*MARY JEWELS (1886-1977) 'The Fisherman's Virgin' titled verso, oil on canvas, 60cm x 40cm. Born in Newlyn on 5 February 1886, and married to Albert Owen Jewels who died in WWI, Mary Jewels preferred to be known as a natural painter rather than primitive or naïve. She mainly painted in oils, her subjects being landscapes, portraits, fishing, and harbour scenes. She was a close friend of Dod Procter, and her sister, Cordelia was married to the sculptor Frank Dobson. Her subjects remained truly Cornish, as she did not travel further afield. She considered herself to be a Newlyn painter, though little interest was shown in her work and St Ives was more welcoming, she first exhibited in London in 1928, persuaded to do so by Augustus John who was a family friend. Whybrow comments 'Mary was involved with both the early and later Newlyn school of painters. She lived so long that she spanned the generations. John Wells, on looking at her painting Cornfields with Peasants, dubbed her the English Van Gogh.' Reviewers continue to remark that she had interesting talents although has been largely overlooked amongst those who continue to focus on Alfred Wallis as 'the naïve' treasure. It has been suggested by Canney, in his Newlyn Notebook, that at her best, Jewels may well have influenced Christopher Wood of whom both she and her sister 'Delia' were very fond. A Solo exhibition of her work was held in Newlyn 1977, the same year in which she died. Provenance: This small group of works were acquired from Cordelia Dobson, the Artist's sister. A note supplied by the current vendor reads "This painting was bought from Mary Jewels' sister, Cordelia Dobson, by my mother and father-in-law - Stella and Fred Waygood in the 1970s. My mother had been evacuated to Cornwall and stayed with the sisters at Vine Cottage in Newlyn. She remained in touch with them and visited many times in the intervening years. The paintings were bought in memory of Mary Jewels after her death and to help Cordelia with repairs to the cottage that she and her sister had shared."

WALTER RICHARD SICKERT (1860-1942) 'Study for The New Home' c. 1908, oil on canvas, 34.5cm x 24cm . Provenance: Formerly the property of Vanessa Bell (1879-1961). Then Angelica Garnett (1918-2012) . Sold Christies, 21st November 1969, lot 92 (titled ‘Seated Girl’). Anthony d’Offay, London. Sold Sotheby’s, 14th November 1984, lot 40 (titled ‘Study for The New Home’) Private Collection, Wiltshire.Literature: Wendy Baron ‘Sickert, Paintings & Drawings’ p.369, catalogue number 350.2, listed as ‘Coster Girl by a Fireplace’, Yale University Press, 2006.The title of this work is borrowed from the larger painting, first exhibited by Sickert at the New English Art Club in the summer of 1908 as ‘The New Home’, a painting that was the key work in a sequence featuring the ‘two divine coster girls’ whom Sickert described in a letter written early in 1908 to his friend, the American-born painter, Anna Hope (Nan) Hudson,. As Sickert told Miss Hudson, his models were dressed “in the sumptuous poverty of their class, sham velvet &c. They always wearing for everyday dirty, old, worn clothes, but Sunday clothes. Extraordinary lives. Men, who live on them, now & again hitting them with ‘ammers, putting poisonous powders on cakes, trying to cut their throats, drugging their whisky &c.”. The two models were usually painted separately, the ‘New Home’ model with a round face, while the model in the in the misleadingly titled L’Americaine (Tate) has a slimmer face. The painting offered here, along with another small oil sketch of the two Coster girls together, has an interesting history. The Bloomsbury artist Vanessa Bell discovered them in Sickert’s old studio at 8 Fitzroy Street after Duncan Grant had moved into the space in 1920. Presumably, she told Sickert about her find and he – ever careless about the after life of his paintings – told her to keep them. The paintings were inherited by Angelica Garnett, Vanessa Bell’s daughter, and were included in her sale at Christie’s, 21 November 1969.Duke's are grateful to Wendy Baron for confirming the authenticity of this work, and for providing  the additional information above.

