He had a close personal relationship with the managers, Edgar and Leonard. Many of his collectibles were purchased from Bluett & Sons Ltd. He was passionate about Chinese culture and had a diverse collection of Chinese antiques. He filled a room in his home with various antique artworks and enjoyed sitting alone in the room, quietly admiring them. Bluett & Sons Ltd., an antique store, was founded by Alfred Ernest Bluett in 1884. After his passing in 1917, his sons, Leonard Buckland Bluett and Edgar Ernest Bluett, took over the management of the antique business. In 1922, they relocated the store from 377 Oxford Street to the bustling intersection of Brooke Street and Davis Street in London. Bluett & Sons was one of the most influential Chinese art antique shops in 20th-century Britain, dealing in porcelain, bronze wares, snuff bottles, and more. Sackville George Pelham, 5th Earl of Yarborough, MC (17 December 1888 - 7 February 1948), styled Lord Worsley from 1914 to 1926 and known as The Lord Conyers from 1926 until his accession to the earldom in 1936, was a British peer and soldier. Pelham was the second son of Charles Pelham, 4th Earl of Yarborough and his wife, Marcia. In 1910, he became a Second Lieutenant in the 11th Hussars and initially fought as a lieutenant in France during World War I before being promoted to the rank of captain in 1916. During the war, his elder brother, Charles was killed in action and Sackville assumed the former's courtesy title of Lord Worsley. After the war, he was awarded the Military Cross and retired from the Army in 1919 when he married Nancye Brocklehurst (a niece of Lord Ranksborough). The couple had two daughters, Diana Mary who became Diana Miller, 11th Countess of Mertola (1920-2013) and (June) Wendy who became Mrs Michael Hildesley Lycett (1924-2012). In 1926, Lord Worsley became a major in the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry and on the death of his mother that year, inherited the baronies of Conyers and Fauconberg and the Portuguese countship of Mertola. He later inherited the earldom of Yarborough from his father in 1936. From 1936 to 1940 the earl commanded the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry as a Lieutenant Colonel and fought in World War II from 1939 to 1944. Together with his wife, he was a survivor of the aerial bomber bombardment of the RMS Empress of Britain in October 1940 (and later sinking under tow) in which 45 were killed off Ireland. On his death in 1948, the earldom, Brocklesby Park and a moderately large area of farmland passed to his brother, Marcus, whilst the countship passed to his eldest daughter, Lady Diana, and the baronies went into abeyance between his two daughters. The death of his youngest daughter in 2012 terminated that in favour of Diana, who thus succeeded him in the baronies.

This lot comes from the family descendants of Sackville George Pelham, 5th Earl of Yarborough, MC (1888-1948). In the early 20th century, Sackville Pelham was a regular customer of Bluett & Sons Ltd. He had a close personal relationship with the managers, Edgar and Leonard. Many of his collectibles were purchased from Bluett & Sons Ltd. He was passionate about Chinese culture and had a diverse collection of Chinese antiques. He filled a room in his home with various antique artworks and enjoyed sitting alone in the room, quietly admiring them. Bluett & Sons Ltd., an antique store, was founded by Alfred Ernest Bluett in 1884. After his passing in 1917, his sons, Leonard Buckland Bluett and Edgar Ernest Bluett, took over the management of the antique business. In 1922, they relocated the store from 377 Oxford Street to the bustling intersection of Brooke Street and Davis Street in London. Bluett & Sons was one of the most influential Chinese art antique shops in 20th-century Britain, dealing in porcelain, bronze wares, snuff bottles, and more. During the 1920s, they frequently commissioned Europeans in China to help them source goods, and many artifacts were expedited to London through the Siberian Express. Their clients included King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, The British Museum in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and others. They also acquired goods from C.T. Loo, inc. in Paris, London, and Shanghai for resale. With the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and the looming war in Europe, the enthusiasm of collectors significantly declined, leading to a sharp decline in Bluett & Sons' turnover between 1938 and 1939. It only recovered after World War II. Starting in the early 1970s, they began publishing scholarly catalogs, which were later emulated by various antique shops and auction houses. During the active era of antique shops, there were also opportunistic traders similar to those seen in the 1990s Chinese auction market. One such customer, Major Lindsay F Hay, bought many Chinese imperial porcelain items from Bluett & Sons in 1938 and auctioned them at Sotheby's the following year. When Ford initially commissioned the inaugural batch of Mercury Cougars in 1966, they instantly became a huge success with the public. The name itself evoked vivid imagery of strength, power, and style. The Cougar went on for a few generations, though the original generation is arguably the most well-known. Ford created the Cougar as a halfway point between Mustang and Thunderbird, most notably as a step-up from the Mustang. Ford had projected a sale of about 85,000 units in its first year. However, the public surprised the company by buying 150,000 units. The Cougar had a distinct look, feel, and appeal from its highly successful predecessor, complete with longer chassis and wider wheelbase. The Cougar continued to win many accolades in the years immediately following its launch. 1969s got a minor body restyle and facelift, with a new grille that was now horizontally-barred and stretched all the way across the nose, replacing the previous vertical split "electric-shaver" grille design. Taillights were restyled too, they now canted inward instead of outward, but the style was largely the sameThis Cougar is registered post April 1969, as it is the subtle face lift version. Presented in White with black hood stripe and black vinyl roof over. The interior is black leather or leatherette. It comes with the 351 cid 250bhp 5.8l Windsor V8, which we believe have had a few uprated items fitted to it.  