Gladstone and Disraeli: an impressive pair of pottery figures by Whitman and Roth each depicted in characteristic standing pose and wearing top hats, Disraeli with hand on hip, Gladstone holding an umbrella and bag, decorated in underglaze colours, on square bases moulded with makers lozenge shaped mark, registration mark for 8th December 1876 and inscribed 'Copyright', Disraeli 419mm high, rear part of carrying handle of bag missing and small chip to foot of Gladstone figure (2) * In the general election of February 1874 the Conservatives under Disraeli won a resounding victory over Gladstone and the Liberals. In 1876 Queen Victoria bestowed the titles of Earl of Beaconsfield and Viscount Hughenden upon Disraeli who remained Prime Minister until defeated by the Liberals in the general election of 1880 when Gladstone again became Prime Minister having been leader of the opposition in the interim.

Krasnoff came to Malta as a refugee in 1919. He was a watercolour artist of great accomplishment. Princess Nathalie Poutintine wrote of him: "Nicholas Krasnoff was a well-known and talented artist; he had designed the beautiful new palace for the Imperial Family in Yalta. He was asked to give me lessons so as not to interrupt the tuition I was receiving in that art in Russia and for which I had an aptitude. I did greatly enjoy his lessons, sitting under a shady arch of military buildings in open air overlooking the blue sea. He explained to me the importance of light and shade and its techniques in watercolour. He found the light on the Malta stone most effective against the deep cobalt blue of the sea and sky. Puffing his pipe he always spoke to me of the pure colours, which had to be used without hesitation on the paper, and never to be retouched again, having first well understood their mutual effects in life around us. I greatly enjoyed these hours immersed in natural loveliness I was to reproduce."

PHILLIPE DE HONDT (FLEMISH 1683-1741) LA MARCHE Oil on canvas 110cm x 140cm (43.25in x 55.25in) Note: This painting offers a fascinating insight into the tapestry industry in Belgium in the early eighteenth century. It is in fact a cartoon, a preparatory work for for the purposes of copying and transferring the design into a tapestry, in this case a series of eight, altogether known as the Art of War tapestries. It was created between 1715 and 1720 for the use of Brussels' largest tapestry workshop at the time, that of Judocus de Vos. The series of the Art of War were a popular set of tapestries to be commissioned by local rulers who furnished their seats with these reminders of their military triumphs and prowess. Thirteen sets of this series are known to have been woven, all in the 'basse-lisse', or low warp weaving, also known as Gobelin, where the weaver employed a cartoon which was painted in the reverse. Many of these sets have been dispersed but one survives complete and today hangs at Schloss Schleissheim, north of Munich, complete with a tapestry of La Marche.
CHARLES EDMUND BROCK (BRITISH 1870-1938) A FAMILY PORTRAIT OF ELIZABETH, THE QUEEN MOTHER AND HER DAUGHTERS PRINCESS ELIZABE th and Princess Margaret, Signed and dated 1936, oil on canvas 132cm x 104cm (52in x 41in) Exhibited: The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 4th August, 1980, the formal part of a Tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Harrods, London, on the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's 100th birthday. New Burlington Galleries, London Note: This beautifully observed group portrait of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and her daughters, Princess Margaret Rose and Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II, is a fine example of the work of Edmond Brock. The son of sculptor Sir Thomas Brock, who built the Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace, Edmond rose to prominence through his talent for portraiture. His reputation travelled across the Atlantic and he crossed over to America several times to paint sitters such as the Countess of Granard, Ogden Mills and Marshall Field. In England, his sitters included the Earl of Dalkeith, Viscountess Castlereagh and the children of numerous members of high society. He painted several portraits of Princess Elizabeth before her eighth birthday and went on to paint several others of her sister Princess Margaret. In a letter to the artist from 1952, Elizabeth II acknowledges that her father, King George VI, held the portraits of her and her sister in very high esteem and always had one in his sitting room at Buckingham Palace. Uniquely, a letter from Her Majesty, the Queen Mother commissioning this work survives and will be sold with this painting. Following the portraits he painted of Princess Elizabeth, Brock was in correspondence with the Queen regarding a portrait of her younger daughter, Princess Margaret, three years old at the time, when the Queen requested that a group portrait be painted of her with her two daughters. They sat for the portrait in the artist's studio in Piccadilly and Brock is said to have painted several versions of the oil before being satisfied with the result. He destroyed five or six versions which he considered unsuccessful. From correspondence we know that the princesses, even at such a young age, remembered the visits to the studio, and having to pass messages to the artist in sign language as he was rather hard of hearing. Brock must have had a particularly kind and engaging manner as it must have been difficult to persuade children to sit still long enough for him to paint them. In his composition Brock refers to the enduring English tradition of group portraiture, whilst also nodding to Renaissance art, and even Leonardo's seminal The Virgin, and child with St Anne now in the Louvre. The composition is a solid pyramid with the head of the Queen Mother at its apex and her dress and Princess Elizabeth forming the base. Precedents of this subject include Sir Joshua Reynolds' Charlotte Grenville and her children in the National Museum of Wales and .Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun's Queen Marie-Antoinette and Her Children, currently at the Chateau de Versailles. In the relaxed poses of the princesses seated by their mother and the natural outdoor setting of the sitters, this portrait is much more informal than these earlier examples. Princess Margaret has wrapped her arms around her mother playfully, whilst Princess Elizabeth is seen in profile, holding her mother's right hand and gazing out of the frame. The older daughter's more pensive mood and her relationship with her mother indirectly implies the responsibility and power which are to be invested in her in later life. The right hand of the Queen Mother almost seems to hand down power to the right hand of the seated princess.

