‘The natives are utterly uninteresting naked savages’ GORDON CHARLES GEORGE: (1833-1885) British Major General, known as 'Chinese Gordon'. An interesting A.L.S., C. G. Gordon, two pages, 8vo, Entrance of Sobat River, 15th July 1874, to Newsome. Gordon writes a social letter to his friend in London, in part, 'I am all right, and in good spirits. I am glad to say this is a good sign for when a man gets depressed he is likely to get fever…..I have had no news since I left Cairo except one batch of old letters……I never was so glad as I am at not having a large staff. The trouble I have had with the little one I have got was far more than I have had with the slavers. There is very little shooting as far as I can see. You come across large herds of Antelopes, but they are soon off, and are very shy. You see Ostriches & Giraffes, but if you kill one, what is the use of it? The natives are utterly uninteresting naked savages, nothing more than animals who are always hungry. My great amusement is my Doctoring the soldiers. I am now a pretty good medical man for the ordinary diseases. I go to bed as every one else does at sunset (the mosquitoes will not let you sit up) & rise at sunrise. Life ebbs away quietly and although I cannot expect to do much, I think I shall do something towards the welfare of these parts, at any rate I have made them more accessible by moving about quickly & showing people that they are not so far off as they have appeared to be'. A letter of good content. ‘It is said the Prince of Peace has been beheaded and that the King has resigned his crown which is said to be (ad interim) on the brow of the Prince of Asturias’ BERESFORD WILLIAM: (1768-1854) Anglo-Irish General in the British Army, and a Marshal in the Portuguese Army, who fought alongside the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War. Beresford led the failed British invasion of Buenos Aires in 1808. A good, lengthy A.L.S., W. C. Beresford, seven pages, folio, Madeira, 18th & 19th April 1808, to Sir William Sidney Smith in Rio de Janeiro. Beresford writes an informative letter, expressing disappointment and regret at his correspondent's sudden departure and continuing, in part, 'If anything goes forward in your part of the world you may be sure I'll hasten to the Spanish port that lies within your command…..I shall feel most gratified & happy provided some one there goes and wipes away the stigma that late occurrences has left upon our name in that quarter. I am rebut to giving you the names of all those our friends there, it would fill this paper, for with very slight & few exceptions all the Creole part are such, and the Clergy of that description more so than the laity, but all upon the principle of our assisting their independence…..You will easily conceive that among the numbers that wish for emancipation from the Spanish yoke there must be some more forward and adventurous than others…..Pina who came from Buenos Ayres with me and who was Linieres secretary is now at Rio de Janeiro and is most capable to let you into the characters of all on the Rio de la Plata…..His conduct in leaving his country was from the purest & most patriotic motives and not from interested ones, nor could I ever prevail upon him to accept any pecuniary remuneration for the service he did me…..Since your leaving us we have had a merchant importer from England and have seen papers to the 22nd Ult. General Whitelock's defence was closed and the Court Martial was to be laid before the King…..His defence was very indifferent.….In fact he has left everything to be decided by the evidences on the prosecution and I do not see how he can escape with less than cashiering. Passengers which came in….say that the expedition to the Baltic had been countermanded. If this is true I conclude the King of Sweden has been obliged to join the confederacy. There had been some skirmishes in Finland between his troops and the Russians & the latter had advanced. I think it is fortunate if he has joined the confederacy as I do not see how he could have resisted, and I rejoice in it as it will leave us a considerable disposable Force and there is now nowhere but South America to employ it. By those who go in the Hydra you will learn the reports of the tragedy performed or about to be performed in Spain…..It is said the Prince of Peace has been beheaded and that the King has resigned his crown which is said to be (ad interim) on the brow of the Prince of Asturias. What truth there is in all this it is not easy to discern but we may draw from it there has been an uproar at Madrid and as the instigators to it can not be very doubtful we may conclude that whosever blood first flowed was but a prelude to much more and that finally the royal