Architectural: A rare carved limestone armorial from La Suvera, Siena, country villa of Pope Julius II and the Ricci family carved in high relief with a hedgehog gazing at the sun, Italian, mid 18th century, 68cm high by 44cm wideProvenance: The Ricci family were established in Montepulciano, Southern Tuscany in the 12th century and owned La Suvera in 1123. Riccio de Ricci was an amateur weather forecaster, whose predictions were so accurate, he was believed to be a warlock engaged in the Dark Arts. To deflect the accusations, he claimed to make his predictions by observing the way hedgehogs scanned the sun. Since that time, the Ricci coat of Arms has incorporated a hedgehog gazing at the sun as in this rare Italian 18th century carved stone example. To this day the Italian for hedgehog is Riccio. This armorial which would have adorned another Ricci property was relocated to La Suvera following the repurchase of the villa by the Marquises Ricci who converted La Suvera to a Relais Hotel. Following its recent closure this and the marble baths were removed.See also footnote to lot 5.

Garden statues: A rare lead figure of Leda and the swan possibly by John Van Nost, mid 18th century, on stone base and later plinth, the figure 110cm high, overall height 140cmAlthough it isn’t possible to make a positive attribution, this rare lead figure of Leda and the swan was produced by one of the leading producers of lead in the late 17th/early 18th century. Much of the lead sculpture of the time drew on the classics and this depicts Leda who was the daughter of the Aetolian King Thestius and was seduced by Zeus when the king of the Olympian gods took the form of a swan. The result of this union, which occurred on the banks of the River Eurotas, was an egg from which the beautiful Helen and Polydeuces were born. Leda is depicted wearing a crown as befitting her status as a princess, whilst the partial figure of the swan can be seen at the back of the piece. Stylistically it is reminiscent of the van Nost family who were of Flemish descent. The eldest, John van Nost, is first recorded working at Windsor Castle circa 1678. He had his own yard by about 1687 and there manufactured ‘Marble and Leaden figures, Busto’s and noble Vases, Marble chimney pieces and curious Marble tables’. He is best remembered as a supplier of lead garden statues. Records from Melbourne Hall, Derbyshire show that each of the supplied statues cost between £20-30. After his death (circa 1712) his yard at Hyde Park Corner was taken over by his nephew Gerard and then by John van Nost the younger in 1729 who continued until the mid 18th century.
Garden statues: A Coade stone boundary marker plaque depicting the seal of St Olave’s school and its foundation date 1571, circa 1780/90, the underside stamped COADE’S Lithodipyra LONDON, 30cm high by 25cm wideProvenance: St Olave’s School, Tooley Street, LondonEleanor Coade (d.1821) opened her Lambeth Manufactory for ceramic artificial stone in 1769, and appointed the sculptor John Bacon as its manager two years later. It was highly unusual in the Georgian era and earlier for a business to be set up and run by a woman. She was employed by all the leading late 18th century architects. From about 1777 she began her engraved designs, which were published in 1784 in a catalogue of over 700 items entitled A Descriptive Catalogue of Coade’s Artificial Stone Manufactory. Then in 1799, the year she entered into partnership with her cousin John Sealy, she issued a handbook of her Pedlar’s Lane exhibition Gallery. The firm became Coade and Sealy from this date and following Sealy’s death in 1813, it reverted to Coade and in 1821 with the death of the younger Eleanor Coade, control of the firm passed to William Croggan, who died in 1835, following bankruptcy. Coade’s manufactures resembling a fine-grained natural stone, have always been famed for their durability. These plaques are stamped Lithodipyra which is a word put together by Mrs Coade from three Greek words meaning stone, twice and fire. The di (twice) element in the word refers to the grog part of the formula and also to the crushed glass which was included, both of which were fired twice, once to produce them and a second time when kneaded into fresh clay to form the Coade body. This clever marketing ploy reinforced a major element of Coade stone’s desirability, namely its durability. Interestingly