The hood appears to be from an Eliminator of the same year too. The car was imported by our vendor last year, from Texas. It is clear it hasn’t seen any rain or salty air! The car appears mechanically sound (but buyers are advised to check this). There is some trim to be refitted both externally and internally. However, all items appear to be with the car. The original black sports dials are with the car. For now though, it is fitted with performance race dials, which do look the part. This is an extreme muscle car and wants to be driven. Not wishing to repeat myself but, the MGB was conceived as early as 1958 as a replacement for the highly successful MGA and this was before the last of the MGA model range, the MGA 1600, was put into production. it was only anticipated that the MGB would have a production life of seven years. The basic price of the MGB when it was released in the Autumn of 1962 was £690 plus £260 car tax. This was very favourably priced against the Triumph TR4 at £750 and £695 for the Sunbeam Alpine. The MGB went through a number of revisions with the Mark II being released in November 1967 with changes under skin only, namely the new stronger all syncromesh gearbox. The mark III arrived three years later Several changes were introduced for the 1970 model year (commencing in Oct 1969 for Roadsters, but September 1969 for GTs) the most important being a black, recessed radiator grille instead of the traditional chrome one which had been MG's trademark for many years. For the 1973 model year (from August 1972) MG reverted to a chrome radiator grille which resembled the older '62-'69 grille but had a black plastic honeycomb centre.This car was first registered 4th May 1973 having been purchased from Parish’s of Scarborourgh by Mr Thompson for £1450.00 exactly, who also specified static seatbelts, and overdrive as an option. Mr Thompson then moved to the Isle of Wight and took the car with him. The car returns to the UK in 2018 and is reassigned its original plate. The history file is copious on this car. There is a passport showing service stamps all the way through 1997 from new. Someone has written a car maintenance diary from 1997 onwards, and the previous vendor Spent £10,000 on mechanical work between 2020 to 2022. Having only had 2 previous owners and covered only 77k miles from new (we believe this genuine based on the records). This car is a little gem. It shows nice patina but still looks great. The roof fits, and it drives nicely. Wearing the correct face and alloys from the period. This could be an original car that’s worth keeping. Selling due to bereavement.

The origins of Vanden Plas went back to Carrosserie Van den Plas, formed in Belgium in 1898, and an English subsidiary established in 1913. In the 1920s it went bust but was reformed and prospered making bodywork for the likes of Bentley and Alvis. Acquired by BMC in 1946. By the late 1950s the company was engaged in adding luxury fittings to a range of Austin-Morris models produced by BMC. In 1963, the ADO16 range of saloons began to be upgraded culminating in the lavishly equipped Vanden Plas 1300 Princess as offered here. Leather upholstery, wood veneer, a distinctive radiator grille and special badging distinguished these VDP examples, whilst the 1.3-litre twin carburettor engine shared with the MG models developed some 65bhp, resulting in a 90mph top speed.Having been registered on 7th February 1972. The car went through a comprehensive restoration in 2021. Appearing to have covered just 84,000 miles from new. The car now looks like the car could have concours winning potential. Whilst the Vanden Plas Princess isn’t considered something overtly special, or highly desirable, we have to say this car is! In the catalogue we can see why you might just flick past. However, everyone who has walked up to this car has been blown away by how good it looks and feels. In the flesh, it beats some other great cars we have to offer.The history file shows 4 previous keepers and comes with a document wallet with some photographic evidence as well as invoices and notes, of the work carried out in 2021. If you do nothing else take some time whilst you are at Bishton to pay homage to this beautiful piece of engineered luxury. You won’t regret it.

Known affectionately as Project Carla, the MkIII Capri began its design phase in 1976. Due to the project’s tight budget, it ended up being little more than a facelifted version of the MkII, with updates being limited to a set of redesigned quad-headlights, a pair of new wings, a new bonnet, fresh bumpers and updated paint and interior options.In all, Ford spent around £480,000 on the development of the third-generation Capri, which is small change in comparison to the £20 million worth of development allocated for the first-generation model. To make up for the limited budget, Ford masked the Capri’s age through well-considered, cash-conscious trickery, repainting the MkII’s chrome bumpers and exterior trim in a more contemporary satin black and using existing tooling to create the MkIII’s trademark “hooded” bonnet.This is a Mk III Capri with a special story. She has been parked in a garage since 1987. Only seeing daylight for a couple of hours in 2016, when the owner sent it off for an MOT (They couldn’t drive themselves). It passed only needing a set of new tyres and an exhaust. However, it went straight back in and has only come out after the owner passed away. We have uncovered it and offer it here for sale in its very original condition. We have the original brochure used to order the car with notes on the spec required. The brochure is in as new condition!The car was registered on 11th January 1984. Sold by Page of Epsom to Mr Sutton. The only true owner. Sadly, he passed in 1985 and the car passed to his wife who couldn’t drive. That is where the story begins and ends. It sat being sporadically used by relatives for two years until, in 1987 it eventually ended up in the garage we removed it from this week. Its only covered 36,000 from new all of those in the 1980’s. It is a timewarp.  It’s a unicorn. It starts, runs and drives. If you love capri’s this has to be one to get, right?