Godwin (1833-1886): An Anglo-Japanese taste walnut table, with folding shelves, gilt brass fittings, probably made by Collinson and Lock, circa 1872-5, 74.7cm (29.5ins) high, 81.5cm (32ins) wide (open), 40.6cm (16ins) deep. Condition report available on request.. Literature: Susan Weber Soros; The Secular Furniture of E.W.Godwin, Yale 1999, p.146 pl. 211, Jeremy Cooper, Victorian and Edwardian Furniture and Interiors, London 1987, pl. 326, Godwin sketchbooks, Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In her book, Susan Soros illustrates a sketch by Godwin for a table with folding shelves from the V & A archives (V & A PD E.255-1963, fol 21) and offers the following footnote to her illustration on p.146 pl 211. ‘This table is one of the most overtly Anglo-Japanese pieces in Godwin’s oeuvre. Nancy Wilkinson has identified drawings in Godwin’s sketchbooks of Japanese tansu (V & A PD E.280-1963, fol. 5) taken from Aime Humbert’s Le Japon illustre (1870) that show similar features, confirming Godwin’s awareness of these forms when he designed the table. The folding shelves seem to be a Godwin adaption, taken from late-eighteenth century Sheraton flap tables, since there is no precedent in Japanese furniture forms’. Similar examples are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, National Trust, Ellen Terry Memorial Museum, Smallhythe Place, Kent and are sometimes referred to as ‘Smallhythe’ tables. Dame Ellen Terry, the Shakespearean actress who lived with Godwin between1868-75 owned a similar table.. In recent years, two examples have been sold at auction, with Simon Chorley, Southam, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire,November 30th 2006 and Sothebys London, The Best of British Design from the 19th and 20th Centuries-Paul Reeves: The Auction, 20th March 2008 Lot 38. Here Sothebys suggested that a total of six ‘Smallhythe’ tables are known to exist.. Clocks & Scientific Instruments

