Charles Arthur Salvador, 'Charlie' (British, b.1952). Born Michael Gordon Peterson, also known as Charles Bronson. 'Sweet & Toyshop'. 'The Hunch Back Egg Headed Ugly Soul Can't Buy No Sweets.....'. Mixed media on paper. Dedicated 'For Matt'. Signed Charles Bronson 29.05.97. Paper size A4 (29.5 x 21cm). Provenance: gifted to the vendor by Charles Bronson. Charles Arthur Salvador, 'Charlie', (born Michael Gordon Peterson also known as Charles Bronson), was born 6 December 1952. He is an English criminal who is often referred to in the British press as the "most violent prisoner in Britain" and "Britain's most notorious prisoner". Charlie is one of the highest-profile criminals in Britain and has been featured in books, interviews, and studies in prison reform and treatment. He was the subject of the 2008 film Bronson starring Tom Hardy, a biopic based loosely around his life. Bronson has written many books about his experiences and famous prisoners he has met throughout his incarceration. A self-declared fitness fanatic who has spent many years in segregation, Bronson dedicated a book to exercising in confined spaces. He has also cultivated a reputation as an outsider artist, with his paintings and illustrations of prison and psychiatric hospital life being publicly exhibited and winning him multiple awards. Charlie has 11 Koestler Trust awards for his art and poetry. Some people say the artwork shows the dark corners of a disturbed mind, but supporters say the scenes reflect the events he has witnessed and lived. It is art that has come straight from his soul. It was in 1994 at HMP Wakefield that prison officer Mick O'Hagan encouraged him to take up art, and his lifelong love of art has been his saviour ever since. Charles, who changed his surname as a mark of respect to one of his favourite artists Salvador Dali, is said to have drawn "the madness he has come in contact with."

New York City was at the end of an economic slump which had begun in 1973 and the ball was supposed to help create economic stimulus for a city which had been mired by a depression since The Panic of 1893. However, days after the ball, it was viciously condemned by the press. In 1893, aged 16, Cornelia Martin married William Craven, 4th Earl of Craven, whom she had met whilst her family were renting Balmacaan, a Scottish highland estate. They lived in Mayfair and Coombe Abbey, Warwickshire - the Craven family estate. This was a match of American wealth to British aristocracy and the Countess accrued an art collection and a fabled 'casket of jewels' reflecting her position in the high society of America and Europe. The present lot was commissioned in 1902 for the Countess. It was amongst her many important jewels, some of which had once belonged to the French crown.William George Robert Craven, 4th Earl of Craven, died in 1921 after a yachting accident when he fell overboard during a race at Cowes Week, and the Countess died in 1961, having moved to another Craven estate, Hamstead Lodge, near Newbury, after her husband's death.

An oval tortoiseshell and brass Boulle marquetry ebonised work table, 19th century, the interior fitted with mother-of-pearl pierced bobbins and sewing accoutrement within a red silk and velvet compartment 75 x 57 x 40cm Boullework, a distinguished decorative art form, originated in the 17th century and owes its name to André-Charles Boulle (1642–1732), a master craftsman who elevated this technique to new heights. This intricate marquetry style, known for its elaborate inlays and striking aesthetics, has a rich history influenced by earlier European artistic traditions. The roots of Boullework lie in the marquetry techniques of the Renaissance, which involved inlaying various materials like wood, ivory and metal into furniture surfaces to create decorative patterns. Italian intarsia and Flemish marquetry were particularly influential in shaping the early development of this craft. These methods set the stage for the more elaborate techniques that Boulle would later refine.Appointed as the master cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV in 1672, André-Charles Boulle became a central figure in the world of decorative arts. His workshop in the Louvre Palace was a centre of luxury and innovation. Boulle's work gained widespread acclaim for its meticulous craftsmanship and ornate designs, establishing him as the foremost artist of his era. Boulle perfected the technique by creating two contrasting sheets, usually one of brass and one of tortoiseshell, cut simultaneously to produce matching designs. This method, known as "partie" (brass on tortoiseshell) and "contre-partie" (tortoiseshell on brass), resulted in highly detailed and visually captivating patterns. His designs often featured scrolls, arabesques and intricate motifs, primarily adorning high-end furniture pieces such as cabinets, desks and commodes, as well as smaller decorative objects like clocks and picture frames.During the reign of Louis XIV, Boullework became synonymous with the opulence of French Baroque and Rococo styles. It continued to be highly regarded throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, influencing craftsmen across Europe and significantly impacting furniture design in England, the Netherlands and further afield. The 19th century saw a revival of interest in Boullework during the Napoleonic and Victorian periods, with many antique pieces being restored and new creations inspired by Boulle's techniques. Some loss of tortoise shell inlay in part all over item with lifting of brass inlay and brass mounted edges, some loss of brass mounted edges to legs, small split and loss to edge of lower shelf, some light staining and water damage to the silk interior, one pair of scissors missing, one mother of pearl button handle loose

A 1975 Rolls Royce Corniche convertible motor car, finished in Ivory with a cream hood and brown leather, piped in magnoliaThis is a three-owner car, originally supplied to a yacht dealer who was based in the south of France. It was ordered in right-hand-drive configuration (as the owner didn't want to have to learn how to drive with the steering wheel on the left!) and delivered to Frank Dale in London before being shipped to Franco britanic Autos ltd, Paris. He had asked Rolls Royce to paint the car in Vauxhall Regency Cream but they refused to paint it a Vauxhall colour and gave him the closest colour from their approved swatches, being Rolls Royce Ivory (paint code 9510233). Eve Clarke purchased the car in 1987 when the mileage was recorded at 25,000 and it is now showing approximately 31,000 miles. Recently re-commissioned by a local Rolls Royce specialist (at a cost of £2,100, to include new battery, fuel tank flush and some new fuel lines) after approximately 12 years in storage, the car presents well and is ready to use and enjoy. The cherished registration DRB 700 will accompany the car.The car presents well but on close inspection there are numerous areas of micro-blistering to the paintwork and some possible corrosion under the paintwork on the lower section of the bootlid. Mechanically the car drove well on a short test drive albeit the driver's window was not functioning and there may be a broken spring to the offside front suspension. We have been advised by the specialist who has recently worked on the vehicle, that the engine and gearbox appear to be fundamentally good but that it will need further work to the brake pipes and significant work to the hydraulic system whcih will need to be entirely renewed. There is a small tear in the hood near the nearside window. We are told the pump for the motorised hood mechanism is working but we have not operated the hood ourselves. The car comes with two sets of keys and numerous old MOT certifcates and invoices for previous works (please see images)Please note, the condition report included herewith is not exhaustive. Cheffins are unable to provide any further condition or mechanical reports on this lot and Bidders are thus advised to view the vehicle in person where possible. Our images and walk-around video are designed to provide a guide as to the physical condition of the vehicle only. Vehicles are sold as seen.