family will all suffer……I have not had a syllable from His Majesty's ministers…..I can not but conclude they are waiting intelligence from Rio de Janeiro…..The enclosed I wrote yesterday morning and in the evening came here…..the long looked for dispatches & their contents…..were not to me unpleasant or unwelcome. They contain the new arrangements for this Island, and by which the civil government is to be restored to the Portuguese…..I am promised to be immediately recalled and with having hopes of being shortly employed…..but where heaven knows. I have not seen any newspapers but it appears the news of the Swedes having made a peace is premature, it is however wished for by all in England, and must I conceive shortly take place, in the mean time I am certain our fleet proceeds to the Baltic, but I do not learn any army goes with it……Here then I think as late news from the Mediterranean as could be brought via Holland from England'. In a postscript Beresford further informs his correspondent, 'Poor Lord Claud H[amilton] is I fear in a very hopeless way. We must not be surprised to hear at any moment of his departure….' With integral address leaf, also signed ('Maj. Genl. Beresford') and bearing the remnants of a red wax seal (small area of paper loss where originally broken). Some light, minor overall age wear, VGSir William Sidney Smith (1764-1840) British Admiral and intelligence officer who served in the American and French revolutionary wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleon Bonaparte, reminiscing later in his life, said of Smith: 'That man made me miss my destiny'.In October 1807, Spain and France signed a treaty to divide Portugal between them. The following month Smith was appointed to command an expedition to Lisbon, either to assist the Portuguese in resisting the attack or to destroy the Portuguese fleet and blockade the harbour at Lisbon should that be unsuccessful. Smith arranged for the Portuguese fleet to sail for Rio de Janeiro, at that time a Portuguese colony. He was involved in planning an attack on the Spanish colonies in South America, in combination with the Portuguese, contrary to his orders, but he was recalled to Great Britain in 1809 before any of the plans could be carried out.Beresford occupied Madeira, in the name of the King of Portugal, as Governor and Commander-in-Chief for six months from December 1807.

L.S., Rybinski, two pages, small 4to, Paris, 20th May 1847, to Doctor Charles Robert Berr, in French. Rybinski responds to his correspondent's letter and confirms that he has searched the army records for some trace of the presentation of the national award which Berr claims to have, although adding that all of the searches were fruitless and that the decree of the National Government, in not awarding the decoration to all doctors without exception, does not authorise him to grant the reward whilst the army is inactive. Rybinski further states, however, that he has 'taken note of your request in order to be able to testify to you the case that I make of the services rendered to humanity and to my country, at the first opportunity, when the Polish army can resume its active state'. OLIVIER LAURENCE: (1907-1989) English actor, Academy Award winner. A good A.L.S., Larry, four pages, 8vo, Brighton, Sussex, 'Mon. 5th or 4th or something Sept' n.y. (1966), to 'Darling Angel Girl' (Madeline Sherwood). Olivier thanks his correspondent for their angelic letter and clipping and continues 'Joanie is making a v slow, but thank God sure recovery. The little one acts like it had had Joanie, if you know what I mean & had thought but nothing of it. Actually it was quite a tussle pulling the little thing through. But she's marvellous now, & as I say Joanie is really beginning to perk up, so all on that old horizon begins to take on a shiny sweet glow again. The little one had to be called Julia, on account of (after three days of labour) having to be a Caesarean - a built of a built in joke that I suppose (like on the inside of Doug Fairbanks Jnr's lavatory seats) but what can you think of when you're trying to run a National (classical) Theatre?'