She attained a degree in Geography at Glasgow University and went on to train as a teacher. However, she had always painted and her talent was strongly encouraged by her uncle the distinguished Iain Macnab RE ROI (1890 - 1967) who persuaded Sheila to come to London and train under him. Iain Macnab had been Principal at Heatherley's Art School (1925 - 1940) and then went on to be founding Principal of the hugely influential Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Sheila's London influences and Glasgow School foundations evolved into a distinctive and individual style. She usually worked "en plein air" and her work is semi-abstract. She focused mainly on landscape where her training as a geographer, allowed her to use her understanding of land formation, the delicate balance of the seasons and the interaction between Man and the environment. Her uncle's concept of "rhythm" is evident in Sheila's work and remained a constant throughout her career. She painted in Scotland, Spain. France and Italy and exhibited widely, especially in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle. Her work appeared frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute annual exhibitions and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London). She won numerous awards and prizes over a long and distinguished career. In recent times we have offered a growing number of Sheila Macmillan's paintings with several achieving more than £1000. The current leading price is £1700 (hammer) for "Ronda, Spain", a 45 x 48cm oil on board (lot 510A, The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction 24th October 2021).

McTear's has established a succession of UK auction record prices for Alan King's work in recent years and the current record is £3600 for Weavers of Truth, lot 275 27th November 2016. Although Alan was a much respected and successful artist during his lifetime, auction prices since 2013 have continued to rise, even though very few collectors have so far opted to sell their examples of his work. The red hat and stripey trousers are Alan King "trade marks".

* JOHN BULLOCH SOUTER (SCOTTISH 1890 - 1972),GRAN VIAwatercolour on paperimage size 24cm x 33cm, overall size 40cm x 49cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Label verso: The Late John Bulloch Souter Archive, Rendezvous Gallery, Aberdeen.Note: John Bulloch Souter, was born in Aberdeen and studied at Gray`s School of Art. After serving in the Royal Medical Corps during World War I, JBS became a highly successful and celebrated portrait painter. Sitters included Gladys Cooper, Ivor Novello, Fay Compton, entertainers and celebrities of the era, academics, military officers and society figures. He exhibited at The Redfern Gallery, the Fine Art Society, Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. During World War II he worked in the Censorship Department as a translator. He also restored paintings from The Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. In 1926 his painting "The Breakdown" caused an international media storm and it was eventually withdrawn from the Royal Academy. The original painting was destroyed by Souter but he repainted a copy from the original sketches in 1962 which he amusingly dated 1926 - 62 and which was sold in Edinburgh in 2018 for £60.000. Souter married Christian Grace Reid in February 1926 at St Paul's Parish Church, Hammersmith. The couple were Jazz enthusiasts and were also regular visitors to the Opera. London was, and is, one of the most vibrant cities in the world and the diversity of entertainment appealed to the young Aberdonian and his beautiful wife. After 26 years of married life in London, Jack (as he was known to his friends and family) and Christian moved back to Aberdeen (1952) when JBS inherited "Kinnoull" 19, Anderson Drive in the city, from his sister Anne. Souter was a remarkably talented artist who painted an extraordinarily diverse range of subject matter in a variety of styles and mediums. He painted one of the most controversial British pictures of the 20th century and in so doing, possibly inadvertently, highlighted prejudices virulent in the 1920s and still resonant and acutely "current" almost a century later.

* FRANCIS BOAG (SCOTTISH b. 1948), UNTITLED mixed media on board, signedimage size 19cm x 54cm, overall size 55cm x 90cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Note: Born in Dundee in 1948, Francis Boag is a leading figure amongst a group of painters often labelled the ‘New Scottish Colourists’. In a career spanning more than 50 years, he has taught in schools in Dundee, Perth and Aberdeen. His vivid, and instantly recognizable, paintings have found their way into a host of public buildings such as airports and hospitals and are sought after by large corporate collectors including John Lewis plc, Baxters Food Group and the Royal Bank of Scotland. In 1964, at barely 17 years of age, he won a place at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee and studied under the then Head of Painting, the larger than life, Scottish-Italian painter Alberto Morrocco and his Deputy David McClure. Upon graduation, Francis’ professional career was dictated by the rhythm of school life. After completing an MA at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and nearly 30 years teaching, Francis decided to challenge the maxim, ‘those who can, do and those who can’t, teach’ and in 2001 went on to achieve a life-long ambition of making a career as an artist. His paintings are less about copying a scene, than creating a representation of it, a representation which has to be on the one hand a recognisable place or space but also a world where the imagination is unleashed. Polls published in the press in Scotland and Ireland have both placed him in their lists of top 50 best-selling artists, and he is one of only a few artists who has work in the National Collections of both countries. For many years he has donated images of his work to the children’s charity, UNICEF who have recently published a Box set of his Scottish landscapes and in 2015 his Christmas card design was UNICEF’s top seller, raising more than £35,000 for the Charity.