AN 4307 Chassis no. 1903•Single family ownership since the 1980s•Largely original condition•Regularly maintained•Regular London to Brighton Veteran Car Run entrant since 2001•Ready for the next London-to-Brighton RunThe names of De Dion and Bouton are inextricably linked with the pioneer years of the motor car, initially in company with Trépardoux in the building of light steam carriages, the first of which appeared in 1883. In the early 1890s De Dion and Bouton turned their attention to the internal combustion engine, much to the annoyance of Trépardoux who quit in 1894, leaving his erstwhile partners to develop what was, in effect, the first high-speed internal combustion engine. Engineer Georges Bouton's power units developed significantly greater output than their contemporaries from Daimler and Benz, yet matched them for reliability. Small wonder then that De Dion Bouton engines were adopted by many other manufacturers of tricycles, quadricycles, and light cars, both in Europe and the United States, influenced no doubt by the success of the flying tricycles in such events as the Paris-Bordeaux and other endurance races. Early 137cc engines ran at speeds of up to 1,500rpm, while the 250cc engine of 1896 developed approximately 1¾ horsepower and made the contemporary Benz engines seem positively antiquated. Early De Dions were rear-engined and of the vis-à-vis type – where the passengers sat facing the driver – but from 1902 onwards the firm began to adopt what would become accepted as the conventional layout for a motor car. By this time, De Dion's fast-revving, single-cylinder engines were offered in 4½hp, 6hp, and 8hp variants. All featured mechanical inlet and atmospheric exhaust valves, and were noted for their reliability, which is borne out by the number surviving today.This single-cylinder 6hp De Dion Bouton two-seater has been in the same family ownership since the late 1980s. It has swept doors, which are a rare sight on a De Dion. Aesthetically, the car has been intentionally left in very much original condition. Mechanically we are told, it has been regularly maintained, is in working order and ready for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on which it has been a regular entrant since 2001. 1950s Alvis TA21 Chassis Chassis no. to be advisedLooking much like its TA14 predecessor, but featuring independent front suspension and a new overhead-valve six-cylinder engine, the new 3-Litre Alvis was announced in 1950 as the TA21. Styled along classic pre-war lines, the 3-Litre was reckoned by Autocar magazine to appeal to 'discerning owners who appreciate quality and good handling as well as mere performance'. Nevertheless, more of the latter was available from the mildly face-lifted TC21 - introduced in 1953 - courtesy of a redesigned cylinder head, twin SU carburettors and improved exhaust manifolding, making the TA21's successor good for 90mph. Bugatti Type 57-Style Bodyshell Coachwork by in the style of Corsica Chassis no. n/a•Aluminium replica body•In the style of a Bugatti T57 Corsica•Tan interior believed to be from a 1936 T57By the early 1930s Ettore Bugatti had established an unrivalled reputation for building cars with outstanding performance on road or track; the world's greatest racing drivers enjoying countless successes aboard the Molsheim factory's products and often choosing them for their everyday transport. Because of its lengthy run of success, Ettore Bugatti remained stubbornly committed to his single-cam engine, only adopting the more advanced double-overhead-camshaft method of valve actuation, after much prompting by his eldest son Jean, on the Type 50 of 1930. From then on Jean Bugatti took greater responsibility for design, his first car being the exquisite Type 55 roadster, a model ranking among the finest sports cars of the 1930s. He followed that with a design of equal stature, the Type 57. A larger car than the Type 55, the Type 57 was powered by a 3.3-litre, double-overhead-camshaft straight eight of modern design housed in Bugatti's familiar Vintage-style chassis. Showing the strong influence of Jean Bugatti, it at last gave the marque a civilised Grande Routière to match those of rivals Delage and Delahaye. The Type 57 in all its forms attracted discerning owners who were only satisfied with the best, among them speed king Sir Malcolm Campbell. Himself the owner of a Type 57, he wrote: 'If I was asked to give my opinion as to the best all-round super-sports car which is available on the market today, I should, without any hesitation whatever, say it was the 3.3 Bugatti... it cannot fail to attract the connoisseur or those who know how to handle the thoroughbred. It is a car in a class by itself.' Indeed, Bugatti historian Hugh Conway even went so far as to described the Type 57 as 'the most celebrated non-racing car that Bugatti ever produced'. 1964 Don Parker Model 4W 35 Four-Wheel Race Trailer Chassis no. 17567Offered here is a very rare Don Parker Race Trailer, which was manufactured in 1964 by former racing driver Don Parker, who had commenced building trailers when he retired from racing in 1959. The vendor's father bought the trailer new in 1964 to transport Lagonda cars to races, and it was also used as a recovery trailer. This particular trailer is believed unique, as it has an actual chassis number. Mainly used in the 1960s, '70s and early '80s, it is described by our vendor as in excellent condition, having seen very little use in 60 years. The ramps may be stored in two positions: flat on the chassis or vertically with support stays. A spare wheel and four chrome hub caps are included in the sale together with chains and shackles for securing vehicles to the trailer. U176•Body believed built for the Maharajah of Mysore•Late Ghost with four-wheel