. Olivier further thanks Sherwood for her news regarding Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon and expresses his disappointment that they won't be travelling to England ('there's nothing like a European visit that a good script at home won't cure') and also writes 'Darling One. I wish I could tell you how much I love to hear from you. I get so boiled up in this job, my brain feels fried most of the time (lot of culinary analogues but you know what I mean) even if I don't write back much, it really does do me good to hear from you my love, it truly does. COLLINGWOOD CUTHBERT: (1748-1810) British Vice Admiral, notable as a partner with Lord Nelson in several of the British victories during the Napoleonic Wars. An excellent collection of eight A.Ls.S. and eight Ls.S., Collingwood, thirty five pages (total), 4to and folio, at sea ('Ocean', off Cadiz), January 1806 - July 1808, to various correspondents, each of them British Consuls at Morocco, comprising James Matra, John Ross and James Green. Collingwood writes an interesting series of letters regarding British relationships with Morocco (and the role of Jews in contract negotiations for supplies) and the Emperor, also making references to the French and Spanish armies, peace negotiations in Paris etc., in part, 'I received the favour of your letter by Captain Pearse - and am much obliged by the communication of intelligence which accompanied it - you know that only a certain degree of credit is to be given to any intelligence received from the French - for besides the….whole nation….composing stories - they have an interest in deceiving us - however I ascertained their being at Teneriffe - and I have information of their movements from that time (17 Decr.)…….the story of their having captured the Magnamine's convoy was a fabrication - the Magnamine being in England and unfit for sea…….You know the fleet is always at sea - it must be at sea - and the health can only be maintained by a supply of refreshment……and trust with confidence that this important object will have its due weight and consideration with you' (A.L.S., 15th January 1806), 'I have just received and send you by the Amphion a letter from His Majesty to the Emperor of Morocco, with a great quantity of valuable articles sent by His Majesty as presents to the Emperor……The letter from Lord Castlereagh to Lord Nelson which accompanied these Packages, I am afraid was sent to England, amongst His Lordship's papers…..I hope in this negociation which is the subject of His Majesty's Letter, that a free and open use of the Country may be obtained for the Fleet as far as relates to the procuring refreshment and stock, that the exorbitant duty of 26 Dollars a head on the cattle may either be discontinued or reduced to the same terms on which the Garrison of Gibraltar is supplied……I am informed that the most friendly dispositions are entertained by the Moorish Government and the people in general towards the English, and that the difficulties to which we are principally exposed in receiving supplies proceed from the Jews who……turn every circumstance to profit, and by limiting the quantity of stock exported, raise its price to an extravagant height - perhaps these people might be softened by a proper kind of attention' (L.S. to Matra, 11th January 1806), '…..if you can procure me 4 or 5 dozen fowls, with some eggs and a few vegetables, to be forwarded by the Duchess of Bedford, I will be much obliged…..' (L.S. to Ross, 22nd April 1806), 'I have received your letter…..in which you informed me of the French mission. I will be glad if you can now tell me what the result of it was - if the nature of their business has transpired & what success they met with' (A.L.S. to Ross, 12th May 1806), 'I have received your letter…..with….the copy of your correspondence with…..the Consul of Portugal. I am very sorry when these causes of complaint occur, and am disposed to make some allowance to the Portuguese for the circumstances of the times. The influence which France has obtained in Portugal we must expect in some degree to feel the effect of……I have no doubt that had the Portuguese Consul refused the requisition of the French for a vessel to bring their people round to Tangier, it should have been alleged against him as a high offence……I have great satisfaction in hearing that the French did not obtain the object of their mission' (L.S. to Ross, 15th May 1806), 'You arrive, Sir, at a period when there happily exists the most perfect harmony and good understanding with the Emperor, and with the Barbary states in general……The Fleet has always been very plentifully supplied with Beef and refreshments, but the duty paid on the cattle sent to us is extravagantly high (26 dollars a head) while the French and Spanish agents have lately concluded a treaty by which they are only charged 5 or 6 Dollars a head…..If at a reasonable time by a temperate negociation with the Emperor's ministers you could get the duty reduced it would be very desirable……I have on all occasions endeavoured to introduce to their consideration (the Moors) how much they have to apprehend of danger to the tranquillity of their Country by the extension of the French power' (L.S. to Green, 15th July 1806), 'I have received the favour of your letter informing me of the rights of neutrality of the Barbary