pieces stamped Lithodipyra were only manufactured in the 1780’s and 1790’s which gives us a pretty accurate timeframe in which they were made and since they are obviously very site specific, they would have been a one off commission.Henry Leeke, a Southwark brewer, left a will on 13 April 1560 which gave £8 a year towards the founding and maintenance of a new free school. On 25 July 1571 letters patent were obtained which established the school as a grammar school. The charter stipulated that the school be called: The Free Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth of the Parishioners of the Parish of Saint Olave in the County of Surrey., Initially the school was housed in the old Vestry Hall of the church and its adjoining premises (on the west side of Churchyard Alley, a narrow lane off the south side of Tooley Street, running parallel with Borough High Street). Although the school was untouched by the Great Fire of Southwark, major renovation and extension was undertaken in 1676 after the fire. These unusual plaques bearing the date of the school’s founding in 1571, date to around 1780-1790, prior to the school’s relocation to Bermondsey in 1829. The school has subsequently moved a number of times and is now located in Orpington, Kent., Alison Kelly, the renowned doyenne of Coade stone charmingly remarks in her book, Mrs Coade’s Stone records under St Olave’s Tooley St School; ”Oblong plaque found at New Malden and believed to be a boundary marker. Marked COADE’S LITHODIPYR, St OL, therefore probably 1780s-1790’s. Shows schoolmaster and boys in attempted Elizabethan scene representing school’s date. Present whereabouts unknown”, She further records the Architect of the school as Samuel Robinson 1752-1833. Mrs Coade appears to have taken as her inspiration an already existing circular engraved woodcut of the school, probably contemporary with its foundation which is still in use as the school seal today. James Dixon, Irish (1887 - 1970) " The HMS Wasp perched back of the Lighthouse, Tory Island, where 82 Noble Men had sunk in the raging Seas," Signed James Dixon and inscribed lower right, O.O.B, approx. 57cms x 76cms (22 1/2" x 30"), mounted on sack cloth, gilt frame. (1)Provenance: A gift from the Artist to Professor Robert F.V. Heuston, Trinity College, Dublin, and subsequently gifted to Professor W.N. Osborough, Professor of Law at UCD and Trinity, and by direct family descent.* HMS Wasp was a composite screw gunboat of the Royal Navy built in 1880 and used to transport officials to and from the Islands off the north-west coast of Ireland. In 1883 she brought badly needed supplies of seed potatoes to the starving islanders of Inishtrahull, off Malin Head. However, life on the islands was always harsh: in the following year the landlord ordered the eviction of three tenant farmers who could no longer pay their rent, and the Wasp was dispatched to the island with police, bailiffs and court officials to enforce the evictions.Inexplicably, instead of heading directly to Inishtrahull, the lieutenant navigating the ship took her close to Tory Island. At 3.55 on the morning of 22 September, Wasp ran aground on a reef near the island?s lighthouse, filled with water, hit the reef a second time, and sank within fifteen minutes. Six crewmen survived by clinging to one of the masts and were later brought ashore; the remaining 52 people on board drowned.The cause of the shipwreck has remained a mystery to this day. Was it the result of negligence on the part of the commander and/or navigating officer (as was found by the subsequent court of enquiry)? Did the Tory islanders persuade the lighthouse keeper to turn off his light at the precise moment when the ship was passing? Or ? was it caused by the islanders letting loose a curse on the ship by revolving their ancient cursing stones?The artist, James Dixon, was born on Tory Island in 1887 and lived there all his life as a fisherman and small farmer. At the age of 72 he was inspired to take up painting by the artist Derek Hill, who had set up a painting hut on the island. Hill founded and ran the ?Tory School? of local artists, supplying them with oils and other materials and encouraging them to use their wild surroundings as subject matter. Through Hill, Dixon became known to the art world and became an important figure in contemporary Irish Art. He died in 1970.