Provenance: Bookplates of Sir David Salomons, Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells in each volume. A financier by profession, Sir David Salomons was heavily engaged in public affairs. In 1839 he was Sheriff of the County of Kent, and in 1855 he became the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London, when he became the chief protagonist in the battle to secure for his people - Jews and others such as Roman Catholics and Quakers - the political rights enjoyed by other Englishmen. It was he who opened the campaign in public, fought out the issues in court, and laid himself open to considerable penalties, entering and speaking for his cause in Parliament. Note: Issued over a period of twenty five years and in very small numbers being limited to those who were able to attend the Club dinners, the Garlands are amongst the rarest of the Club's productions. Complete sets are therefore of even greater rarity. Scott took a leading role in establishing the Club and was its founding president, presiding until his death. Scott composed a song for its first dinner, 9 March 1823, which was issued as the first of the Garlands. He was also involved in the publication of the joint issue of two Garlands as Two Bannatyne garlands from Abbotsford. All but the last in the series were original works and in most cases were issued in no more than 40 copies. The other works in the collection are also scarce.
[Garfield, James, President of the U.S.A.]--Stanley-Brown, Joseph Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs. Riddle, discussing the condition of President Garfield following his shooting and the admirable behaviour of Mrs Garfield, 8 pages, 4to, Executive Mansion, Washington D.C., 3 August 1881, approximately 35mm at the left margin bleached and rendered brittle by sun exposure, with some resultant loss of text Note: "...storm clouds, thick and black, have once more gathered over our President..." Stanley-Brown was Garfield's private secretary, and later married his daughter Mollie. He was an eyewitness to the 80 painful days that elapsed between the assassination attempt and Garfield's death. He here writes optimistically that the President, who had been shot on 2 July, "is again slowly climbing up the hill toward recovery", despite a recent setback which brought back the "sickening sensation of the first few days". Stanley-Brown writes warmly of the "calm heroism" of Garfield's wife: he extols her optimism and good cheer, despite the tremendous pressure of having rushed back to Washington on hearing that her husband had been shot, and "reaching home to be surrounded by friends whose faces and voices but too plainly betrayed the doubts and fears which crowded their minds".

Robert Coulthard, R.A.F., who was shot down off the Mole at Zeebrugge. His parents were advised of his death, but a newspaper clipping reports that he was later reported prisoner. No. 2 Squadron RNAS was renumbered No. 202 Squadron on 1 April 1918 and flew reconnaissance, bombing and escort sorties.
Rodger, Thomas, photographer The Kingdom of Fife, calotyped by Thomas Rodger, St. Andrews. Edinburgh: James Inglis, and Cupar-Fife: John Cunningham Orr, small folio, division 2 only, 12 lithographed plates after calotypes, most with tissue guards, original green cloth gilt, gilt edges, gutta-percha perished, rubbed at head of spine Note:Thomas Rodger set up one of the earliest commercial photographic studios in the country in St Andrews in 1849. He was born in St Andrews, son of Thomas Rodger (d 1876), journeyman painter in St Andrews. While apprenticed to a chemist and druggist in the town he assisted in the Chemistry Room of the United College where he became a protegée of Dr John Adamson. (Dr John Adamson of St Andrews, with his brother, Robert Adamson and David Octavius Hill, was one of the pioneers of early photography). Thomas was introduced to those experimenting in early photography around 1840 and was invited, on the recommendation of John Adamson, to assist Lord Kinnaird in his calotype studio at Rossie Priory. Thereafter he attended the Andersonian College of Glasgow for two sessions but was diverted from his medical studies by Dr John Adamson who urged his boy assistant to carry on his photographic experiments and set up business as a professional photographer, which he did in 1849, in his studio in St Mary's Place, Market Street Rare. Only three copies recorded on KVK: British Library (in 2 parts), National Library of Scotland (3 parts) and Glasgow.
Stevenson, Robert Louis - Speculative Society Small photograph album belonging to Charles Baxter, c.1872, containing carte-de-visite of Robert Glasgow Brown, Charles Gordon [signed in ink below], Walter Grindley Simpson, three photographs of Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Henley & Charles Baxter, friends together from the Speculative Society, contemporary morocco with brass clasp; Stevenson, Robert Louis Kidnapped. London, 1907. Pocket edition, 8vo, author's signature clipped from letter and pasted to front free endpaper, folding map, original cloth (2) Note: Robert Louis Stevenson and Charles Baxter met while Stevenson was still at university. Both members of the Speculative Society and cofounders of the short-lived L.J.R. Baxter was Stevenson's crony in the tempestuous university and post-university days when the latter, in fairly regular conflict with his bewildered parents, was trying to find himself as man and writer. On Stevenson's exiguous allowance of ten shillings a week the two frequented pubs, and less decorous places, in the grimier streets of Edinburgh, acquiring a stock of memories which lasted them the rest of their lives. Stevenson's most famous work, KIdnapped, was dedicated to Baxter in 1886, "If it is stranger for me to look back fropm a distance both in time and space on these bygone adventures of our youth, it must be stranger for you who tread the same streets - who may tomorrow open the door to the old Speculative... or may pass the corner of the close where that great society, the L.J.R., held its meetings and drank its beer..." The others characters shown in the album include Robert Glasgow Brown, a friend from the Speculative Society and co-founder of the Edinburgh University Magazine; Walter Grindley Simpson, the friend who accompanied Stevenson on his a canoeing trip along the River Oise through France and Belgium accounted in An inland voyage (1876); Walter Henley, the poet, essayist and editor who collaborated with Stevenson on various dramatic works including Deacon Brodie.

