Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 1973 - While not a “genuine” Karmann , this 1973 Beetle convertible has been converted very well at some point in its life, probably around the time it is said to be restored in the early 80’s and now while not a concourse example presents very well. The soft top is easy to remove and when in the raised position does not leak, that in itself is very unusual. But let’s face it, with the vinyl interior who cares if you get caught out by our un-predictable weather, you buy a soft top V-Dub to enjoy with the roof down and it looks so much better that way. This particular car, being a 73 has the desirable metal dash and earlier rear lights etc plus the benefit of being in the “Historic” tax class so tax free. After being in storage, being part of a private collection that is being reduced in numbers and on a horrible cold drab day its 1300cc engine fired straight up, no nasty rattles or noises and soon settled into that strange tick over peculiar to VW air cooled engines, blowing smoke rings in the mist. Mechanically the vendor describes the car as being very good and as such he will be placing a new MOT on the car prior to the auction.Body work is very solid with little or no sign of rust, paint is driver quality and will benefit from a good deep polish to bring it back to life. Interior is clean and tidy and described as good. The fabric hood is good with just some cracking to the beading around the edges from being folded. All the electrics function as designed and the general mechanics of the car are described as very good as well. All in all, a cheap way into owning a classic VW Beetle convertible in these days of high values being seen at sales throughout the world, with the added advantage for us of being Right Hand Drive.

Fiat 500D “Transformabile” 1964 - Back in 1960 Fiat launched the Fiat 500D as a replacement for the outgoing model the Nuova 500. While retaining the outgoing models “suicide doors” they decided to replace the full length folding roof with one that only folded halfway, apart from that is on the rare model they called the “Transformable” making this model particularly sought after and very collectable today. Here we have a lovely example. Built in 1964 and restored approximately 10 years ago by an Italian Coachbuilder in Italy who rebuilt the engine, the interior and painted the body. Today the paint work is still very presentable with only minor imperfections. In fact all the original glass is still in place and is clear with only very fine hairline marks. All exterior trim is present, correct and in good condition and complimented by new chrome bumpers. The interior is still in great condition and it even the original over mats are present with only light marks. The engine starts with no hesitation, settles down to a nice even tick over and when on the road pulls cleanly, making the most of the 17hp that its 499cc produces. All the electrics work correctly and the overall mechanics are described as very good and there is a current UK MOT until 21st April 2017.Having watched and seen what other examples have sold for, this car is being offered with a very reasonable reserve and would complement any collection while increasing in value year on year.

Douglas T35 Mark 3 “Sports” 350cc 1948 - With only 842 of these rare “Sports model T35 MK3 Douglas 350’s made during an 18 month production run (1948/49) this very nice example has survived very well. To be in this condition it has to of been restored at some point in its life but has retained a large number of its original components, this is a rare “Numbers Matching” machine.Unfortunately the current owner/vendor knows nothing about the bike as it came to him combined with other vehicles and the V5 log book has been mislaid, this will have to be applied for by the new owner. We can confirm that its registration number is listed with the correct details on the DVLA web site so it will be a simple application and cost £25. It does however have a tax disc dated 2010 so you could surmise that it was in use then, now on Sorn and has been since. It was first registered in September 1948 but DVLA have its year of manufacture as 1947. Its chassis number denotes it as the 377th Mk3 to of been built out of a total run of 2314 including the 842 sports models produced. As the sports model numbers ran in with the non-sports models, there is no way of telling exactly how early in the run it was. As a side note this “Sports” version, with its longer duration cam shafts and better breathing carburettors, was officially the fastest 350cc machine available at the time.As previously said its overall condition is very good and looks to need nothing, we have not tried to start it so an amount of recommissioning will need to be done prior to use. This bike represents a rare opportunity to buy a numbers matching 1948 Douglas motorcycle, especially as nice as this one.Value? Who knows, prices and values of these lesser known British Motorcycle brands are all up massively now, as Norton, Triumph, Vincent etc values explode. So a good investment opportunity for sure.

