GUERNSEY 1944 Exceedingly scarce wartime programme for a match played at Beau Sejour, Guernsey, 31/5/44. The Amherstian Players v The Lyric Variety Stars. At the time , Guernsey was still occupied by the German forces and paper was in very short supply. Single sheet programme for this Charity game and both teams included male and female players which was banned by the FA at this time. Included amongst the players was Gertie Duquemin who was possibly related to Len Duquemin who went on to play for Spurs. Two punch-holes but no print affected. Exceedingly rare programme and very unlikely that many copies survive. Reg Warley was left back for the Players and unknown to the Germans he was the typist for the Guernsey Secret Underground Press which kept the islanders informed of the progress of the War via the strictly forbidden BBC. If he had been caught , he would face the death penalty. Programme is generally good condition. Generally good

FRANK R FOSTER- ASHES HERO Two postcard photographs of England and Warwickshire Cricketer Frank R Foster with notes in his hand on the reverse and signed by him in 1951. He was the forgotten hero who after a miraculous year in 1911 died bankrupt in a psychiatric hospital in 1958, alone and touched by madness. In 1911 he became Warwickshire Captain and led them to the Championship scoring 1614 runs and taking 141 wickets. He went on tour to Australia and despite losing the first Test, England won the Ashes 4-1 with Foster taking 32 wickets and scoring 226 runs. Unfortunately he suffered a compound leg fracture in a motor cycle accident in 1915 and his cricket career was effectively over. Gradually his life declined including gambling, huge debts and various unsavoury incidents and in 1946 he was banned from Edgbaston for his behaviour and by 1950 he had been admitted to Northamptonshire Lunatic asylum and he died there 8 years later. Accompanied by printed text recounting the Naval Actions in the form of letters from the Captains of the vessels depicted, to their respective commanding officers. Each ‘Plate’ is annotated by the artist’s hand, naming the vessel and it’s captain thus: “This Plate of His Majesty’s Ship _______ is humbly inscribed to Capt ________ by his most obedient & very humble servant Sam Owen” Samuel Owen (1768-1857) was a prolific marine artist of considerable talent yet until recently his biographical history was rather obscure. The quality of detail and the obvious nautical knowledge shown in his works implied that he must have spent time as a mariner. Now, new research has confirmed this important aspect of the artist’s life.Owen spent most of his life afloat, starting as an 'Ordinary Seaman' in the Navy 1788, and a midshipman by 1790. Later he sailed with the East India Company. He became a Sea Captain, a Free Mariner and the owner of several merchantmen. Owen was of humble birth and we have no record of how his artistic career began or whether he received any formal instruction. However in later life he exhibited his accomplished paintings at the Royal Academy and with the ‘Associated Artists in Water-Colours’ of which he was a member. He also provided the illustrations for many publications, including the London Gazette and the Naval Chronicle. He had a particular brilliance for authentically capturing ships at sea. His clear understanding of seamanship is very apparent in this collection. Only an artist who has witnessed first hand the dramatic and terrible scenes of a naval sea battle of this period could recreate them on paper with such accuracy. This marvelous collection of naval works was collaboration between Owen as artist and W.Wells the engraver. There is a very similar collection held by the British Museum but we can find no other examples of these works ever being published, so we conclude that this was an unrealised project.

A late Victorian mahogany and crossbanded desk, with brass gallery to the superstructure, fitted two drawers, on tapering square legs and spade feet According to The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700 - 1840 (Christopher Gilbert), this eminent firm of cabinet-makers and "upholders" (sic) was founded by a "Jn McLane" from premises near Leicester Square in 1770. Remaining based in London, the firm produced fine cabinets and desks in the "French taste" influenced by the style of Louis XVI, using cast and metal mounts. Of the highest calibre, the firm was instructed by leading connoisseurs such as 5th Earl of Jersey to provide furniture for his house at Middleton Park, Oxfordshire and for his London mansion in Berkeley Square. Mentioned in Thomas Sheraton's "Cabinet Dictionary" of 1803 as "Mr Mclean in Mary-le-bone Street.... who finishes these small articles in the neatest manner" he consistently displayed a delicate design, often inspired by French prototypes and the frequent use of dark wood as a foil to the chased gilt brass mounts or inlay. As a result of this, many unlabelled pieces can be safely attributed to John McLean.

Lorimer designed, amongst other projects, a series of cottages in Colinton, Edinburgh, the designs of which included garden layout, interior design and furniture. He went on to work on larger houses in Scotland including Ardkinglas, Dunrobin Castle and Lennoxlove House. The frames are sound with no apparent repair, but require a good clean with rope seats intact. The seat cushions are beyond use or repair.