* London. The Fire at The Albion, circa 1820s/30s, watercolour on wove paper, depicting a fire raging at Albion Mills, Blackfriars Bridge, with firefighters and spectators, and St Paul's Cathedral in the background, sheet size 19.5 x 26.1cm (7.75 x 10.25ins), mounted, framed and glazed, pencil inscription on backboard 'Ex collection A.W. Ackermann'Qty: (1)NOTESProvenance: from the collection of Arther W. Ackermann (1830-1914), grandson of Rudolph Ackermann. After the aquatint by Augustus Charles Pugin and Thomas Rowlandson which appeared in The Microcosm of London , published by Rudolph Ackermann in three volumes between 1808 and 1810. The Albion flour mill, designed in the neo-classical style by James Wyatt, opened at the foot of Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1786, a symbol of Britain’s rapid industrial progress during the late 18th century. The revolutionary steam engines contained therein were widely resented by millers who still relied on wind or water power, and when, on 2nd March 1791, the mill was entirely destroyed by fire, there were rumours of foul-play. It is thought that poor maintence was the real culprit, but the fire was a sensational event, and many people crowded to the site in the following weeks. The catastrophe became a symbol of the evil of industrial progress and is thought to have inspired William Blake (who lived close-by) to portray his vision of "dark Satanic Mills", now best-known as part of the hymn 'Jerusalem'.

* Ryall (Henry Thomas, 1811-1867). The Pursuit of Pleasure (A Vision of Human Life), 1864, uncoloured mixed method engraving by Henry Ryall after Sir Joseph Noel Paton, published by Alexander Hill, very slight spotting and dust soiling, 800 x 1100 mm, framed in a near-contemporary gilt gesso moulding, facsimile key plate to verso of frameQty: (1)NOTESA moral and allegorical depiction of the fate of the pursuers of a hedonistic lifestyle. Pleasure - depicted as a sensuous and nubile young girl - is crowned with a wreath of poppies and has the wings of a Death's-Head Hawkmoth. Her escorts are two all-knowing putti who strew flowers and blow bubbles to lure on the massed throng behind them. Pleasure is pursued by a cavalcade of individuals, in the vanguard are an 'ecclesiastical dignitary', a 'son of toil', a monarch, a 'youth of luxury' and a 'man of genius'. They seem oblivious to the young girl and the unmarried mother that they trample underfoot. They are followed by a 'Bacchanal' and three 'unthinking daughters of vanity'. behind them is a 'votary of military glory and conquest' who is spattered with blood and treads humanity under his feet, supported by a soldier and a trumpeter dragging a captive behind them. Above the throng is a damsel borne by a fool and a gallant and after them a miser, a spooning couple and a 'tyrant king', blind and brandishing a flaming torch. Lastly, another figure who appears to be turning back. They rush towards a yawning pit whilst above them the Angel of Judgement fills the sky wielding a sword and carrying a open book.

* Lambert (George Washington, 1873-1930). Portrait of a young woman, 1902, pencil on paper laid on card, head and shoulders portrait half-profile to left, of an Edwardian lady gazing into the distance, wearing a high-necked blouse and with her hair swept up, signed and dated lower right and with placename of London, toned and some light spotting, a little worn at edges, sheet size 23.7 x 18.9cm (9.5 x 7.5ins)Qty: (1)NOTESProvenance: Believed to have been given to the owner's grandmother's family by the artist, and thence by descent. The owner's grandmother worked at the Royal Academy of Music and subsequently the Admiralty; her father, Sven Didericksen, was head chef at The Rembrandt Hotel in Knightsbridge, London, and her uncle was the proprietor of an antiquarian book and print shop in London. The family moved in artistic circles, and Australian painter George Lambert, who lived for a time in London, is known to have been a friend. It has been suggested that the subject is the artist Thea Proctor (1879-1966), an Australian painter, known as a prominent arbiter of taste, who was also a printmaker, designer and teacher. Although Proctor didn't travel to London until 1903, she and Lambert met at art school in Sydney, and this portrait does appear to bear a strong resemblance to her. Beautiful and elegant, she was tutored privately by Lambert, sat regularly for him and was a frequent visitor to his London home. On her part she found Lambert intellectually stimulating and was apparently devoted to him. Their exact relationship is unknown but he became her mentor and their friendship was lifelong.