Ford Escort MK1 4 Door LHD 1100L 1973 - This very pretty rust free 1973 1100L MK1 Escort has recently arrived in the UK from sunnier climes in the south of France, hence being left hand drive.Having been one family owned from new, who used it rarely, the odometer displays a low 53,451 KMs. While the vendor has no official way to support this and draws the conclusion that this could be correct on the strength of that was what he was told and its general condition. We do not state this is a warranted mileage, so have a good look and make your own mind up.The body itself is very good with no signs or damage repair or rust, while under the bonnet where the suspension top plates that are famous for rusting are, same thing, never been replaced and basically as good as you will find. The silver paint still looks fresh and the chrome work is excellent.Interior is also very good apart from a mis-match of the brown on the driver’s seat due to a retrim being off colour and one small split on the dash, apart from the seat cover though all is original .Mechanically the vendor reports that it drives very well, assisted by the fact that although only an 1100cc it has under French law the required brake servo which vastly improves the brakes over a standard 1100’s system. All electrics function correctly and the general mechanics are all good including the tyres on their original rims with original hub caps. While the values of 2 Door cars continue to rise month on month, pricing many people out of the market, 4 door variants are now becoming much more desirable (let’s face it they are more user friendly if more than two people are going to regularly travel in it). Any MK1 Escort is hard to find in this condition and with a small amount of effort this car could be a show winner.Supplied with French papers to allow age related registration if its to be registered here in the UK (advice freely given) or for the proof you need to register if exported out of the UK. Offered here with a very sensible reserve.

Porsche 356 Speedster Legend Replica 1970 - With its stunning Speedster shape from the 50’s is this Legend 356. One of the nicest replica cars we have seen.Finished in Porsche Bright Silver metallic bodywork, a new Mohair hood, period chrome wheels shod with Firestone F560 tyres, period bucket seats in matching grey with red piping and complete with full wet weather side windows.Equipped with a 1600cc Air-cooled engine fitted with twin carbs, this car is fun to drive especially with its very strong and rigid “Legend” chassis, it will encourage you to take the long way home. Roof down, sun out who wants to be screaming along a motorway any way??Having been in storage for the past 5 years the vendor has recently had it recommissioned ready for sale including: New battery, front brake callipers and pads, front bearings and gear linkage bush. The engine was rebuilt with replacement barrels and pistons, new gaskets and seals and a new clutch slave cylinder was fitted. The car comes with an mot and is ready to enjoyIn our opinion, one of the nicest things about this 356 replica is it has its own genuine patina to the body and interior which makes it look and feel authentic. Not to be confused with a lot of the inferior replica’s on offer today.NOTE: With the constant attention the current owner lavishes on this car he has bought it to our attention that he has now fitted genuine and working Porsche 356 Interior door handles since the pictures were taken.

Dayton Albatross 250cc Scooter 1958 - Like a sketch from Monty Pythons the voice on the phone said “ I would like to put my Albatross in your Auction” Ok I said, thinking the obvious that April 1st had come early but no the vendors wife meant an incredibly rare British built scooter from the 50’s a 1958 “Dayton Albatross”. Now after 40 years or so of dealing with motorcycles and scooters this was a new one on us! This particular bike was registered to the supplying dealer 01.04.1958 (see April fool’s day!!) Then sold to a Gent from Chelmsford on the same day. He used it through to 1984 when he laid it up and never used it again. In the history are old MOTs these show mileage when tested in 84 as 37,774, it now has 38540 on the clock, so not many miles had passed after the MOT. Eventually it was sold to the vendor’s husband, also from Chelmsford in 2003, who was determined to get it back on the road and use it. Unfortunately nature struck and this never happened so another 14 years later and it is being offered here. The bike has actually survived miraculously well, it must have been stored correctly for the 33 years it was hidden away. It has that lovely patina all over, nothing nasty just un-molested and original 59 year old metal and paint! The non-standard seat cover is exactly that an elasticated over cover that has been on there for a very long time. We have lifted it and had a look, the original seat cover is there buy damaged on the sides where your legs would rub in use. The 250cc Villiers twin engine is not locked up and rotates easily with the kick start, but obviously will need to be looked at prior to trying to start it. The brakes operate and the bike wheels freely. When we lowered the side engine inspection panels there is evidence of grease on the inside of them, leading us to believe this was done to stop rust. Well it worked as it all looks good in there. The bike is one hundred percent complete and apart from the handle bar brake/clutch levers looks to be original. The original screen complete with vintage AA badge is with it but not fitted as are the original handbooks and even the original bill of sale and warranty certificates!! Plus old tax discs MOTs. This is probably a once in a lifetime chance to own one of these Scooters, especially one with this peerage and what a perfect candidate for either a restoration or keep as is and just get it back on the road. Remember “It is only original once”. We will not be cleaning it just presenting it exactly as it was when we collected it.