A very important gilt Side Chair, by John Trotter, with cartouche shaped back around a padded panel with brass studs above a serpentine padded seat on four cabriole scroll legs. (1)Provenance: From Carton House, by John Trotter, cabinetmaker to George II. Originally from Berwickshire, he ran a flourishing cabinetmaking firm in Frith St., Soho, London, and is recorded in directories and the Royal accounts at No. 43, 1755 - 92. In 1754, Trotter subscribed to Chippendale's Director and in the same year was appointed the Royal Upholsterer.This chair was part of a set supplied to Leinster House in 1759.The chairs are identified in a letter from Lady Caroline Fox to her sister Lady Emily, Countess of Kildare, 21 February 1759 which states: "I saw Mr. Trotter to-day who says the chairs will be ready immediately but begs to know if you will have them gilt now..?" The letter is accompanied by a sketch with measurements (which correspond to the current lot) and is titled 'Mr. Trotter's Chair' (see illustration).The chair was moved to Carton House in 1815 on the sale of Leinster House (by the 3rd Duke of Leinster) to the Dublin Society.

A fine George III longcase 8 day movement with anchor escapement and brass arched dial by John Baddely / Baddeley of Albrighton, who built the clock for the church in Tong, Shropshire. Face with silvered chapter ring, date wheel and separate seconds dial and striking on a bell. Movement screwed to possibly original saddle board. Dimensions of face approx 308mm wide, 440mm to top of arch. Baddely also specialised in making barometers and optics, and was noted for inventing a new type of refraction telescope. He died in 1804. £100-150

1970 Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce Transmission: manual Mileage: 30601The first of Alfa Romeo’s Bertone styled coupés, the 1.6 litre Giulia Sprint GT, was launched in 1963. Mechanically the stylish new 2+2 was much the same as the Giulia TI sports saloon, featuring a five-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension, coil-spring live rear axle and disc brakes all round. A 1300 model, the GT Junior, arrived in 1966 and the range was further extended the following year by the launch of the 1750 GTV, the latter powered by a 1,799cc, 118bhp version of Alfa’s classic twin-cam, four-cylinder engine, in a four-headlight version of the existing bodyshell running on 14-inch wheels. A short lived but nevertheless popular model, the 1750 GTV underwent a minor mechanical and styling revision part way through production before being replaced by the 2000 version in 1972. More powerful than the 1600 but sweeter running than the 2000, the 1750 is the choice of the Alfa Romeo enthusiast who knows their GTVs. Driver’s cars par excellence in the Alfa tradition, Bertone’s timelessly elegant Giulia coupés are among the most exciting sports saloons of the 1960s and today all versions are highly sought after.This lovely, rare, right hand drive Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce is in very good condition throughout. A condition report written for a previous owner in 1998 tells of the body being restored and new wings fitted. Supplied new with Webasto sunroof with a very rare deflector, a clock and outside temperature gauge. This 1750 GTV has been very well maintained, and no expense spared by the two previous owners over the last 24 years. The car is finished in Biancospino with black interior and comes supplied with a UK V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in December 2021, a large history file containing invoices from Alfa specialist Gran Turismo, Andrew Thorogood and Titus Rowlandson of Victory Garage showing all the work carried out since 1998, old MoT’s dating back to 1996, the early condition report and an article relating to the Alfa GTV. 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250 S Transmission: automatic Mileage: 23622Premiered at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1965, the initial model lineup of the W108 consisted of the 250 S, 250 SE and 300 SE, as well as a sole W109, the 300 SEL. Engines for the new car were carried over from the previous generation, but enlarged and refined. The 250 S was the entry-level vehicle fitted with a 2496cc straight-six M108 engine, with two dual downdraft carburettors, delivering 130 bhp at 5400 rpm which accelerated the car from standstill to 62 mph in 13 seconds and gave a top speed of 113 mph. Approximately 130,000 of the 250 S/SE models were built during the first two years of the W108/109's existence.Bill Wyman, founder member of The Rolling Stones, purchased