828 (Qty: 6)NOTESThe first letter from Isaac Milner, mathematician and Dean of Carlisle, describes his chemical experiments to investigate whether water caused the oxidisation of lead, and discovered that it was in fact air, and describes experiments to produce a tincture of sulphur to identify lead in other substances, including wine; the second letter from Harry Seeley attacks Malet's rejection of Laplace's Nebular Hypothesis, "He mistakes the tools of the scientific man for science itself, and denies the tools to those who can use them, because he does not know or understand or appreciate the results which have thereby been obtained. Among such tools is the nebular hypothesis... Such writings of Mr. Malet's seems unwise, because it presents to the public the little one-sided knowledge which is dangerous and thereby tends to prevent people who believe in him from believing in the teachings of scientific men."; the third letter is from Reginald Harding, aged 13, writing at his father's behest to a Mr Hamel, detailing how to construct a bichromate battery in a long-neck bottle, with illustrations, and recommends the use of vacuum bulbs to produce electric light. The Rugby School notepaper has the name E.A. Scott (Edward Ashley Scott, Harding's house master) who perhaps assisted the young pupil with this information.
