Luddite Interest Rare And Documentary George III Creamware Mug, Marked And Dated. '' John & Hannah Lindley Nail Maker, Mirfield April 25th 1810 '' Height 5 InchesAuthor F G Pilling ''One Last Time'' Mirfield Research Edition 2003Another thriving business at Wasps Nest was that of John Lindley a nail maker, but there was a darker side to his life, he made pikes for the Luddites, drilled and marched with them and kept alive the movement in the district, he was later taken by the Dumb Steeple as you will later read, he did his time and returned to Wasp Nest and started up his business again. My second sister married his grandson. This John Lindley was taken along with another Mirfield man, called Ben Barker at the Dumb Steeple, one night in November, 1824. They had way laid two men who were on their way to Leeds, they had wounded them with the pikes that John Lindley had made, subsequently they died, Lindley and Barker were arrested and tried at Leeds Assizes, but a re-trial was ordered and they were again tried, this time at York, the men who were killed were suspected of being informers against the local Luddites who at that time, 12 years after the Rawfold massacre, were very much underground, although the two arrested men were very active and kept alive the protests against the introduction of the machinery that they thought was to put them out of a job. They were sentenced at York to transportation for 14 years to Van Diemansland, now Tasmania, usually an informer would be taken, along with any other suspects, to a pre-arranged rendezvous, where, under a threat of death by shooting, they were made to swear on oath that they would not disclose what they knew, and they would thereafter, make any one that they suspected, swear the same oath that they had taken, under the same threats and penalties. For some reason the plan was aborted, the insurgents withdrew and returned to their homes and only four men were arrested, after the event. Four men were prosecuted as a result of the events on 1 April. John Peacock and John Lindley were transported to Van Diemen's Land, and Nathaniel Buckely and Thomas Blackburn served two years imprisonment before being pardoned. What little of parity & public spirit you have amongst your constituency you owe to the free trade agitation. NGUYEN THANH BINH (VIETNAMESE b 1954), SCHOOLGIRLS oil on canvas, signed 80cm x 100cm Framed. Note: Nguyen Thanh Binh was born in 1954 in Hanoi. Binh likens his preference for simplicity in composition and design to his own way of life, citing he wants to express the happiness and sorrow of the Vietnamese souls in his works. Binh also does not just see females for their physical forms but is inspired by the sense of each woman, that elusive feminine mystery that can change like the wind. The sense of movement each woman has when she sits, stands, or lies down, whether dancing or playing sport, tells a story about who she is as an individual as well as other stories when she is with other people. Although Binh has been influenced by western art and its aesthetics, his art falls well within the philosophical and aesthetic sphere of Asia. From 1985 Binh's work started reaching a wider international audience through solo shows and group exhibitions in Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Thailand, Japan (Tokyo), South Korea, Australia, USA (including New York & Miami), France (Paris), Belgium and in London. Binh is a member of Vietnam Fine Art Association.

John Lennon, In His Own Write, Jonathan Cape 30 Bedford Square London, early edition, signed by John Lennon to the opening page in blue ink, the opposing side inscribed in another hand 'Foyles Luncheon, Dorchester Hotel 23rd April 1964'. Note: This whimsical book of surrealist poems, drawings and short stories was the first solo endeavour by any of The Beatles. Originally published in March 1964, it was a huge success – reportedly selling 50,000 copies on the first day of its release in England. To celebrate the books success, Lennon was invited to a literary luncheon hosted by Foyle’s at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in London, for which he took a break from filming A Hard Day’s Night. Also in attendance were the Earl of Arran, Arthur Askey, Harry Secombe, Mary Quant, Helen Shapiro and a crowd of press people amongst others. Unfortunately, Lennon was not aware that he was expected to make a speech or that the event was anything more than a casual lunch; and according to his wife Cynthia they were both painfully hungover. When the moment arrived, with the press and attendees waiting with bated breath to hear from the ‘intelligent’ Beatle, a terrified John Lennon stood and said "Er, thank you all very much, and God bless you." Apparently the disappointment was palpable and it was seen as a typical Lennon snub of the establishment, but he tried to make up for it by signing copies of his book – including this volume for a relative of the current vendor who was in attendance.

John Pace of Bury St Edmunds - a rare year-going skeleton timepiece, mid-19th century, the arched chamfered plates with five turned pillars, gilt Arabic chapter ring above interlaced rings for weeks of the year and date, shaped blue steel hands, the twin chain driven fusees each with two spring barrels, anchor escapement, five and six spoke wheels, all raised on an oval plinth engraved 'John Pace Bury St Edmunds' to the front, h.40cm, all upon an ebonised oval stand with glass dome (dome cracked). Notes: John Pace (1783-1867) was born in Whitechapel and hailed from an eminent Quaker family of clock and watchmakers who had been registered as working in the area from at least the 1630s. By 1804 he is recorded as working in Bury St Edmunds, and later more specifically in Abbeygate Street (No.19) from 1823 until 1855. In a town bristling with renowned clockmakers, Pace managed to rapidly gain a good reputation for his inventiveness as well as for the quality of his work. His ingenious nature led to him patenting an illuminated ‘night timepiece’ (No.6506) in 1833, and creating elaborate skeleton clocks such as this example. However, Pace was clearly happy to work on all manner of clocks, watches and barometers, and formed a strong working relationship with Bury St Edmunds gunsmith and clockmaker Benjamin Parker – sharing design and precision work between them to produce excellent pieces. During this time he married Frances Rebecca Hancock of Mitcham with whom he had four children. Pace was also a leading figure in the Bury St Edmunds Society of Friends and was secretary of the local Quaker meetings between 1827-1832. He is also recorded as being Alderman for the North Ward in 1843 and secretary of the Mechanics Institution which was based in Crown Street from 1824. By the 1850s Pace was at the peak of his powers, and as such exhibited three examples of his work at the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations held at the Crystal Palace in 1851. This comprised of two clocks and a barometer; one of these being a skeleton clock which ran for three years on just one winding. He is referred to in the Exhibition catalogue as “ Pace, J. Bury St Edmunds, - Inventor, Designer & Manufacturer ”. Pace moved to Chelmsford after the death of his wife, where he himself died in 1867. His obituary in the Norwich & Bury Post describes him as being “ widely esteemed outside the boundaries of the religious community to which he belonged, at a time when members of the Society of Friends suffered in various ways …”. It also demonstrates how Pace’s scientific mind didn’t stop at timepieces, as he is remembered as being the first shopkeeper in Bury “ to substitute gas-light for the dimness of former days ”. Such was his reputation, that even by the end of the 19 th century his clocks were still considered highly desirable. The auction at Hengrave Hall in 1897 included “ A fine old early English striking clock… made by John Pace, Bury ”. Two silver watches by Pace are also included in the world-famous Gershom Parkington timepiece collection on display at Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds. This particular clock found its way into the collection of Joseph Maumus Meraux (1922-1992), a major landowner in Louisiana, whose collection of ‘Rare and Unusual’ clocks were sold at Sotheby’s on 28 th June 1993; this lot being No.396.Condition report: In running order.