brakes and AutoVac fuel system•Restored by the late Tony James. Ex RREC Chairman. •Recent service by Ristes of Nottingham•Ready to enjoy A car with a fascinating history, '82EU' was originally sold to Barkers who bodied it for the first owner, one Benjamin Sassoon of London. The car was signed off by Eric Platford on 29th November 1924 and delivered on 20th January 1925. Being a late Ghost, it benefits from four-wheel brakes and an Autovac fuel feed. The car's current body is an original open-drive example built by Steuarts of Calcutta circa 1913, it is believed for the Maharajah of Mysore. This in turn was a copy of a body built by Barkers in 1913, which was displayed at Olympia on chassis number '2366'. The Steuarts body was imported from India in 1967. This car is the life's work of noted Rolls-Royce luminary and enthusiast, the late Mr Tony James, who sourced the body (from James Black). Taken beside Lake Dhakhuria in 1965, a photograph of the body on the previous chassis comes with the car. A passionate restoration was carried out by Engineer, businessman, horologist, renown Rolls-Royce enthusiast, tools specialist, Tony James, whose hero was fellow engineer Sir Henry Royce. Tony studied and knew intimately the working of Rolls-Royce motor cars. During his term as chairman of the RREC he applied his considerable business skill and love of Rolls-Royce (and Bentley) cars to ensuring the strong financial status of the club with, amongst other things, the inception of the year book; preservation of cars and the marque, imparted knowledge at seminars and in articles written with clarity and humour as well as solutions via phone and email communication direct with fellow enthusiasts and those needing help within the industry. Tony offered step by step advice to fix and improve the workings of many a car project and had a hand in restoring 147 Rolls-Royce motor cars, with a particular interested in pre-war examples. '82EU' is finished in Royal Blue with black wings and roof and a black interior, with the bonnet left in polished aluminium. Photographs of the unpainted body come with the car showing it as found and installed. The driver's compartment is upholstered in black leather with original seat backs and re-trimmed seat squabs. An aluminium dashboard with the requisite instruments completes the ensemble. The attention to detail is extraordinary from the hand-crafted multi-layer coach-line, the hand-woven silk window tapes to the leather gaiters on the springs. The vendor confirms that the Ghost needs and wants for nothing. '82EU' is of sufficient importance to have graced the R-REC stand at the NEC.The Ghost has most recently been at marque specialists Ristes of Nottingham having an extensive service and a tune-up.This is a supremely elegant car with rare and highly desirable Indian coachwork. It is also a super Ghost to drive. The open drive Limousine allows the driver to feel the exhilaration of guiding her, whilst passengers are closed in the back in comfort upon button backed restored leather seating with vanity items and footwarmer to complete the plush interior. 1949 Triumph Roadster 2000 Convertible Registration no. LPP 939 Chassis no. TRA 689•Restored circa 40 years ago•Regularly used and campaigned•Standard Vanguard overdrive gearbox•Well loved and well maintainedThanks to its use by TV's fictional Jersey detective Jim Bergerac, few post-war classics are as instantly recognisable as the Triumph Roadster. A landmark model in the history of the Coventry firm, the 1800 Roadster was one of the first post-war designs to bear the Triumph name. Standard was already supplying Jaguar with a 1,776cc overhead-valve engine and four-speed gearbox for the latter's 1½-Litre saloon, and these were chosen for the new car. The chassis - an all-new design featuring independent front suspension - comprised two large-diameter steel tubes joined by cross braces. Styled by Standard's Frank Callaby, the Roadster's elegant alloy-panelled body was unusual in retaining the dickey seat that had been a feature of the pre-war Triumph Dolomite Roadster Coupé.Launched in March 1946 alongside its sister car, the 1800 Saloon, the Roadster was not revised until 1948 when it received the 2.1-litre engine, three-speed gearbox, and rear axle of the newly introduced Standard Vanguard, which would also be used in Triumph's TR sports cars. When Roadster production ceased the following year, a total of 4,501 of these charismatic cars had been built, there being an estimated 400-plus survivors.This example owes its survival to a gentleman who bought it as a 'barn find' in 1981 and spent two years restoring it from the ground upwards. The only significant mechanical change is an upgrade to the Standard Vanguard's overdrive gearbox, giving an extra ratio on both second and top that makes for more relaxed open-road cruising. The owner got a great deal of use out of it over the next almost 40 years, collecting prizes at shows and enjoying tours abroad to France and (inevitably!) Jersey with the Roadster Club. The paint has been reapplied once since the restoration but otherwise the car presents as a well-loved, well-maintained example, ready for anything.The history file contains restoration photographs, as well as a few more from shows and associated newspaper cuttings. There is a receipt for a new exhaust, fabricated from stainless steel in 2007, and some manuals and technical handbooks for the Roadster and related saloon models. Remarkably, there is even a cutting from the local paper in 1981 announcing the auction of this car 'in need of renovation'. Oscar Montague Guest, MP•Purchased by Alan Clark in 1989•Offered for sale by the Clark family•Requires restorationBy the end of the 1930s the 'Derby' Bentley, introduced towards the