The River - Is the River Dee from the South Deeside Road between Aboyne and Dinnet, just before the sawmill with Morven and has a wee cottage and views of the gliding strip fields". The typical gallery price for a Howard Butterworth of these dimensions is in excess of £9000. Note: Born in Rochdale in 1945, Howard Butterworth is a renowned Scottish artist who has lived and painted professionally in Northern Scotland since 1968. Howard captures the atmospheric light and colours of Scotland especially around Balmoral, Royal Deeside, Cairngorms National Park and the Scottish Highlands. Capturing the moods and seasons as only an Aberdeenshire based artist painting outdoors can, Butterworth paints 'en plein air' and he describes his style of painting as "emotional realism". He conveys the sense of being in a particular place at a particular moment in time and the experience and feeling of Nature's constantly changing colours and light. Howard Butterworth paintings are held in private and corporate collections worldwide, particularly his paintings of Scotland including those of native birchwoods, Caledonian pine forests, heather covered moorland, snow-capped mountains and the lively waters and bridges of Royal Deeside. Howard Butterworth's patrons include private and corporate buyers with several paintings featuring in the Royal Collections of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who closely supported him over the years.

* PAT DOUTHWAITE (SCOTTISH 1939 - 2002),UNTITLED pastel on paper, signed and dated '87image size 84cm x 60cm, overall size 106cm x 82cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Provenance: The Corrymella Scott Gallery.Note: "She should no longer be seen as an exotic maverick but acknowledged as one of the true originals of Scottish art." A concluding comment on Pat Douthwaite’s 1993 solo exhibition, made by The Scotsman’s art critic Edward Gage. The ‘maverick’ label is often attached to Douthwaite to encompass a variety of the artist’s more striking traits: her troubled personality, the restless, nomadic lifestyle that took her across the world in search of subjects and meaning and her complete disregard for anything that did not further the development of her artwork, despite it making her a difficult figure to manage and work with. A good example is an incident in which she broke into a house and stole back one of her paintings from a buyer whom she did not consider worthy of owning her work. This demanding, uncompromising commitment and all-encompassing focus on her work paid off. She developed and sustained a distinctive, signature style characterised by raw feeling and idiosyncratic lines. Douthwaite was fascinated by historical heroines including Greek deities, Mary Queen of Scots and the aviator Amy Johnson and often depicted them as well as herself. Her images of women remain the most powerful and popular of her works, truly encapsulating the pain and suffering women can experience and endure. This exploration of suffering means there is a violence in the work, yet Douthwaite often manages to retain fun, playful touches in their execution. Born in Glasgow in 1934, Douthwaite’s first exposure to creative expression was in the form of dance classes at the dancing school run by Margaret Morris, the bohemian partner of the Scottish Colourist John Duncan Fergusson. She eventually discontinued dancing and decided, aged twenty-four and with no artistic training, to become a painter. Douthwaite showed her work to Fergusson, who recognised her talent and encouraged her endeavours, though he suggested she avoid art school, as he had done. Thus, both Morris and Fergusson had a major impact on Douthwaite’s creative endeavours. Douthwaite’s ever-present wanderlust quickly took over and she left Glasgow to join an artistic community within William Crozier’s house in East Anglia. An informal artistic training in itself, she was surrounded by fellow artists including Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Crozier himself. In her lifetime, her work was recognised and championed by key figures in the Scottish art world; including Richard Demarco, who mounted her first major exhibition in Scotland in 1967; Douglas Hall, the former Director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the artist and critic Edward Gage. Following her death, her popularity continues to increase as ever more collectors are drawn to her distinctive, expressive style and tales of her mysterious, maverick personality. The prestigious Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) have long promoted Pat Douthwaite's work and her most recent solo show "Pat Douthwaite, On The Edge" was staged by the gallery between 4th and 27th February 2021.

