Taxidermy: A Cased Re-creation of a Yellow Kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus), modern, a superbly composed re-creation of a very rare and unusual Yellow Kākāpō, the adult stood upon a fallen tree trunk, over looking her young chick nestled below within a ground nest, amidst a natural setting of tall grasses and fauna, set above painted soil covered groundwork beneath, enclosed within a large five-glass wooden framed table display case, 65.5cm by 37cm by 55.5cm, The original specimen bird became part of the important nineteenth-century New Zealand ornithologist Walter Lawry Buller's collection, the Kākāpō is one of the rarest birds in the World, with only 201 living specimens known as of 2021, a Yellow Kākāpō is known to have occurred only once, captured near Cromarty, Fiordland of New Zealand in 1898 and purchased for Buller's son, who considered it "the most beautiful thing in the bird line that i have ever seen", this example was created using various donor specimens including Common Buzzard tail feathers. With Cites Article 10 (non transferable) licence no. 349180/04 - Buzzard Tail Feathers used.In 1871, 310 bird specimens were purchased by the Colonial Museum, Wellington, from the important nineteenth-century New Zealand ornithologist Walter Lawry Buller. This was the first large and representative collection of New Zealand birds obtained by the national museum, and it originally included type specimens of 11 species and 23 specimens of birds that are now extinct. Most of this collection (77%) was lost or destroyed in the nineteenth century, and today only 70 of the specimens have been located, with none having the locality and date of collection on the original label. Professional jealousy and a desire to conceal his sources may have been one reason for Buller’s failure to label his specimens at the start of his career, although laxity in recording specimen data was prevalent in New Zealand at the time. Subsequently, the museum was unable to care for these specimens properly, mainly owing to inadequate provision by the government for the museum and its collections. This contrasts with the professional care given to Buller’s later collections of New Zealand birds by Rothschild’s private museum in England, the American Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The latter two museums each have over 500 New Zealand bird specimens from Walter Buller, and these collections are well documented and still largely intact. Together they provide a precious record of the decline of most New Zealand endemic bird species during the late nineteenth century, which resulted from the introduction of mammalian predators. In this paper, Buller’s collections are used to document the decline and extinction of endemic New Zealand birds. Analysis of the ‘Second’ and ‘Third’ Buller collections showed a decline in the proportion of juveniles of extinct and threatened birds, which may indicate that predation of nests and young, rather than of adults, was a key step in the demise of many New Zealand mainland species. Buller’s assertion that he built up three separate collections of New Zealand birds is shown to be incorrect. Each of these three ‘collections’ was selected from Buller’s own collection, which was not fully disposed of until his death. The number of specimens collected was relatively small, and no evidence was found of Buller’s personal collecting, or collecting on his behalf, significantly impacting on any New Zealand bird species. Nor did Buller profit greatly from the sales of his bird collections. Tail feathers used from a Common Buzzard - This specimen would require a re-export licence to export from the UK, an import permit would be required into your chosen country, this is the responsibility of the buyer alone, Tennants Auctioneers do not offer any onward re-export or import licences.

Wilson (Sir Angus, novelist and biographer, 1913-91) Autograph Letter signed to Patrick [Wilkinson], 2pp., 8vo, Reading Room, British Museum, 12th September 1950, introducing an American writer, Drew Greene, who had been commissioned to write a biography of Virginia Woolf, "I feel very much that the more help he can be given, the less improbable the whole period will seem to him. If you think you could get [E.M.] Forster to meet him for a short while, it would be very kind - he has, I believe, met him casually. In any case, Cambridge and much of English life would seem to be a mystery to him and even a picture of the King's background would be of great value", folds.

