1200-800 BC, Greek Archaic Period. This beautiful cast bronze sword has a tapering, bevelled blade with a wide raised midrib adorned with five shallow fullers or “blood groves” and a recessed integral handle with a gently crescentic lower guard. The recessed design would have allowed the entire handle to have been inset with stone, bone or stone inlay. Bronze weaponry production flourished in western Asia, the Aegean, and Mainland Greece from the 2nd millennium BC to about 700 BC, when it was gradually replaced by iron. Swords, spears, and arrows were important symbols of war in Greek Bronze Age societies and served as powerful reminders that authority rested in the hands of those who could earn it. Superb condition, on a custom-made stand. Size: L:330mm; 145g. Provenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.

c. 900-1100 AD. Viking age. An iron bearded axe head with an elongated, heavy blade and a round socket. The bearded axe, or Skeggøx (from Old Norse Skegg, "beard", and øx, "axe") was common from the 6th century AD onwards in Scandinavia, but made most famous by the Vikings, who used these axes in battle to terrible effect. Bearded axes are named for the fact that the main part of the axe blade extends below the butt of the axe, creating a large cutting blade and allowing a fighter to hook onto the shields or weapons of his (or her) opponents. Further information on Viking axes can be found in Petersen, Jan (1919). De Norske Vikingesverd. Kristiania. Good condition; on a custom made stand. Size: H:205mm/L:160mm/H:190mm (without stand); 1130g. Provenance: From the private collection of an Essex gentleman; previously in an old British Collection, formed in the 1980s.

Good condition. 1200-800 BC, Greek Archaic Period. A bronze sword with a pointed, lanceolate-shaped, bevelled blade with flaring shoulder and a short tang with a perforation and pin for affixing the blade to a pommel. This item is mounted on a stand. Superb condition. Size: L:430mm; 316g. Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK / International art markets.

C. 600 BC. Late Archaic Greece. A beautiful iron sword with a tapering, bevelled blade, a raised midrib, and two deep, decorative fullers or “blood grooves”, and an integral with perforation for affixing decoration such as a bone, stone, or ivory inlay. Weapons such as this sword are powerful reminders that authority rested in the hands of those who could earn it. In a world where each Greek city state was fiercely independent and could only be sustained through the military power of its male inhabitants weapons such as this beautiful sword, which may have belonged to an elite soldier, perhaps a hoplite or a Spartiate, were symbols of wealth and power. Good condition; on a custom-made stand. Size: L:460mm / W:50mm ; 446g. Provenance: Property of a professional London art expert; obtained from an old British collection formed in the 1990s.

Artist: Diane Arbus (American, 1923-1971). Title: "Jewish Giant at Home with His Parents in the Bronx, New York [Eddie Carmel]". Medium: Original photogravure. Date: Composed 1970. Printed 1978. Dimensions: Overall size: 15 3/4 x 11 5/8 in. (400 x 295 mm). Image size: 10 1/16 x 9 15/16 in. (256 x 252 mm).Lot Note(s): Stamped with the photographer's name, verso. High-grade archival paper. Ample margins. Fine, qualty printing. Very good to fine condition. Comment(s): According to “Gordon’s Photography Prices” the auction record for a silver print of this image is $583,500 realized at Christie's, New York, 5/17/2017, lot #25B. This is one of Arbus’s most famous pictures and one of her best-known subjects – a ‘Jewish giant’ named Eddie Carmel. Carmel worked in carnival sideshows and as an actor in monster B-movies. Arbus photographed him a number of times and described the family dynamics: "The parents are orthodox and repressive and disapprove of his carnival career … When he stands with his arms around each he looks like he would gladly crush them. They fight terribly in an utterly typical fashion which seems only exaggerated by their tragedy." True to her description, this could be a conventional family portrait, were it not for the apparent look of fear in Mrs. Carmel’s face as she looks up at her son, who stands cramped and bowed by the traditional family sitting room (courtesy National Galleries of Scotland). A wonderful article on this photograph and the relationship between Arbus and The Jewish Giant can be found here: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/13/arts/design/diane-arbus-recorded-a-bronx-familys-unsettling-dynamic.html?_r=0. Comment(s): Although this work is often catalogued as a lithograph, or silkscreen, or pochoir, or photo-lithograph, in reality it is none of these. By 1964 Guenther Dietz, the printer, had created a unique fine printing system which involved the use of both lithographic plates and serigraphic screens. He and master printers from his company (Guenther Dietz Offizin Handpresse GmbH, Munich & Lengmoos, Germany) printed this work under the direct supervision and participation of Picasso himself. Dietz used grease crayon, lithographic tusche, lead pencil, and charcoal, among others, to create the matrixes and receive Picasso’s approval to print the edition (Cramer, ‘Livres’ 148). 1967 Morris Mini Traveller 1275 Downton Cooper 'S' SpecificationMake: Morris Model: Mini Traveller 1275 Downton Cooper 'S' SpecificationYear: 1967Mileage: Contact AuctioneerVIN: MAW4927668Registration: RRK689EConfiguration: Right hand driveTransmission: ManualPurchased new by a Mr Deith of Woodford Green, a keen amateur rally driver, this Traveller was promptly prepared for competition use with the fitment of a MK III 1,275 S Cooper engine with thick flange block and retaining the original one and a quarter SU carbs. In July 1970, the car was despatched to world renowned Downton Engineering, the BMC performance tuning and rally conversion specialists, who uprated the car to their Downton No. 3 conversion. It is believed that following several years of competition use, the car was placed into storage and virtually forgotten about. Fast forward to early 2016 when we, at ACA, were contacted by an Essex based storage company regarding the potential sale of a Mini they wished to dispose of in order to cover outstanding storage fees. After recognising the Cooper S engine and looking through the paperwork, we realised that we had found a very special car. Purchased by the vendor at our June 2016 auction, an extensive, no expense spared programme of restoration works commenced. This included a full engine rebuild by former Downton engineer, Steve Harris, when it was upgraded to a documented Downton Stage 5 conversion and full gearbox rebuild. We have been advised that well in excess of £20,000 was spent including full professional re-spray. Other noteworthy features include Dunlop alloys, triple front spotlights, additional instrumentation, map light, sports seats, heated windscreen, re-trimmed seats, Morris Cooper S badges and Downton Engineering roundels. The history file includes restoration invoices and images, older V5, a few rally documents and images and the original Downton receipt dated 1970.

1947 Aermacchi MB1Make: Aermacchi Model: MB1Year: 1947Mileage: Contact AuctioneerVIN: 11953Registration: Contact AuctioneerConfiguration: Left hand driveTransmission: ManualThe Aermacchi company was founded in 1912 by Giulio Macchi who produced aeroplanes and, famously, Seaplanes. To boost factory manufacturing after WW2, production started on the MB1, a three wheel truck. The MB1 was produced from 1945 until 1954 and designed by engineer, Emilio Bazzochi, hence the MB title standing for Macchi-Bazzochi. It is believed that this little truck was sold new in Belgium in 1947 and in 1949 was impounded by the Dutch authorities having been used for smuggling cigarettes and butter across the Dutch border. Impounded for twenty-five years without being claimed, the Dutch authorities held an auction in 1974 when it was sold to a collector in Holland. It is then believed to have been dry stored until being discovered in 2015. This earliest known MB1, is described by the vendor as being in time-warp condition. UK registration is required.