It was while serving with HMS Devonshire that he was present on the bridge during the Bismarck action and in his first letter home to his mother, only 4 days after Bismarck's sinking he includes a sketch of "Bismarck on fire, before we topedoed her". He also reports "I've got one of the German survivors lifebelts!" A post war file contains much correspondence with the German Embassy and a surviving German Officer Herr v.Mullenheim-Rechburg. Hollick being gracious enough to return the much travelled Bismarck life belt to its former owners. With this file there is also correspondence with Captain A.W.S Agar VC, DSO RN,who has signed a very long handwritten letter to Hollick. To complete the Archive are service documents, cap tallies ( Mauritious and Pemboke) some unusual and very clear wartime photographs of convoys, etc., and a number of scenes on board ship, MTB's at their base in Leghorn,(Livorno, Italy), also some very unusual images of landings against the Japanese some involving MTB's and report of Japanese suicide boats. Hollick had considerable skill in his use of watercolours and a number of his painting are included, some during World War Two at sea. Overall a very complete naval record with some first hand Bismarck content. (In summary a modern file with documents, tallies stamps, watercolours, maps, a large photograph Album, loose photographs, two folders of watercolours/drawings, file of letters and documents and contemporary newspapers Bismarck related)

"Passage de la Berisina 26,27,28 et 29 Novembre 1812" Original account of the crossing of the Beresina in November 1812 handwritten in ink in French. Almost certainly by an observer of the buiding of the bridges over the river and the subsequent crossing and the unfolding tragedy as movement across the bridge became impossible. The skill and bravery of the Pontooners who built and repaired the bridges, often up to their waists in freezing water, remains a unique feat. 22 pages on contemporary parchment bound in red half leather with titling to the spine, together with full typed translation into English, itself with some age. Very unusual first hand account of one of the most epic and tragic military events of the Napoleonic period.

ADAM AND THE ANTS (ADAM ANT Interest) - Personally owned and worn T-Shirt “Plastic Surgery” 1977. From the Alleyne collection.Black print on white shirt. Designed by Adam (Stuart Goddard), it features two stills shot from screen from a TV documentary on 'The Guinea Pig Club' (Archibald McIndoe's pioneering WW2 reconstructive surgery unit for RAF crews, based in East Grinstead, Sussex) broadcast in 1977, with lyric verses and refrains from the Ants' song "Plastic Surgery". Originally this t-shirt was printed as a run of 12 shirts - for the band and close friends (this is from that initial run) - and later made available from the "Smutz” shop in the Kings Road, Chelsea's Beaufort Market. This particular t-shirt was given to the vendor by the Ants' guitarist Mark 'The Kid' Ryan who was a member of the group from May to October 1977. He told Alleyne it was Adam’s shirt. At this time the rest of the band typically cut the sleeves off of their shirts - the style championed by Westwood and McLaren's "SEX" shop - and as worn in their performance of this song in Derek Jarman's film "Jubilee". This item has the sleeves intact, as worn by Adam at the time, which gives credence to Ryan's assertion that this was Adam's personal garment. The condition is well used and has discoloured over time and has some holes, as can be expected with a piece from this date.

ADAM AND THE ANTS (ADAM ANT Interest) - Personally owned and worn T-Shirt “Dirk Wears White Socks” 1978. Black print on white shirt. Designed by Adam (Stuart Goddard). Original Goddard illustration with the (male) group members' heads (Andy Warren, Matthew Ashman, Dave Barbe, Adam Ant) composited onto female fetish characters' bodies with lyric verses and refrains from the Ants' 1977 song “Dirk Wears White Socks” (not to be confused with the album of a similar name released in November 1979) along with various other quotes. This design was initially produced in a very limited run for the band and friends to wear and was later produced and sold by notorious punk shop "BOY" in the Kings Road, who opened to compete with Westwood`s renamed "Seditionaries" boutique. This T-shirt was given to the vendor by Ants' bass player Andy Warren, and was from the initial run - hence no branding label. See photos of Ants Drummer Dave Barbe (later of chart toppers Bow Wow Wow) on stage in 1978 in the typically sleeveless configuration of the t-shirt.From the Alleyne collection.