coast by some of the Spanish Privateers……The fact is that the Privateers boats on both sides are not very regular in their conduct, not very observant of the laws of neutrality when it suits their convenience or their interest to break them……The reprisal made by the English boat - I cannot condemn after his Captures being taken from him as they were - those things should not be encouraged - but if they were put a stop to by authority - or granting passports to Spanish vessels - the spirit of that coasting warfare would be damped - and it is certainly very advantageous to Gibraltar - as it employs a great number of Ruffians who would otherwise be acting against us' (A.L.S. to Green, 31st July 1806), 'The most material business we have with him (the Emperor of Morocco) is the obtaining supplies, which we now do in abundance, but at a most enormous price…..I am led to believe the high duty demanded of us is an extortion by the Jews and others who are engaged in the contract…..I have not heard from England since the beginning of August, but have little expectation of any favourable termination of the negociation at Paris' (L.S. to Green, 14th September 1806), 'I have received your letter……and am sorry to find the Emperor should have been less accommodating than you had reason to expect……but I am afraid remonstrating with him on the subject will not avail us & on the contrary, should he take it into his head to be displeased he may still impose higher duties, for these people are governed less by principles of interest than of momentary passion. He knew the duty was not paid in Gun Powder, but meant it to be understood as threatening that he would raise it, to what could not be paid……Lord Lauderdale was still at Paris, but with little hope of Peace' (L.S. to Green, 14th October 1806), '…..the Emperor and his Governors are not very liberal of any thing but fair promises - but they are a people who will always require a certain address to manage - and what we get - and is so necessary to us, is only to be done by yielding a little to their caprices…..I am glad you could accommodate the affair of the….escape - but the owners of the boats should be informed that if their crews do illegal things in Barbary - they must be subject to the law of that country - and not expect under…..the English flag to be shielded from the punishment they deserve - being in an English vessel protects them in their lawful pursuits - not in the violations of the Law of any Country' (A.L.S. to Green, 17th November 1806),OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THIS LOT CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED HERE. Please contact us directly for further information.

NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. A very good L.S., `Np´, one page, 4to, Fontainebleau, 22nd January 1813, to Prince Eugene Napoleon ('Mon fils') (“My son”), in French. Napoleon forwards to Eugene de Beauharnais an important information he has just received and according to it sends urgent orders, stating `Mon fils, vous garderez le Comte Dumas avec toute l´administration. Renvoyez sur Magdebourg tous les médecins et chirurgiens inútiles´ (“My son, you will keep Count Dumas with all the administration. We have not yet been told that Desgenettes is dead; we only know this indirectly. Appoint among the doctors who are in the army a doctor to perform the functions of chief doctor. Contain all the hospitals within the strongholds. Send all useless doctors and surgeons back to Magdeburg”) Napoleon was wrongly reported on Desgenettes´ death who in fact had been taken prisoner by the Russians on December 10th, a month before this letter was written. A letter of very interesting content. VG Eugene de Beauharnais (1781-1824) Duke of Leuchtenberg. French Prince, the first child and only son of Empress Josephine, the first wife of Napoleon I, by her marriage to Alexandre de Beauharnais. Napoleon formally adopted Eugene as his son. Regarded by historians as the ablest of Napoleon's relatives, Prince Eugene commanded the Army of Italy and served as Viceroy of Italy under his stepfather. René Nicolas Dufriche-Desgenettes (1762-1837) Baron Desgenettes. One of the most renowned French military doctors. Desgenettes was the chief doctor of the Grande Armée and was present in Egypt, Russia and Waterloo under Napoleon, later appointed chief doctor of Les Invalides.Desgenettes was taken prisoner at Vilnius on 10th December 1812 during the retreat from Russia, he was the only one captured that day mentioned by name as worth being freed. Tsar Alexander I freed him when he heard of the care he had taken of Russian soldiers and had him escorted by his Cossack guard to the French forward-lines at on 20th March 1813.