beginning of that decade following the firm's take-over by Rolls-Royce, had undergone a number of significant developments, not the least of which was an increase in bore size in 1936 that upped the capacity to 4,257cc, a move that coincided with the adoption of superior Hall's Metal bearings. This new engine was shared with the equivalent Rolls-Royce - the 25/30hp - and as had been the case with the preceding 3½-Litre model, enjoyed a superior specification in Bentley form, boasting twin SU carburettors, raised compression ratio and a more 'sporting' camshaft. Thus the new 4¼-Litre model offered more power than before while retaining the well-proven chassis with its faultless gear-change and servo-assisted brakes. The Derby Bentley was, of course, an exclusively coachbuilt automobile. Of the 2,442 manufactured, almost 50 percent were bodied by Park Ward in a limited number of styles and this example is typical of the firm's popular sports saloon. 'DLT 677' was delivered new to its first owner Major The Hon. Oscar Montague Guest, MP, youngest son of the 1st Baron Wimborne, in February 1937. Many years later the Bentley belonged to another, somewhat better known parliamentarian, the motoring enthusiast and famed bon viveur, the Rt Hon. Alan Clark, MP, who purchased it in 1989. 'DLT 677' was collected from its owner in the Midlands and driven to Saltwood Castle, the Clark family's home in Kent. The car had been purchased with the intention of restoring it; sadly, ill health intervened and the project never got off the ground. The Bentley has remained at Saltwood Castle in the Clark family's possession ever since, complete but in need of restoration (the engine has not run for many years but is said to be 'free'). 1951 Daimler 2½-Litre Special Sports Drophead Coupé Registration no. MGU 111 Chassis no. 59013 Engine no. 44245•First owned by famous novelist Hammond Innes•Fully restored between 2011 and 2012•Requires recommissioning following storage•Comprehensive history fileThis rare Special Sports comes with an account of its life written by the previous owner and published in the Daimler & Lanchester Owners Club magazine. The car was nicknamed 'Magoo' by its first owner, the famous novelist Hammond Innes. Innes bought the car from the Motor Show stand in 1951 when he had just been told of record sales of his novel The Wreck of the Mary Deare and that the film rights had been sold. He kept the Daimler until 1962, by which time it had covered some 62,000 miles, mainly on the Continent. The next owner was a Mr B Riding, resident in London, who covered around 40,000 miles, most of them on the newly opened M4 motorway travelling from London to Somerset and back. In 1983 the Daimler was sold again, remaining in London where it was garage stored. While the owner was away the coolant froze in cold weather, splitting the cylinder block and inlet manifold. The car was left to deteriorate. A Daimler enthusiast and DLOC member, the previous owner purchased 'MGU 111' in 2011 with 5,200 miles recorded (105,200 miles in actual fact). He then proceeded to fully restore the car as far as was possible to original specification. The engine block was replaced with an ex-MoD Dingo Scout Car spare, and the wings extensively rebuilt to rectify corrosion around the sidelight pods and where they meet the apron across the front. Wood was replaced in the sills, and the entire car painted in cellulose in the original colours. All rubbers, seals, front suspension bushes, brake seals were replaced wherever necessary. Original apart from the carpets, the interior was cleaned and treated. A new wiring loom was fitted also. In addition, the period-look radio was upgraded with modern internals.Since the aforementioned previous owner's death five years ago the car has been in storage and will require a thorough check-over and service before returning to the road. 'MGU 111' has a fascinating history file containing all invoices for the period 1962-1983 and commencing with an RAC inspection for the second owner; it also contains a substantial quantity of bills, including those relating to its restoration of 2011-2012. 1914 Rover 12hp Tourer Registration no. SP 363 Chassis no. 3719 Engine no. 3719•Landmark early Rover•Present ownership for the last 20 years•Actively campaigned in VCC eventsWhat would eventually become the Rover company began by manufacturing one of the landmark designs in the history of human transportation: the 'Safety Bicycle'. Brainchild of John Kemp Starley, the Rover cycle featured two identical-size wheels and chain drive to the rear, thus rendering the precarious front-drive 'Ordinary' - better known as the 'Penny Farthing' - obsolete at a stroke. The firm's first venture into powered transportation came in 1888 with an electric tricycle, but it would be another 16 years, by which time its founder J K Starley had died, before the Rover Cycle Company began experimenting with the internal combustion engine. Designer Edmund Lewis was recruited from Daimler and drew up Rover's first series-production automobile, an 8hp single-cylinder with aluminium backbone frame, an adventurous design that despite its shortcomings remained in production until 1912.Lewis followed up with a more conventional 6hp model, which earned itself the distinction of being Rover's first entered in any competition, in this case the Bexhill Speed Trials of 1902. Before his departure for Siddeley-Deasy, Lewis bequeathed another significant design, the 16/20hp, winner of the 1907 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race for Rover. After an undistinguished flirtation with the Knight sleeve-valve engine, Rover hired Wolseley engineer Owen Clegg, who reorganised production and put the company back on track with a conventional poppet-valve engined