HENRY SPENCER MOORE. Pencil drawing on paper, side profile of Mr William Loughlin in WW1 service uniform, signed H.S Moore, 14cm x 9cm.Provenance: Mr William Loughlin reputedly undertook military training with Henry Moore in 1917 where this portrait was drawn by Henry Moore and given to Loughlin as a gift. A letter signed by Mr Loughlin`s daughter (who is also the vendor) recalls that, during the blitz of WW2, when Glasgow was being bombed, her father pointed to the sketch of him by Henry Moore, saying "that the picture would be worth something someday as Henry Moore was starting to make a name for himself". She also states in the letter that he had told her that he had been called up at about the same time as Moore and that they had trained together (A copy of the letter is available for inspection and will be included in the lot). William Loughlin later was awarded an OBE for services to the ministry responsible for shipping. This previously unseen sketch is, of course, not in the Catalogue Raisonne of Moore`s works.

'It was clear to Mr Allen that the man was in a most dangerous mood, and that it would be an almost certain fatal risk for any Police Officer to try and get near him. Allen picked up a walking stick, came up behind the man and struck a blow on his head, causing him to drop both guns, but he turned and with considerable ferocity he stabbed Allen twice in the stomach with the sheath knife. Allen managed to hang on to the man until... Police Officers ran forward and overpowered him.'.

Samuel John Lamorna Birch R.A., R.W.S. (1869-1955), "The Sands of Dee from Caldy, Cheshire", signed, titled on verso, oil on canvas, 50 x 60cm.; 19.75 x 23.75in. * This painting is likely to date from 1916 when Birch was the house guest of Percy Eccles at Caldy Manor in the Wirral. Birch's diary entry for 8 December recalls that he ... 'had a strenuous day ... I think I have done a real masterpiece ... certainly the best thing I've done since I came here. It is a sketch overlooking the Dee, a sunset effect with the channels reflecting the sky and a suggestion of a town in the middle distance. I did make paint fly, and no mistake!' Percy Eccles was a great admirer of Birch's work and it seems probable that he bought the painting from the artist. The subsequent provenance is the London dealership Frost and Reed and an auction at Christie's King Street as their old stencil mark is on the stretcher. Some time thereafter it is understood that the painting formed part of the collection of Lord Sheppard, Bishop of Liverpool and former England cricketer who lived with his wife in West Kirby and whose property enjoyed views not dissimilar to that of the painting's subject. Artists' Resale Right ("droit de suite") may apply to this lot.Condition Report: The painting is in good, cleaned and restored condition.  There is one patch on the back of the canvas together with corresponding overpainting on the front of the canvas.  There are a few minor areas of overpainting visible under UV light.  The stretcher marks are visible around the edge of the canvas as shown in images 3 and 4.  The painting is reframed but not glazed as can be seen.  The frame has the odd knock and dent as can be seen in the images.

George Loraine Stampa (1875-1951), "They're comin' nah 'Orace - Let 'im 'ear yer", signed and dated '37, titled in margin, an original illustration, watercolour, image size 30.5 x 23.5cm.; 12 x 9.25in. * G.L. Stampa was born in Constantinople on 29 November 1875. His father, of Franco-Italian descent, was architect to the Sultan Abdul Hamid, and he was forced into leaving Turkey with his family by the political uprising of 1878. As a result, Stampa grew up at his mother's former family home at Battlebarrow House, Appleby, in Westmoreland. He was educated at the local grammar school and, from the age of 11, at Bedford Modern School. He studied art at Heatherley's (1892-93) and, as a contemporary of Heath Robinson and Lewis Baumer, at the Royal Academy Schools (1893-95). He then shared a studio with Savile Lumley. Contributing to Punch from 1894, he worked in the tradition of Keene and May, and made his name with cartoons and illustrations of urchins. Equally important, if less well chronicled, was his role as illustrator to the Punch theatre column, 'At the Play', which he passed to Ronald Searle only in 1949. A versatile artist, who used a wide variety of media, he exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Academy, and was a member of both the Savage Club and the Langham Sketching Club (being Chairman of the latter in 1914). He died on 26 May 1951.