[NAPOLEON] BERTRAND HENRI GATIEN & MONTHOLON CHARLES TRISTAN: An exceptional archive of seven letters of historical content, being original manuscript copies of the letters written to Empress Marie Louise of Austria and to Prince Metternich, in Vienna, by Generals Bertrand and Montholon in their capacity as executors of Napoleon´s will. All the letters are written in the months following Napoleon´s death at Saint Helena and report on the Emperor´s last will and his last instructions to his loyal Generals. The archive comprises one A.L., by Montholon, two pages, folio, London, 7th July 1821, to Empress Marie Louise; one A.L.S. by Bertrand `Le C.te Bertrand´, also signed by Montholon `Le Cte de Montholon´, one page, 4to, Paris, 10th February 1822, to Empress Marie Louise; one L.S. by Bertrand, two pages, folio, 12th May 1822, to Empress Marie Louise; one A.L., by General Bertrand, two pages, folio, to Prince Metternich; one A.L., by General Bertrand, one page, folio, Paris, 16th May 1822, to Empress Marie Louise; one A.L., by General Bertrand, two pages, folio, Paris, 18th May 1822, to Empress Marie Louise; and one A.L., by General Bertrand, three pages, Paris 18th May 1822, to Prince Metternich, also adding at the base of the letter an eight lines autograph note, dated Paris, 24th May 1822, addressed to an Ambassador. Henri Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844) French General. Count Bertrand and Grand Marshal of the Palace. Bertrand was aide-de-camp to Napoleon I and the closest officer to the Emperor who had full confidence in him. He served during the expedition to Egypt and the Battles of Austerlitz, Wagram, Leipzig and Waterloo and accompanied Napoleon I to Elba in 1814 and to Saint Helena in 1815. Bertrand was condemned to death in 1816 but did not return to France until Napoleon´s death when King Louis XVIII granted his amnesty. In 1840 Bertrand went to Saint Helena to bring Napoleon´s remains to France; & Charles Tristan, Marquis de Montholon (1783-1853) French General during the Napoleonic Wars. He chose to go into exile on Saint Helena with Napoleon I after the Emperor´s second abdication. Napoleon dictated to Montholon the notes on his career, a trustworthy commentary on the events of the first part of his life. 1-To the first letter in the hand of Montholon, he states in part `Doctor Antommarchi qui aura l´honneur de remettre cette letter à V.M. a soigné l´Empereur V. auguste époux dans la maladie à laquelle il a succombé. Dans les derniers moments l´Empereur nous a chargé de faire connaitre a V.M. qu´il la priait de faire payer Mr. Antommarchi une pension de 6000 fr comme recompense de ses services a St. Hélene´ ("Doctor Antommarchi who will have the honour to deliver this letter to Y.M. has looked after the Emperor Y. August husband in the disease to which he succumbed. In his last moments the Emperor asked us to inform Y.M., asking you to make pay to Mr. Antommarchi a pension of 6000 fr as a reward for his services to St. Helene.") further referring to another pension in favour of Abbot Vignali. 2-To the autograph letter signed by Bertrand and also signed by Montholon, they state in part `Madame, Chargés par l´Empereur Napoleon de l´Execution de ses dernieres volontés. Nous avons l´honneur de vous transmettre un extrait de ses dernieres dispositions. Jusqu´à present nous n´avons pas pu en donner commission a Votre Majesté, parce que nous n´avions pas de moyen certain de lui faire parvenir une lettre. Nous sommes chargés de remettre au Prince votre fils à Sa majorité divers objets qui ont été à l´Empereur.´ ("Madam, Charged by the Emperor Napoleon with the task of Execution of his last will, we have the honour to send you an extract of his last provisions. So far we have not been able to give these letters to Your Majesty, because we did not have a secure way to do so. We are responsible for handing over to the Prince your son when he will become adult various objects of the Emperor.") 3-To the third letter, Bertrand explains few important matters to the Empress, stating in part `D´apres le Code Civil des Lois Françaises, un pere ne peut disposer que de la moitié de ses biens lorsqu´en mourant il laisse un fils; mais ces lois qui régissent les particuliers, ne furent point applicables au Souverain don't les domaines étaient gouvernés par des lois spéciales. Ce n´est pas a la Veuve et au fils de l´Empereur Napoleon qu´il est nécessaire de dire que pour avoir perdu son trone il n´était pas cependant devenu un simple particulier; il y a dans la pourpre et dans l´onction sainte et sacrée, des caractères qui ne s´éffacent jamais´ ("According to the Civil Code of French Laws, a father can only