A rare Chinese Qing dynasty Xianfeng period (1851-1861) 100 cash coin in bronze/brass Huang-tong 黃銅, Fujian province cast 1853-55 with 'Yong' chop mark to reverse top of rim an indistinct chop mark to the front rim and one faint chop to the edge of the coin. Total weight approx. 170 grams. Diameter 68mm. Condition overall good. Provenance: Gifted from the parents to the owner as a child in 1955 at the age of 11. With pray book and bible. George Louis Hunter was a native of Newcastle upon Tyne. During the Great war he first served with the KOYLI and was then transferred to the 15th Bn of the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was subsequently posted to the 3rd Bn of the London Regiment with who he was sadly killed in action with on 8th November 1918. He was laid to rest in Heath Cemetery, Harbonniers. Pair to 144874 DVR C V Hunter RA ( Condition VF) Charles Victor Hunter was the brother of George. He served with the Royal Artillery and was entitled to a pair only. He survived the war. Boxed WW2 Medals ( box ripped) to Mr G L Hunter, 39/45, Africa, Defence and War. Dog tag JX341599. George Louis Hunter was the son of Charles and the Nephew of George. He served in the Navy during WW2 and survived the war.

Drafted to work at Bletchley Park with Alan Turing into decoder room ( She called it 'the bomb') She only spoke openly about all this in her later life. She remembered Alan Turing walking around the lake with his his coffee in his hand which he never got around to drinking and would throw it and the cup into the lake.

WW2 MONTE CASINO CROSS GROUPING TO A MEMBER OF THE 5TH INFANTRY DIVISION An impressive grouping to Wilhelm Hitter who fought with the 5th Kresowa Infantry Division, 2nd Polish Corps during the battle. He was later transferred to the 55th. He was awarded the Monte Cassino Cross ( 26190) which comes with award card. Hitter also received a 5th Kresowa Infantry Division badge with award card. The group comes with a 1939/45 Star. Italy Star and Defence Medal. A number of reunion and commemorative anniversary badges are included along with some Italian badges and insignia. A Bronze hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1902 A Bronze hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1903 A Silver hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1905 A Silver Football Medal presented to Thewlis on 23rd November 1917, 'Hawke Bn Champions' Silver Fob ' Always Ready' 1919 Chirton Masonic Lodge medal to Bro Wm Thewlis. With brothers RND Silver Fob presented for winning a football match in France in 1918. The group comes with Williams original service papers and numerous other pieces of paper work relating to his life and his families. Such as apprenticeship documents and photographs. The group also comes with a large framed photograph of William. William Thewlis was born in Chirton, North Shields in January 1895. He attended Chirton School before going down the local pit as a Miner. During the Great War he enlisted in the Tyneside Division (TZ), Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, joining in June 1915. He became a Member of Hawke Bn Royal Naval Division RND. Thewlis first served in Imbros, before transferring to France in mid-1916. He was badly wounded to his left shoulder on 13th November 1916. The wound was so bad he didn't re-join his Bn until May 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal announced in the London Gazette on 24th September 1918 and the Bar on 15th January 1919. He was gassed during the German Spring Offensive in March 1918 and re-joined the Bn in August 1918.

My father Group Captain William Eric Clifford-Jones received the medal for his work at the St Johns Moutashbah hospital which was located in No-mans land between Jordan and Israel prior to the 6 day war in 1967. (3)mounted but unframedFootnotes:Thakur Ganga Singh began his career as an artist in the Forest Research Institute in Dehra Dun, travelling to England in 1931 to train at the Slade in London. These botanical watercolours continue a tradition of flower painting combining elegant decoration with botanical accuracy. The watercolour studies were commissioned by Maharajah Yadhavindra Singh of Patiala, a keen botanist who from the 1920s began to collect the flora of the Simla Hills with the intention of writing a book on the subject. Ganga Singh was engaged by the Maharajah in 1942 and painted over four hundred watercolours over a twenty year period. IRAQ - MESOPOTAMIA, ASHUR AND GERTRUDE BELLAlbum of 125 photographs (mostly gelatin silver prints on photo cards) relating to the German archaeological survey at Ashur, and Mesopotamia including a visit by Gertrude Bell, probably compiled by a member of the team, approximately 25 with pencil annotations written in German on the verso (a few identifying the photographer as either Walter Bachmann, or Walter Bachmann), 3 inscribed in ink probably by the compiler of the collection (see footnote); and 7 others of Venice, all loose mounted in album, images approximately 90 x 140mm., [c.1909-1911]Footnotes:Rare series of photographs taken by members of the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft, during the German archaeological survey carried out at Ashur, the ancient capital of Assyria on the Tigris River, under the leadership of Walter Andrae. Images include identifiable members of the archaeological team (including Andrae, Conrad Preusser, Paul Maresch, Walter Hinrichs, and Walter Bachmann, the last two identified as photographers of some of the images), in formal and informal groups, on site, on horseback, wading through a river and with local dignitaries. These include Gertrude Bell, shown in four images (2 half-length seated outside; 2 with German colleagues), who visited Ashur in 1909 and 1911 witnessing the 'cutting-edge excavations... [and] systems of archaeological recording... which would inform her own seminal work' (Paul Collins, Gertrude Bell and Iraq: A Life and Legacy, 2013). Other images includes views of archaeological sites, surrounding landscapes, and local inhabitants. It is probable that the collection was formed by a member of the German team (Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft), the as yet unidentified sitter in one portrait. Augustus Osborne Lamplough, A.R.A., R.W.S (British, 1877-1930)The Great Temple at Abu Simbel, Egypt signed and indistinctly dated 'A Lamplough 19--'watercolour63.5 x 94cm (25 x 37in).Footnotes:The present watercolour depicts the Great Temple at Abu Simbel. Both this and The Small Temple being built over 3,200 years ago by Ramesses II as monuments to himself and his queen, Nefertari. For centuries the temples were seemingly forgotten and covered with sand until their rediscovery by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (1784-1817) in 1813. It is said that 'Abu Simbel' was the name of the local boy who guided the first re-discoverers to the site, and later this was the name given to the complex.When the construction of the Aswan Dam began in 1960, it became apparent that the ancient temples would soon be submerged and destroyed by the rising waters of the newly created Lake Nasser. An international fund-raising campaign by UNESCO led to their relocation to higher ground - a highly complex and costly process that was finally completed in 1968. Thus, the present lot shows the original location of the Abu Simbel temples.Lamplough travelled extensively through Europe, Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa, producing a large number of watercolours documenting these journeys.
