CIRCLE OF GODFREY SYKES (1824-1866) AND JAMES GAMBLE (1875-before 1910) RENAISSANCE REVIVAL CABINET- oak and elm, decorated with penwork, of architectural form, the doors to the front cupboard painted in black with putti, one titled ‘PAINTING’, the other ‘SCULPTURE’, the side doors with monogram ‘SA’ entwined with the national plants of Great Britain & Ireland, and surrounded by a laurel wreath, the whole decorated with bands of neo-renaissance ornament in red and black(115cm wide, 122.5cm high, 57cm deep)Note: The style of the cabinet is unusual within the context of British cabinet making, in that it is painted in a neo-renaissance manner, in red and black on light wood. This is a feature that was also employed on a piano designed by James Gamble and made for Henry Cole, now in the collection of the V&A in London.Despite the current lack of documentary or photographic evidence, it is considered more than likely that this cabinet formed part of the original furnishings of the Victoria & Albert Museum and that the entwined ‘SA’ monogram stands for 'Science and Art' – a feature repeated several times on the West staircase of the V&A building. The staircase was designed by Francis Wollaston Moody, a member of the Museum’s design studio, who was notably influenced by Geoffrey Sykes who had been the first decorative designer of the Museum.

ALFRED WATERHOUSE (1830-1905) (ATTRIBUTED DESIGNER) FOR HENRY CAPEL’S ART FURNITURE, LONDON SPINDLE- oak, with later upholstery of the period(46cm wide, 97.5cm high, 46cm deep)Literature: V&A Collection accession no. 29637:138 Note: An advertisement card for Henry Capel’s Art Furniture of around 1875 illustrates a similar chair to the present lot. Henry Capel was one of several furniture manufacturers who specialised in 'art furniture'. The advertisement shows some of the characteristic examples of this style of furnishing: lighter spindle-turned furniture, the use of painted panels and tiles particularly with figurative designs, and reformist Gothic designs. Capel worked particularly closely with Alfred Waterhouse, producing furniture and fittings for over 30 of Waterhouse's buildings. Waterhouse probably drew the designs for these projects, which reflect his interest in Gothic and medieval architecture. Capel is recorded as working throughout the 1870s and exhibited at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878.

FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF JUAN CARLOS KATZENSTEIN (1925-2018): A PROMINENT ARGENTINIAN DIPLOMAT (BY REPUTE) STONE-EMBELLISHED GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF AN ELEVEN-HEADED AVALOKITESVARA TIBETO CHINESE / SINO-TIBETAN, POSSIBLY 18TH CENTURY Mercury gilt and initially stone embellished. Exquisitely modeled and standing on a single lotus rank base, with his two principle hands in front of his chest in anjali mudra and holding various implements in his six radiating hands (here only the lotus blossom and the kundika are left) dressed in a pleated two-tier ankle-length dhoti incised with a floral pattern, adorned with jewelry festoons and an antelope skin draped over the left shoulder, the eleven faces arranged in tiers, each surmounted by a jeweled tiara, the primary head with cascading locks of hair, the face with almond shaped eyes and bow-shaped mouth, richly gilt overall with polychromy remaining. Note: The origin of the eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara is shrouded by many legends. In one version, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara vowed to never give up practicing tender loving compassion and would not reach enlightenment until all beings had reached nirvana. He tried for eons with no avail and when he saw no decrease in suffering of living things within samsara, his head split into a thousand pieces in despair. His spiritual father, Amitabha, consolidated them into ten heads and placed them above each other, then putting his own head on top. The wrathful aspect of Avalokiteshvara, Mahakala, came into existence to fight against negative forces with compassion, guiding all living things toward righteousness and achieving enlightenment. 铜鎏金十一面观音菩萨像 中国西藏,可能为18世纪 NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot.
