Antonovich, Les Métamorphoses Divines d'Alexandre, Paris, 1996, p. 82.Alexander was a famously skilled horseman. Philonicus the Thessalian offered Bucephalus to Philip for 13 talents, a hefty price. Philip thought the horse unbreakable, but Alexander bet he could tame the horse and, if he could not, offered to pay the cost himself. Alexander of course won the bet, subduing the anxious horse by speaking soothingly, and turning him towards the sun so he could no longer be distressed by his own shadow. Two Roman lead curse tablets Circa 150-300 A.D.In their original rolled state, 7.6cm and 7cm long, 0.15-0.3cm thick; weight 94.5g and 155.1gFootnotes:Provenance:Dr James Bynon (1926-2017) collection, acquired prior to 2000.Curse tablets, like the above, were common throughout the Roman Empire, though the UK has the highest number of known examples in Latin. The tablets were usually made of thin hammered lead or pewter in the hopes of passing the cold and heavy attributes of the meal onto the cursed. Inscriptions followed a common formula, invoking a god to bring harm to someone who had wronged the author, and might also include magical symbols to increase the potency of their curse. Before being left in ritualistically important locations like springs and temples, the curse would be either folded or rolled to disorientate the cursed individual. Unlike literature and monument commemorations, Roman curse tablets were written by all classes of people from slaves to high ranking officials. Tablets are often smaller than the present examples. For a larger example, see Portable Antiquities Scheme database, I.D. no. NLM-EA50C0.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Hermes Scarf 'Jue des Omnibus Ei Dames Blanch'. Hermès "Jeu des Omnibus et des Dames Blanches" silk twill scarf designed by Hugo Grygkar in an orange colorway. This design first issued in 1937, is the first scarf Hermès has ever created. This particular scarf was re-released in 2007 for its 70th annniversary. The inspiration for it comes from a popular board game of that period from the personal antique collection of Émile-Maurice Hermès. Surrounding the central game motif are "omnibus" or horse-drawn bus carriages that became a central figure of Parisian transportation in the 1800s. The Hermès scarf has a rich heritage. Hermès scarves have been embraced by some of history’s most beautiful fashion icons including Jacqueline Kennedy, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly (who wore a scarf as a sling when she broke her arm), Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn and Queen Elizabeth. Today’s fans include Rihanna, Ashley Olsen, Blake Lively, Miranda Kerr, Kate Hudson and Kim Kardashian. Hermes scarves are probably the most collected of Hermes’ products. With an almost 80-year history of production, these gorgeous silks are cherished and handed down generation after generation.