car, the 12hp. Powered by a 2.3-litre four featuring pumped lubrication (for the first time on a Rover) the 'Clegg Twelve' was the sole model in the range by 1912 and would remain in production into the 1920s.This Rover 12 has been regularly used in VCC events during its 20-year ownership by a prominent member of the Midland Section whose advancing years have brought the car to the market. A highly attractive example, displaying a wonderful patina, the Rover has been maintained throughout this time by Cooke's of Leicester. The previous owner was a Mr L Weaver of Hailsham, East Sussex, during whose ownership sympathetic restoration work was carried out by NP Veteran Engineering (invoices on file). In addition, numerous minor works were carried out to keep the vehicle in top condition: rewound mag, new spring gaiters, wheel refurbishment, various items nickel plated, etc. The car is offered with a good history file containing, among other paperwork, a VCC dating certificate, a V5C document and an original instruction book. 1953 Daimler Conquest Roadster Prototype Registration no. ORW 655 Chassis no. 85004•Unique pre-production prototype •Numerous unique features•Known ownership history•Present ownership since 2009•Offered in 'barn find' condition for restorationThe pre-production prototype, left-hand drive chassis number '85004' is the only Daimler Roadster built in 1953, constructed on the instruction of Lady Docker when she saw how well the Jaguars XK 120-140 were selling. Carbodies of Coventry was responsible for overseeing the car's construction, which was accomplished in six weeks in time for the 1953 Earls Court Motor Show in October. The body was constructed of aluminium on an ash frame. The prototype Roadster was displayed on the Daimler stand and after the show was registered for road use on 7th December 1953 as 'ORW 655'. It was then loaned to Ken Wharton for three years along with OHP 832 (the saloon that won at Silverstone that was given to Reg Parnell) and became part of the Daimler racing team, Ken chose 6 more drivers including two ladies, who also were given Daimler saloons modified for racing to publicise the model. 'ORW 655' is known to have participated in the race for 2-3 litre prototype cars held after the production car event at Silverstone on 15th May 1954. However, no proof exists that it entered any more than this one race. As a member of the racing team, Wharton and the rest of the race team was allowed to keep the prototype and their saloons as their personal cars and drove them to many events. The only picture of these cars racing is UHP832 at Silverstone which won the fastest time, after 3 years the race team was abandoned and all the cars were given back to Daimler, who sold them on. The racing drivers picked by Ken included Reg Parnell and George Abecassis.The first production prototype Roadster was built on chassis '85003' and registered 'OKV 699' on 20th May 1954, and is much closer in design and specification to the actual production models than is this pre-prototype, which boasts numerous unique features. In December 1956 Daimler sold '85004' to a Mr Packwood Husselber. He was followed in 1957 by John Silverstone and in 1959 by Mr John Spurling, who would keep the Daimler until 1968. It was then that the car was rediscovered in Wisborough Green Garage and purchased from John Spurling by Mr Terence Reilly, who sold it on to Mr John Beal of Shoreham-by-Sea in Sussex. The Roadster prototype then disappeared from view until John Beal advertised it for sale in the Daimler & Lanchester Owners' Club's Driving Member magazine in April 1980. Apparently, there were no takers and the car remained with John Beal until 2009 when he sold it to Harold Wilson. The prototype came with its original logbook and after collection was got running the following day. 1927 Lanchester 23hp Saloon Limousine Coachwork by Maythorn Registration no. UA 2000 Chassis no. 3497 Engine no. 3504•Regular attendee of Lanchester Register, VSCC and other events•Engine upgraded (electric water pump)•Safety upgrades (flashing indicators, brake lights)Lanchester recommenced civilian production after WWI with a single model, the luxurious 40hp, which was even more expensive than the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, but like their rivals at Crewe was soon offering a smaller and cheaper alternative. Introduced in 1923 at the Olympia Motor Show, the 21hp newcomer was powered by a 3.0-litre overhead-camshaft straight six. The latter was Lanchester's first engine with a detachable cylinder head while the conventional (as opposed to epicyclic) gearbox and four-wheel brakes were likewise new departures for the firm. In 1926 the engine was enlarged to 3.3 litres (rated at 23hp) and in this form the model continued in production until 1931. The top speed was comfortably in excess of 60mph.Equipped with the 3.3-litre engine, this 23hp model was built in 1927 and registered in 1928. Its elegant Maythorn coachwork includes rotating occasional seats, drawers beneath the front seats, curved glass panels and a vertically opening glass division. Its first owner was Mr Wilson, an architect, who drove the car regularly until WW2. In 1954 the engine was restored and all other components thoroughly checked. In 1963 the Lanchester was sold to Roger Halliwell of Halifax. It is believed to have been licensed every year since, attending many shows and rallies including annual Manchester/Blackpool tours, and being used as a wedding car. Three vintage silver-plated telephones were installed in 1970 (currently unconnected), with aluminium wheel discs being fitted to the wire wheels that same year. The Lanchester was restored by Roger Halliwell between 1988 and 2006, the engine being rebored and rebuilt with new pistons, main bearings, big-end bearings and gudgeon pins. Other works included refurbishment of the front wheel bearings, brake drums (new), brake linings, radiator (renewed). In more recent years the electrics were rewired, with new ignition switch, distributor, fuse box, 12v connector, brake lights and flashing indicators. In addition, the engine has been fitted with a 12v electric water pump with manual switch. This luxurious car is ready to use with fresh anti-freeze added this summer. Some bills are available.The car comes complete with the following: handbook; jack and wooden blocks; wire wheel hub nut spanner; wheel disc spanner; complete second spare wheel and tyre; spare paint for bodywork; and a complete, new set of The Lanchester Legacy (four volumes). 