Brook, 1671, 4to, frontispiece, engraved plate and full-page engravings in the text, woodcuts in the text, 4 advertisement leaves and "Peroratio" leaf at end, fine period style half calf with marbled sides, frontispiece and title supplied in very good facsimile on period paper, neat repairs to two preliminary leaves, occasional dampstains to some outer margins Note: Wing S755 Richard Saunders (1613-1687?), a native of Warwickshire, studied hermeneutics about 1647 and practised astrology and chiromancy during the golden age of the pseudo-sciences in England. He was a close friend of the antiquary Elias Ashmole and the astrologer William Lilly who contributes a commendatory note to this work and there are several laudatory poems prefacing the text.

ITALY V. ENGLAND 16/5/48: a Marrola brown leather football used in the 1948 International match, the ball autographed by both teams, some faded; and various Italian newspaper cuttings relating to the ball. The above ball was used in the 1948 International match between Italy and England. In the match played on 16th May in Turin, England defeated Italy 4-0. The signatures on the ball also include members of the Torino side who perished in a plane crash in 1949.

THE MEDALS, UNIFORM AND FULL HISTORY OF Sgt F A Jones 4/2 Battalion 1942 - 1946 The Cameron Highlanders, includes War Medal and Star, Italy Star and Defence Medal (ribbons are our replacements) together with miniatures. 1940 Pattern BD Blouse badged to 6th Armoured Division together with Balmoral Bonnet complete with original Badge and Tartan backing. Divisional Badge/Tartan Epaulettes to both 6th & 4th Indian Division together with photos, release book, pay book, dog tags etc. Sgt Jones was in action in Italy with the 4th Indian Division until wounded near Cassino. He has compiled his full service history and diary into an illustrated booklet which comes with the lot. An extract:- ".....a voice declared "Englander". I opened fire through the door and commotion and shouts came through the door. I changed magazines and gave another burst, trying for the lock. I still couldn't get in the door and went back to the side of the house to consult McLaren, who was still holding the two prisoners. Suddenly a figure appeared, having jumped from an upstairs window. As he landed, he opened fire at the same time as I did. He hit me in the thigh and I dropped to the ground. I killed him, but not before he had hit Jimmy McLaren in the body, who also fell to the ground. He also hit one of his own men. Lt. Ellis with the rest of the Platoon then appeared, and eventually blew in the door with a 36 grenade. This ended the attack on the farmhouse" Now in his late 80's, Mr Jones lives in Somerset
Poster, GWR 'Speed To The West', Q/R. Produced for the Great Western Railway to promote the company’s speedy services to the West of England. The poster shows a 'King' class locomotive on a holiday train for the West Country. Artwork by Charles Mayo, who worked in the GWR publicity department. Some loss and a number of repairs to the rear, carried out recently with 'magic' tape which could be removed and the poster mounted to preserve. Despite the damage, this is one of the most evocative railway posters ever produced.
Nameplate SIR DURNORE, ex SR King Arthur Class 4-6-0 Locomotive. Built Eastleigh in October 1926 by the Southern Railway to Maunsell design and numbered 802, later 30802 by British Railways. Allocations include Ashford and Stewarts Lane. Withdrawn in July 1961. Sir Durnore was thought to be the alternative spelling of Sir Dornard who was son of King Pellinore, brother of Agglovale, Lamorak, Percival and Torre.
GWR Hand Written Note Books, qty 2, written in 1942 by Chief Inspector Gillett, a notable and well known railway gentleman who worked in the Birmingham District detailing Engine Numbers and Drivers from Tyseley on specific workings with timings. Local trains only but extremely interesting. Locos include, many times in fact, 5152, 4108, 5166, 5177, 5199, 8109, 5193, 4939, 5102 etc. Most runs are Moor Street through to Stratford with all stations listed with timings. A couple of gems.