this classic 'stacked headlamp' Mercedes-Benz 250 S Saloon and it was delivered to him on Monday 22nd August 1966. This was the first Mercedes with curved black windows. Although Mercedes-Benz had rejected Bill's order for black windows, a company in West London removed the 250's windows, they were curved not flat, took a mould and commissioned Pilkington to make special glass to fit. Then of course I got stopped all the time, Bill recalls. Though the police usually just wanted to see who was in it. Bill used the car frequently until 1969, when The Rolling Stones were not in the studio or touring, to help relax; being a keen photographer he would drive around the country taking photographs. After selling her in 1969 and purchasing a number of other Mercedes-Benz along the way, he purchased the car back in 1991 from a lady in Bury St. Edmunds, sadly the car was in poor condition. 1967 Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 Duetto Transmission: manual Mileage: 52747The Alfa Romeo Spider 1600, to give it its official factory name, was manufactured during 1966 and 1967. The name 'Duetto' came about from a competition held by Alfa Romeo to distinguish the car from its Giulia 105 series stable mates, the Coupé and Berlina, and was accepted for its reference to the two-seat layout. The Duetto name only applied to the 1600 model; two later variants, with different engine sizes, were the 1750 Velocé and 1300 Junior. All of the models are commonly known today as roundtail spiders. These advanced motor cars were fitted, as standard, with twin cam engines, five-speed gearboxes and disc brakes on all four wheels.Offered here is a unique opportunity to bring back to its former glory a rare and beautiful genuine 1967 Duetto Spider. First registered on 25th May 1967, the car was fully restored in the mid 70’s by the previous owner Mr. Frank Pollock who, after enjoying the car extensively, sold it on to the vendor in 1988. The car was a concours winner no less than six times between 1981 and 1992 and amazingly, much of its concours documentation remains within the car’s history file including scoring sheets, entries and pictures. 1934 Rolls-Royce 20/25 by Atcherley Transmission: manual Mileage: 26176By the late 1920s the trend for ever-heavier coachwork on the Rolls-Royce 20hp had inevitably had a detrimental effect on performance. Rolls-Royce’s solution was to increase the comparatively small six-cylinder engine’s capacity from just over three litres to 3699cc which, together with a stronger crankshaft allowing increased rpm, raised its output to 25hp. Over the past eight decades the 20/25hp Rolls-Royce has earned an enviable reputation of being among the most dependable, satisfying and highest quality pre-war models of all. Produced from 1929 to 1935, it represented the marque’s determined effort to move away from massive formal cars, routinely chauffeur-driven, to the newly fashionable owner-driver market for the wealthy private owner-driver. Various detail improvements were made to the 20/25 during its seven year production life including rises in compression ratio in 1930 and 1932; the latter year also saw the introduction of synchromesh for the third and fourth gear ratios, thermostatically controlled radiator grille shutters, a one-shot centralised lubrication system and an electric fuel gauge.W.C. Atcherley were a little known, Birmingham based coachbuilders whose speciality was exceptional quality and innovation. They were very selective in the cars they worked on and provided bodies for only 10 Rolls-Royces with only one of these being a 20/25; this very car. The car was ordered by Ada Scribbans who specified this very pleasing and unusual two door design. Ada was the wife of Harry, the owner of the largest bakery in the Midlands, who made his fortune during the First World War supplying the armed forces with their daily biscuit ration. The family were great friends of Brough, of Brough Superior fame, who in turn was a friend of William Clive Atcherley; hence her choice of coachbuilder.‘Ada’, as this example is affectionately known, has been used extensively, competing in numerous club tours and rallies including, as the photographs in the file show, a 4,000 mile jaunt in New Zealand. This was made possible by correct and regular maintenance and service work with no expense spared. She benefits from overdrive, an oil filter system, a radiator recore, a stainless steel exhaust, a DWS jacking system, all undertrays and has been correctly rewired. The car also benefits from a large metal sunroof and the ultimate luxury in 1934 …. a heater!This stunning looking Rolls-Royce presents well in green, trimmed in magnolia. The superb interior boasts art deco features, beautiful woodwork, pull out picnic tables, pull out storage spaces and even pull out drinks holders on the dashboard. The rear opening windows have blinds and the car feels spacious. The comfortable driving position is made possible by the rare addition of lateral adjustment to the seats. The car was taken for a test drive and is possibly the best driving example of a 20/25 that we have seen, pulling strongly with a smooth gearbox. 