1947 Dodge Power Wagon 4x4 Flat Bed Truck Registration no. SXS 130 Chassis no. 83902983•Imported from Montana, USA in 2021•Previous single-family ownership•3.8-litre six-cylinder petrol engine•An older restoration•Recent braking system overhaulIntroduced in 1946 as the very first 4x4 truck produced for the civilian market, the Power Wagon was mechanically derived from Dodge's 1942-1945 セ-ton WC series trucks. Used in WW2 as a 'go anywhere' truck and command and control vehicle, the WC was extremely popular with returning GIs. Dodge recognised the potential, and indeed demand, for a civilian four-wheel drive truck and manufacture commenced in March 1946. Known as the WDX General Purpose truck: the 'W' was a continuation of the 1941-1947 model series while 'D' stood for 1-ton and 'X' indicated four-wheel drive. Registered as 1947, this Dodge Power Wagon was later identified by Steve Arndt of Vintage Power Wagons in Fairfield, Iowa to be a first series (1945-47) WDX Model 1-ton Civilian Power Wagon. On file is a dating letter from the American Auto Club UK confirming the year of manufacture as 1947 and the power unit as a 230ci (3,770cc) six-cylinder petrol engine. Distinguishing features include four rectangular stake pockets on each side of the rear bed for a hard cover, and a round speedometer with rectangular gauges either side that have the instrument lettering on the glass instead of the face of the gauges. Imported by the present owner from Montana in 2021, having had single family ownership from new, this Long Box Power Wagon was restored some 30 years ago and more recently has benefited from a new battery and all new brake wheel cylinders and shoes from Vintage Power Wagons. Although not driven extensively in its current ownership, the truck performed well when tested on private land. We are advised that the 94bhp sidevalve six runs well, testifying to the toughness and longevity required by the municipal authorities, fire departments, ranchers, farmers and others who bought these Dodge 4x4 trucks. 1930 Austin Seven Sports Registration no. TM 6701 Chassis no. B1-1010 Engine no. M-106861Introduced in 1922, the Austin Seven chassis soon attracted the attentions of independent coachbuilders, many of whom devised sporting alternatives not offered by the factory. One such was Gordon England, who used his prior experience of aircraft manufacturing technology to design a lightweight yet rigid body that made extensive use of plywood, which was covered in fabric. Gordon England was soon supplying bodies to Austin under contract, which has to be seen as testament to their quality. This car has been re-bodied with open two-seater sports coachwork believed to be by Gordon England. One of the prior owner's favourite cars, the Seven was used regularly and taken to many shows. Sold to the current vendor at Bonhams' Beaulieu sale in September 2016 (Lot 442), it had been laid-up in storage for the preceding two years and recieved a lot of recommissioning after purchase to make it useable including a new SU carburettor and SU fuel pump in addition to general maintenance and safety checks. A new battery was fitted recently. Since its acquisition by our vendor the Seven has made numerous jaunts from its Oxford home to Prescott, Goodwood, Wales and Cornwall over the years – 'slow and steady vintage fun'. 1934 Triumph Gloria 10hp Sports Tourer Registration no. AER 492 Chassis no. 42277 Engine no. SS98306•Landmark Triumph sporting car•Developed by Donald Healey•Only four owners from new•Off the road 1968-2014•Restored in 2014Developed by the great Donald Healey, the Gloria, more than any other model, established Triumph's reputation as a builder of fine sporting cars; taking its name – it is said – from one of Selfridge's fashion models, who was photographed with the cars for publicity purposes. Standard-Triumph's managing director, Colonel Claude Holbrook, wanted to move the company away from the small cars that had underpinned its success in the 1920s, aiming to take a slice of the medium-size sporting-car market dominated by Riley. Indeed, ex-Riley employees would be instrumental in the Gloria project, designer Charles Ridley having been recruited from them, as was Donald Healey. Healey was quoted as saying: 'I was attracted by the Gloria project, which seemed better than Riley's own Nine... My first job was cleaning up the Gloria range, which was just about ready for production.' Introduced in 1933, the Gloria employed a conventional cruciform-braced chassis, under-slung at the rear and equipped with all-round 12' hydraulic brakes, on which was mounted low, streamlined coachwork of an elegance not previously associated with the marque. According to Holbrook, the Gloria was 'built to an idea... modern in conception, revealing lines that never before been achieved'. And few would deny that, once it had been 'cleaned up' by Healey, the Gloria was indeed most handsome. The four- and six-cylinder IOE engines were built by Triumph to designs by Coventry Climax, who supplied