A 9ct. gold and enamel Football League Division Three Championship medal season 1981-82, inscribed FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP, DIVISION 3 WINNERS, SEASON 1981-82, in original fitted case. Burnley won the Division Three title in 1981-82 with a total of 80 points beating Carlisle, who also accumulated 80 points, on goal difference.
A silver-gilt Inter-League medal 1971-72, inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, REPRESENTATIVE MATCH, THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE VERSUS THE SCOTTISH LEAGUE AT MIDDLESBROUGH, 15TH MARCH 1972, in original case; sold together with an official itinerary for the match (2). This medal was awarded to the medical officer in attendance at the match, Dr. Neil Phillips, who was also the England doctor.
A red Norway No.14 international substitute’s jersey, short-sleeved. This jersey relates to the 1982 World Cup qualifier played at Wembley on 10th September 1980. Phil Neal did not start in this match so it can be presumed that he swapped shirts from the bench with a Norwegian substitute who did not get a game.
A rare and unusual 19th century Australian football trophy, in the form of a Victorian silver two-handled trophy cup and cover by Frederick Ellington, Birmingham 1885, of tapering shape, with pierced handles and floral cartouches, inscribed to one side THE STEWART FOOTBALL TROPHY, the other side inscribed PRESENTED BY JAMES STEWART & CO. ROCKHAMPTON, WON BY SCOTTISH RIFLES FOOTBALL CLUB 1887, MOUNT MORGAN 1888, MOUNT MORGAN 1889, the cover with similar decoration, the finial modelled as a footballer, height 53.5cm., 21in.; together with an engraved plaque presumably removed from the trophy plinth, inscribed WON BY MOUNT MORGAN, 1899, PRESENTED TO J.WESLEY HALL, ESQ., PRESIDENT (2). James Stewart who provided this trophy was a prominent businessman from Rockhampton in central Queensland, Australia, who ran a wholesaling and retailing business which he grew from a one room operation into a national brand with several branches of his stores. At the John Oxley Library, the State Library of Queensland, there is a team-group photograph in their archive titled Mount Morgan Football Club, Winners of the Stewart Trophy, 1888-89 season. The other winners engraved on the trophy are presumably the [Queensland] Scottish Rifles regiment. From the separate engraved plaque it is evident that Mount Morgan FC won the Stewart Trophy for a third time in succession in 1890. In the tradition of challenge trophies, it would appear that Mr James Stewart then presented the cup for the club to keep.
A red No.4 Common Market Football Match jersey worn by Horst Blankenburg, long-sleeved, inscribed FANFARE FOR EUROPE, 6, 9, WEMBLEY, 1973; sold with an official itinerary for the match (2). This match was held at Wembley on 3rd January 1973 to celebrate the enlargement of the Common Market from six to nine. The teams comprised of players from the existing six member states and the three new members. This jersey is from the ‘Six’ team and was worn by West Germany’s Horst Blankenburg who was playing his club football at Ajax at this time. the ‘Three’ consisting of players from the U.K., Eire and Denmark won the game 2-0.
Jimmy Gordon: a blue Scotland v. England shirt worn in the international match played at Stamford Bridge 5th April 1913, with button-up collar and embroidered cloth badge, inscribed SvE, 1913 In the above match, England defeated Scotland 1-0. The above shirt was worn by the Rangers and Scotland right-half Jimmy Gordon, who between 1912 and 1920 played 10 times for Scotland at full International level. He also made 14 appearances for the Scottish League and whilst at Rangers won 5 Championship medals. He was born on 23rd July 1888 and died on 22nd November 1954
Stevie Chalmers: a green & white hooped Celtic jersey, short-sleeved, the collar inscribed S.C. Stevie Chalmers is best remembered as the centre-forward who scored the winning goal for Celtic in the 1967 European Cup final v Inter. This is Chalmers shirt from the Lisbon Lions last match played against Clyde on 1st May 1971. Celtic won 6-1. This game marked the end of Celtic careers for several players including Chalmers who moved to Morton.