1988 Jaguar XJS Convertible Transmission: automatic Mileage: 16404In 1975, the Jaguar E-Type finally gave way to an all new and more efficient Jaguar, the Jaguar XJS. This new luxury grand tourer, although never quite having the same sporting image as the E-Type, was actually more aerodynamic with the final example leaving the production line on 4th April 1996. At that stage, 115,413 units had been manufactured during a 21 year production life. Power came from the Jaguar V12 engine with a choice of a manual or automatic transmission although the manual gearbox was soon dropped. V12 engine cars were unusual at the time with notable exceptions coming from Italian luxury sports car makers Lamborghini and Ferrari. The specifications of the XJS compared well with both Italian cars; it was able to accelerate to 60mph in 7.6 seconds and had a top speed of 143mph.This XJS V12 Convertible is presented in Satin Beige metallic with Barley hide and has incredibly low mileage from new. Also boasting low ownership, the first custodian kept the car until he sadly passed in 1998 when title was transferred to his widow who kept the car in long term storage for sentimental reasons. Old MoT certificates show that in 1996 the car had covered just 11,958 miles and by the time it went into storage a year or so later, the mileage had only increased to 14,214 miles. In June 2007 the car was then sold and recommissioned by the third owner, and an MoT in that year confirms the mileage at 14,813 and by 2008, the odometer reading was still only 15,036. The car was then once again put in long term storage where it remained until it was sold in 2014 and, again, recommissioned and fully serviced with an expenditure of over £7000. The MoT test from March 2015 states the mileage as 15,163. Later that year, the owner decided to offer the car at an auction at the Car Fest show where our vendor, an avid car collector, purchased the XJS and has since used it sparingly, on high days and holidays, increasing the mileage to just 16,404. 1973 Lancia Fulvia HF (1.6 litre) Transmission: manual Mileage: 62251Vincenzo Lancia was born in a little Italian village near Turin in 1881. He was the youngest of four children.He showed an aptitude for engineering first with bicycles then cars. He founded Lancia & C.Fabbrica Automobili with friend Claudio Fogolin in 1906 and focused on vehicle manufacture and motor racing. Lancia enjoyed a reputation for technical firsts in production innovation – first monocoque chassis,five speed gearbox and the first V6 and V4 engines.His son Gianni took over the company in 1937 and was heavily committed to racing and continuing innovation.His racing obsession was costly and in the 1960’s the company was sold to a private investor before sale to the Agnelli family in 1969.This impressive Lancia was purchased by Mr. Henry Morton of Fowey, Cornwall on 1st February 1973 and uses a shallow V4 engine configuration. At that time these were expensive vehicles, highly engineered and competitive, winning the Italian Rally Championship seven times in eight years. The car was originally presented in Verde, often referred to as Ascot dark green. After three years of ownership the car was transferred to his son John, who owned the car for the next 42 years. During his tenure the colour was changed Rosso Red, a glass sunroof was fitted as were a smart set of Cromodora alloys. The Lancia was purchased by our vendor in 2018, as a non-runner, after a two-year search. It has been the subject of a major and detailed ground up restoration to bring the car to the exceptional standard it is today. Original parts were sourced from across Europe to ensure authenticity throughout the restoration the seats and carburettors being rebuilt in Italy by specialists and original specification period correct new Michelin tyres were fitted. The bodywork, as shown in the photographic history, was undertaken by Cotswold Classic Cars at a cost in excess of £20,000. The fully documented engine and mechanical rebuild was entrusted to marque specialists, Richard Thorne Classic Lancia. The preparation for a European trip and subsequent rallies included a half roll cage, rally harnesses and electric fuelling with a pressure control filter. The fastidious vendor with an eye for detail tells us that he oversaw all works and that the total cost of the restoration was in excess of £60,000. 