A Staffordshire creamware commemorative jug of American and Whig interest, possibly Wedgwood, printed with an American brig under partial sail above trophies of war, verso with an oval map of Canada and the original thirteen colonies, beneath an angel with trumpet and laurel wreath trailing ribband inscribed WASHINGTON, below this, the first President stands beside a figure with liberty bonnet who gestures towards His Majesty's loyal Canadian provinces, opposite, a seated figure of Benjamin Franklin rests a copy of the Declaration of Independence upon his knee, 26cm high, circa 1800 (small chips and scratches). Note: It is possibly that this jug commemorates the death of George Washington, first President of the United States (1732-99). It is often forgotten that this war was really a civil war between Whigs and Tories, those loyal and those not, rather than the more modern view of plucky Americans versus perfidious Albion and jugs such as this would not only have been produced for export but presumably also for those with Whiggish tendencies at home who supported the rebellious colonists. A George III mahogany serpentine fronted chest of drawers, circa 1780, bearing label to drawer 'Elizabeth Bell, London...', with reeded chamfered corners and carved outer edge to top, 80cm high, 95cm wide, 50cm deep. Christopher Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 90, fig. 77). Elizabeth Bell was permitted by Guild regulations to carry on the business established in 1736 by her late husband Henry (d.1740) who took over the business of Coxed & Worster upon Worster's death in 1736. The business was based at the White Swan, St Pauls Churchyard and it is noted that Elizabeth had not served an apprenticeship. The trade label she employed is identical to that used by her husband, merely substituting "Elizabeth" for "Henry" and sometime later adding '& SON'. Elizabeth Bell retired, or died, in about 1758. At the time of publication, Gilbert noted that Elizabeth Bell's label had, so far, only been found on quality walnut and mahogany cabinet furniture. Visit www.dnfa.com for condition reports.

A fine mid Victorian harewood writing table attributed to Holland and Sons, the rectangular top with a central tooled leather surface to tulipwood banding and an egg and dart gilt brass edge above two frieze drawers banded with purple heart and inlaid a diaper motif, with conforming sides and a dummy reverse, on square tapering supports headed by ormolu paterae and mounted with tassellated drapes, terminating in acanthus and on ball feet, 29.25in (74.2cm) h, 42in (106.6cm) w, 24.25in (61.5cm) d. We believe this table to be a fine example of the work of the leading Victorian cabinet makers Holland & Sons. The business started in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland (who was certainly related to the architect Henry Holland), became Holland & Sons in 1843. During the next thirty years the firm established its reputation at various international exhibitions including Paris in 1855. Commissions from various members of the Royal family included work at Buckingham Palace, Osborne House, Balmoral and Marlborough House. This present lot is typical of the fashion for French influenced furniture at the time and is very similar to a marquetry inlaid writing table with the inventory stamp of Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII (1901-10) which was with the Alexander Gallery, 1976.

The Siege of Mafeking was the most famous British action in the Second Boer War. It took place at the town of Mafeking (now Mafikeng) in South Africa over a period of 217 days, from October 1899 to May 1900, and turned Robert Baden-Powell, who went on to found the Scouting Movement, into a national hero. As normal commerce was interrupted and rationing ordered, Powell issued 1, 2 and 3 shilling coupons as well as ten-shilling and one-pound notes. From February to March 1900, these notes were printed in an underground shelter on ordinary writing paper. The lifting of the Siege of Mafeking was a decisive victory for the British and a crushing defeat for the Boers. All of these notes appear in apparently unused condition.