Birt, [1829].⁂ "At an early hour yesterday morning, a report was circulated...that a man named Richard Lambourn had murdered his wife, who was living servant at Mr. Davidson's the landlord of the Yorkshire Grey Inn, at the foot of Blackheath Hill...Richard Lambourn, the husband...was discovered lying beside his wife, and who, it seemed, after having murdered her, attempted to destroy himself...now in Guy's Hospital, but when sufficiently recovered from the effects of the wound in his throat, will be committed to Maidstone Gaol...". Medicine.- Lee (Samuel) A Narrative of some Proceedings in the Management of Chelsea Hospital, as far as relates to the Appointment and Dismission..., first edition, woodcut ornaments and initials, light spotting, modern marbled boards, [Not in Wellcome], W.Owen, 1753 § Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Report on Examination of Medical Practitioners, only edition, with manuscript leaf by F.H.Davidson President of the Royal College tipped in facing title, ex-library copy with ink stamp to verso, modern cloth-backed boards, uncut, [Not in Wellcome], Edinburgh, 1833 § Roux (Philibert Joseph) A Narrative of a Journey to London, in 1814; or, a Parallel of the English and French Surgery; preceded by some Observations on the London Hospitals, first edition in English, lacking half-title, ex-library copy with old ink stamp to verso of title and label, contemporary half calf, rebacked, [Wellcome IV.568], 1816 § Cleland (Henry Wilson) On the History and Properties Chemical and Medical of Tobacco...presented to the Faculty of Physicians & Surgeons Glasgow, first edition, lithographed title, dedication, plate from de Bry with accompanying quotation, the last two on india paper and mounted all a little foxed, handsome contemporary green morocco with elaborate gilt border, spine gilt, g.e., glazed endpapers with lattice in green & gold, gilt turn-ins, a little rubbed at edges, [Arents 1424; Wellcome II.357], Glasgow, 1840; and 2 others on medicine and hospitals, 8vo & 4to (6)⁂ The first item is an account of the controversial dismissal of Samuel Lee, a surgeon who claimed great success in the treatment of ruptures. Lee was judged a quack by his colleagues at Chelsea Hospital, most notably William Cheselden, widely regarded as one of the greatest surgeons of his day, who refused to acknowledge the efficacy of Lee's procedures, for which he was receiving large amounts of government money. This pamphlet was published in Lee's defence, and it seems probable that he wrote it himself. Though one-sided, it provides a good view of the workings of hospital administration in the mid-18th century. The second is a comprehensive review of the management and governance of the Royal College together with considerable detail on the fee structure, examinations and awards, and its relationship with the other medical professions (i.e. surgeons and apothecaries).

Levant.- Case (The) of the Governor and Company of Merchants of England Trading to the Levant Seas, 4pp., [?1753] bound with Historical View (An) of the Conduct and Proceedings of the Turky Company,12pp., [1753] and Bill (A) for Enlarging and Regulating the Trade into the Levant Seas, 8pp., issue with "prenticeships" to p.1., [1740], together 3 works in 1 vol., all with drop-head titles to first leaves and docket titles to last, the second with contemporary manuscript note "2d Reading of the Turkey Bill is Tuesday the 13.th March", modern cloth, folio, n.p.⁂ In the first item the Levant (or Turkey) Company is responding to the proposed legislation then before Parliament and which was enacted in 1754 as An Act for enlarging and regulating the trade into the Levant seas. The Levant Company "had never been an exclusive or oppressive monopoly such as the East India or Greenland Company was, but on the contrary was based on the assertion of the inestimable liberty of trade. Every merchant who could pay the required entrance fee was of right admitted a member, and was then entitled to trade on his own account". [Palgrave III, p.595]. The 1754 Act opened up the trade even further, all English merchants paying £20 for admission to its rights and privileges.

Crime & Police.- Foot (John) An Appeal to the Public, touching the Death of Mr. George Clarke, who received a Blow at Brentford...of which he languished and Died..., third edition, old ink inscription "Written by John Horne Tooke. C.J." at head of title, light spotting, modern calf-backed marbled boards, red roan label, [Wellcome III.39], R.Davis, 1769 § House of Commons. Report from the Committee on the State of the Police of the Metropolis..., original printed blue wrappers, uncut, rebacked and upper cover laid down, 1819; and another on London police, 8vo & folio (3)⁂ Although John Horne [Tooke]'s authorship of the first is open to question, it is certain that Horne was closely involved in the case. In 1768 he was intimately engaged with the return of Wilkes from the Continent and the famous Middlesex election. Horne had promoted the prosecution of Edward Quirk who, during a riot at the next election at Brentford (8 Dec. 1768), had killed a man, one George Clarke, by a blow to the head with a bludgeon. The Brentford killing is notable as a modest medico-legal cause célèbre. John Foot, a London surgeon, was professionally insulted when the convicted killer - largely convicted on Foot's own professional evidence of the medical results of the blow to the victim's head - had his conviction quashed by royal warrant on the grounds that death could have been caused by a previous medical condition unrelated to the blow. Foot's Appeal describes in detail his medical findings, including his examination of the skull and the brain, relates his evidence at the Old Bailey trial and his examination by a Court of Examining Surgeons at Surgeons Hall, and his anger at the verdict which challenged his professional integrity.