*English school. Portrait of a young girl, circa 1830, circular oil on canvas, head and shoulders portrait of a young girl wearing a white shift, her short dark curls crowned with a red-ribboned wreath of Morning Glory flowers, and her cheek resting on her hands clasped atop a column, against a ground of blue sky and two fluttering peacock butterflies, sometime relined, diameter 43cm (17ins), stretcher 46 x 46cm (18 x 18ins), stretcher with impressed stamp 'W. Morrill Liner', gilt moulded frame, with remains of label 'Aitken Dott, Carver and Gilder, 26 South Castle Street [Edinburgh]' The sitter, with her pretty elfin face, bears a marked resemblance to Lady Gertrude Fitzpatrick (daughter of John FitzPatrick, 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory), who was the subject of Sir Joshua Reynolds's 1779 painting entitled 'Collina', held by Columbus Museum of Art. The present work however is more likely to be a fancy picture than a conventional portrait. The column and butterflies suggest the Greek goddess Psyche, although the girl may also represent a month or season, or simply be a fairy figure. The picture restorerr William Morrill (1838-1910) took over his father's business in 1866, working extensively for the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Collections and other prominent collectors. Dante Gabriel Rossetti described him as 'skilfull and careful' and Burne-Jones and Whistler also employed him. The leading Edinburgh firm of Aitken Dott was founded in 1842. It exhibiited and sold work by the leading Scottish artists of the day, as well as carrying out carving, gilding and framing work. The business traded from 26 South Castle Street from 1874 until 1982, and is still in existence today as fine art dealers in Dundas Street, The Scottish Gallery. (1)

*English naive school. Schooner Countess of Morley, William Sherriff Master, entering Leghorn Mole December 19th 1849 & Schooner Countess of Morley, William Sherriff Master, 1849, oil on canvas, a pair, with painted titles below image, re-lined, 63.5 x 76 cm (25 x 30 inches), uniform gilt gesso frames The schooner Countess of Morley started life as H.M.S.Kangeroo in 1805 and was much involved in the supression of the slave trade in West Africa and the Caribbean. She was sold out from the Royal Navy in 1815. Repaired and re-named The Countess of Morley, she was first owned by Rowe & Co. of Plymouth where no doubt she would have been registered. She was fitted out as a whaler between December 1815 and May 1816, and her hull was sheathed and coppered. When surveyed she was classified as A1 by Lloyds on the 1st or 2nd May 1816. Under the command of Captain H.Best she sailed from Plymouth on 4 May 1816 for the South Seas. She did much of her whaling off the coast of Peru and around the Galapagos Islands. After she returned to Plymouth in August 1825 she was sold to a person named Billing, who wasted no time in getting the ship back to sea as a general cargo vessel, as after a few weeks in port she sailed for St John, New Brunswick, Canada, arriving on 7 November. She returned to Plymouth on 19 January 1826, most probably loaded with timber. In March 1826 she sailed again from Plymouth for Buenos Aires and in May 1827 she sailed from Plymouth for Quebec. The last notice on the Countess of Morley is given in Lloyds Register of 22nd April 1828 which reads, 'The Countess of Morley proving leaky at Sierra Leone, has been obliged to discharge'. Most probably the repair cost was too high and she was abandoned. The date of 1849 on these two paintings would probably indicate a case of retrospective portrayal as we cannot find a record of another Countess of Morley existing at this date. Possibly commissioned by a descendant of the master, this fine pair of paintings present a romantic ideal of this armed schooner in her earlier splendour. (2)