1967 Austin Healey 3000 Mk. III Transmission: manual Mileage: 91373The Austin Healey was one the foundation blocks for one of the 1960s' most charismatic rally cars with the 3000 Mk. I introduced in March 1959. Powered by an enlarged 2,912cc straight-six engine that developed some 124bhp and offered in two-seater (BN7) or 2+2 seater (BT7) configurations, the progressively improved 3000 metamorphosed through Mk. II and Mk. IIa guises before the arrival of the ultimate Mk. III BJ8 in October 1963. After the stratospheric rise in Aston Martin and E-Type prices, the next British Sports car currently seeing early signs of investor interest is the Austin Healey 3000 Mk. III (Phase II). Like its competitors, the 2+2 seater BJ8 proved a comfortable and fast grand tourer but has the benefit of multiple upgrades and the ability to win silverware whenever driven in anger, has elevated it above its rivals. Previously owned for 16 years by an Austin Healey collector who transformed the car into something very special having only travelled 4,000 miles (confirmed by documented MoT test certificates) whilst in his collection. The current owner continued to upgrade and improve with the addition of remotely adjustable 123 ignition system, uprated roll bars, a high efficiency radiator, cast aluminium sump, chrome wire wheels and new tyres. In addition, a new mohair soft top and tonneau were recently fitted by OTC together with a refurbished interior. The chassis has been thoroughly Waxoyled by Rawles Classic Cars who, incidentally, also completed all the mechanical upgrades. The car is stored in an air-conditioned cocoon and the bodywork and interior, like the mechanics, are in excellent condition. The engine has done 4,500 miles since being completely refurbished when a fast road cam and triple Weber carburettors on Denis Welch inlet manifolds were also fitted. An Aluminium ‘Stage 2’ lead-free head was fitted by Bill Rawles just 1,800 miles ago; together with Denis Welch exhaust manifold and system, new clutch, oil cooler and high torque starter motor. Not to be left out, the brakes have been improved with the fitting of vented rear drums. The engine specification, as you may have some inkling, is based on the Healey works cars that Rauno Aaltonen and Timo Makinen had prodigious rally success in driving for the Healey works team in 1964. All bills and MoT test certificates are contained in two comprehensive history files together with a spreadsheet summary (backed up by USB memory stick) of all work, costs and mileage. The quality and integrity of workmanship is impeccable with this superb example presenting in stunning condition. The thought gone into the upgrades are well-considered with no expense spared to workmanship. 1966 Ford Cortina Mk. I Crayford Convertible (1500cc) Transmission: manual Mileage: 81760In response to the huge success of the Mini, Ford responded not with a small car but with a larger family offering which they could sell in large numbers. The result was the Cortina; a distinctively styled, mass-market compact car aimed at buyers of the Morris Oxford and Vauxhall Victor. It launched on 20th September 1962 and sold extremely well. It was produced in five generations (Mk. I through to Mk. V) although officially the last one was called the Cortina 80. With variants of the Cortina reaching sales of over one million and each successive model proving more popular than its predecessor, such was its fame in the UK that the BBC Two documentary series Arena once devoted an entire programme to the car and its enthusiasts. With eye-catching modern styling, it was originally branded as the Consul Cortina until a modest facelift in 1964, after which it was sold simply as the Cortina but with four trim levels; Standard, Deluxe, Super and GT.Originally registered on 10th May 1966, this stylish Ford is one of approximately 50 Cortinas converted by Crayford into a convertible. The lines of the Mk. I lends itself to being a convertible and this example, with its blue coachwork and hood together with the contrasting red interior, is certainly aesthetically pleasing. The car fell into disrepair in the late 80’s and was sold in 1988 for £1,000 as a restoration project to Mr Paul Brench from Wiltshire who set about restoring the car.