dispose of half of his property when he dies and leaves a son; but these laws which govern individuals, were not applicable to the Sovereign since the domains were governed by special laws. It is not to the Widow and to the son of the Emperor Napoleon that it is necessary to say that for having lost his throne he had not, however, become a private individual; there are in the purple and in the holy and sacred unction, characters that never fade") further pointing out the real situation and value of the legacy, stating in part `V.M. pensera sans doute comme feu l´Empereur son époux qu´après avoir commandé à l´univers et dispose de tant de trésors, ce n´était pas un heritage de quelques millions, qui fut bien précieux pour son fils… Supplier V.M. d´observer que la somme que feu l´Empereur a légué excedent beaucoup celles qui se trouvent disponibles..´ ("Y.M. will undoubtedly think like the late Emperor Your husband that after having commanded the universe and having obtained so many treasures, it was not an inheritance of a few million, which was very precious for his son… We beg you to observe that the sum that the late Emperor bequeathed greatly exceeds what is available…") 4-To the fourth letter, Bertrand kindly requests Prince Metternich´s help to deliver a letter to the Empress and expects his support to facilitate the execution of Napoleon´s will. The most illustrious of the captives that history can ever mention, the immortal genius who joined the glory of imposing silence on Europe for a quarter of a century… expressed in the last days of his life the desire that his remains were taken to France; His will executors before leaving London addressed to King George IV a request for the fulfilment of these wishes of the late Emperor Napoleon...") 6-To the sixth letter, Bertrand reminds and claims his family rights on a Duchy according to the Emperor´s decisions, referring to the Treaty of Fontainebleau and to Napoleon´s last will and codicil.OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THIS LOT CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED HERE. Please contact us directly for further information.

Churchill attempts the censorship of Sherwoodon matters ‘disparaging to me personally or to my son’ [CHURCHILL WINSTON S.]: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. SHERWOOD ROBERT (1896-1955) American playwright and screenwriter who served as a speechwriter for Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. Sherwood recounted the experience in his Pulitzer Prize winning book Roosevelt and Hopkins: An Intimate History (1948). A fascinating archive of telegrams and letters between Sherwood and Lord Beaverbrook, including (in chronological order) – (i) Original typed telegram (received copy) from Sherwood, one page, oblong 8vo, New York, 11th June 1948, to Lord Beaverbrook, on the printed stationery of Canadian Pacific Telegraphs, stating, in part, ‘Very anxious talk to you about urgent cable from eminent friend [Winston S. Churchill] in London raising furious questions about my book’, and asking if he can talk to Beaverbrook the following morning. (ii) Original typed telegram (received copy) from Sherwood, one page, 4to, New York, 12th June 1948, to Lord Beaverbrook, on the printed stationery of Canadian National Telegraphs, stating, in part, ‘Following is the text I referred to Quote It would not be right for you to publish a detailed account of my Conferences in Moscow of August 1942. Harry [Hopkins] was not present Your story is only based on the report of Averell [Harriman] a copy of which was found among Harrys confidential papers Stop This Government should certainly be consulted before any such disclosures were made Stop Pray let me know whether you have already obtained consent of the President and State Department as well as that of Everell (sic) to the publication of these secret discussions Unquote……Should greatly appreciate your views on the quoted portion of the message’. (iii) Original typed telegram (received copy) from Sherwood, two pages, 4to, New York, 16th June 1948, to Lord Beaverbrook, on the printed stationery of Canadian National Telegraphs, again relaying a message from Churchill, in part, ‘Last night I received a straight message cable….from Kent as follows Quote [I] have further considered your text and propose to submit it to H. M. Government Stop I do not think they will agree to the disclosures of the conference of August Nineteen Forty Two I also object to this Stop With regards to Hopkins diary concerning [Anthony] Eden conversations with him it would be improper to publish these without Eden’s consent Stop It does not rest with me to give you any permission