§ JOHN BYRNE (SCOTTISH B.1940) CECI N’EST PAS UN AUTO-PORTRAIT, 2003 Signed lower right and inscribed with title, oil and mixed media(78cm x 72cm (30.75in x 28.25in))Footnote: Literature: This work was featured on the front cover of 'John Byrne: Art and Life', by Robert Hewison, published by Lund Humphries, 2011. Note: 'Ceci n'est pas un auto-portrait' is a significant work in Byrne's career, as reflected by its inclusion in the artist's retrospective at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the decision to feature it on the cover of the artist's monograph. The title makes a clear allusion to the famous work 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe' by the Belgian Surrealist master René Magritte, to whom this work is an homage. Byrne was an avid admirer of Magritte which often tells in the whimsical qualities and the quietly uncanny nature of his work. As well as resonating with the older artist's painting in a visual and ideological sense, Byrne also found comfort in the tales of Magritte's early difficulties finding his foothold in the art world. In 1967 when Byrne was in his late twenties, a struggling artist working as a carpet designer in a factory, he penned a letter of admiration to his hero, addressing it simply 'Margritte, Brussels' and dispatching it, probably with little hope, in the post. Extraordinarily, the letter found its way to Magritte, who touchingly took the time to write a supportive response which must have buoyed the young Byrne immensely. “Like you, I have known what it is like to work as a draughtsman in a factory, and I had to paint in the evenings and on Sunday. “ I think each of us has to get through these years of trial, without hope, and without despair. Life for me – now – is ‘easier’, but I know that there is nothing that can necessarily be learned.” Though there were no keys for the "secret of success" to be handed over, there was empathy and solidarity, and encouragement to keep forging on. In the portrait offered here, Byrne depicts himself with an intriguing look in his eyes. There is something at once wild and wise - a knowing nod to Magritte perhaps - that his words had been true and that the artist's road is a long, hard and strange one.
§ SIR TERRY FROST R.A. (BRITISH 1915-2003) UNTITLED - 1969 Signed and dated 'March '69' verso, oil on canvas(51cm x 61cm (20in x 24in))Footnote: Note: Sir Terry Frost was a key figure in twentieth century British abstract art. Lyon & Turnbull are delighted to offer this fantastic mid-career example of his output, dating to 1969. Though the 1950s perhaps represent the peak of the St Ives School’s influence, the 1960s were in fact arguably the strongest period of Frost’s artistic career. His work from this decade demonstrates an assured confidence and ease; tangible in his freer handling of the brush and an exploration of colour which was both subtler in terms of palette and bolder in his use of stark monochromatics. These extremely pared back but robustly solid forms are very much redolent of the work of Barbara Hepworth, for whom he had worked for an a studio assistant in the 1950s. However, the greatest influence detectable here is perhaps that of American Expressionists like Elsworth Kelly, who Frost was likely exposed to in America when he held an exhibition of his work at the Barbara Schaeffer Society in New York in 1960. Though works such as this embrace the purity of a minimalistic aesthetic, Frost’s work never strayed far from the inspiration of his natural surroundings, and many works from this period relate to objects such as Cornish fishing boats or the curves of a woman’s body.
‘Gangsta Rat’ (Seel St / Liverpool Bienniale 2004)Stencil and Spray paint on PlywoodSize: 49.8 x 49.8 cm Framed in a bespoke box and behind glass (19.6 x 19.6 inches) Framed 60cm x 60cm(Unique)PROVENANCEExecuted on an abandoned building on Seel St and timed to coincide with the 2004 Liverpool Biennale, this piece was produced at the same time as a number of other public works, all of which were located within a short walk of each other, on the border of Chinatown, and in between the neighbourhoods of Knowledge Quarter and Baltic Triangle. It has been in the same private ownership since it was salvaged in 2004.NOTERats are iconic in Banksy street art prints, because they are emblematic of street art itself. Banksy rats reference the so-called father of stencil graffiti,” Blek Le Rat. This French stencil artist, who made his name in the 1980s, was similarly fond of rats as subjects because of their massive, if negatively perceived, impact on populations.Banksy’s Gangsta Rat is shown sitting down next to a large, portable “boom-box” stereo. He is wearing a working-class New York City uniform of a heavy chain medallion necklace and a NY Mets baseball cap. His expression is one of surprise — as if he is equally as startled by the viewer’s expression as we are of his own.The market is relatively small for street pieces as not many have survived, even though they are by far the most important. This stencil is featured in Banksy’s self-published book ‘Cut it Out’. Rats are one of Banksy’s most prolific subjects, and Gangsta Rat is a truly iconic Banksy artwork. The screen print first appeared in 2004 in the red colorway with a limited edition of 350 signed and unsigned pieces, and was re-released in 2005 in an edition of 500. Banksy also created rare colorways of Gangsta Rat (Pink) in an edition of 64 and Gangsta Rat (Green) in an edition of 20 in 2004, and released a special VIP collector set at Dismaland in 2015. Banksy has reproduced Gangsta Rat as graffiti art in the streets and on canvas, and urban art lovers all over the world have imprinted the image on coffee mugs, t-shirts, posters, and their bodies.(Please refer to department for Condition report. The work was produced at the same time as a number of other public works, all of which were located within a short walk of each other, on the border of Chinatown, and in between the neighbourhoods of Knowledge Quarter and Baltic Triangle.SEEArticle in The Sun, ‘Money In The Banksy’ 23 Sep 2017, about stripping of Banksy’s Street Art from the walls in Liverpool (with image of the above painting)(Please refer to department for Condition report.