the raw castings, while the four-speed synchromesh gearbox and spiral bevel rear axle were supplied by ENV. In tuned guise fitted with twin carburettors, the 10hp 1,087cc inlet-over-exhaust four produced 46bhp at 4,600rpm; thus equipped, the Gloria Special Tourer was good for 75mph.This rare British sports car is understood to have had only four owners and had been off the road since 1968 when it was restored in 2014 at a cost of around £12,000. G33851•An older restoration•Present family ownership since 2003•Engine professionally rebuilt circa 20 years ago•Kept in good running order•Enthusiastically campaignedThis Austin 10hp two-seat tourer - with additional dickey seat - was first registered in March 1934, benefiting from the updates made during 1933 including an X-braced chassis, 12-volt electrics, trafficators, chromed bonnet catches, and a spare wheel cover. Aside from the Austin spending its life in and around the Southampton area, little is known of its history prior to 1970 when it was discovered on a smallholding 'in a dilapidated state' by a Mr D Shepherd, who proceeded to treat the Ten to an extensive body-off restoration. The chassis and mechanicals were stripped and restored by Bob Gentle of Southampton and the interior and roof retrimmed by Southern Upholstery.In 1974, immediately following the restoration's completion, 'JY 3195' came a close second in concours competition, winning the first rosette of many more to come. In 1975 the car won the 'Pride of Ownership Cup' at the Austin 10 National Rally and was Outright Winner at the Southsea Rally.Due to the owner's ill health, the Austin was dry stored again from 1986 onwards, but was kept running and roadworthy, before being sold to Peter Nash Specialist Cars from whom it was bought by the current vendor's family in February 2003. The car was purchased as a gift for their daughter's eighth birthday (yes, eighth not eighteenth); it was something fun that she could be taken out in and would be able to drive once she was old enough. The Austin has been loved and cherished for the last 20 years, the engine being rebuilt by Bob Glenister at Available Austins of Coventry within the first year of ownership due to a cracked block. This work and associated repairs cost almost £7,500. Since then the owners have undertaken most of the maintenance themselves. A couple of years ago, for reasons the owners cannot remember, they changed the named keeper on the V5C. In the present ownership the Austin has been used extensively, including a run to the Netherlands in 2010 where it won the 'Piston Cup' for 1st place at the Austin Ten Drivers Club weekend (trophy included). Sadly, the father of the family recently passed away and the mother and daughter feel that now is the time 'JY 3195' passed to an enthusiastic new custodian. 1929 Rolls-Royce 20hp Landaulette Coachwork by Connaught Registration no. UU 6737 Chassis no. GEN14 Engine no. E5J (see text)•Fitted with a 20/25hp engine circa 1998•Present ownership since 2010•Engine rebuilt in 2011•Extensive restoration since acquisitionChassis number 'GEN14' was first registered on 3rd August 1929. According to John Fasal's book The Rolls Royce Twenty, the cars first owner was an R. Moreland. The car was subsequently owned by a Colonel Page (up to 1957). Including the current vendor, seven further owners are listed, the third of whom, Michael Horner, purchased car in 1968 from Gerald Millward and sold it in 1985. During Horner's ownership the Rolls-Royce was stored unused. After frost damage the fourth owner on the list, Philip Cordery, replaced the original engine with 'E5J' from 20/25hp chassis 'GSY63', a former hearse belonging to Mascot Motors, which he purchased in 1998 from The Real Car Co in North Wales. The original engine number for this car was 'K8T' (this engine comes with the car and will need to be collected from the vendor post sale). Our vendor purchased the Rolls-Royce in 2010.Following a big-end bearing failure in July 2011, the engine was rebuilt by former Rolls-Royce apprentice Peter Males. Robinson Engineering in Ferndown re-bored the cylinder block and relined it back to standard, while further refurbishment was carried out by Silver Lady Services, who dismantled the car prior to respraying and reassembly. Smarts Body Shop of Ferndown repainted the car using RM Ming Blue, while the interior retrim was entrusted to K Baggs Trimming of Parkstone, who used materials appropriate for the car's age including Connolly leather to the front. Other items refurbished included the starter motor, dynamo, magneto, distributor, carburettor, Autovac, klaxon, and water pump (rebuilt prior to the engine rebuild). New clutch plates were fitted and the gearbox oil replenished, and the radiator cleaned out and re-soldered where needed. An oil filter and water thermostat were fitted, which were not part of the original specification but useful upgrades nonetheless. The car was rewired at the same time as the engine rebuild and the dashboard instruments all overhauled. The brake servo was overhauled shortly thereafter. The Rolls-Royce returned to the road in March 2012 (at 72,814 miles on the odometer) and our vendor advises us that the engine has been totally reliable since the rebuild. Two original keys for the bonnet locks are included (the locks on both sides are the same so either key fits both). The original doorhandle locks do not work, the doors being secured by padlocks, while the driver's sliding window has a piece of timber to insert in its internal track to prevent it being opened from the outside. Accompanying documentation includes copies of factory paperwork; old-style logbooks; numerous receipts for the engine rebuild and rewiring; aV5C document; and a quantity of expired MoTs dating back to 1996.