to publish quotations from the various telegrams quoted from me to Roosevelt Hopkins and Stalin Stop These must belong to H. M. Government Stop Finally I append in my following cable notes on matters of secondary importance some of which are merely disparaging to me personally or to my son others which are prejudicial to Anglo American interests at the present time Stop Many of these are not founded on facts Stop I feel confident that for your own reputation you will delay publication till these issues have been satisfactorily dealt with Stop The present text would certainly lead to much painful controversy both official and personal…..’, Sherwood concluding by informing Beaverbrook that he is seeking legal advice before replying ‘to this amazing message’. (iv) T.L.S., Bob, two pages, 4to, Sutton Place (New York), 16th June 1948, to Lord Beaverbrook, marked Personal and Confidential. Sherwood refers to his telegram and Churchill’s message to him and adds that somebody had tried to telephone him at 1.00am British time (‘So perhaps there was an attempt made to telephone me from Chartwell before the cable was despatched’) and further remarking ‘I am completely at a loss to understand what is “disparaging” to WSC personally but the reference to “my son” refers undoubtedly to something written by Harry at Casablanca, - a reference to Randolph in a conversation with WSC….That is the kind of thing that I would have omitted had I been asked to do so in the usual, courteous manner’, also asking for Beaverbrook’s recollections of talks with Harry Hopkins in Washington in July 1944, relative to a lend lease to Great Britain following V-E Day, ‘Since Harry’s efforts as regards Phase Two were of tremendous importance in the light of events following Roosevelt’s death, I should certainly like to have more enlightenment on this subject’, and concluding by remarking that a first installment of the Hopkins material has appeared in The Sunday Express and that ‘It occurs to me as remotely possible that this…..may have had something to do with the amazingly intemperate and ill-mannered outburst from Chartwell’. (v) Original typed telegram (received copy) from Sherwood, one page, 4to, New York, 18th June 1948, to Lord Beaverbrook, on the printed stationery of Canadian National Telegraphs. Sherwood informs Beaverbrook that he has received two more communications from Churchill, which he proceeds to quote from, in part, ‘I have not yet received an answer from you to my latest cable which is of an urgent character. In the meantime quite apart from our personal correspondence His Majesty’s Government tells me that they have read the first installments of your work appearing in The Sunday Express and they note much confidential material is being used They are therefore making inquiries…..as to whether the United States government have been consulted and what the book contains’, and also adds that he would very much welcome a telephone conversation with Beaverbrook on the subject. (vi) Original contemporary typed copy of a telegram from Sherwood, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (New York), n.d. (21st June 1948), to Winston S. Churchill. Sherwood states that his ‘detailed comments on your specific points’ are being sent to Churchill via air mail, although in the meantime clarifies that he will omit the references to Randolph Churchill, as well as Churchill’s own attitude toward press conferences and also Eden’s comments on the reception of speeches, adding ‘As to Stalin statement quoted by Willkie I of course agree that the statement was a falsehood and this is exposed and refuted in my book……However I shall be careful to insure this is entirely clear’ and concluding by congratulating Churchill on the reviews of The Gathering Storm. (vii) T.L.S., Bob, one page, 4to, Sutton Place (New York), 23rd June 1948, to Lord Beaverbrook, sending the copy of the final cable to Churchill (‘I have had no reply to this to date’) and also referring to quotations he will be making from two letters written by Beaverbrook to Harry Hopkins in October and November 1944. (viii) Original typed telegram (received copy, on board R.M.S. Queen Mary) from Sherwood, one page, small 4to, New York, 25th June 1948, to Lord Beaverbrook, on the printed stationery of the Cunard White Star International Marine Radio Service Radiogram. Sherwood thanks Beaverbrook for their message and remarks ‘No further word from Kent so perhaps the incident is closed until the appearance of book’.  OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THIS LOT CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED HERE. Please contact us directly for further information.
